I think seiko is starting to listen to the enthousiasts again. this watch is a hit in my opinion. the 5kx was badly received only because we saw it as the heir to the skx, but I think it's actually a pretty good watch overall. thank you for the video, awesome as usual

I've been looking for a field watch for some time now, in microbrands and big brands, and unfortunately, nothing has really REALLY caught my attention. Many nice-looking ones, but nothing that I felt really hit the nail on the head. Always some little detail I didn't like or care for and made me doubt if I'd like it or not (I know myself well enough NOT to buy something when I get those doubts).
This model, in this colorway, has finally done it!
Perfect size, perfect colors, textured dial, curved glass, applied arabics.. I could go on, but maybe the feature I really like the most about THIS particular model is the blacked out seconds hand (up until the arrowhead), that really helps to clean up the dial. And the way they blacked out part of the hours hand to make it "float".
I don't know, but this is THE field watch I've been waiting for and it's "cheap" too!

I came across this watch while browsing ebay last week. I liked it so much I ordered two! For $230 a piece. The green dial & black dial on bracelet. It’s not perfect but it has almost everything I want in a field watch. It’s simple yet I think it looks very nice. I especially love the case size of 39mm!

I agree, on a dive watch. Hardlex is significantly more scratch and shatter resistant than a generic mineral crystal. For underwater use, one could argue that it is superior to sapphire.
But, the reflectivity of this crystal on this field watch, where so much effort has been put into making a watch that will not flash; is, IMO, a sin. A field watch must not flash. The flash is what a sniper targets.

    • @marduj2768

I am not a soldier so I don't mind hardlex.

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@marduj2768 If you were a soldier, you would probably prefer hardlex to sapphire. Sapphire is very hard and consequently relatively brittle. If struck, sapphire can shatter. Hardlex is far less likely to shatter or crack than sapphire is.
Yes, you can scratch a hardlex crystal, but that won't stop you from completing your mission. A scratch will not compromise the WR or functioning of a watch in the field.
A cracked sapphire crystal very well may cause your watch to fail in the field.
Sapphire is better suited to office use or light duty. Hardlex is better suited to use in rough service environments.
All of the Seiko watches worn by US servicemen in Vietnam had hardlex crystals. Hardlex is fit for this purpose.

I’m thinking the same thing. I just ordered it from Jomashop for $170. I like the idea that if/when the crystal gets scratched I can swap it out for a sapphire for $40. Also if there’s ever an issue with the movement I can swap it out for an NH36.

    39mm across is good.

I'm still in love with my SNK805, so I'll be waiting a few years before looking into one of these, but honestly I like it. It does need to be cheaper though, and I do prefer an offset, guarded crown on a field watch, but I do like the looks of this one.

I have an SNK809 and love it. Funny enough, my friend got me into Seiko selling me his SKX which failed almost immediately after I bought it off him. I had it fixed but I’m just not a fan. But the smaller SNK is great. It doesn’t get in the way, and it’s still a “5” so it’s got all the criteria for a good Seiko watch. I recently replaced the movement which died just like the one in the SKX, and fitted an NH36. Works brilliantly again. And with all my scratches on the crystal, they haven’t bothered me enough to warrant the expense of a sapphire crystal and gasket if it requires one.

Great review. I'm a huge Seiko fan. One of my Seiko's is a new 5 Sports SRPD51K2, and it's a very attractive watch, beautiful dial and incredibly good lume. But I wanted to try a field watch, and would have got this had I known sooner. But I got an AE Addies Field style watch, brushed stainless steel, with an NH35A movement, +5 spd, a sapphire crystal, signed crown, engraved back, nice green NATO, and 200m water resistance with screw down crown. The bonus is all night lume too, wearing it as I write this! Now, I don't feel the need to buy another field watch and at $70 for Addies rather than $270 for the Seiko, I think for anyone who isn't a brand slave, I'd definitely go for something else. My Addies, is as good in terms of quality and with sapphire crystal, better build quality too. It's still a beautiful watch, but the competition is stiff particularly when one can get better spec's with the Seiko engine inside.

Hard to get excited about it when we used to get watches from Seiko like the SARG007 for $350. Not only that but Mark over at Long Island Watch put out his own field watch with better specs for under $200, and that proves Seiko is getting a little too lofty with their prices.

This watch doesn't fit in my collection if I was new to watches. I will pick this up. Seiko Hardlex haven't been a problem for me. I have my Samurai for years and don't see a scratch at all. Really enjoyed this review. I struggled to find a field watch with 100 metre of water resistance at a price where I would be comfortable beating it around. I considered quartz but when the second doesn't hit the markers, I just can't do it. I do a lot of DIY, swim in the sea regularly enough and have a couple watches I am petrified in scratching. It is a bit more than what I want to spend on a beater and will want to pick it up on sale.

My personal preference for a field watch id the Citizen BM8180-03E (Eco-Drive). I hated the stiff canvas strap it came on, so put it on a Milanese mesh band. It has 100M water resistance and mineral crystal, which are comparable to this Seiko, but can usually be had for about half the price. I've recently started buying automatic watches, so I see their appeal, but I'm also a big fan of Citizen Eco Drives and I think the Citizen would be more reliable and durable in a field setting. It was also my daily office-wear watch for about 3 years.

I purchased one of these made in Malaysia Seiko 5 Automatics with the fabric band online about three years ago. I was looking for an automatic watch that was in my budget. The band broke, and I bought a Seiko stainless steel band for it.
About a month after I bought the band, my Seiko Automatic stopped working. Looking for reviews on this watch, I read that the Seiko Automatic will keep working if it's dirty and needs to be serviced. But once it stops working, it is dead. I also found that Seiko Automatics should be serviced about every two years.
Several watch repair quoted a starting price of about $100.00 for service. Since I paid about that much for this watch, I decided to purchase another Seiko Automatics, this time one that was made in Japan for about $170.00. I decided to purchase another Seiko 5 Automatic because I had bought a Seiko stainless steel band.
I purchased the Seiko 5 Automatic because it is an affordable practical watch with an easy to read numbered dial and day/date functions.
