Fernando looking to the sky just before he delivers a pitch is one of the coolest things you will ever see on a baseball diamond. Now, Fernando fans are looking to the sky to bid farewell to an icon.

Thank you Mr Patrick, for your words and appreciation of our beloved Fernando Valenzuela. We mexicans are in grief, He really meant very much for us. I also never met him. But I had the privilege to watch in real time many of his performances, and to feel the people here in México, when he was pitching. I knew I admire him very much, but now that he is no longer with us, I realize that I admire much more, than I ever thought. A mexican baseball fan. Eduardo Ramírez.

The importance of Fernando Valenzuela to baseball and, in particular, the Dodgers, was similar and different to the importance of Jackie Robinson. The beginning of Fernando's career was incredible. The only pitcher in baseball history to win the Cy Young award and rookie of the year. He significantly increased the attendance of the Latino community at Dodger stadium like you wouldn't believe and it is still felt to this day. And he managed to remain humble his entire life notwithstanding that.

Hall of Famer or not, there is literally nobody in there now that I would not fear putting Fernando up against in a big game. He was not at all a fearsome sight on the mound but I bet there were plenty of big league hitters that dreaded facing him. Says a lot about who he was as a pitcher. The best thing about him, and something NO pitcher today can say at all, is he got better as the game went along. If you didn't get him the first couple of innings - you were not going to get him at all. Descanse en paz Fernando.

@@TheSmarq17I think it was bad reporting/journalism and poor taste to mention someone that shouldn't be mentioned at all. Taints the potrayal of Fernando who is beloved and should be remembered for being an incredible baseball player and a stand up guy.

@@JoseContreras-c3u I agree. It was a poor choice to reference that person. I have listened to Dan for many years now and feel he meant no insult by it though. I will always remember Fernando exactly as you describe him and one mistake by Dan won't ruin that for me. Nothing to take personally for certain in my opinion - like I said, no biggie. It's an absolute travesty that he is not in the HOF!
El Toro in his rookie year: shut out in his first major league game, 7 more in the rookie season, wins the Cy Young Award, wins the rookie of the year, ending with a world championship. I'm sure I missed a few things as well. BTW, 17 years in the majors !

Sad news. Fernando should definitely be in the HOF. Larry Doby is in. Fernando had better numbers that Larry.
The HOf is BS. Rose, Valenzuela , Garvey and Parker should all be in. Politics when the HOF is littered with players who had troubled personal lives. And other ones covered up as well.

How come most pitchers now look like robots? I haven't seen any windups that are different, unusual, or flamboyant like back in the days of Luis Tiant, Fernando, and others. I just don't get it. Some of the pitchers don't even look comfortable in their delivery.

Sure enough Valenzuela is already being heralded as one of the “All-Time Greatest ever” which is nonsense. He was really good but he didn’t even win 200 games (173-153, 3.54 ERA) and won 20 games in a season only once (21-11 in 1986). To his credit he did win a CY and was ROY in ‘81. But people will demand Valenzuela is put in the HOF otherwise it’s “racist.”
