Dan Patrick can't overstate Fernando Valenzuela's importance, impact | Dan Patrick Show | NBC Sports
/ nbcsports
Fernando looking to the sky just before he delivers a pitch is one of the coolest things you will ever see on a baseball diamond. Now, Fernando fans are looking to the sky to bid farewell to an icon.
His story is amazing Fernando Mania was a national story in 81
Dan, as a 54 LA native that saw Fernando pitch many times at Blue Heaven on earth, I thank you for the warm words. This is a tough loss for us.
Legends never die
Us Mexicans are crying and that’s something we don’t do unless it’s family or legends like Fernando rest in peace
Or you run out of Modelo beer
No one is mentioning what a good hitter he was.
Thank you Mr Patrick, for your words and appreciation of our beloved Fernando Valenzuela. We mexicans are in grief, He really meant very much for us. I also never met him. But I had the privilege to watch in real time many of his performances, and to feel the people here in México, when he was pitching. I knew I admire him very much, but now that he is no longer with us, I realize that I admire much more, than I ever thought. A mexican baseball fan. Eduardo Ramírez.
Respect. Viva #34👏
Bravo Dan ! Very eloquent and precise. Congrats Sir. Wonderful way of describing it for us. Thank you Sir.
Should’ve been in the hall of fame
1981 was a great year. Fernandomania, then the Dodgers against the Yankees in the World Series. It was good time to be alive.
Great segment Dan!
I always remember him looking up when he pitched, and remember trying to emulate that pitch as a 11yr old kids.
As a lover of pitching, which doesn't exist in baseball today, I mourn Fernando's passing.
He needs to be in the Hall of Fame!!
He was mi Idol , I was looking on the news paper to see what he did a night before in the game and to see him gone at this age ,,,,, wow REP Fernando
Hall of Famer or not, there is literally nobody in there now that I would not fear putting Fernando up against in a big game. He was not at all a fearsome sight on the mound but I bet there were plenty of big league hitters that dreaded facing him. Says a lot about who he was as a pitcher. The best thing about him, and something NO pitcher today can say at all, is he got better as the game went along. If you didn't get him the first couple of innings - you were not going to get him at all. Descanse en paz Fernando.
The importance of Fernando Valenzuela to baseball and, in particular, the Dodgers, was similar and different to the importance of Jackie Robinson. The beginning of Fernando's career was incredible. The only pitcher in baseball history to win the Cy Young award and rookie of the year. He significantly increased the attendance of the Latino community at Dodger stadium like you wouldn't believe and it is still felt to this day. And he managed to remain humble his entire life notwithstanding that.
Thank you Dan for bringing light to this wonderful pitcher that carries the weight of the entire Hispanic Baseball community
El chapo was born in Sinaloa, Mexico. Fernando was born in Sonora mexico. Not the same town at all.
LOL not even the same state...but it was still generous of Dan to talk like he did of Fernando. No biggie.
@@TheSmarq17I think it was bad reporting/journalism and poor taste to mention someone that shouldn't be mentioned at all. Taints the potrayal of Fernando who is beloved and should be remembered for being an incredible baseball player and a stand up guy.
RIP #34 ⚾️
@@JoseContreras-c3u I agree. It was a poor choice to reference that person. I have listened to Dan for many years now and feel he meant no insult by it though. I will always remember Fernando exactly as you describe him and one mistake by Dan won't ruin that for me. Nothing to take personally for certain in my opinion - like I said, no biggie. RIP #34 EL TORO
I belive when someone passes away their career and life and contributions to the game after the sport they played should be considered as an honorary HOF'er.
He is in my HOF Case, always have been.
Fernando had a phenomenal rookie season in 1981 and was a solid pitcher for the better part of a decade after that. His impact on baseball goes far beyond his stats as a pitcher.
Nice work
He needs an statue soon was excellent l was a kid whe watched his games on the 80's
💯 🙏🏽
8 games with 5 shutouts..........Dan!
Never will be another FERNADO MANIA or something similar, not a USA player, not a Japanese player will do and will move all the baseball world as Fernando did, never again, and never again will a pitcher throw 8 complete games in a row never, he is in a place of his own, LEGEND.
Thank you Fernando…
Seen him at the big A for a preseason game (freeway series) He was walking into the stadium and all the kids were saying Fernando , Fernando !!! He just walked by and ignored them all . ALWAYS HATED HIM !!!
There was a strike in MLB in 81, he helped fans forget about that.
Sad news. Fernando should definitely be in the HOF. Larry Doby is in. Fernando had better numbers that Larry.
The HOf is BS. Rose, Valenzuela , Garvey and Parker should all be in. Politics when the HOF is littered with players who had troubled personal lives. And other ones covered up as well.
The problem with the HOF is that the writers have to much power, if they don’t like you or one person doesn’t like you then you’re not in .
It's an absolute travesty that he is not in the HOF!
El Toro in his rookie year: shut out in his first major league game, 7 more in the rookie season, wins the Cy Young Award, wins the rookie of the year, ending with a world championship. I'm sure I missed a few things as well. BTW, 17 years in the majors !
I moved to a small town in northern mexico two years ago, and the biggest sport is not socceer. Its baseball. And every one of the kids wants to be fernando valenzuela. The most common baseball cap us not the NY Yankees. Its the LA Dodgers.
Why he didn't deserve hall of Fame?
Seen him at the big A for a preseason game (freeway series) He was walking into the stadium and all the kids were saying Fernando , Fernando !!! He just walked by and ignored them all . ALWAYS HATED HIM !!!
Why are my comments being deleted ??? 100% fact !!!
Complete games? That is the question today's baseball pitchers ask, "What is that?"
There was some good coverage of him in 2021 (the 20th anniversary of Fernandomania). I think it's the LA Times.
That would have been the 40th anniversary of Fernandomania
@@MJC_2112 yep, you're right. having a tua tagliavoa moment.
How come most pitchers now look like robots? I haven't seen any windups that are different, unusual, or flamboyant like back in the days of Luis Tiant, Fernando, and others. I just don't get it. Some of the pitchers don't even look comfortable in their delivery.
El chapo 😅, no he was not born in the same town. El chapo was born in Sinaloa, and Fernando in Sonora. Different states of México.
El Chapo wasn't born in Sonora. he was born in La Tuna, Badiraguato, Sinaloa
And yet..................Fernando Valenzuela is not in the Hall of Fame. He won more games than both Sandy Koufax and Dizzy Dean and certainly had a greater cultural impact than both.
F 34 !!!
Come on, who directs this show?? El chapos Town and Fernandos Towns are at least couple hundred miles apart... Its in Wikipedia, don't need to be a top notch researcher to find out, why would You use a fact like that ???
Why in the h*ll is Fernando not in the Hall of Fame?
Seen him at the big A for a preseason game (freeway series) He was walking into the stadium and all the kids were saying Fernando , Fernando !!! He just walked by and ignored them all . ALWAYS HATED HIM !!!
When women are running on to the field to try and kiss you... I mean c'mon!
Sure enough Valenzuela is already being heralded as one of the “All-Time Greatest ever” which is nonsense. He was really good but he didn’t even win 200 games (173-153, 3.54 ERA) and won 20 games in a season only once (21-11 in 1986). To his credit he did win a CY and was ROY in ‘81. But people will demand Valenzuela is put in the HOF otherwise it’s “racist.”
He was born in Sonora not Sinaloa!
