  • Test of transmitted audio from Yaesu FT-450D (as received on an FT-950) in DX conditions -- a comparison between the MD100a8x, at various settings, vs. Stock MH-31a (FF to 4:13) that came with the radio. The two ops are DV3XUK in Angeles City, Philippines, and HL1ZIX in Seoul, Korea. Distance is about 1600 miles (2573km), or equal to about half the distance across the USA. DV3XUK has a 2-element homebrew 15m yagi, and HL1ZIX is running a 1/4 wave 40m vertical on 15m (5 stories up, on the roof). HL1ZIX is receiving the audio on his FT-950, and the sound is recorded on an LG cell phone, as heard from the external speaker of the FT-950. Apologies, I forgot to ask for the MH-31a switch setting on the back to be changed, as a part of the test.

    Quite a difference between the handheld mic and the MD100. Thanks for sharing.

    Wow .. the MD100 cuts through much better than the MH-31. I had read that the MH-31 (which I have) had a muddy sound, and this confirms it. Thanks for this very well done and informative video!

      HammerToneAmps Try these settings. They seem to work well for all Yaesu radios with the MH31B hand mic:

      Thanks. I sold my FT-950 earlier this past year, and also bought an FT-891. I'd like to buy one of these MD100 mics, myself!

    HL1ZIX de DV3XUK. the switch setting at the back of the MH-31B is set 1. Sorry I also forgot to change the switch setting during the testing. 73!

      Hey, glad you found the video! I thought I had your email on QRZ, but didn't see it, so I could not contact you. I think I preferred the very first settings you had, at the beginning of the video for general speaking. It was the first we heard from you, before changing settings. For long DX the mid emphasis with high emphasis was also nice. 73's, and thanks!!

      I use the basic hand mic on my FTDX3000 most often.

    While this video was done well and I will take nothing away from that. There are a few things to note. There are different EQ settings for the standard microphone. The ones the transmit operator was using are the ones were the microphone sounds the worst in my opinion. I have played around with the mic for quite some time and have found that if you set the tone on the back of the microphone to position number 2 and the EQ to 4 and set your mic gain to normal it has a very good quality sound. I won't say that the desk mic doesn't sound better, as it should, it is over three times the price. But the standard microphone can sound much better than was Illustrated with this video by using the correct settings. 73 s. Thanks for the video presentation.

    I have to add that I have found some great settings for the MH-31 mics that come with Yaesu radios that have a Parametric EQ (FT-891, FTDX3000, etc): thestingyham.blogspot.com/2017/10/yaesu-ft-891-mic-settings.html
    Sample file is near the end.

    Question, was the operator using the MD100a8x running an amplifier ?

    • @thestingyham1188
      @thestingyham1188  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mykenwood830 I think you mean HF power amp? I am pretty sure he was not, if I remember correctly. If you meant on the mic, the mic does have an internal amp, which he tried both on and off, for comparison.

      I meant if he was running an HF amplifier. TY. I am seriously thinking of buying that mic for my 450D.

    that's not a FT-450D

      Carlos Baquero Transmit is a 450D. Listening on an FT950. The point of the exercise is to hear what the mic sounds like to others. The FT950 has far superior receive bandwidth, and sound, and is a good radio to hear what the FT450D with MD100 is capable of. But what is important is for listeners to know what the mic sounds like over the air, using a 450D on transmit. This video shows that.

      데릭피코너 agree with you, i just got confused with the rig because I was looking for videos with FT-450D. No problem my friend.
