    More on the Austrian eagle: The current coat of arms of the Republic of Austria has been in use in its first forms by the First Republic of Austria since 1919. Between 1934 and Anschluss in 1938, the Federal State used a different coat of arms, which consisted of a double-headed eagle without the hammer and sickle. The establishment of the Second Republic in 1945 saw the return of the original arms, with broken chains added to symbolize Austria's liberation. When the hammer and sickle were added in 1919, the government in charge of Austria was chancellor Karl Renner of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria, now the Social Democratic Party of Austria.
    In 1981, the Wappen der Republik Österreich described the blazon in Federal Constitutional Law. With this change of law, it was defined that the specific drawing is to codificate in an own statute law and that all other versions of the coat of arms of Austria were no longer in law. In accordance to this, the Wappengesetz from 1984 and the drawing of the actual Wappen der Republik Österreich is in Austrian law.

    It seems to me it's mostly about regulating the use of the flag for marketing. It's normal to see the civil flag on the packaging of a local product. Even if it's unlikely to be misused maliciously it makes sense for the to be rules about that. The law would be most directly relevant to graphic designers working for Austrian Brands. Don't wanna slip up and paste the wrong flag into your PS project, though it'd be easy to make the civil flag from scratch.

    To be fair to Monaco, the flag they've been using was officially adopted in 1881 by Prince Charles III, although red and white have been the heraldic colors of the House of Grimaldi since at least 1339. And the dimensions are different from Indonesia's in that Monaco's flag is a square. But yes, the lozenge flag is much cooler! The House of Grimaldi was founded in 1160 by Grimaldo Canella in Genoa and became the ruling house of Monaco when Francesco Grimaldi captured Monaco in 1297. A poetic interpretation may take from the flag according to the Monegasque government is that it is a representation of the blood of Saint Devota, 4th century martyr and the Principality’s patron saint.
    And the Lesotho flag is interesting! Blue represents the sky and rain, white represents peace as Lesotho has had the ideology of peace since King Moshoeshoe I, and green represents prosperity. The symbol in the middle is called a Mokorotlo which is a traditional Basotho straw hat. It has been said that the Sotho adopted this hat from the Cape Malays who wore a similar hat called the toedang. The Sotho display them in their homes to both uphold their customs and protect the home against danger and other evil influences.

      A common misconception. You are allowed to fly the flag any day you like, but you have to take it down for the night. And this is the big catch, as it really limits the number of civilians willing to fly the flag every day. Instead, civilians tend to use a household pennant that you can just fly for as long as you want. Yes, people would think you are weird for flying the flag every day, but it is by no means illegal. The law actually states that everyone is allowed to fly the national flag. Then there are official flag days when government offices are required to fly a flag, but for everyone else, it is a recommendation.

    Reminds me a bit of the US flag code. It's a set of rules that you're supposed to abide by when displaying the American flag. Things like the blue part with the stars goes on the flagpole, and you're not supposed to print the flag on clothing, and you actually are supposed to ceremonially burn a damaged flag to dispose of it. But none of these rules are actually laws; they're just guidelines and people violate them all the time! Especially the clothing one...

But since then the rules were relaxed and the civil red ensign is now mainly only used on Australian registered civilian ships. It's the difference between the "Federal Coat of Arms" and the "Federal Shield". Having the coat of arms on a German flag is condoned, as it's basically a different flag on it's own, however not an official one.

    In the German case, the Federal Service Flag show the "Bundesschild", a special version of the federal coat of arms reserved for this special use-case. If you put the regular federal coat of arms on a flag, it becomes the "Bundeswappenflagge" (federal coat of arms flag) which may be freely used by everyone.

    In Germany we have the state and civil flag like you showed, but theres an alternative unofficial flag that looks just like the state flag, but uses a different Coat of Arms on it. The Oficial state flag has a Coat of Arms with a round base and the eagle has more spread out wing feathers. The unoffical flag uses the oficial German Coat of Arms that has a pointy base and the wing feathers are straight down among other smaller things.

    • @clopec
      @clopec ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Finland is culturally much more strict when it comes to flags. I have never seen a physical state flag where it shouldn't be. And you can get a fine for flying the state flag in Finland too, the law doesn't even differentiate if the use of the flag can mislead anyone into thinking something is a government office, or if you are just waving it casually.

  • @matthewbrotman2907

    (2:15) I know I've commented on it before, but the usage of US icons for representing Austria is still weird. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is a song written by people from USA about their travel through Maryland. It's not connected to Austria as far as I can see.
    I just find it weird and odd, and I think something more Austrian could be used ... it could be a clever reference that only some gets, and some might also start associating it with Austria. I just think you could be more clever :)

    • @Tapakapa

    Here in Chile we have a similar system of law, the Civil and State flags are the same but the state flag has the coat of arms in the middle, here however I think is more popular that division, seeing that in protest and in the national day I only see our civil flag and the state flag is use just by the president, making it more a presidential flag than a state flag. Supposedly you can get fined if you fly the state flag but I can't remember the last time that happened
