  • ►BMW X5 front differential service is one of the lesser mentioned fluid services on the BMW X5 or X6 behind the rear differential service. While engine oil changes and transmission fluid changes are much more common, servicing your front differential is just as important and should not be overlooked. Failure to service your rear differential can result in catastrophic damage that will require a costly replacement.
    In this DIY, Gareth Foley, FCP Euro's BMW Catalog Manager demonstrates the step-by-step process of completing a BMW F15 X5 front differential fluid replacement.
    This DIY requires a fluid fill & extraction pump which you can find in the links below.

    Thanks again, as always Gareth. Great video for the F15! This is on my to do list, so I do really appreciate it. Just trying to get over the sticker shock for the $120/ Liter for a G5 fluid. Keep the F15 DIY video's coming!

    For the PHEV xDrive40e there is a slight variation to this procedure. When you go to access the fill plug from the underside there are two aluminum coolant pipes(that go to HV battery in the rear) that pass in that space, preventing you from getting any tools on the fill plug.
    To access the drain plug you need to remove the drive side wheel, and then loosen the splash shield just behind where the axle passes through. You can get to the fill plug from there using a 12" extension.

    If you are doing this at home, make sure you have a long 14 mm wrench. The factory really gets those plugs on tight. A short wrench may not give you enough torque to break them loose.

    I had my 2017 F15 X5 with 59k miles had its both diffs using Red Line 75w85 API GL5 gear oil and the transfer case using Red Line MT-LV 70w75 API GL4. All fluids were dark in color and the front differential fluid was the worst. After taking the X5 on a trip I noticed my gas mileage increasing slightly.

    Great video as always. You certainly save us a lot of money. What is the part number if you just want to buy the crush washer. Or do you need to buy the plug. Thanks.

      Hi Roy, thank you for wrenching with us! Unfortunately no part number provided as the rubber o-ring seal comes pre-installed on the plugs.

    Great video. As the video doesn't cover it, is there enough clearance to fit the torque wrench in that tight space to tighten the fill plug? Do we have to remove the splash shield?

    Great video as always guys... quick question. Would this be the same or very similar job on the E70 X5 ? like the rear diff is ?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The process will be very similar! The plugs will look a bit different and the locations of them may vary a bit, but the process itself is straight forward.

      @@fcpeuro ... thanks for your replay 👍🏼 just done this job on my 2009 E70 X5 Xdrive. Interestingly only 600 millilitres of the original front diff oil came out 🤔 seems a bit low as the rear diff had almost 1 litre (950 ml).

    Did y’all reuse the reinforcement plate bolts or use new ones?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tfunk, you always want to replace those as they are one-time use. We filmed multiple jobs with this X5, which required the plate to come off again, so we saved the new hardware for the final DIY.

    How much fluid was needed to refill?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Robert, the differential takes about 1L give or take, no more than that. We still had a bit left in the fill tool from the two 500ML bottles we poured in.

      You will want to use some degreaser and a power washer to try and get some of the residual oil off the underneath of the vehicle.

    About to take on this task on my F15 X5. I want to ensure clarity...this is NOT the QMV differential that comes with the adaptive suspension, is that correct? I'd swear I had adaptive suspension, but a vin decoder and my diff looking exactly like this video indicates that I do not.

    The 6 bolts that attach the reinforcement plate to the chassis are one time use bolts. You're not supposed to reuse them again.
    So what happened?

    • @CMC5961
      @CMC5961 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agreed that they should be replaced just like bolts for oil pan (touque + 90 deg, they were stretched) or transmission pan.
