    I fell in love with analog/film photography a while ago and spent an entire year almost exclusively using film for my photography. Especially disposable cameras have such a distinct look that I love. But I was getting inconsistent results and the price increases by Kodak and Fujifilm ultimately made look for a digital film look alternative. That is why I spent the past year finding out how I can replicate the Film Look with digital cameras like the Fujifilm X-T30, Fujifilm X-Pro 1, Fujifilm GFX 50R, Sony A7RII, Sony A7IV, Nikon D2X. These aren't even all of the cameras I have used to try and replicate images with analog qualities. I have heard of people who have bought the Fujifilm X100V or Fujifilm X-E4 just for the Fujifilm Film Simulations to get a similar look to Portra 400, Portra 800, Kodachrome, etc. In this video I go over my process for replicating the disposable camera film look, based on over a year of testing and research.

    Here's the answer: when everyone used film, everyone wanted a cleaner noise free image because it was rare & hard to achieve. Now when everyone has a digital camera and clean clinical images, they want something rare: all that film grain. It's human psychology, and it makes some of us feel good. That's it.

      Brian Eno: “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided.”

    I really like the "character" of disposable camera lenses, and I think using one means you open yourself up to all the happy accidents and not controlling the result that much. Congratulations on designing your own disposable camera lens. It took me more than 20 prototypes and tests with different types of lenses, from Fuji cameras, Ilford, Kodak, and Kodak Professional, to find the right focal length and design the lens in a way that is easy to 3D print :-) I really like the look of your lens and the photos you took with it. The answer to your own question at the beginning of spending thousands to simulating shooting on a disposable camera or film in general is simple, Aesthetic appeal!
    You can combine the aesthetic appeal of vintage media with the convenience of modern technology. Also depending on how much you shoot, film costs and development can quickly ramp up to more than the initial investment of a digital camera.

  • @thepanduuh
    @thepanduuh 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I did the disposable camera lens into the body cap thing and I also 3D printed myself an adapter ring. My issue was the focus plane was just wack if you put the lens right into the body without some sort of adapter to offset the lens from the sensor (can move closer to the sensor or farther away depending on intended use).
    I'm definitely interested in what testing you did to find the offset for a usable focus plane.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We printed several different versions, the first versions were also way too close to the sensor. We did some math to find a ball-park number and Paul printed some thin rings that he inserted gradually to increase the distance to the sensor and ultimately find the best offset.

    I started shooting digital for the first time only 3 years ago. I bought a CCD Nikon DX. I tweaked the JPGs setting to emulate 2 films. Close enough. I must say the best thing is Auto ISO for me, sounds dumb but that’s the one thing I hated about film, being stuck to a specific ISO for 36 shots. 100-800 is enough when you come from film. I do it all in camera, zero editing.

    Hey - purchased both your presets and having fun with them! Just a bit of constructive feedback - a small tweak I would ask for: when saving the preset untick the white balance, exposure and contrast settings so that these aren't reset when applying the preset.

    @raxzal_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi there! Love the video! I have a x100 with the little efx20. Have you tried using film simulation specifically for this? I know that certain film simulations require altering the white balance. In doing so the flash would skew colors? Would love to hear if you test this!

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! Hmmmm I haven't tried film simulations for this look but that's an interesting question. The Portra 400 recipe I usually have on my xt30 just as a default look has a daylight balanced WB (with a warm shift) so everything turns out fine. I guess you'd have to try some recipe with weird WB settings and see if you get any usable skin tones with a flash. But I'm guessing the recipe's that use very weird white balance shifts are quite stylized anyways and skin tones aren't realistic anymore anyways.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You can set the iso manually of course, but I just used auto ISO for simplicity :) modern cameras have such good noise performance that it doesn't really make a difference for the images and I added grain in lightroom afterwards anyways so the iso doesn't really matter. Setting it to auto just makes sure you're getting a proper exposure 😊

      And while we’re going down this ridiculous rabbit hole. Did you know there is a Fuji quick snap tele 100mm disposable camera?

      The 7artisans UFO lens is criminally underrated especially if you use a lot of flash. I use it on my main micro four thirds setup and just swap it with the 20mm 1.7 here and there.

    Das klingt vielleicht doof und komisch, aber ich würde mir echt wünschen das du Videos in deutsch machst.. Grafik und Aufbau sind echt toll! In Deutschland gibt es niemanden der solche Videos macht.. finde die sehr an northborders angelehnt und sowas brauchen wir hier!! ❤

    I imagine if I don't have a 3D printer, maybe a dust cap can be used to house the disposable camera lens, it's just a matter to drill a whole in the center for it.

      I've seen people try it with a fujifilm body cap but it didn't work well, the distance to the sensor is way off unfortunately

    Nice! Or you can just use a disposable camera and get the real thing 😀 Also, old digicams with CCD sensors can get this look. My choice is the Canon Powershot G3 but there are quite a few nice ones. Lastly, there are a few great iPhone apps to get the disposable look. My favorite is an app called Sweet Film, it comes the closest to the disposable look Ive ever seen AND it does video. Daze Cam is also really good and then there is NOMO Cam which has several disposable camera simulations. Lots of options.

    Habe mir das Video angeschaut, für gut befunden, Presets angeschaut für gut befunden. Gekauft. Nein Spaß beiseite, super Aufarbeitung des wehleidigen Themas. Ich habe mich selbst anhand anderer Presets oder einfach von Grund auf hingesetzt und versucht mir selbst ein paar Presets zu erstellen die den Look haben. Habe es aber nie zu meiner vollen Zufriedenheit geschafft. Andere Creator verlangen unverhältnismäßig viel Kohle dafür, aber du hast meiner Meinung genau den Sweetsport getroffen und obendrein bekommt man nicht nur den Look sondern das ganze Set auch ohne Grain. Eigentlich ein Nobrainer das Pack für 10$ oder umgerechnet circa 16Euro mitzunehmen. Geht man halt einmal weniger zu McDonalds und schafft sich dafür super Presets ran. Also von mir schonmal eine eindeutige Kaufempfehlung! ✌

    As someone shooting film regularly in 2024, I'm not getting the "dark and dreamy" film thing. Unless we're talking about slide film, we would typically over expose for shadows a bit before underexposing for highlights. I'm not entirely sure there's anything magic about color film whether color negative or slides. And good color film tends to have almost undetectable grain. B&W, there's magic there for sure, but it's still more about the process and experience that informs your approach than the output just from it being film.

    • @futc.photography
      @futc.photography  หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes, to mimic the film. The look the lens gives and the look you get from the film are quite different things which you need to combine.

    Somehow I don't get it. We all have a modern fuji state of the art-tech photo making machine but we keep going to the the film look and the retro flicks with old sometimes bad broken lenses to achieve something you can achieve with a... film camera. a plain old film camera. wich used to be cheaper less than a decade ago, but stil cheaper than you average fujifilm XT whatever.
    I also am guitly of this, I very much like the retro look. but if you are honest, a very expensive device with a very cheap lens... in the end it does not matter which device you use to take the photo. it is what and how you take the photograph

    Why don’t people just shoot film? I mean. If everybody spent the time they have trying to emulate film into actually shooting it. You’d get 100% accurate film looks 100% of the time lol
