2007 Chevy HHR LS 5 Speed Shifter Repair

was wasting too much time attempting to locate an entire shift control assembly, so I found a repair kit instead.
There were ZERO help or videos of this process/problem online, so here you go.
Note that you do not have to remove the entire assembly to do this job like I did. Removing it and doing it on a table is a lot easier; plus I wanted to clean more thoroughly both the inside of the console and the shift controls themselves.

Was it hard to shift before repair.

Yes it was hard to shift because the stick was so loose that it wouldn't engage the shift cables properly.

What would cause this assembly to have to be manhandled while driving to get into correct gear. The transmission is fine it’s this shifter that I’m fighting with. What would cause it to not be aligned with the correct gear? Like sometimes it wants to be in third but I’m in the first position, to get into first I have to hit second hard and then put it into first.

I don't unfortunately. It's a fairly simple job though. Car needs to be on ramps or jacked up so you can get under the vehicle, and you just follow the cables from the transmission to where they go into the cab.

But how do you disconnect the cable on transmission? Need to disconnect the fuse black box? Thanks you

Your shift knob & boot look terrible. Are you going to replace them? My boot is good, but knob chrome is beginning to flake. I want to put a Speed Dawgs Hurst knob on, but I think much of the shaft will be exposed.

It's not my vehicle, but I would have replaced them if they were mine. I don't know about the Hurst knob or aftermarket shafts and knobs, I tend to stay with factory.
