  • This is a super easy tutorial for a super easy job!
    The Toyota 1ZZ engine can be found in the Corolla, Celica, Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, RAV4 and also I think the Lotus Elise?? Hmmm... Anyways, this is on a 2001 Corolla.

    Hey Faye, you didn’t mention needing to remove the 3 bolts from the PS engine mount and jacking the engine up a bit to get clearance enough to remove the lower bolt from the tensioner. Do you have a workaround for that or do you also usually get that mount loose too?

    Hi Faye, I have a 2000 GTS Celica, I replaced the serpentine belt alone (it's squeaking) and it's still squeaking! I'm going to do the pulley assembly like in the video. Just wondering if that's what the problem was on this car. Thanks!

    • @FayeHadley
      @FayeHadley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh when the tensioner starts to go it can absolutely squeak!! But do can any of the driven components as well!! Listen with a mechanics stethoscope to reach individual pulley

    To answer your description question; The Lotus Elise had the 2ZZ, the MR2 Spyder (MR-S) has the 1ZZ. This particular problem is covered in TSB EG014-01.

    New here. Just found out the tensioner on my 06 Vibe is toast & was looking for a how to vid. Nice job doing this in 4 1/2 mins. Other vids dragged on on on... Looking forward to more

    Did you have to jack the engine up at all to get that long bolt out? It has the same 1ZZ engine but all the videos I'm seeing (besides this one) are showing one of the engine mounts being undone and the engine jacked up slightly from the oil pan. Great video nonetheless!

    Ha! I swear I had seen you in real life before but I was like, Texas, couldn't be. Then I heard you talk about Atomic Auto in Portland and I was like, I knew it. I ran parts for NAPA a few years back and delivered there often. I'm pretty sure I saw you wrenching there and was enamored by your style. Small world.

    Good Job , My yoda rolla belt tensioner mounting bolt broke off coming out turning an easy job into a nightmare, im thinking the bolt must have been bent cross threaded or corroded cause there was a lot of resistance & i was tempted to tighten up the bolt and forget about it till it was totally shot since it wasn't as bad as the one in your vid .Anyways my fear came true when the bolt snapped flush with the block, I had to get a air drill with 90 deg angle & easy outs oh and remove a engine mount to jack the engine up to have enough room for the bit and then literally 2 hours of drilling later i managed to get the bolt out without ruining the threads and needing a helicoil that friggen sucked lol.

    I never wear gloves when working on my car >.< I just can't stand losing the tactile feel/control that I get with bare hands. I know it's bad and I've got a few scars on my hands/fingers from it but whenever I wear gloves for small detail work I just get pissed off.

    It wouldn't be a true "It's Faye" video if you didn't point at the name badge on your Toyota Technician's shirt. LOL! I can't wait for this channel to go mainstream and we can get Faye videos all the time. I watch so many automotive TH-cam channels and love them all but Faye's channel always mellows me out with quality enjoyable automotive learning. I guess she's spoiled me. Smiles.

    • @FayeHadley
      @FayeHadley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha why thank you for noticing my quirks, and I'm so glad my videos have that impression on you! Yes, if I ever make money from TH-cam, you bet I'd dedicate more time to creating content. That being said, I also really love my small community of people who watch my videos. I feel like the bigger you get, the more jerks come in here just to leave shitty comments, ya know?!

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FayeHadley Honestly, your quirks make you special and unique in this business. I also agree that a smaller channel has a more devote following. I'm glad I found your channel because you show real-life repairs that DIYer's can tackle because you show all the steps and give full commentary. It's really that good. IF there was EVER another TH-camr that I would love to see you collaborate with in the future, it would be Eric O. from South Main Auto. You both are so gracious and would work extremely well together on a video creation. I know he watches your channel because I've seen his comment on your quality work. I hope someday you reach out to him, or him to you, and you can both gain from the experience. He's a Toyota guy too!! hint, hint. Lol

    Hi Faye, Thanks for this great video. I just did this job with the help of this video and tightened the tensioner nut and bolt but not to any specific torque spec. Later I read somewhere on Reddit that the bolt should be torqued to 61 ft/lbs and the nut to 21 ft/lbs...is this correct...or should it just be snugged down..job was on a 2004 Celica GT. Thank you:)

    Faye, thanks for your videos, I know I can trust your work!, you're not about taking advantage of people. A question in regards to this particular case. Gates sells two different belts for this application, one to be used with a hydraulic tensioner and one for a spring tensioner. How do I determine which one to use ?

    The bolt I have is frozen on the hanger😮. I would like to just do the shock . Looks like I need a 90-degree pneumatic wrench because the AC and Power steering lines are in the way

    The 03-07 corollas have lots of tensioner issues, and that tensioner retainer bolt can break off in the cover! You have to be VERY gentle with it.

    I'm not a fan of the hydraulic tensioner, so if you have a Toyota car with the 1ZZ, you can use the tensioner from a 1ZZ Pontiac Vibe (same fitment) that has a spring tensioner.
    I myself think that not being able to tension the belt by feel sort of blows and I found a conversion setup that replaces the hydraulic with a nut/bolt bracket tensioner.
    I stumbled upon it on eBay as "Motorking RK2005"
    It's a steel bracket, the welds kind of suck, but it seems OK. I'll install it this weekend.

    • @FayeHadley
      @FayeHadley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have installed a few and I haven't been super stoked on them, but I definitely understand the feeling. They seem to last for a really long time though, but folks with older cars don't like to spend the $$ on the first replacement of them. They aren't cheap!

    Wow im so glad i came across your site. I have two grown daughters and as a father who tells them mechanics is for everybody who is able body. They are both nurses and they see their pops who was prior service fix many friends cars and theirs cause i hate seeing people taken advantage of. Many folks dont have "grip" to pay shops the hourly pay or for marked parts. I have an idea for the less fortunate to create mechanic shops that are some how subsidized like they do hospitals and other stuff we need for daily living. Many billionairs and millionairs dont see a single parent who may live in a rural area that does not have public transportation have to drive many miles to a job or dont have a support system they can rely on. I am subin ya i found ya through the motor city mech. Keep up the great work and could ya do some trouble shooting with scan tools and do some tool ratings wat you feel are not expensive but reliable tools

    • @FayeHadley
      @FayeHadley  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thank you so much for the kind words, the inspiration, the sub, and also the suggestion! Yes! I will absolutely do that. I will write it down on my video idea list and when I find something that I feel is worthy, I will make a review for sure! I also definitely plan on making scan tool videos and more diagnostics!!

    Did you torque the tensioner bolt to Toyota recommended or just “tight”. Hearing a lot of nightmares about snapping the bolt head either on removal or installation. Also some other videos say the bolt doesn’t have the clearance as there is frame in the way, didn’t seem like you had that issue. They said to raise the engine a tad to allow the bolt to be removed 😮

    Wow, the tensioner replacement doesn't look too hard after all. I removed the belt once to inspect it, but was happy enough just figuring that out without worrying about the tensioner. I think lots of scaremongering forums I read while researching the serpentine procedure told me the tensioner should often be replaced. But I need to learn one thing at a time lol. Don't feel so nervous about having a look see next time I'm in there now. Actually just came here to remind myself what size long wrench needed - 19mm thanks.
