I took my car to gearbox oils Ltd today . The place you recommended to get the parts from . They changed my pan filter and the sleeves and the life guard oil . Kit was 300 then another 210 for fitting guy did a great job and car is shifting very nicely .
defo need to see some more on the e70 i might learn something new ive got the e70 3.0sd twin turbo just done full engine change myself actually not bad at all pretty easy, dont forget the front differential oil just done mine as the seal started leaking after engine change
Cheers George, I’m having mine done next week on my 530d, she’s on 121k now and never been changed. Having same issues ie rough changes in 2nd/3rd hopefully all is well after the service. 👍
How was it after the service mate? Reason I ask is mine's on 132k with no history of being done, and I keep reading that if they're on over 100k and not been done it's best to just leave them alone as it can cause issues..!
Great job. Have you checked the transfer case actuator gears? Its a 10 gbp plastic gear, wears off fast. Easy to replace and remove a lot of lag/drag symptoms
Thanks George, informative as always. What about the reset or "recalibration" as some call it of the transfer case. Is this needed after the transfer case fluid has been carried out? I am about to do a fluid change of my e53 transfer case as it has the worn oil code, but told mixed things about the recalibration thing. Thanks. Should mention it has 180k miles on it.
I got mine. You have to go through the wheel well AND I had to undo the bolt that holds on a cable or tubing down underneath the car (I forgot which) and then use a bungie cord from the top to keep it pulled out of the way. Everything feels great now though. I did both my diffs and the transfer case. I still need to do my transmission.
Resseting adaptions for gearbox is risky cause if gearbox hasn't been serviced for ages it might work only on adaption and it might not adapt anymore so you can kill gearbox. Other thing transfer case you must reset otherwise you will start getting oil wear fault.
He did change the oil plus all the seals between mechatronic and the gearbox. It will significantly increase oil pressure to the clutch packets. So previous adaptation is not going to work properly in this case, as timings and corrections for each gear going to be different. I would recommend to reset the adaptation in this case.
Exactly what i was thinking, why reset adaptions. George could have make a note of the clutch fill times in ista before resetting adaptions. Then do the lenghty adaption teaching procedure, and check clutch fill times again. This way you can gain some insights about wear.
@@tautvydasmasianas5575 good point man! You made me dig into it and yeah some people ruined their gearboxes after adaptation reset. Luckily I never had problems after the reset. But from now on I am going to fallow your advice and leave the adaptation as it is 👍
@@bastaboom163 thats why people say if you change oil in bmw gearbox you will kill it. If its done properly it will run almost forever. Best way let gearbox do the job itself. George nice video btw - quick question - have you ever or anyone in this community come across the fuel gauge going down in miles and then going back up. I did think sender unit as i checked the fuel pump under diagnostics - would a blocked EGR or intake manifold cause what seems to be excessive fuel consumption or perhaps a blocked DPF -
The estimated range on the trip computer will go up or down according to your current average MPG. Anything blocked in the intake or exhaust will cause your engine to run less efficiently.

I hope these very useful videos are watched by more people. Cars are being held onto for much longer now, and higher mileages, so the high mileage service issues such as this video adresses will become more prevalent in the car population. You show that this work can be done as a DIY job with some simple, basic workshop tools, and the use of a flat hard standing. Spent hours under my cars as a lad, not BMW’s unfortunately, more like Cortinas, Maxis, Fiestas and the like😂😂😂
Would it not be a risk doing this on a 200k-er, say its never been changed. Could this not lead to a complete failure, ie best to not touch if its still working haha. I've heard of people changing trans fluid 1 ltr at a time over a longer period until its clean.
If these items are specified in the BMW service schedule they should be done at the specified intervals. The autobox (and other components) are often specified as being filled for life. What BMW mean by this is filled for the life of the warranty. No need to change the gearbox pan. Change the filter and the magnets. Use new gasket and bolts, tightening to the specified torque settings. ALWAYS remove the filler plug before removing the drain plug. Draining the oil before making sure you can remove the filler plug leaves you with dead car. This is the first thing you MUST do.
