Debbi here. I have my great grandmother’s oak claw foot table. It has witnessed 115+ years of my family’s joys and sorrows, teething marks, dings and scratches and we are still making memories as we eat our meals on it everyday. It is one of my most precious possessions. I LOVE your channel and your artistry, but I am really glad you chose not to repaint this lovely old lady.
Here here. If only this table could talk. I just love the play of light and dark in tiger oak. Katie, your time, efforts and patience restored this beauty so it could provide more years of function and enjoyment. On behalf of the table.....way to go!
This was unbelievable how you were able to see past the white latex to the beautiful wood underneath. What a stunning family heirloom this has turned into! Bravo!
Katie! I have had this exact table, with the leaves, sitting in my garage for at least 2 years. You have answered so many questions for me in this video. It turned out beautiful. I’m inspired 😊
@@salvagedbykscott I think this is the same as my grandmother’s table that I have in the back bedroom to work on soon. I’m out of town now so I can’t do a feature by feature comparison but as I remember it, it’s the same. Unfortunately mine is missing the leaf and the hardware is messed up, I’m hoping it’s just out of alignment but it was a two person job and the last time I messed with it my hubby was out of town. I’m hoping to work on it soon!
I'm so pleased you've sought to restore this piece as closely as possible to it's original. All the steps and considerations you've chosen and clarified in the process have been immensely useful in plans for work on my own pieces. Thank you!
Omg girl, for me, this is the best project by far. This table is stunning! I ❤️ American Empire, Duncan Phyfe and Hepplewhite era furniture. My grandmother had a huge (seated 12) table like this. I was 20 when she passed and have no idea where it is. I often think about that table and the holidays around it. This table brought all or that back for me, with a few tears. Thank you for restoring her. Someone is going to be very lucky!❤❤❤
I also have this table ( 10 ft length) and with its original 6 leaves in their dark stain (walnut). This is a family table going back to 1800s. I grew up with it in our kitchen. My daughter wanted me to get rid of it and no one else in my family wanted it, but I liked the design, so I have been inspired to do a mineral fusion wash to get rid of the orange color after stripping and sanding. I stripped and sanded one of the leaves, what I beautiful color.
The table looks lovely now that you've applied your tender, loving care and attention to it! So glad you didn't paint it, but left it as close to original as you could! You saved it's clean lines and simplicity!
Oh my goodness, you are a master at this stuff. I have my grandfathers oak table, which I painted the base, but restored the top. Was watching your steps very carefully. Well done, and a beautiful final product.
I love to see these historic pieces brought back to life. They were truly built to last as they took a lot of abuse unlike the disposable furniture built today. Great job, well done.
Great job! I think you might be off on the date. The original American Empire style was most popular in the 1820s, and would have been well on its way out by 1848. Almost all American Empire would have been done in dark stained (very thick) flame mahogany veneer, or less commonly, rosewood veneer, over pine. This table is most likely from the revival of the style, 1900-1915 or so and is probably made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The hardware, as well as the use of quarter sawn oak, points to this later date. Oak was not often used on high style pieces in the earlier period.
Agree . Living in the Midwest ( USA ) this table & ones w/ varying base styles are very common . Usually 48" round oak , but do to being over 100 yrs. old , often missing the leaf / leaves so folks will make replacements . I've worked in interior design & also house / pet sit for friends & we joke that every country house in Illinois & Indiana has these tables . 🙂
What a treasure! I actually have a table like this. Same hand crank, same thick base. My grandparents gave it to me in 1986. They bought it at an estate sale in the late 1950s. I do have the two extenders. My top is in need of a refresh. 32 years of family life has done a little damage.
Dear Katie, I love what you do. I have a solid walnut “window” pedestal table. I rescued it from my parent’s basement when I was still in my twenties, had it cut down, and turned into a coffee table. I will soon be 80 years old and still own it. I know that it is a little to large for my condo but would never part with it. Just worry about who might love it after me! Keep up your loving hard work.❤
I’m so thankful that you took the time and made the time to rescue and restore this beauty keeping her in the loop of life and history. If this table could only talk. The stories and memories that she could share. Your channel just crossed my path today. Will defiantly follow 😊
Wonderful job I think you could make some leaves to fit the table.... but keep them clearly new so that the story of this table contines to grow, especially now you've given it a new chance. Well done preserving history
WOW! That table came out beautiful, you would never know that it had been painted over multiple times. I have to say the apron looks good, too - it has it owns character! You do some amazing miracles with furniture!
I do think your care for this furniture brought great happiness (if possible, & I think it’s possible) to the Spirit of its original craftsman. What great grain!
Katie, you have outdone yourself here! It's so beautiful! That wood grain 🥰🥰🥰 Love the stain color and wipe on poly. It has such a warm rich look. Bravo on the repairs to the base! I think that was a great fix!
Oh my goodness!! You made her so beautiful again!! Thank you for RESTORING her, instead of just painting over her beauty. She is just lovely again, because of you! ♥️
I just discovered your channel. You totally answered my lead question! How crazy it escaped lead paint, thank goodness. I'm looking forward to binge watching your channel.🤩 Beautiful work!!
Katie, thank you so much for bringing back to life the original wood and staining, as opposed to painting. This is so beautiful. The tiger pattern is beautiful. I would love this table as a dining table perhaps with off white/white upholstered parsons chairs, or something. Beautiful job.
Give yourself a huge pat on the back! You did a fantastic job of bringing this 175 year old table back to life. As a lazy S.O.B. I really admire your hard work and stick-to-it-tive-ness, as well as your skill and good taste. Brava!

Just, wow! So glad you were able to save that table! And you worked hard to preserve its original essence. Sooo much better than throwing a coat of paint on it! Kudos to a fantastic job!
wonderful work on bringing this old beauty back to life Katie! Back in the day (60’s and 70’s I used to love feeling the accomplishment of taking something old and beaten up and bringing it back to life- it’s a wonderful feeling and makes one feel very proud! 👌😍
Absolutely gorgeous. I shudder when people paint over these pieces. I know sometimes pieces are damaged and you really have a choice. But with age of a piece like this scratches and dents are to be expected. Beautiful.
I followed a short of yours about restoring this table and am stunned by its beauty. It amazes me how someone can see through all that old paint to see what treasure is underneath, I know nothing about restoration, but I love seeing how it's done and the end result. In my very limited experience, nothing seems to go according to the original plan. So its great that you show that and your problem solving skills!
It’s probably because I’m partial to empire style furniture, but that has to be the most stunning transformation you’ve ever done. What a beautiful table!
How lovely Katie! You found and restored a gem. I think of all the generations of families who sat around this table and now it looks like it did so many years ago. Good job!

I have seen tables like this in my grandmother's sisters' homes. I am so glad you didn't paint it, it is beautiful in your dining room. I hope you keep it!
I love, love, love this tiger oak table!! I really enjoy your flips, especially when you can restore an old piece like this one to its former glory!!! 👑It reminds me of my great-grandparents' golden oak table that has been in our family since around the turn of the 20th century. My sister had it refinished, and it is gorgeous!! I don't know how the crown got in my post, but you are the queen of restoration, in my book!!
How pretty you made that table again ! And what memories of my grandmothers farmhouse kitchen that table brought back. In the early 1950’s, I would spend summers at my grandparents dairy farm in central WISCONSIN. Three times a day, grandma would set out massive meals. Depending on the time of day they consisted of thickly sliced homemade bread, with huge chunks of fresh butter, plates of sliced cheeses, boxes of cereals, and bowl after bowl of either scrambled eggs, fresh garden vegetables, delicious meat dishes, and plates of cookies/cakes that had been dessert after dinner the night before. In season a special treat was just picked raspberries and cream from grandmas cows. Everyone was welcome! The table was directly below the floor vent of the bedroom where my sister and I slept. So, after dishes had been done and it was time for bed, we’d quietly sneak out of bed and eavesdrop on the grownup conversations happening at that table below us. They were magical days of simple pleasures. Thanks for saving that special table.
Katie, I have to say you did a fantastic job!! 98% of people now all they can do is paint. It looks amazing. You could probably sell it for a ton if wanted to. Again Beautiful job. Mr. Kim
