Hidden $$$$? Salvaging a TRASHED Danish teak table

  • This thing had mildew all over it, a TON of scratches and dings, water rings from decades of glasses (and no coasters), and was nearly destroyed from a THICK gross layer of built up furniture waxes and polishes. Don’t use consumer spray polishes on your furniture! It’s a nightmare down the road when refinishing.
    This is a fairly typical but designer Danish teak dining table, a mix of solid wood and veneer, by CJ Rosengaarden. In excellent condition, this piece could be worth several hundred to a thousand Canadian dollars in my specific area to the right buyer. The veneers on these are pretty thin, so I only have so much room to work with. Is it perfect now? Absolutely not. But despite the flaws that remain, I think this table has a long life still ahead of it.

    The way I see it is... if you want it to look like a new table then go buy a new table. A restored table comes with character and blemishes, it has a history and nothing you do erases that. I happen to love furniture that is getting a second life, a new chapter, and kept out of a landfill. I think you did an excellent job.

    OMG, just in time!
    My husband picked out a nightstand for $20 at the Salvation Army for me to fix up for him. I thought it was a discount furniture store, manufactured material piece. Once we got it home I saw it was part of an Arne Wahl Iversen teak bedroom set for the Danish furniture makers, Vinde Mobelfabrik (she says like she knows what she's talking about) . Not worth very big bucks, but surely not deserving of all the glue and spray paint and crap I planned to do to it.
    It is no where near in as bad of shape as this, which is good because I am NOT anywhere near what anyone would call a refurbisher., but I'm now watching this for advice on how I should treat the wood to make it feel better.

    Lovely as always. ❤ I adore teak. I think it is my favorite wood.
    Ever seen teak trees? I’ve visited Costa Rica a number of times and they have many teak farms. They are amazing when they flower. Little pods that eventually burst open with fuzzy cotton-like seeds. From a distance, while in full bloom, the trees appear to be inside some sort of haze. Enchanting.

    • @TranscendFurnitureGallery
      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For cleaning- most people are overkill. I usually recommend a soft, lint free, slightly damp cloth. For things that need a bit more, a slight bit of a mild dish soap, wiped clean afterwards with the slightly damp cloth. Things like pledge are terrible for finishes, because of what they contain. And some commercial cleaners will eat through certain finishes and not others, so if someone is not 100 percent certain what their finish is, just a slightly damp cloth to remove the dust is fine. Something like a beeswax polish every so often is usually ok on most finishes, but again- if you’re unfamiliar with the finish, it’s best to avoid anything but dust removal.

    I just stumbled across your channel and you have brought so many memories back for me. I just turned 61, my Father passed in 2003, he always restored all our furniture. I have 4 dressers, a book/ library table and a porcelain enameled steel top dining table that slides revealing a leaf that extends it. I use it in my bedroom as a computer desk and work stand. The rest are in storage in need of love and restoration. I can not bear to throw them away. I have broken slides, dovetails that wobble,warped pieces. I only wish I had the knowledge to bring them back to life. I grew up with them and they are cherished. I spend time in the storage unit recalling years gone bye. Thank you for reminding me how things do not have to be thrown out and are loved.

    I appreciate every time you highlight the good characteristics of pressed wood in furniture.for the people who think only "solid wood" is worth anything. Stable substrate is such an important variable in furniture - you want your chair/wardrobe/dresser to not "breatle" with the weather changes xD

    You say finishing the underside only matters to you, but you are wrong. I love that you finish the underside of tables, and the backs of cabinets. Manufacturers who care should also do so. My parents bought a teak dining table back in the 70s, and Mum was always reminding us that teak is a soft wood and easily marked. We were VERY careful when using it for anything, and it looks almost as good today as when it arrived.

    Thank you for taking the time to show the photos of how thin the veneer is. It was super thin. Easy to see that this table has been used and abused, but as always you’ve done an amazing job to restore a table that will have many more shared meals and stories. ❤

    First of, the table looks gorgeous!
    Second, I LOVE that you refinish the underside and inside of the pieces you take. If I were to buy a refinished midcentury piece for my house I would get one completely done, the way you do it.
    I love seeing you apply the Odies' oil.

    Hey Angie: A few things. First, hilarious Clampett clip!! Most people probably won't get it! Second, what happened to the reveal music?? Third, hope you are doing well in Canada. As you may have heard, we are having some issues in the USA!!! Take care, and, as always, keep delivering the magic!

    I love the finished table and I don’t think I’m alone in thinking a few imperfections in something that has served families in the past, is just alright. Beautiful as always. Oh, and those chairs would have been perfect with this table!! Can’t wait to see what you have planned for them. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽

    Forever baffled by how you can see the true beauty of a piece when we see...trash basicaly 😅 In all honesty, if I lived there this table would go into my own dining room because it is just perfect! The lines, the colour, those rounded beautiful corners...It is just so elegant, I love it! You are a true craftswoman!

    Oh! Dear, do you realize the talent you have? You have the talent to be one of the best furniture/antiques restaurer in great museums. You are an Artist. I tought I was crazy when I finish all the hidden parts of all the projects I do! I'm so happy to see that I'm not alone... I myself restore antiques and I've learned so much from you since I follow you in secret! I'm a big fan :) As for the marks that grieves you; I overcame that "desease" by telling myself that they are scars just like ours; it's their story. I love the fact that you give a detailled list of all products used to acheive a reborn of hisory that will continu to collect good scars until you find it back in ten years on the curb! Thank YOU! Have you ever seen the TV show The Antique Road Show? It's an old TV show I used to watch on PBS. There's was an expert in antique furniture, that's when I change my vision of imperfections... they mean so much when you change the perpectives. 🧐

      @@TranscendFurnitureGallery I more than enjoy, I acquire knowledge and your videos remind me all the series of The Old Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram whom I learned so much. I have another "desease" that I can't get rid of an that is recycling almost everything that is worth saving... so I've been thinking about getting rid of some of my inventory for which I won't have the time to do. With three hernias in my spine due to osteoarthritis I have to reduce my work hours in half. Standing up after 4 hours is a killer to me. I have nice pieces. Nobody sees their value with my eyes but I suspect you would see the same.

    Great little joke about Clampett!
    I love teak. It is a beautiful wood. You really did a wonderful job restoring this table, as usual!
    Those cuts and marks and dings give the table character. I don't understand why people expect perfection from restored furniture. The signs of use give it a taste of continuity.

    I got teary when the underside of the table was being 'buttered' because it looked so beautiful. I told myself not to be ridiculous, but got teary again at the reveal. I love wood furniture and I love the fact Angie rejuvenates a battered piece of furniture into something that's lovely again.

    Such beautiful clean lines. The work you do is so valuable. Instructive and satisfying to watch, and mostly a pushback against the "use and discard" mentality. I live in a 150 year old home that was in rough shape when we moved in 40 years ago. It's full of salvaged furniture and second hand tools and items. I love your outlook and the incredible work you do to "save items from the trash." Many thanks Angie

    I love the highlights of lighter color in the wood grain! The nicks and scratch are so insignificant in comparison to the beauty of the wood that it's completely unimportant that they are there. Another beautiful job Angie. You are the complete wood whisperer ❤ Thank you for sharing. 🥰

    I don’t think perfection or excellence is defined by the last results of a work. But by the time you get to do everything clean, perfect and new. Is like the human beings, even after a surgery we still have a scar. As always you did amazing!!!

    A great save. Just had a month in Nova Scotia from the UK and as we were driving around everyone seemed to have put out their large items of trash for collection and there were some lovely bits of interesting furniture. It made me think of you. Loved the whole area - missing it madly now we're home.

    Another great save, Angie. That poor table looked a complete mess. Now it looks like one just wants to stroke it like a kitty cat. Can almost hear it purring.
    Agree completely about doing the underside. A piece just looks half-assed if the seldom seen parts are not treated as well. I understand your desire for perfection but these pieces have had decades of life and history so I am fine with seeing those traces continue. ❤❤❤

    Love the transformation. Most of those spots I didn't really see until you pointed them out. One thought, perhaps for a different episode, why isn't there a place/way to store that extra table leaf underneath? Just seems like a natural place to store it? You know what I mean?

    • @TranscendFurnitureGallery
      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Some tables have room underneath to store the leaves out of the way, and some tables have that storage built right in (butterfly leaf, for example). Sadly, there isn’t space between the mechanism rails for it. :-(
