10m Worldwide DX Contest SSB Asia Signals
มุมมอง 3712 ปีที่แล้ว
Just a trip down the dial from HL1ZIX on 10m during the 2022 contest. Before this, I had a about 20 contacts from Israel to Brunei over the course of 30 minutes. Antenna is a homebrew V-dipole at about 52 feet, facing broadside East/West. Many of these signals are to the South, so not as strong as they could be.
What is this Data Mode?

Heard this on 20m today. Any idea what it is? Bursts are short. It’s about 600 wide on the waterfall. Sometimes it goes for a few seconds. It resembles Contestia or Olivia.

Audio Test as follows. Receiver was a KiwiSDR receiver on the 15m band, located at BM2KVV in Taiwan (about 1,550 miles away), set to RX at a bandwidth of 2600Hz, giving it a little extra than my radio could generate. I was transmitting from HL1ZIX in Seoul at the stock bandwidths available on the TS-480SAT, which included 2400 and 2000Hz. Antenna was a 2-el homebrew 20m yagi at about 60 to 70 f...

Shocked to hear Andy UT0IC on the air, today during the war with Russia. Contact was on 21205, but my software wasn't running CAT, so I had to enter the frequency manually (it was showing the wrong frequency on LOG4OM, at the time). Obviously his English is mostly limited to making a contact and exchanging signal strength, but that's OK. Nice he came back to me. Made contact on 15m at 200w and ...

A test of the Behringer SB78a condenser microphone. This has become my go-to Zoom microphone, and seems to work best if I add two pop filters to it to remove some of the sharpness (that way I do not need to De-Ess). I record this mic with no processing, no compression, no limiting, or anything outside of Zoom for this test. I'm running the mic through a Behringer UMC202HD audio interface. I per...
Self-service Ice Cream Shops Opening in Korea

Self-service ice cream shops and toy/stationery stores are opening all over Korea. In a recent article, the negative workforce impact of the minimum wage hike was discussed here: www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200623000842 I should note that my South African coworkers think these stores are hilarious. Such a store could never survive in South Africa. It would be completely emptied within min...

A very quick and dirty review of the cheap RZ Rizum Z9000 USB Gaming Headset. No one else has a review up ACTUALLY USING this one, so I thought I should share my limited experience with it. I wanted to add that I don't use this headset for anything, other than a back-up. I'm not happy with the mic quality. Also, you'll notice that the top of the headset has a metal halo, which is just far enoug...

Wow! Now just need to find a 10m-40m antenna that will be better than my EFHW for receive that I can hide from my HOA and I will be SET!
Not surprised the Yagi has noticeable gain over the dipole but a bit surprised at the noise on the dipole. I wonder how the noise varied as you rotated the dipole and Yagi? The dipole would pick up signals and noise off both sides while the Yagi does not. I suspect there is one direction where the noise would be worse on the Yagi ( due to its gain.) However it could be the location of the dipole (nearer to a noise source) or the feedline routing. The dipole should have nulls off the ends whereas the Yagi has both front to back and usually nulls off the back quarters or the sides, depending on exact design.
That antenna does not need a balum, it goes directly to 50 homs
In a perfect world. But the world around you is not perfect. Simple deviations in the topography and buildings around you will affect the antenna. Better to have a balun to prevent unwanted imbalance and the feedline from radiating.

isn't it highly illegal to operate a radio in NK? Like...so illegal they will erase your genealogical tree from the genepool and history ?
supposedly this guy had permission but there were many people contesting whether or not he was actually there. if you search the call sign you can probably find all about the story.

I use that RX port for a receive LoG, Loop on Ground. Similar to a beverage on ground but more omnidirectional. Works great.
The cars fit the look of the city. We had some of those models of Hyundai and Kia back then. It’s not that the cars were “ugly” as they say. It’s that they resemble the look of the city… the cultural “vibe” is translated into the automotive design.

what are the coax 1 and 2 and coax direct 1 and 2 for
Direct just means avoid all tuning, like a cable straight through. Coax 1 and 2 are with the tuning dials affecting the signal.
Thanks for making and posting this video. I recently acquired one of these units, and had trouble locating any documentation. Thankfully, a fellow ham responded to my search and gave me a link to the user manual: elektrotanya.com/mfj-962_VERSA_TUNER_III.pdf/download.html#dl Another commenter already shared that link. 73 de KB3ZIM
Beautiful natur and rig. 73
Are you the chap who left an eBook of a review of the FT891 on Amazon? If so well done and thanks. I had a thorough read. I’m considering buying one to use in Japan as it’s near impossible to use imported equipment legally over here. The registration process requires the certification of each individual radio by the operator. Spurious spectrum screenshots etc. I was reading the comments below here and was saddened to see that Korea is restricting its licensing for ‘imported operators’. I just got licensed locally and here I was moaning about not being able to get a call sign until I register an approved rig that gets tied to either my mobile or home station permit. Hence my research into the FT-891. Are you still active and in this neck of the woods? John, 73
Hi, yes I am around. I don't get on air as much, and no longer do portable due to time and being generally lazy (no portable rig, at the moment). Yes, the rules in Korea are a disappointment. It makes it very difficult to get any form of expat community going in ham radio because people only get about 3 months. As a long time off, it seems my license was grandfathered and I was given 5 years, which will need to be renewed again soon. That and the general transient nature of foreigners coming and going naturally is sad. I know that in Japan there is a 50 watt license and they sell radios specifically for that. You probably know this but those radios have the designation M in their model number. We also have antenna and station inspections but they're really more of a $30 payment for the person who comes out to do it from the government, and a formality based on past issues where people home brewed a lot of equipment or bought amps that were way out of spec. I was one of the first owners of the ft-891 and did leave a long review. I liked that radio in general, but changed to another radio just to try something new, and actually miss it for its features and the price, as well as the size.
Hi. So the antenna wire is soldered or connected into one big circle. And then how do you connect the ladderline to the antenna? Do you just solder or connect it anyway so there is a metal connection from each side of the ladderline to a spot on the antenna?
Hi, happened to be online now. The wire is one big circle. One end of the wire is connected to one lead on the ladder line. That same long wire just makes a circle all around and connects to the other ladder line lead after it completes the circle to the other side.
Nice. I understand you are saying that each ladderline lead is separately connected to both ends of the antennae tp form a circle. (And that the antennae wire itself does not need to be soldered together in addition to having its two end points connected to the ladder line, right? Also, are you able to transmit as well as receive on this antennae? Thanks@@thestingyham1188
Hi Darek, to generate a better antenna import the measurements or build directly on MMANA GAL 😉 73 de is0hmz Luca
Your vertical has a commonmode problem..
That was already tested. Not sure if I mentioned it in the video because it was a long time ago, but I ran an MFJ isolator to choke that line on the vertical. Adding the choke lowered the noise level perhaps half of an s unit, but honestly I really couldn't tell much difference. Just a guess, really. The 20m yagi had its own Balundesigns 1:1 current balun.
The lineisolator might not solve the whole issue about CM but if it reduced the qrm you had some of it removed. I had an old FT-107 with the extra antenna port and i used to counterphase the antenna signat into that, from an external antenna too... it sometimes reduced qrm about 30 db or more. BTW your noiselevel is a bit less than mine, and i live en a small village... i wpould have expected a lot more from a big city like yours 🙂
Hello great video. Can you use a 2 elwm yagi on 40m as a receive antenna and use a half wave dipole as a main transmitting antenna?
Yes you can! I do, sometimes. Results vary. Needs some receive amplification, though.
Thank you! The SB78a is very good sounding with the foam :) May I ask you, what diameter / thikness the foam has ? (or modell)
The inner foam is just a very cheap and thin standard sized foam costing maybe $1. The larger foam over that cost about $6 shipped from AliExpress , and is the size sold to fit an Audio-Technica at2035 condenser mic.
@@thestingyham1188 Thanks a lot!
How long is the antenna? I am trying to relearn Morse code after 40 years! I guess you might say that I have been away from radio for a while.
You can make different lengths, but if you have space a 34'x34' is a good length of you have a tuner, and there is gain on 15m with lobes at an angle towards the ends. Also here is a shorter vertical with ladder line you can make: www.dj0ip.de/my-favorite-antennas/all-bands-vertical/
Great video! de W2CSI

My 3 elemrnt yagi is sometimes noisier than my vertical. As far as recieve and transmit it depends on propagation. I flip back and forth to determine which is right for the contact.
I am putting up a similar antenna this week.Hope I can work some JAs on 40 too!
Hi, thanks for the video..do you have the link for dowloading software from ftdx 3000 to a computer ? thanks by advance, great job ! :)

Hey, greetings from the UK! Great video, very useful not only to KX2 owners as some of the concepts are cross brands and models. It shows the real meaning of working a week station. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Derek, thanks for the video! do you have the free link to control the ftdx 3000 with a computer ? thank you by advance.73 ! :)
Some of the changes on the firmware have given the PFn 3 buttons. Nice.
Calum did a video about a wire loop laying on the ground as a good low noise receive antenna. Looking forward to trying it this year.
맥도날드 케이에프씨는 그대로네요
To get over the dangling-feeder and interaction problem, I put a sleeve current-choke 1/4 wave down the coax; the (outer surface if the outer conductor of the) coax above the choke forms the lower half of the dipole. It's all vertical, using the deliberate co-ax radiation technique 😀
Interaction with the coax is overrated, imho. But antenna theory and experiments are fun. The benefit would be more related to adding strength to the construction, and longevity to the coax. Good idea for a permanent install, though.
So thanks for that you took the cherish video taken in 2002. It is so good and cherish a material that we can learn the history and the culture of Korea in 2002.
Thank you for the hints very useful 😊

I’ve also experienced this at my home. My endfed random wire (non-resonant antenna) often receives better than my other antennas.
This was very helpful for me. Thank you for making this video!
I much enjoyed this. I'm a new US ham living in Japan doing what I can to set up a station from scratch. Hope to be on the air as soon as my IARP license comes through. I'm new to amateur radio and wonder if there's an English-speaking group or community I can join in the Seoul area.
There was a Facebook group for Korea ham radio in English. Also if you contact HL1FB, or read the KARL website in English, there is a repeater for English (if it is still running). Sadly there are not many of us left in Seoul because the Korean government changed the licensing rules for foreigners limiting them to a 3-month license. A few of us long-timers were grandfathered in with the longer licenses, but there are only a few of us in the whole country left.
And my contact info is on QRZ.com. Do you know that site? You should make an ID and page there. What is your callsign?
@@thestingyham1188Just read through KARL & QRZ. Lots of info there. Thank you~
This was a very helpful video! Fantastic!
On your YAGI, have you chosen a reflector or a director
Honestly cannot remember which. I have tried both.
Is this phasing the antennas to reduce noise like a QRM eliminator.
No, it is simply listening on an antenna not meant for the band. Less noise while remaining signal is lesser than a resonant antenna, but stronger above the noise floor. You then use your internal RX amp to raise the signal.
