Hello Paul and Anthony. Nice intro. Boris looked amazing Paul. You have a great talent. My goodness all that weed around the locks! I would have thought the Wigan flight of locks would be a really busy part of the canal and well-maintained. Yikes all those Spiders. Don't like Spiders. Nature is wonderful at times in a strange sort of way. The poor pigeon that had fallen into the canal, when it saw a recuse pole reach out, it immediately swam to it and climbed onto it. I never knew pigeons were that clever. Glad he was saved. 12 hours of cruising (from when you started to your final destination) you both must have been worn out. Another excellent Vlog. Thank you. The weed was horrific. It was almost unnavigable. The flight is busy but definitely not well maintained. It needs a lot of money and TLC.
I don’t mind spiders but not in that quantity. 😂. Nature is incredible.
The poor pigeon. We were glad we could rescue it. Bless. I do hope it survived.
We were exhausted after that day. It is so labour intensive.

Hey guys. It breaks my heart to see the problems you are having with the canals, and I don't even live in the UK! lol. I hope the government comes to the realization that the canals are a national treasure and should be better maintained and preserved for future generations...(and for any old(er) non- citizens who have the crazy dream of becoming a continuous cruiser😁). Hello Gentlemen, you really manage to capture the 'community' aspect of boating. I could 'rant' for a while, about society, but that would not be helpful, so I won't. I think that I am beginning to 'get it', whatever 'it' is. This is the way, indeed. Currently, I am on my boat, I'm utterly content and wondering why I wasn't before. The answer, community ity. Fantastic to meet you guys, we had a proper good laugh at the bottom of the flight that day. Great that you mention the state of the flight and the disgraceful treatment of Peter Baxter (lock keeper of the year) just a few years back and a very good friend and mentor to myself and many others. Love this volg as the flight is very close to my heart and Im there most days, sometimes helping, sometime just having a butty and brew on my favorite lock gate (71), its a really nice place to be..Best of luck on your travels and on the new boat. I wonder if CRT are making a political statement - making the new govt aware that without volunteers the canals struggle to operate, funding needs to increase! I certainly agree with that 😮

Glad you enjoyed. It certainly was hard work. I am not sure what the CRT is doing. It is sad that funding has been cut but they were aware that this was the date it would happen. They were meant to find alternative funding routes. It is sad that the volunteers aren’t cherished more.

Another good and informative episode, sad to see state of overall decline of canals in general for us boat users. On the positive side we do have LOTS of shiny new CRT signs 🙄

I have to admit I was a bit irritated by your idea of getting another new narrowboat after you were so chuffed about your Oakums boat until quite recently. But now I realized what caused the disconnect. For us landlubbers the prospect of a life on a boat is mostly a dream of adventure and the expression of a sense of longing. We don´t have to deal with the moans and niggles everyday. So I hope you find the right boat format for your needs and also work out a good intermediate solution.

We were amazed when we got Morning Star but the fact we have had to sort the issues out ourselves has left a bitter taste.

Hi! I’ve been following Wes and Amy boat time for a while and the other day (im now addicted to narrow boat living.. something I wanted to do when I was younger) I came across narrow escapes and I saw you get your beautiful electric boat. You’ve just popped up on my TH-cam suggestions.
Sorry to hear you lost Dexter…you’ve done amazing raising money for the dogs trust ..I believe was it?..we had a dogs trust rescue, sadly lost him January this year.

Oh wow. What a lot a weed. The Chesterfield Canal was just like they in places and we had to to remove loads of it at a lock to be able to get in, only to be told off by a woman who lived in the lock cottage saying we’d blocked her lawn mower and bin access and we needed to put it all in the other side of the lock. Thankfully CRT volunteers were there and said they’d move it.
It’s great buddying up with someone through a flight like that. Anthony, you did look tired and cold by the end of the day though. See you tomorrow xx
It was horrific. Not sure what they expect you to do with the weed, it is ridiculous. It did make the day better by buddying up. I was exhausted at the end of that day. Great catch up this weekend ❤️

Everything's going to hell in a handbasket, and obviously CRT is no exception. I grew up on that canal and it's disgusting to see what's going on now. The one lock with the spiders, them things looked like a spider we have here in America called the brown recluse which is only small but poisonous. They were mainly in Southern States but now spreading north and we have them in Pennsylvania. The poison will literally rot your skin then spread. I had a friend that needed skin graft after an experience with one of them buggers. Well, the country's biggest RV show is going on in Hershey this week and I'm off to it. Have a good weekend guys. I'm sure you'll have a good watering hole in Parbold Village.

The weed was horrific Cliff. They definitely know about it. It was almost unnavigable. It was definitely easier buddying up. They were great company. Happy Friday! 😊 I just checked and the fund is at 5,510 pounds. People did good and helped lots of dogs. 🥰 What a long, hard day even with taking a good long break. I have never seen anything like all that weed in the locks. I know the CRT is underfunded but that is something that really needs to be dealt with. Loved the drawing of Boris. He has soulful eyes. 🐕 I'm trying to deal with first time hearing aids. I have a lot of adjusting to do and tech to be learned. I had to reduce PC sound from 100% to 65% and I discovered that I have the noisiest keyboard in the world. I didn't think I needed them, but maybe I really did... 😊 It seems to be going pretty well, I think. ❤ Take care and have a great weekend. ❤

just FYI there are 23 locks on the Wigan flight (I am a Wiganer)! Great video by the way as always.
Glad you enjoyed. There are 21 locks in the flight itself. The other locks, although at the bottom of Wigan, aren’t actually part of the flight. Paul is a Wiganer too 😂 .

Needless to say, that flight needs some loving from the CRT! I realize nothing is perfect but at least the bare minimum of needs for a proper flight experience should be taken seriously ie. weed removal, non-leaky gates and paddles and deep enough water to float your boat. Doesn't seem like to much to ask for to me.
Otherwise, that looks like a beautiful place to cruise and I remember it from past videos. After that was all said and done I hope you two had a great meal and a much needed sleep!

Good morning from Melbourne Australia. What a big day out for both of you. Another long canal cruising day with plenty of lock action that allows me to gongoozle from afar. Thank you!!!! It is a little sad that this marks the end (for now) of Spot-the-Saul...almost devestating! LOL. But, as is so obvious, you meet new people and make friends so easily along the way. There will only ever be one Spot-the-Saul, though. The narrowboat/widebeam community seems so open, welcoming, collaborative and supportive. Hubby and I are so enjoying cruising the UK Canal system with yourselves on your lovely narrowboat (good luck with the sale...cue a small tear).
The scenery, for the most part, is gorgeous, although there are parts of the system that are showing those signs of weed overgrowth and leaky locks. It is a shame what has happened between the Wigan Flight Crew and the CRT. Volunteers seem to be such an integral part of helping in maintaining the system and helping boaters with the locks...the safer and the more navigable the system, the more likley boaters are to traverse those canals and help reduce/minimise weed growth just through boating those waterways. Having boaters presence on all parts of the canal sytem (and certainly those arms/canals less navigated ) surely fosters a sense of increased safety on the towpaths for the locals who are then more likely to also utilise the paths for exercise.....and that surely brings local communities together and breathes life into some underused canal arms, towpaths and villages. All the while the historic canals are being restored, maintained, preserved, utilised and also slowly reclaimed and added to the network for benefit of so many.

It is a shame that some of the network has been severely neglected. That weed was horrific. The volunteers on that flight were incredible and such a loss.
There definitely is a sense of safety in numbers.

Our most terrifying canal experience was on the Wigan flight where a leaking paddle almost filled our engine bay. The flight needs a lot of TLC. We didn’t have volunteers assisting us at that time but you can see where their knowledge of their flight would save a lot of boaters from having bad experiences.

It was terrible Julia. The weed made it almost unnavigable. 😂. Waterproofs are always difficult to get off and require a special dance. It was great weather but the flight was exhausting. Hope you have a lovely week ❤️

Well, that was a lot of work! All those weeds - why isn't this particular canal looked after as well as the others you've passed through? And why piss off the volunteers? The world runs on volunteers and also gives a lot of folks something to do and to be involved with others, gives them purpose. I hope you remember to check the weed catcher thingie we've seen you clean out, so you don't have to buy a new filter. Hope the take out was amazing because you both certainly worked for it today! Seems like the past few vlogs have contained some type of weed but todays was ridiculous. Good job for buddying up to share the load, for moral support, and to battle the weeds with, and an added bonus of an enjoyable day. Although 12 hours is a long day but productive and many clories burnt. And yes the nights are definately drawing in. Happy cruising, and resting xxx
