  • FINNAIR's Survival Story: Stockholm - Helsinki - London, Economy Class
    Finnair is the flag carrier and largest full-service legacy airline of Finland, with headquarters in Vantaa on the grounds of Helsinki Airport, its hub. Finnair and its subsidiaries dominate both domestic and international air travel in Finland. Its major shareholder is the government of Finland, which owns 55.9% of its shares. Finnair is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance.
    Finnair is the sixth oldest airline in continuous operation and is consistently listed as one of the safest in the world.
    In this episode, we explore the airline's struggle and overcoming adversity in today's challenging geopolitical climate. A lot of the turbulence this airlines faces aren't of their own doing so we take this flight review into the underbelly of Finnair's operations to see what they're doing in the face of stormy skies.

    Finnair was the first to fly non-stop from Europe to Japan. The flight was on 14 hour polar route, both directions. It was flown with DC-10-30ER, then with MD-11, and now with A350.
    At that time, all other airlines flew with a fueling stop in Anchorage, or in Bangkok.
    Finnair did make full procedures to fly over North Pole, methods that no other airline have learnt to do. That polar route is again in active use with Finnair HEL-/Korea-Japan-flights, due to the soviet overflight bans. Depending on the winds, Finnar does fly also these same non-stop flights south of the soviet union, both directions, which ever has more favorable winds.
    Of all of tens of thousands of polar flights, only twice have they made an fuel stop due to winds being a bit wrong way. Now recently the polar route to A359 TYO did make a fast redirect visit Anchorage, due to a medical need.

      @@PekPiu thanks for this insight. I've been fascinated by these North Asia-Europe flight ever since I flipped open the JAL inflight magazine in 1987. Back then these flight maps showed lines drawn between destinations, and I noticed all of their Northern European flights went via Anchorage. And their Southern European ones to ROM ATH went via a comprehensive milk run via BKK KHI DEL DHA CAI etc...

    Really good and factual report on AY so thanks Ryan. BA has also leased some A320s to cope with seasonal demand.
    As for Europe-NE Asia routings the airlines almost always fly there by the Southern route (as noted) but they almost always return via the Pole. Much depends on wind speeds and so on.
    Routings can be spotted using these flight routing sites.
    Indeed Flightradar24 took AY HEL-HND and that info was shown and explained.
    It could be years before AY regains access to Russian airspace. Much depends on who is in charge of Russia when the current conflict ends. Russia is furious that these Nordic and Scandinavian nations have joined NATO.

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@alexmcwhirter6611 I've always looked at this conflict from both sides. Russia has always reached out towards EU. But with the west, unless you agree with them, you're against them. There's no room for ideologies outside the western narrative. And with nations at the Russian border joining NATO and pointing their arms towards Russia, can you blame Putin, really?
      The Ukraine invasion is another topic altogether which is pretty exhausting. Who is right and wrong? The lines are so blurred. The more I try to understand it, the more questions I have.

    I will be taking AY to Asia later this year, particularly good evening connections so I am able to not take the last day off work and just head off as the weekend rings! Ironically despite having been in Scandinavia for very long, I haven't ever flown SAS. They are from ARN also not as well connected on long haul anymore.
    Good to know about possible issues with the check in. As far I saw online, Finnair offer bag drop in ARN and that would bypass check in agents.
    Have flown often from ARN T2 and during peak times, specially noting the chaotic 2022, it was an advantage. That summer the T5 facilities were overwhelmed and even before summer I almost missed a flight due to a very long queue to security. Indeed a tiny terminal, but that can be better.

    Hi Ryan. That ground handler seems to handle AY, IB & BA at Arlanda in the same check in area. I had a bad experience with them too flying BA from ARN--LHR--GLA back in March. I used the priority line, which took too long, and my flight was delayed too. Agent told me I'd been automatically rebooked on the next connecting LHR-GLA flight. Lies. Later, I had to make a call to BA to make the change myself. These 3rd party agents can be the worst. In my case, she either told me what I wanted to hear to get me out of her face or was simply incompetent. Anyway, nice report. I've only flown AY once before on a FCO - LHR flight they were operating for BA (same as the arrangement with QF). I'm looking forward to trying AY for real next year OSL-HEL-BKK return in business class - that new seat looks great! Oh, will you be posting more from your time in Scotland?

    • @ryansofly
      @ryansofly  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You're right, they were also checking in for BA and IB at the same time. Absolutely overwhelmed they were! For AY, they only had ONE agent handling BOTH regular and priority. So you can imagine why our line just did not move at all.

    Imagine the financial fate of two Nordic aviation giants: Finnair and SAS, both of which could not be any different.
    Based on my research of fares, Finnair has been unapologetically the most expensive to fly to Helsinki from London. It does have a somewhat premium (though not luxurious) feel to it though.
    But on that point of closed Russian airspace, which both Finnair and SAS have suffered, it provides a payday for mainland China-based carriers because they are the only ones that could use Russian airspace.

    • @ryansofly

      The difference is night and day. I'm sure AY's relations with their workers are also in better shape compared to SK. Also SK's 3-hub ops versus AY's single efficient hub, the winner is clear to see.
      AY's fare ARN-LHR was actually the lowest for this part of my trip. Suppose it depends where you're flying AY from. Several other viewers have also pointed out their high fares .

    Finnair is good with delayed flights arriving to HEL. I have on two separate occasions seen them delay the last departures of the day to accommodate people arriving late. The time I was myself on delayed flight myself they had everyone sorted out approximately 30 minutes before landing and gave out instructions to transfer passengers - some would have have their next flights waiting for them, some would simply have expedited Schengen immigration to make their flight, some would be accommodated at airport hotels and leave with first flights the next morning. The other time we just waited until a dozen Swedish football fans made it to our plane from a delayed flight from Lund. They sang their football chants all the way to TLL. The longest 20 minutes of my life. :)
