@odochartaighofodonegal9815 hi, hope you're doing well.
My First Girlfriend was Jill an incredibly at the same time my older brother was dating her sister Brandy.
April Wine came to Calgary for the whole world's gone crazy tour.
Jerry Mercer was their uncle !.
The whole Band came over to their house for dinner .
      I'll never forget it !.
Jill and I were little kids , and when everyone left to go to the show Brandi and my brother had to stay and babysit us.
Well, we were about 11:12 years old at the time.
Can't forget Jill's mom making a great dinner for her brothers arrival to Calgary. We lived a couple doors down on a army base and not long after her dad got posted somewhere else somewhere else.
My first concert my brother took me to see April Wine nature of the Beast !
      It was pretty incredible

Oowatanite-April Wine--Total Golden treasure!!! It was difficult to turn on a radio in Canada in the 1970s or early '80s without hearing April Wine. The Halifax-spawned, Montreal-based band made radio-friendly arena rock and sentimental ballads that earned them a mass audience. They had five platinum or multi-platinum albums in Canada, 21 Top 40 singles, and received ten Juno nominations, including seven for group of the year 1975-83. April Wine made their U.S. debut in 1972 with the hard-driving "You Could Have Been A Lady," a Top 40 hit which shot up to #2 on the Canadian charts and became among the band's best known songs worldwide. The band had two other Top 40 hits in the U.S. with "Roller" (1979) and "Just Between You And Me" (1981). Just if your at all curious!! Cheers guys!!

I saw April Wine at the 5th Golden Summernight concert in Mannheim Germany in 1982. A concert with several bands including Jethro Tull and Neil Young. On April Wine's second song an Oompah band came down the river on a barge , anchored and played for a while. April Wine yielded the stage. When they came back, their drummer played a 15 minute solo that knocked my socks off.

April Wine is the Canadian band with more than 20 albums since 1971. I always felt here in America April Wine didn't get the recognition they deserved. A few other songs by them worth a listen are, JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME, SIGN OF THE GYPSY QUEEN, ROLLER and my favorite YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY from 1972. Another Canadian band known for bangers are BTO, BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE.

Red Rider's "White Hot" is a great song from this era. Tom Cochrane is the lead singer. Big in Canada in the 80s. Cochrane's solo hit was "Life is a highway".

I bought this album on vinyl in 1982, a year after the album came-out, after hearing the amazing power ballad "Just Between You And Me" on Rock radio several times. I was so glad I did. Even though the first couple of songs on it aren't that great, then we get "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen," "Just Between You And Me," "Crash And Burn" (which I see you guys have already reviewed - yay!!), and it just goes on and on from there. _The Nature Of The Beast_ is actually the heaviest album April Wine ever did in the 70s and 80s, it is their most popular, and it's their best. It's an all-around winner.
You DEFINITELY need to react to "Just Between You And Me," "Caught In The Crossfire," "Big City Girls," "Bad Boys" and "One More Time"...ALL of them on this great album. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
By the way, the drummer, Jerry Mercer, an absolute big 🐻 of a man, was an absolute beast on drums, as evidenced on "Roller" and this and all the other songs I mentioned above, plus many others. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻

The great John Kay's Steppenwolf iconic Canadian band from the 60's through present. John Kay is an amazing vocalist, blues guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter. You have all probably heard "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride", but "The Pusher"(Hoyt Axton) and "Hoochie Coochie Man"(Wiilie Dixon) are great blues tunes that are my favorites.

I know this was a year ago but I gotta answer the 2 big questions posed.......
2 words boys.....Pedal Effects. The guitar is plugged thru a series of pedals that when activated would change the sound of the guitar, distortion/fuzz tone, wa wa, phaser, jet phase, chorus, delay etc etc etc there are MANY. Today with micro processors their usually done thru a single board.
Yeah they we're huge in Canada, in New England when this album came out "Just Between You and Me" was almost EVERY couple's song. This whole album is great and the only album of theirs to make a dent in the US, still to this day I still can't understand why. Triumph is another Canadian band that kills it and has many albums but only made a real effect here in the US with one album, it's such a head scratcher.
    Peace

Thanks so much for the detailed answer regarding the guitars because I also wanted to know. I’ve heard some of those terms and your explanation put them into context for me. Also, your enthusiasm for the band is appreciated as April Wine was a huge part of the soundtrack of my youth and I’ve always been a fan. They had a prolific output of such great music. RIP Myles.

For that era's sound, a compression pedal, crunch, delay, reverb and doubler, typically pushed by a Strat on front pickup, with a switch to mid and back for the more "mellow" interludes. At least that how I approached it. ;-)

The clear sound effect on the guitar arpeggios is a chrorus pedal , when comes the chorus it's a distortion pedal

Ok, guys, April Wine's good rockers are - Roller, Oowatanite, Say Hello, I Like To Rock, Raise A Little Hell and You Could Have Been A Lady. A more mellow but good one that you could listen to with your girlfriend would be Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love, which even though it's more mellow, is still catchy. Every one of these songs is a must if you want to hear more of this band! Hope this helps. Looking forward to more reactions to this good Canadian band. Cheers from Ontario!

In Canada the radio was mandated to play a certain percentage of Canadian (bands) content, hence why we up here in the great north know most of these bands. It was also very hard (for some reason) for a Canadian band to break into the US market back in the 70's and 80's, and probably right up until today. Historically, very few Canadians bands have cracked the US market.

I know I'm late to the party here. A lot of bands in the 80's were popular in certain regions of the US. April Wine was very popular in the Midwest. They are still played on Classic Rock stations in Wisconsin. That Nature of the Beast album doesn't have a bad song on it. April Wine was actually on the Monsters of rock tour back in 1980 with Rainbow, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Saxon.

April Wine's greatest hits album is can't miss. Boys, check out the tracks on it and choose anything. Also, I Like To Rock, which has a cool shout out to a Stones hit and a Beatles hit overlapped. Also Say Hello and Enough is Enough. They are a straight on rock/rock-pop band. Very underrated group out of Montreal. Myles Goodwin is a really good vocalist and guitarist.

Three different guitarists, playing different guitars. And yes, they will all sound different as they have different pickups and one neck may be longer than the other. This gives them the ability to play different and it all sound different and you can pick out when the guitarist changes. Check out "I like to rock." It too will make your playlist. Along with "before the dawn."

Different effects, different amps, mic placement, room size, etc... Every thing was done with amps (pretty much) guitars, effects.. There were no amp and cabinet simulators, pro tools... EVery thing was recorded on 2" tape. If you F'd up you had to "punch it in" or do it again LOL No "cut and paste".

Been going deep cutting AW and found a few more heavier rockers in "So Bad", blistering guitars in the Frank Marino vein, "Before The Dawn" which is somewhat Proggy too, "Wench" from the debut album, for the first almost 3 Minutes just a "small r" rock song, then we get the first outbreak of the Triple Rack Guitar Attack and the destruction it can leave, "Crash And Burn" has a taste of Thrash Rock to it, damn fine splendid it is, "Electric Jewels" Mellow early, Rocker middle, Prog finisher, "Hot On The Wheels Of Love" Steve Lang's Bass just ripping it up, along with the triplets. There you go, that should keep you busy.

back in the day a lot of bands used a mixture of fender and gibson to make a certain sound ...fenders usually are crisp gibsons tended to be more airy

Came across this today and just subscribed. I hope you go through the April Wine catalog. It's deep deep deep. rock and roll from the maritimes of Canada in the early 1970s. These guys were huge on the radio back in the day

they were signed to a canadian label and had licensing issues in america which held them back from touring and getting airplay on a large scale-otherwise would ve been much bigger. in canada they toured for decades and still play(ed) festivals and casinos i saw them 5 or 6 yrs ago and they were great

Tubed amps. Les Paul vrs Strat on stage. Electric guitars have pickups which can alter sound through manipulation. Strings can be wound differently. BM from Queen plays with a coin or metal pick to get his sound. Tom Schultz from Boston graduated MIT and designed my fav The Rockman and numerous “effects pedals” to achieve diff sounds. Jimmy Page used a bow and fereman?

April Wine played at my junior high in Halifax when I was 12/13 years old. Maybe 1969.

You need to know about CanCon, which stands for Canadian Content. In Canada there's rules for radio stations where 35% of songs played must be of Canadian origin. This was to prevent US music from dominating the airwaves and suffocating the smaller Canadian recording industry. Ultimately, there has been songs (and bands) getting airplay in Canada that couldn't really compete in the US market. This means bands like April Wine, Triumph and others, while having a few good tracks, had many more get saturation airplay in Canada as a means of satisfying the CanCon rules. People up here have heard these songs on rock radio for 30-40 years and have an affinity due to familiarity, not necessarily due to quality.

If you go through their library you will notice that even if a Rock Band at heart they are also very versatile.

It's a very Blue Oyster Cult-ish sound. Very "don't fear the reaper". If I had to guess, I'd say the effect is not the guitar, but a chorus pedal with some echo/reverb.
