You’ve just answered all my questions on the 450. I’m a bit of an audio nut and used to use an EQ (W2IHY). I’d like to run the HC5 insert with the rich base boost. Thanks buddy. G7EIT.

Want to Love your FT-450 RX ? Try this : Run the RX with Contour and the Notch OFF.. and the DSP OFF or set to 3 , Noise Blanker Off (unless needed,, then use it before DSP).. and Shift centered or for best quality ( to compensate for filter mis-alignment). Set Bandwitch ( dsp setting) to Widest . This will give you excellent RX quality for SSB and AM... for AM going to mid selectivity will give S/N improvement on weak ones or with QRM.. On very strong signals (S 9+20 and above) ... use RF attenuator if signal distorts. On 6m ssb.. weak signals are often heard better with DSP OFF ... this is a critical adjustment.. but you wont miss weak ones on ssb with the DSP off. but you can with it on. The contour and notch are very difficult to use for SSB... not reccommended... too slow to adjust in changing conditions with weak signals, and too wonky sounding.. so what are they good for ? Without separate contols.. not much. I dont work combat DX.. so there is that. I don't work CW.. but suspect they might be good there for weak signal in dx enviornment. Very good RX in low noise environment.. "entry level" or not.

As a newcomer to amateur radio and the ft-450(d), I found this most interesting. Videos like this help to demystify what seems at fist to be a complex and intimidating piece of equipment. Thanks & 73, Chris M6VCJ

Thanks Chris. Radios and manuals can be intimidating. If I want some info I usually try You Tube first, it's so much easier to watch someone going through a process than reading about it.

I've had this FT-450 two times in my shack, and I am seriously concidering buying a second hand Version of it again. I found one on a sales page in Norway. - Tnx for the great video VK6CS - very informative. 73's!

Thanks for the feedback. I have recently been playing around on HF with this radio and my old FLdx2000 amplifier and have received quite a few unsolicited compliments on the audio quality. One of the guys at the club recently told me it was the best audio quality he had ever heard on HF. I wouldn't part with my 450.

Sry for the bump, thanks for the feature, I have a later FT-450D with the white backlit buttons and it has the same feature. Thanks 73

I set it to TX Tune. ( might he a different label as I don't have the radio in front of me ) this way I can send a 10 watt CW carrier to check SWR.
But yeah this is how you check your audio. ( Best way is through head phones. ) then switch it back to TX Tune once you got it.
Main thing I don't like about the FT-450 is no Auto Notch! By the time you get Manual Notch set usually the interference is gone! For the price its not bad but a few more hundred bucks and you can get a much better radio.

I have 3 friends with FT-450's also, none of us knew this, and had to do on the air checks to set EQ.

I seem to get my best audio reports when the back of the mic is on tone 2 and my mic EQ is on 4 with my mic gain on normal. Also get similar results on zero which is flat and 9.

The difference is more noticeable when you're actually in front of the radio. It is worth the trouble to set the response you like the best. I can't remember what the default setting was.

I've recently bought one of these, but I find the RX audio terrible & muddy; the only way I've found to improve it is to turn the contour fully down to the left.
Out of the numerous rigs I own, the FT-450D is hands down the worst for receive audio.
Has anybody else noticed the same poor audio?
