Thank you for not only showing us the trains themselves, but also how to use the ticket machines! That's especially helpful for someone who's new to the process! The Green Car is indeed pricey, and I could see it not being worth it for someone who lives there or is there all the time. But I think I would be willing to try it once just for the experience! 😀
Thanks for another fun video, Solo-san! Have fun and safe travels! :)

Sadly not that very quiet in practice all the time. My buddy and i travelled from Tokyo to Osaka in green car last year. We've had a family with 4 unruly, loud kids just 2 rows behind us.
On the way back ? Some businessmen loudly talking and getting drunk, also in the green car.

I did not know that ice cream could be used as a percussion instrument. 😆 So cute. lol You make these trips fun without having to actually say a word out loud. I have never had the ability to ever ride on a train before and would very much like to try it some day. The last time I was on a plane was back in 1987. And have not been on a boat since...um...hard to remember...I think it was back in 1985 in the summer sometime. When you make these videos, you are alone, yet you take all of us with you. I just came back from a trip to Japan. I rode in Green Car from Yokohama to Hiroshima. Was definitely worth it for a long ride, about 3.5 hours. I took ordinary car from Hiroshima to Kyoto and Kyoto to Yokohama. Ordinary car seat is not that comfortable for a long trip. It's fine for 2 hours or less. 2h 27min for 552km? That's an average speed of 225km/h. That's awesome!
In Germany you would need about 10 hours for the same distance because trains are delayed/cancelled/not working/construction works or just because of weather...
And even if everything works as planned you need 5+ hours for that distance...

12:31 The mobile ordering service for Green Car passengers is a replacement for the trolley service that used to be available in all cars. That was sadly discontinued last year due to staff shortages and people now typically making their purchases before boarding. This does mean you have to be in Green Car seating to try the infamously hard ice cream...

How thoughtful to design the shoes-on side with the same design as the floor and the shoes-off side with the same design as the upholstery. Even if you have no command of the Japanese language whatsoever, the intention is intuitively understandable. That kind of attention to detail is what the western world is sadly lacking almost entirely.

The seats look worth it, bigger and a 2-2 configuration instead of 3-3 across. Having no one beside you can be peaceful. LOL I guess they dont want you to eat the ice cream on the train. You have to buy it 30 minutes ahead of eating. Thanks for sharing your trip!

Yeah, I've had several times now both the green car JR pass and the regular one; and honestly, the regular seats are more than enough with good legspace (i'm 1.78M)
As you say, beats Economy on a flight. And mostsly i'm on a shinkansen for no longer than 2hrs 20 mins at any given time. Totally fine. Especially with the 70% pricehike of the JR pass since late 2023, the green car isn't worth getting. Save your money and use that to buy yourself a ton of delicious food at your destinations.

Went to Japan on July 2024.
I bought the 7-day Japan Rail Pass (Green) for my Japan trip as my itinerary was very fluid and I had to make multiple last minute changes.
Good thing about Green car is that the cabin is not always full except for peak hours. I was able to get a window seat all the time even for last minute booking (about 15 mins before departure). Seat is slightly wider than the normal cabin but I like the seat configuration of 2-2. Another Good thing about green car is they always stop near escalator and lift landing areas at the stations so as to avoid the other commuters rushing to go down the escalator. Was able to catch a glimpse of Mt Fuji during my commute to and from Tokyo.
I made full use of my JR green pass by always getting the green car even though my ride between Osaka and Kyoto was just a mere 10-15 minutes. Cabin was much quieter and was given a wet towel for all rides, even for the short ones between Osaka and Kyoto.
If you prefer comfort over anything else, adding that 20-40k yen to get the JR green pass is much more worth it. I paid around 70k yen for a 7-day JR green pass but my cost for the whole pass usage was over 100k yen including the normal JR trains.

We did this years ago. Given that the seat pitch is much greater than you get on a plane, and given that it is only a couple of hours - we sort of didn't bother with any upgrades. Mind you, we might not have been aware that there were different classes at the time. Wasn't watching this then.😁

I've had plenty of experience with both the Green Car and regular cars on the Shinkansen. Personally, I find standard class more than sufficient- the footrest actually gets in the way of stretching your legs properly and starts to get annoying (i'm 174M) . Now that the JR Pass includes the Nozomi with the late 2023 price hike, making Tokyo to Osaka trip is just 2 hours and 15 minutes, which is perfectly comfortable in standard. Green class tends to be less crowded, but it's not always more quiet due to variables (families with small children, loud drunk businessmen on the evening trains) but that's really the only major difference.

Green car definitely worth the upgrade as it looks way more comfy for travelling. Service is A1 also. Bushyboy Oz.

I've ridden green car as often as standard, and honestly standard is just the way to go for the price. It's not that much more comfier in green to be honest. The footrest is actually annoying and blocks a bit of total legspace and I'm not even that tall (1.74M) - as far as "service" goes. Just buy ekiben/beer/snacks at the station and you're fine :)

For the short trips - I wouldnt bother. Had the JR Pass recently too. But longer trips, its such a small difference for the Green or Gran Class - well worth it if you like or need the larger seats.

The ticket price for green car looks about right. It is a more luxurious roomy train. Less seats per car than the 3-2 cars means a higher ticket price, then there are the amenities. For a 2 hour trip price seemed pretty decent.

My ex wife lied to me! She said only business people were allowed in the Green Car. Older, and a little bit wiser now I wonder how would they even know who is and who isn't a business person? I should have questioned it, but I was in a foreign country and I didn't want to rock the boat. I'll stick with the ordinary class ticket. They worked fine last time between Tokyo and Kyoto. But maybe a reserved seat is best if boarding at Kyoto. I didn't have to pay for the tickets, so I don't know if they were reserved or unreserved. Father in law just said 'Follow me', and when we were seated, he handed me a beer and an ekiben. 2007 was a great year!

Always take reserved seat at the counter to ask for a E seat (window), plenty of leg room (double as an economy plane seat), no need the fenzy stuff of the green car for only 2h

I used the Green Car from Tokyo to Kyoto on a Nozomi Shinkansen. This was 280 miles and did it in 2 hours. Its great and very quiet, most of the people were asleep. Its worth it!

Green car is worth the upgrade for sure! That mobile ordering service could be dangerous to my diet though.

If I was not a regular traveler, I would definitely upgrade to the green car, worth the extra yen. But I have to buy all my food and drink in advance, because I never travel with my mobile phone.

The Shinkansen ice cream, frozen to absolute zero, always makes me laugh. I’ve noticed that Japanese air carriers do the same. You have to wait like 10-15 minutes for it to warm enough before you can even try to eat it.

It’s absolutely worth the extra cost, in my opinion.
