Freddie's life wasn't a pleasure cruise, he had his own demons, but lived his life to the fullest. This is one of the most mysterious songs ever.

Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and pianist
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
    John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen is an unusual rock band. All four members had amazing musical talent and each of the four members was a successful composer. Queen is the only group in which all members of the band have songs inducted into the Music Hall of Fame. Queen has released 15 studio albums, 10 live albums, 16 compilation albums, two soundtrack albums, 2 extended plays, 73 singles, and seven promotional singles.
Each member of Queen was a strong and unique individual. They each had different musical tastes, which is probably why Queen's music catalog contains various genres. They wrote and recorded songs that are soft rock, hard rock, progressive rock, arena rock, thrash rock, glam rock, rockabilly, r&b, blues, pop, soul, funk, disco, dance music, jazz, gospel, folk, opera, show tunes, ragtime, etc. They would sometimes combine multiple genres in a single song.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" released originally in 1975 is the creation of Freddie Mercury but he never told anyone what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics. Freddie often wrote in metaphors so I would not suggest trying to take these lyrics literally. He wanted listeners to be able to apply to the song whatever meaning it had to them personally. Not what it meant to him.
BTW - Freddie did admit that it was composed of three separate songs that he had been working on but could not seem to finish. So he decided to mash them together, adding some transitions and bridges, and created "Bohemian Rhapsody”.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" can be broken down into 6 parts:
Part I is the "Into". The video image shows the four members of Queen singing and harmonizing the lyrics of the "Intro" in acapella. In reality, it is only Freddie's voice you hear on the recording. Freddie laid down 5 separate tracks of himself singing and harmonizing with himself. (FYI - multi-tracking and overdubbing run rampant in Bohemian Rhapsody.)
Next is the "Ballad" portion of the song ('Mama, just killed a man'). Freddie had worked on this song for years but it never had a name. The other members of Queen tentatively titled it "Freddie's Cowboy Song". The lyrist Tim Rice (he wrote the lyrics for "Jesus Christ, Superstar", "Evita", "Alladin", "The Lion King", ...) who was a close friend of Freddie's believes this portion of the song’s lyrics were about Freddie confessing to his fans that he was gay (a radical and scary thing to do in 1975).
The third section is the guitar solo. This is the only part of Bohemian Rhapsody not written by Freddie. Freddie told Brian that he wanted a guitar solo in the song and where he wanted it to fit into the song but left it to Brian to create. Brian wanted to have his guitar effectively sing a verse that would inject a different melody. He heard something in his head. He said that he could hear this melody and had no idea where it came from. That melody isn’t anywhere else in the song, but it’s on a familiar chord sequence, so it dovetails in quite nicely. The guitar solo leads to the fourth section the "Operatic" section.
Freddie not only loved Rock but he loved Opera. He was always fascinated with the idea of combining rock and opera. It took 3 weeks to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Operatic" section was much smaller when they began recording but Freddie kept adding to it.
Various lyrics in the "Operatic" section seem to refer to the band:
Freddie appears to cast himself as the character, Scaramouche, a stock clown of 16th-century Italian literature who dances around making a fool of himself but speaks the truth.
Galileo who was an Italian astrometer, physicist, and engineer definitely refers to Brian (Queen's lead guitarist) who in real life is Dr. Brian May, a scholar with a Ph.D. in Astrophysics.
Figaro refers to the Mozart opera, "The Marriage of Figaro" and it is a subtle way to reference Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) who has a four-octave range vocal span (E2-E6) and was even frequently cited as hitting E5 in live performances while playing the drums. Freddie compared Roger's voice to a dog whistle.
The final reference of Magnifico is Queen's bass guitarist, John Deacon, who has not just a BSc but a First Class Honors degree in Electronics. John is the creator of the "Deacy Amp" which when connected to Brian May's homemade guitar (the Red Special) through a treble-booster could produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals. Plus he used his knowledge to keep all of Queen's electronics working.
It is hard to realize that it is only Freddie, Brian, and Roger singing in the "Operatic" section (John never sang on the records). This was 1975, well before digital recordings and autotune. Recordings were made using 24-track analog tape. The limits of tape made it necessary for the three vocalists to overdub themselves many times and "bounce" these down to successive sub-mixes. Some sections of Bohemian Rhapsody feature 180 separate overdubs!
The fifth section is the "Hard Rock" portion. In this section, Freddie sings angry lyrics addressed to an unspecified "you", accusing them of betrayal and abuse and insisting "can't do this to me, baby", before the final lines conclude with him singing, "just gotta get right outta here”.
FYI - the "Operatic" and the "Hard Rock" sections of BoRhap were featured in a scene in the 1992 film Wayne's World, in which the main character and his friends headbang in a car to the rock part. Because of the success of Wayne's World, Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released in the U.S. in 1992 and rose to Number 2 on the Billboard chart.
In the sixth and final section, the "Outro" returns back to the "Ballad" to close the circle of the song and ends with the sound of a Chinese gong.
This video was NOT live. In fact, this video is considered to be the FIRST music video. If you want to see Queen perform Bo Rhap live, watch this video of Queen's performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" live in Montreal in 1981 - th-cam.com/video/N0dbGGvsjf8/w-d-xo.html.
Though some artists had made video clips to accompany songs (including Queen themselves, it was not a common practice and they were not shown to the public.
Queen created this video because when "Bohemian Rhapsody" was scheduled to be released, the band was scheduled for a long tour and would not be available to promote the song. Plus, the video was produced so that the band could avoid miming on Top of the Pops (a popular British weekly music show) since they would have looked off miming such a complex song.
It was only after the success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" that it became a regular practice for record companies to produce promotional videos for artists' single releases. The Guardian stated it "ensured videos would henceforth be a mandatory tool in the marketing of music". These videos could then be shown on television shows around the world. The video has been hailed as launching the MTV age.

You mentioned opera, which is exactly right! Lead singer Freddie Mercury loved opera and wanted to do a song that was essentially a rock opera, telling a story using different "movements" of differing tempos and styles. Almost everyone at the time thought he was nuts (including his band-mates) but they all decided to give it a try and it hit just right. Became one of Queen's biggest hits (which is really saying something!!!) --- So glad you enjoyed it. This is part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Freddie nor Queen ever said what Bohemian Rhapsody was supposed to be about. Freddie wanted it to be up to the listener. On the surface it would appear to be about a man killing someone and going to trial for it. A lot of people think it was about him killing Farrokh Bulsara which was his real name and embracing his gay/bi persona of Freddie Mercury. Farrokh was from a very religous and conservative family. His plaintive cry "mama, I just killed a man..." would seem to be him speaking to his mother/family.

Freddie Mercury was working on writing three very different songs when he had the genius inspiration to combine them into this epic masterpiece. One of those three songs was originally going to be called "The Cowboy Song", it's the one that had to do with killing a man. A lot of people will try to tell you it's about his sexuality, but that's nonsense. Even his mother liked the song, although after his death she said it was very difficult to listen to the song since the "mamaa"s were very hard to hear. Also, the beautiful harmony that you hear in the very beginning is just Freddie harmonizing with himself of multiple tracks. It took a little over three weeks to make this recording with all of the special effects.

Yes that line of : I don't want to die, sometimes I wish I'd never been born at all - is one I think a lot if people relate to on a lot if different levels and in a lot of different ways. To me it goes hand in hand with the line from queen's "too much love will kill you" ; I feel like no one ever told the truth to me about growing up and what a struggle it would be.
I agree that one generation probably shouldn't put down another Generations music. Because music is very personal and in a way that is a very personal attack. But I think what most people mean when they say those things about auto-tune and everything is not just that they prefer the music of their generation to another one but that the talent level required was different. Today you don't have to be as talented because of things like Auto-Tune, that doesn't mean the music's not good or not fun but it doesn't require that same really high bar of talent because they couldn't fake it that way. And I think that's what most people mean oh, it's just the respect for people that were good enough to write the music they did and sing it and performance without all the extra helps and Technology that's available today.

Iconic song and band. Actually the other day when you stopped the song, there was still a few drum beats before the end. I noticed it and to be honest, when you know a song it is painful to stop it before it is actually over. Better to go a little long than to stop short (just a gentle suggestion, not a dig). Queen has a great song called March Of The Black Queen (which you should react to) that actually stops for a few seconds right near the end, then kicks back in. Some reactors have accidently stopped it at that point and hell rained down in the comment section. So go a little long then you won't have to deal with the haters. I did see that comment and I thought that person could have been a bit more gentle with their words. "Educate, don't humiliate." I will say that I truly do appreciate the musicians and vocalists that could produce to this level without Autotune and all the other techno enhancement tools of today. I always knew that when I went to a live show that they would be able to deliver and I was never disappointed. Today it seems to be a lot more about trying to get rich dropping songs than it is about creating a quality product that will stand the test of time and loving your craft. This really does seem to be the fact in far too many cases. I listen to the top 20 on Spotify and there is an electronic beat and manufactured music that mostly sounds the same and lyrics that don't really strike a note with me as well as vocals that have been modified, none of it sounds natural. I am so grateful to have been around to appreciate live music in the past decades. We were the lucky ones. I was also fortunate to live in Los Angeles where all the great bands and performers always included L.A. shows on their U.S. tours.

If you don’t recognize this - I might cry! 😅
Okay, I’m crying and smiling. This came out way before I was born - but it was still played.
This kind of “wtf?” was the same feeling I had with “Hi Ren”. It’s a long story/song and very theatrical. It’s crazy outside the box and so we’ll done.
    This dropped in 1975!
Aw, bummed you are hearing bad vibes. Give those fools NO energy and just block away. ❤

Kid, if someone lets you know that the music should be allowed to play completely, that’s not “negativity”, that’s just constructive criticism, and it’s aimed at something that will help you get more from your listening, and ultimately more pleasure from more kinds of music.
There’s nothing wrong with that. 👍🏻

This song is a metaphor. Many people will say, just because Freddie never really explained the meaning of the song, that there is no meaning to this song. Some people believe that Freddie and the band just really wanted to show off their talent and perform a song that had never been done before and that more than likely, no other band would be able to replicate. I believe that's true. The metaphor is about Freddie coming to grips with being gay. "He killed a man" the meaning is that he has killed his old self and that he has "leave you all behind to face the truth". He's crying out to his "Mama" for forgiveness. The song goes much deeper than that, but the reality is Freddie wrote this song just as he and Mary were breaking up, once she found out that he was gay.

    • @randyinvegas405
      @randyinvegas405 ปีที่แล้ว

Freddie started writing this song back in 70 or 71, before he met Mary. If you ever listen to a few of the biographys of Freddie or talk to the band members they will tell you the beginning part of BR was in Freddies head and he always played the first few notes of it on the piano when he was deep in thought

That was not a live performance, it was the studio recording , in Music video format. This song is considered the greatest Pop Rock song ever recorded. Queen were hands down the most talented , charismatic, and virtuoso bands to ever come out of the rock Pop Scene. Freddie Mercury is hailed as the greatest rock front man of all times. There was no one in the music industry who didn't honor Queen as real musical Geniuses. Michael Jackson Loved them . He and Freddie were friends and they even recorded a song together called (There Must Be More to Life Than This). Queen influenced every Major star from 1974 to Freddie's Death in 1991. The Old school Rapper M.C. Hammer was in awe of Freddie. Country Music artist Garth Brooks says that Queen was the reason he wanted to get into Music. Lady Gaga Loved them so much that she named herself after one of their songs (NO REALLY) The song is ( Radio GaGa). The previous song you reacted to (Somebody To Love) was inspired By Freddie's Love of the Queen of Soul (Aretha Franklin) . That's why it sounds so much like a gospel choir in the vocals. You need to dive deeper into these guys. Remember those were their real voices. This was all recorded many years before Auto tune , and pitch correcting were used in the studio. What you see and hear is Pure Raw talent.

  • @ellet6560
    @ellet6560 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Although Freddie never explained the song, it seems to be about coming out. In the late 60's, homosexuals were still being jailed in the UK so, even in 1974, it was very risky to a person's career to be "out". Couple that with how it would affect the band as a whole and, of course, his mother and family, so, naturally, would create quite a serious emotional conflict for Freddie.. My opinion is that BoRhap was a moshpit of every emotion that Freddie had to work through in order to show the world who he was. Turns out that his sexuality didn't matter to Queen fans, as is so obvious then and, still, today.

Really the song is not live, the part that is seen live is real live sound, but the "opera" part is sung in the studio, because live it is impossible to sing and play at the same time. But that makes this song important for something else, it is the first video clip in history (1975).

You have the gist of the song pretty much.
He just killed a man. In the next verse he is saying goodbye. It is time to answer for his crime. Then when the music switches up..... he is being judged, and the highs and the lows are like the angels in heaven and the demons in hell fighting over his soul. And in the end, he says it doesnt matter where I go. The mans life he took didnt matter to him, so what happens to his soul shouldnt matter to anyone elso. Any way the wind blows. One of the greatest songs ever written. Queen was my first favorite band, and the album (we called them albums) it is from was the first I owned as a kid. Thanks for this reaction and thanks for the little trip down memory lane I just took in my head.

This was not live. It's their studio version since they could not get those special effects on stage. This is the only song I would ever tell anyone to watch the studio version of. Other than this one be sure to only watch live versions since that will really show you who had talent and who didn't. Then you will understand why people don't appreciate the newer artists as much. They rarely have the talent of bands from the 70's or 60's or 50's because they are chosen for their looks, they look the part of a rock star so they through them in a studio, dress them up and use auto tune and other electronic fixes to make them sound good. That is not talent. There are a few since the 70's that do have talent like Garth Brooks (country singer), Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi, b-Billy Idol, even though some of the famous 80's bands started in the 70's they were not really superstars until the 80's. Then in the 90's bands like Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Guns n Roses, etc. but there is nowhere as many very talented bands as there was in the 70's. There were 100's of them in the 70's and the competition was so fierce that they had to really work hard and make sure they were good in order to make it to the top. So try to always watch live performances and us boomers have more people in our generation that any other generation so we are a good group to cater to. We have just retired or will be retiring soon so we have more time to watch young people like you find our music and so far I have not heard a single young person say that 70's music is bad or not worth listening to. They all seem to love it and say things like "I was born in the wrong decade" or "where has this music been all my life, why has no one told me!" So cater to the boomer and you do good with subscribers. When I get on to watch reactions I look up reactions to 70's bands so had you not done one you would not have had this subscriber or I would guess other ones that look up the way I do. I love seeing the expressions on the faces like you got when the music was panning from one side to the other and they were doing the operatic portion of the song. Bet you never thought you could enjoy opera huh? Freddie Mercury really liked opera. Keep up with the Queen reactions and also try Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven, Aerosmith - Dream On, The Rolling Stones - Paint it Black, Bee Gees - Staying Alive, Cat Stevens - Father and Son, Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle, and any other bands you get requests from on those since once you start those you will be getting a lot of requests.

No hate here...I understand why you cut off Somebody to Love cuz yes, it was technically over. But the last second when Freddie acts like he punches Brian in the face is a classic moment in that video! Lol

The first part of the song with all the guys is ALL FREDDIE MERCURY singing. The band is lynching for the video.

If i was you and if you really like Queen i would definitely react to pretty much as many songs as you can. Dragon Attack is an excellent song.. well all of there songs are unbelievable live or studio. And your channel would grow very fast.. believe me.

    Welcome to Rock Opera. 😂
Just keep in mind when listening to older music that autotune wasn't even invented and sold as a product until 1996.
Word of caution/advice? Some rock fans will get extremely upset if you interrupt a guitar solo by a great artist. Just wanted to forewarn you.

“Mama, just killed a man”, not “Mama just killed a man”. 😆
    Understandable mistake.
