    Great reviews. I’m ex armed forces and had an issue G10 and grey NATO strap which I returned to stores when I left in the 80s.
    I missed it and spotted a civvy copy about 30 years ago from the ‘Jack & Jones’ brand (Rene Radlev,World of Watches, Copenhagen, Denmark) for about £20. Probably a Japanese movement, very accurate and it keeps going, all I do is unscrew the back and change the battery, and it’s never been serviced.It’s travelled Europe, India and SE Asia with me when I went backpacking with a Lonely Planet guide. I got a bad scratch on the glass, so I got that replaced for pence by a Malaysian jeweller in Kuala Lumpur. It’s still going strong, but the luminous markers and hands is barely visible now in the dark after an hour, so about 4 years ago I got the Lorus field watch you mention as it had the entire luminescent face, plus day/date (date is a necessity and day a bonus for me). Straps a bit cheap, but there again at the price point, no problem. I use a stainless steel or a NATO G10 strap with it. Again, very accurate and I reckon it will last as well as my other field watch has.
    There’s also one budget brand that does field watches, Sekonda. Worth a mention.👍

    12:27 I've had a Citizen BM8180 for years now and its a fantastic watch. I work on cars as a hobby and its gotten super beat up over the years and its been smothered in oil, swimming, and everything in-between. My only complaint is that Citizen has some weird crystal sizes. But do your research, and you can snag a sapphire for it and never worry about scratches again.

    I have the Vaer watches - both the white and blue dial ones you included in this video. I love them. For someone with a thin wrist that wants durable, these field watches are the way to go. 316L, 100m WR, domed sapphire with AR on the inside = water friendly, very anti-scratch. In the summer, I put the white dial on the navy silicon strap for going to the pool/beach and put the blue on the steel bracelet as the slightly dressier watch that you can take camping and to a nice restaurant.

    • @johnsanders7599
      @johnsanders7599 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am seriously thinking about getting a Vaer. I like that they are constructed in the US. Do you think it would hold up well to swimming in a pool or ocean?

    • @briankelley987
      @briankelley987 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnsanders7599 I have taken my Vaer C3's to the pool and they are fine (just remember to have the crown screwed in). 100 meter water resistance should be good for the pool and beach, but definitely not any proper diving. The case is 316L steel, so it's good against salt, though I would always clean the watch off with clean water after going to the beach.

  • @nspr9721
    @nspr9721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great review mate. Gotta tell you from extensive experience, that the Lorus/Seiko totally trumps it in my view. Both back at school, in the Army and now as a contractor I've used them and even bought a few to give to colleagues or people we've been training. Very affordable, sometimes as little as 20 quid in the sales, very tough and robust, with battery changes my Lorus watches have lasted 10 to 16 years - I don't know of a Timex lasting for more than around 5. The lumibrite feature overall is a big plus and useful for most jobs including night guard, construction and outdoors. Looks aesthetically good on almost any wrist, a good strap monster and quality Japanese quartz build. The Marathon is very overpriced for what it is and Timexes - though a decent option - have gone way up in price and again seem to have a shelf life of 5 to 6 years, plus the plated brass case scratches fairly quickly under intense use. They don't pay me to plug them but any Lorus basic field beater, especially the Lumibrite G10 homage, is an excellent option proved across Iraq and the Middle East

  • @MikeRenzulli
    @MikeRenzulli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know you may not like the Seiko SRPG's, but they are very good for what you get, including hacking and hand winding. Something the SNZG and SNK models didn't have and they are both discontinued. Also, the Orient Defender is good too and comes in under $200 depending on the version you get. The black and blue dial defenders tend to be the ones competitively priced.

    i bought a citizen eco-drive that I used on deployment as I didn't want to worry about batteries. Put on a NATO strap which is dangerous I found out after jumping off a truck and snagging it. Luckily it just ripped the watch off but could have broke my wrist or even de-gloved. Now I use a french elastic nato band. The watch held up great though, and while the glow didn't last incredibly long it was fine on night-time missions. It did get really scratched up but that's just a given.

    One watch I think might also fit on this list is the Switch Watch Company's ARK. SWC seems to be pretty nice micro brand. Their ARK has Titanium case, domed sapphire crystal, a Ronda movement and they appear to have slapped a ton of lume on the dial and hands. I chose the Timex expedition Metal Field over the Camper or the weekender for a cheap, small every day piece. The chromed brass case muffles a lot of the loud ticking (not that i have a problem with that) and gives the watch a more substantial feel, i also prefer the flat mineral crystal over the more scratch prone acrylic, the extra $10 over the Camper is more than worth it.

    Own several of the listed, just got the Lumibrite......its a stageshow when the lights go out, would recommend on that alone.
    Cracking watch for the money and TBH it is just a fun enjoyable thing.

    IMO, Time Factors (Smiths Watch Company) belongs on this list. They are a UK based veteran owned firm which makes military inspired watches in batches, which are sold on a schedule, and usually sell out. They are priced in the same ballpark as Hamilton. They seem to me to compete directly with CWC.

    Thank you for this video! Now I have a Baltany S watch, and after changing the stock strap for a dark brown leather one, the watch really shines and feels much more high-end than the price tag suggests!

    Currently own the VAER A3 Tradition (aka the Automatic version of the Vaer watch featured). It's a fantastic watch for a small wrist and I love that it uses the Miyota 9039, but will definitely set you back near 500 USD, unless you snag a discount.

    Re: Citizen BM8180. This may be the perfect grab and go watch, other than the square g-shock (arguably a modern field watch). I hated the stock strap which is stiff, cheap, and uncomfortable. I highly recommend a Haveston single pass canvas strap on this watch. They have several 18mm offerings. Canvas keepers would be best. In hot weather the canvas Haveston strap is insanely comfortable, and it looks the part of a WW2 era US Military or MOD offering.

    The Marathon models are excellent and I would recommend the make from experience, the price being the only downside!
    Marathon's nylon NATO strap is not in the same class as the watch but better ones are available on the market. BluShark straps, for example, are a very good match.

    I was very impressed by in esp. the Timex! The tinny Chinese woman's watch movement. Just wow! It's even skelettonised. And the beautifully stamped "engraving"... That's high horology!

    Ben, I love this video and I'm thankful for being able to watch it! I do have a legit important question - in the Timex part you have the watch lying on an old pair of binoculars. I have a similar looking pair that I inherited from my Dziadziu from his life during WW2. Do you have any information on those binoculars? Thank you so much and keep up the great work on your channel!

    A pre-requisite for me is the one piece/no pins needed band secure.
    My Bertucci would have never survived if it had pins holding the band on.

    Recently picked up the Sieko SRPH in black and orange, absolutely love it. Think the slight size increase works in its favour, the orange on matt black makes it very legible and striking to look at.
