    The Sony A7R II was introduced in 2015 and was a game changer for mirrorless cameras, in photography and videography/filmmaking. In this video I explore if the A7R II is still worth it in 2023, do a long term review of this camera and show some samples. I talk about its history, comparing it to the Sony A7, A7R, A7S as well as the Canon 5DSR and Nikon D810. I then talk about why I am finally selling it and compare it to newer cameras like the Sony A7IV, A7R IV, and A7R V. Whether it was street photography, wildlife photography, travel photography, landscape photography or filming youtube videos, the A7R2 always was by my side. This is the best hybrid mirrorless camera under $1000 for beginner or intermediate photographers, filmmakers or youtubers.

    I still keep my A7rii at the ready! Yes I have upgraded to the A7RV but a few very important things missing. The A7rii yes first with IBIS so sticks are used less, In '17 took on a trip to Arizona Antelope Canyon I forgot in my car the camera plate for my tripod so hand holding but a test of Bracketing 3 @ +/- 2 ev in the darkened Canyon worked while the Canon and Nikon were on sticks doing long exposures also I just got the FE 12-24mm F4 G lens and no one came close to 12mm maybe 16mm I was able to lay on my back shooting straight up or lay at the others feet and best I could shoot anywhere not harnessed to some sticks, back at the hotel about 10 other photographers gasped at the wide shots as well the bracketed IBIS. Also a morning at Horseshoe I was able to use the Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 and got panorama shots in 3:2 while others were at the edge doing 180 degree panos on sticks in the wind. Next to the Grand Canyon I had brought my $800 pano rig but was time consuming setting up in crowds so look and the dail there is a Panorama section that can be done on sticks or by hand even a 100mm shot came out great. The cream on the top that few know about and will keep a high price on the camera and all M 1 and M 2 Sony cameras are the on camera apps from Sony Playmemories and the main one is the "Digital Filter" that is mostly used for Sunsets/Sunrises BUT I discovered using for Milky Ways over lit cities/towns with sky glow above it does everything in camera using every setting you can use in a single shot from WB to SS and ect. Sky then foreground in RAW and edited a little before sending to SD card in raw or jpeg. Way better than carrying a bag full of filters and holders out into the darkness!
    Sony discontinued Playmemories apps in M3 and above but with them on the camera your camera is a golden for life. You can still buy and download them for I call pennies compared to cost just for filters. Also great for milky waters th rivers/surf. I live in a light polluted are and have gotten the MW above my house while shooting under a street light and orange lit skies. Have you ever done lit caves one of the best projects to ever do!!!

      Yeah, I still use the camera, and I downloaded all the apps you are missing with the new generation cameras. The only downside is the weak battery life, but I have 4 batteries so not big problem.

    This camera will go down as a legend...I still never upgraded after I got my A7r2 and its been 3 years now...I have taken and still take AMAZING photos with this beast...My portfolio is loaded with great pics from so many events and family and friends think Im a Pro lol...but its definitely not a action cam but it is everything else...it takes great photos in low light even with 42mp...battery isn't the best but we learned to carry multiple ones....I bought the Sony 85mm 1.8 and the Sony 24-105 g oss and Sony 50mm 1.8 and all do super well with this legend...I love you video cause it makes me feel even better that I own one and justifies walking into Best Buy and paying 1200 for it...thx for checking my rant out lol

      You just don't need an "upgrade" because that "upgrade" product has not yet been made by Sony... As long as you don't feel that 61MP worth the steep price, you are good with R2. Actually you can make it an "action cam" by using an ultra-wide lens (I use Tamron 17-28, 17mm is about the same FOV as a GoPro), paired with a motorized gimbal (I use Ronin-SC), it's effectively a much much better GoPro. I actually got interested in the Tamron 17-28 after I got huge disappointment with GoPro. After watching tons of the GoPro marketing videos which misguided me into thinking that the "5.3K video" is better than the "old 4K" of this "old photography" camera, I got that GoPro Hero 10 and WTF??? It's not even on-par with an iPhone. I use iMac with 5K screen so that GoPro video just fall apart it's unwatchable. However with A7R2 everything just hold up very very strong. I even tried to find an solution to mount it onto my road-bike. If you doing light "action cam" things like hiking, vloging, skateboarding or even filming your ski buddy then just get an gimbal. That's how the GoPro commercials are shot. If you shot APS-C crop mode you can even just get some really cheap APS-C wide lenses like 10-18 for the job.

    I graduated as a computer science student back in 1984 😲, and now I am retired with a Sony A7Rii. I used to shoot Fuji (and Sony before that), and last year traded my X-H1 to return to Sony with and A7Rii. While I prefer landscape photography, I also enjoy macro, and the A7Rii is great for both. I was starting to think maybe I should return to Fuji, but your video helped me realize the Rii gives me more than what I need. And as much as I like the Fuji colour science, I am a Sony fan boy at heart. Thanks for the video. Great details, with a nostalgic vibe. Really enjoyed it. Hopefully you have graduated by now or are getting close, so you can start earning the big bucks to feed your photographic pursuits 🙂!

By now, I use a smaller brother D850 & D700 & even a Canon G7 X Mk III mini for on the fly or just a great sidekick. The Canon S120 was (is) an amazing mini beast. What's your go to mini pocket cam?

      That sounds like a great kit! I actually don't have a great pocket point and shoot camera. I've been looking at some for a while now, because I would love a camera that is extremely small and can be taken absolutely everywhere, and is better than my phone. I have carried a leica mini for film for a while but I haven't gotten a digital compact camera yet, and I want it to be cheap because I don't want to be worrying about breaking it. I just got the Fujifilm XF 27mm f2.8 pancake lens today for my X-T30 and with that it is quite small, so I'm quite excited about that. There definitely will be a video about it :)

    I am wed to the Fuji X-T4, partly for its photo and video specs. (Sony has lagged behind Fuji in video specifications.) However, I just bought an A7R2 because of its sensor and processor. There is something about Sony’s “WYSIWYG” JPG colors, and the dynamic range is so good. Frankly, I am cheating on Fuji to see if I want to switch to Sony for good. The A7II or A7RII are good for the Sony-curious. If I decide that Sony is where I should be, I’ll upgrade to the A7IV - whose video specs are finally “there.”

    This is an absolutely excellent video. It is both informative and heartfelt. I sold my Sony A7RII and I have regretted it ever since. This video helps me realize I should reacquire. But I'm tempted by the A7RIII. However, with the addition of a battery grip, I found the RII to be a superstar.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the kind words! It's definitely amazing with a battery grip, but now that I have the A7IV there is little reason for me to keep the A7RII as well. But I am curious, why do you regret selling it? Did you not sell it in favour of an upgrade?

    • @superbug1977
      @superbug1977 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@futc.photography I sold the A7RII because I was unhappy with the focusing system. It is also true that I was having trouble getting used to the focusing, having used Canon cameras for so long. I still own the classic 5D and the Canon 6D mark I. It was the eye detection focusing that I really found lacking on the Sony. But the Sony got me out capturing images more than any other camera I have ever owned. Consequently, I have recently purchased a Sony A7RIII but have yet to receive it. I am looking forward to using the Sony system again, particularly because of the improved focusing characteristics. Of course, I also love the Sony images. They aren't better than Canon, just different.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@superbug1977 Interesting that you found the Eye-AF on the A7RII lacking. I actually used it quite a bit for portraits with the 85mm f1.8 and bound the side button on that lens to Eye-AF and that worked extremely well. The Eye-AF on the A7IV of course is faster and you can tell it updates quicker, but I always found the Eye detection to be more than sufficient on the A7RII. I hope the A7RIII you've ordered will revamp that love and get you out to shoot!

    Technology evolves in big leaps followed by small tweaks, A7r2 is that big leap. The same thing happens when the Canon released that 5D mark II, that's when camera reaches a whole new height and brings whole new features that changed industry that everyone recognized. The 42MP is mind-blowing, it's the real deal. The AF is a game-changer, so good that you just forget such a thing. All the other things are just bonus, that's good to have, but not critical to miss. Actually it took me years, for an ordinary power user, who don't shoot everyday for a living, to understand and grasp all the features of A7R2. For now after all these years, finally I can say I now know 80% of its functionalities and features and have maybe used about 80% of its full-potential. I got mine sometime around 2016 actually that's a retirement a gift for my dad but after finding out that all he used is AUTO, I just snatched it back to put it into "better use". I want to stress how good it is even in full AUTO mode. A pixel is a pixel, you still have all those technology advantages even in AUTO, it's just you don't directly interact with it. After all these years it's still my main camera and I don't feel ANY need to "upgrade", because all the successors are just "small tweaks" but this A7r2 is that "big leap". A7R3 is the same camera with a bigger battery and the TOUCH-SCREEN + JOYSTICK. This is THE GAME-CHANGER for selecting "focus point" and "metering spot". Without these two, you just can't select focus point and metering spot efficiently, you ended up just don't use them ---- and actually you don't need them, if 99% you do hand-held, just half-press and reframe. Or if you want to decouple the focus and metering, just do AEL and back button focus. These things in A7R3 are good, but you don't absolutely need them. The R4 is a 61MP R3, and R5 is a R4 with some new "AI" based gimmicks. The 61MP vs 42MP feels like half-step of a "big leap", but it's just not big enough like from 20-something to 42MP. What you can do on R5 but you can't on R2? Very little. Even for the video part, I don't actually feel I'm limited by the camera rather than myself. Yes 10-bit S-log and this and that, but do you even know how to "color grading"? Would you ever even bother with it? DO you actually encountered the trouble of 8-bit yourself? Can you actually notice the "line-skipping" on 4K from A7r2 full-frame mode? If some if not all of these answers are NO, all you need is A7R2. That next big leap has not yet to come.

    Watching this after an incredible deal. I scored an a7r II at some 12 000 actuations for the ridiculous amount of 500 EUR. It had the infamous problem with the message where the camera did not finish writing and it demanded the same card to be inserted. After a lot of research, I fixed it by swiftly pressing 10 times both messages. I gave it for a sensor cleanup, and viewfinder cleanup, since it did not switch automatically to LCD screen. I paid just 50 EUR more for that and for a silicone case. I own so many batteries and cards...I bought 28-60 to make a compact point and shoot, and the APS-C on gives some addition range. I have an a7c, but I was shocked to see the detail - a flying seagull, not in focus...the eyes were so detailed, as if in focus. I can easily use it for 10 years and sell it for the same price.

    Now that I've finally made my dream come true, and after buying the A7R2 for 3,800 RMB, or $530, on a second-hand trading platform in China, I have to say that the performance of this camera is a monster, even if you switch to a Canon lens, you can focus very quickly, and you can shoot in 4K, and so on, I believe I can use it for ten years and take more good photos.

    Hey man, what lens did you use for a majority of the photos you showcased here? I am picking up an A7R2 next month with a 28-60mm
    Pretty new to Sony but I went on your list of Tamron lenses and it says that they are E-mounts? Does that crop the image at all on the A7R2's full frame sensor?

With my, 55mm 1.8 zeiss, 16-35mm f/4 zeiss, and 35mm 1.4 GM lenses, I feel no need to upgrade to another camera. Most of my shots are landscape and some still portraits, I have zero need for shooting fast subjects. A7r2 for ever.

    Long term I worry about Sony's reliability. The shutter issue comes to mind. This has been a problem with the A7iii series. In fact there's a law suit about it supposedly. The shutter just got stuck on my A7Rii ! 5+ years old, 35,000 actuations. This should never have happened on a camera that cost $2,700. at the time. If I wasn't so invested in Sony lenses I probably would be jumping ship. I've decided to get the shutter replaced ($600) for several reasons. It's the cheapest option. It buys me time on purchasing another (probably used) camera in the future. I have a lot of batteries for this camera and my A6000 (back up camera) uses the same battery. I'm a landscape photographer so the A7RII has been more than adequate. What gets me about this camera is the fact that Sony released this camera with such horrible battery life. That's inexcusable.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh that's very unfortunate, I haven't heard about shutter issues being common with the A7RII but it can always happen :/ Very unlucky that it happened after just 35k actuations :( The battery life isn't great that's true, but the batteries are also pretty small and easy to carry, I've also bought a 3rd party battery grip which allows you to double your battery life.

    • @quyvuhoang3282
      @quyvuhoang3282 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @xuchenglin6256
      @xuchenglin6256 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      About the same of the shutter issue. Still struggling with it. Mine could "fix" by a "knock" by your palm and now I just get used to it. Though if you use if to capture important moment that will be a problem. IF you don't care "dynamic range" (in landscape probably you care) then silent shooting is an option. You still have 12-bit that's still more than enough in most situations.

I used it for pro work and withstood like a beast in all the stresses I put it under. Absolutely loved it. Everything on my channel was filmed with the R2. The image quality out of that sensor was impeccable. But unfortunately it was lacking in the video department and the joystick on the newer Sonys is a massive improvement. Ill forever remember this camera.

    I switched from the Sony A7M2 direct to A7RM3, which is one of my best camera decisions I've ever made. Later an a6000 followed because of the size and video capabilities. Then a Leica Q made it to me, which is by far the most exciting photo experience I've ever made. All three cameras have their part in my photography. All cameras and all lenses are bought second hand. Since the acquisition of those three cameras, my GAS is gone forever. No need for more. No need for something new. You can't beat an A7RIII, an a6000 and a Leica Q. Not a Leica M, not any Canon or Nikon or Fuji or you name it.
    You have to go for a Hasselblad to make me weak. But, in fact … nope. I've tried one. It doesn't work for me.

    All good advice. All spot on. I kept looking at the A7R5 for the dog eye feature, and yes my dogs' eyes are worth being tracked in focus, but I also kept looking at what has always been coming out of my A7R2. There's really no reason to jump up to the 5 besides my own lack of self control and disposable cash. I could buy it, I just don't need to. The A7R2 really is amazing. Anybody that isn't as fortunate as myself to have the money for a 5 can still obtain the 2 for almost nothing. It's still a brilliant piece of equipment. Yes, buy good glass for it. In ten years that can go with you when you upgrade to the A7R9. Until then you'll be in good hands.

    Thanks for the nice video.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching! That is a very difficult question. I think it boils down to the form factor, the a6400 is a decent chunk smaller and aps-c lenses are smaller as well. Another thing to consider is: The raw files from the A7RII are very large, a decent computer is needed to edit them and they eat up A LOT of harddrive space. The quality is definitely better out of the A7RII, but the convenience is higher with the A6400 so it might be a better choice.

    • @Sourav1973
      @Sourav1973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@futc.photography Thank you so much for your prompt reply. After watching your video, my choice is somewhat tilted towards A7RII. However, as you have said, the A6400 also has its own advantages. I guess, my child will have the final say, of course after watching your video. 🙂

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome to hear! Definitely can't go wrong with the A7RII, I would have given everything to have an A7RII when I was 14! 😂

    • @umfall
      @umfall ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd also like to give my two cents on this one. Having used both cameras, I have to say, its a tough choice, but it comes down to preference and shooting style. The a6400 being the way newer camera means it is equipped with real time tracking and the insane Eye-AF feature. Looking through the viewfinder kinda makes it look fake, thats how good it is. But don't get me wrong, the a7rii is no slouch either. It might just not be suited for fast action as well.
      If you shoot in low light though, the a7rii will handily outperform the a6400, just because it has IBIS. You would need to step up to the a6600 to get that.
      To me the deciding factor would be ergonomics. As I like to fiddle with settings quite a bit. Especially with long lenses, while sooting wildlife. There I find it essential to be able to change the shutter speed and Aperture on the fly. The a6400 just lacks one of the dials an therefore I find it more cumbersome. Another key feature for the a7rii is the exposure comp dial, easily my most used dial, when shooting in Aperture priority (my most used mode) using auto iso.
      Sure, you can work around that using some keybinds in the menu, but it just feels less fluid.
      Another factor might be price. The bodys may be similar, but great lenses can be had for the a6400 from say Sigma. These are obscenely sharp and quite affordable. Though you are limited to fewer choices. Sure you can buy FF glass, but it kind feels like a waste. That beinf said. That opens the upgrade path to FF in the future.
      Last but not least, the a7rii has a waaay better girp (though still imperfect). The a6400 just feels hard to hold.
      So yeah, just my opinion. Hope that helps :)

      @@futc.photography I love the A7c. It's really the best at what it does. But I decided to switch to Fuji for my tiny body everyday kinda cam- mostly because I try to spend near zero time editing and their bodies jpeg really well.
      Keeping the a7Rii because it would be harder to get such a mint copy again. Where-as the A7c is pretty easy to get. I also just really like the physical size of the a7Rii and it's ease of use for me. I had some quibbles with the A7c. Mostly the bad EVF, no front dial, and hoop jumping to get the exposure triangle handy. Overall it's a tiny beast tho.

    I have Nikon D7200 and some lenses, I was thinking upgrading to D810 36 MP ( body about $650-800 ) or Sony A7R ii 42 MP (body about $800-900) as I wanted to jump into the full frame / higher resolution , will use large prints as I have 44 inch printer,
    Will not be recording any videos ,
    Sony glass seems to be more expensive whether it’s native or third party , Nikon seems more budget friendly for example 70-200 tamron 2.8 VC you can find in great condition as low $400 where for Sony will cost to arm and a leg,
    Will be using mostly for still photography photography, some action with kids running at the soccer game or the park, and some studio portraits,
    anyhow, any suggestions?

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony glass might be a bit more expensive compared to older DSLR glass but the quality of lenses you are getting is very very good. For example the Sony 85mm F1.8 is an extremely sharp lens wide open and is an insanely good lens for portraits, one of my favourite lenses I've ever used. You can get it for a pretty good price nowadays, and the tamron 28-75 f2.8 which is my most used lens can also be had quite affordably on the used market. I think investing in an A7RII might be the better call in terms of future proofing, while the lenses are a tad more expensive, you have an easy upgrade path for the body in the next decade while being able to keep all lenses. Also the A7RII is more portable and has features like eye-af.

Heart about you only need 2 if you are on R3. Though you need to switch to the mirrorless way of shooting, that is when you finished, just turn off the camera. It's designed to be used in this way and frequent on/off is the original design. That's different than DSLR's turn on and forget.

    Do you recommend any lens for landscape? I have an A7R II but i never actually upgraded lenses and would love to get into photography

      I am a big fan of my Tamron 28-75 F2.8 (I have the slightly older version). It is very good optically and gives you great versatility for landscapes.

      Yeah haha, I've just added some links to MPB in the description, I buy a lot of my used gear there because they give you a warranty and often have very similar prices to ebay or alike.

    Top Video!
Viel Erfolg!

    Great video, I just ordered an A7r II as my first camera and was wondering if I had made a mistake. Do you have a lens recommendation?

      Thank you! My favorite e-mount lens is the FE 85mm F1.8 I also have a video on it on my channel. If you are looking for a versatile zoom lens the tamron 28-75 f2.8 is amazing and is by far my most used lens.
