I watched Fernando pitch on more than one occasion in Houston and he won every game. Always a sell out. Fans would travel from Mexico to watch him play. It was always an electric atmosphere. What's more, I had the privilege of watching him pitch two innings during the 1986 All Star Game in Houston. He struck out 5 hitters in a row. It was the most dominating pitching sequence I have ever seen! His greatness was cut short by arm injuries but boy what incredible memories he left us when he was in his prime. RIP, El Toro. I am from Merida, Yucatan. Mike Brito came here to scout a shortstop playing for the Cordoba Cafeteros (from Veracruz), playing that day in Merida against the Yucatan Lions. I actually went to that game. After watching Fernando play for the Yucatan Lions in the old Carta Clara stadium (I was 12-13 years old at the time), even booing him in a couple of occasions :) it was truly surreal to watch him on TV and see him do what he did in MLB a couple of years later. In the late 50's, many Mexican Americans were forced off their land. The community of Chavez Ravine was to be leveled for the development of Dodger Stadium. This is still a sore spot for many Mexicans to this day. However, the emergence of "Fernandomania' in the early 80's took off the sting just a tad.
