FYI to everyone, its a serpentine belt, not a timing belt. No marks are needed, only thing you cant accuretely do is torquing it in place, unless youre this guy. He knows what hes doing.
From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you. I have a stripped tensioner nut from the previous owner and they managed to snap the bolts holding my ac compressor on so I've been fighting getting it together. I was able to from this video
I thank you so much. This video reminded me of how to get the belt off so I can do work on my wife's car. I remember it was crazy on how you get it off, but could not remember the specifics. This saved me a lot of swearing.
This video is very helpful! Thanks. I have a whining noise and I put a stethoscope next to the crankcase pulley and it sure sounds like it’s it. Never changed anything on that side of the engine for 226,000 miles now, but I’ve changed a lot of things on the other side, lol.
On my corolla there is a simple work around to remove that splined bolt from the pulley. You will need a 9/16 box wrench and six 3/32 drill bits. Mount the tensioner in a vice pulley up. Place the 9/16 box wrench around the splined bolt head. insert the drill bit shanks between the wrench and the bolt spline slots to make a nice snug fit.
Mine keept reving high 2600 rpm excessively so i changed the IAC and fixed the miss fire on the Fuel injector wires.with 3m electrical tape works like dream come true.
Its been about 10 years since I had to change mine, I remember I put the pulley on backwards and it rubbed. Now the tensioner is leaking and the belt slips and squeals like crazy when it rains. I was trying to remember how to do it… I think I removed the upper mount and jacked up the motor a few inches to get to the pulley before… but that was a decade ago.. I can’t remember.. I do remember it was stripped out from the previous owner and I somehow used a pipe wrench to get the belt off.
Very helpful video, thank you very much. I'm going to change my pulley too . A quick question: if I want to use a torque wrench to torque the bolt, at how much torque would you suggest me to set the wrench to?
Quick question for you, my temp gauge in my celica GTS doesnt work at all. (No needle) and the heat doesnt work too.. keeps blowing cold air. What should I do thanks
Temp gauge needle displays just doesn't move at all from the lowest point? Aside from that, no hot air can be caused by a couple issues in the cooling system. If you live in a cold climate it is possible that your thermostat is failing to close and thus your needle never rises. This is just a guess though of course. Assuming it is the thermostat, it needs to be replaced (dealership sold me oem tstat and gasket for like $20ish bucks a couple years ago) it will require draining coolant, replacing the tstat/gasket and refilling the coolant with zerex asian red coolant (or toyo red if you really want to spend extra for the same quality) then the system has to be bled using the bleeding procedure (TSR has a vid about that on this channel) A shop can get you squared away. But it is definitely doable DIY with basic tools wrench, extension, 10mm, jacks, stands etc
This video really came in handy, Ik what I need to do to get my car back up and running. Currently my Car is At work. And it has this wild squeaking. It was fine this morning, (barely notice it was squeaking) but the squeaking just got loud out of nowhere. And at the end of the day my car just was having a hard time staying on, as the squeaking got louder being idle. How long should this take? An hour or so for first time?
If it's routed correctly (diagram 33 sec mark) and it's still loose. If I remember correctly, Belts are different for 1zz 2zz, the water pump pulley is different size. Rare but if someone swaped the pump (1zz on a 2zz) it will need a shorter belt.
Thank you for such a clear video, did you find out what that oil leak was and fix it? I suppose its between the front main seal, timing chain cover, but also could be that sensor or whatever it was that you pointed out?
My celica makes a funny noise only on start up and goes after initial start up , what could this be and will it be ok left . Been like this for couple years only when starting. Thanks
The new pulleys don't usally spin freely because of the drag of seals. After running for a little bit it will spin easier. My old pulley had a rattling/ gravelly sound when it spun. It should sound/be smooth.
My 2002 celica gts makes a chirping sound at idle. But it goes away when I start revving it up. Could it be the pully?? Also how long does the belt tensioner last?? My celica only has 41300 miles on it.
Mine is a 2000. It could be a couple of the things that I try earlier in this video. th-cam.com/video/YMVU-nJSIZs/w-d-xo.html . (at the 1:40 mark I spray water on the belt, the squeaking stops imedeatly. That means the belt is slipping and it is most likley not a bearing) Sometimes it take a bit to track down the cause. or it can be just an old belt
Do you not have to mark anything with a marker and set it’s setting after replacing a new belt? Why do I hear ppl saying make sure you have a marker to mark the spots before taking off the belt, so that setting won’t be off. On your video I didn’t see any of that. The reason why I ask is, I need to replace my timing belt but I don’t know how and scared to touch it lol.
A Timing belt drives the camshafts/valves. It requires that the timing marks are in the correct positions when installing. This is serpentine belt. It drives water pump alternator and such. No timing marks needed.
Different belt. This is the Alternator / Auxilliary belt. Also if you have a Celica like this one it doesn't have a timing belt. It has a chain and doesn't need changed. BTW thanks for the video TSR Garage i need to change my pulley its squeeling bad
Thanks, I found it easy to just do as you say but just put belt over alternator pully last, try not to smak yourself in the head when the breaker slips. I asked if you could please do a test for me on another video, maybe you missed my reply. I need to know the resistance measurements to ground for the oil pressure switch, on switch terminal, the one by the lift ocv by battery, not the one by the filter, with key off, key on, then with car running. I have replaced mine but am thinking maybe I got the wrong sensor, or I may have an oil drainback issue. Thanks if you can do, easy to reach the 1 wire sensor, just unplug, use alligator clip to sensor, meter to ground.
Thanks for the tip... that's why I do not use a pry bar (to much excitement lol). I have a motor that is out so I checked the sensors. Both of them measure 0 ohm. They have the same plug design. On this motor main oil pressure sensor is black lift sensor is gray. The lift pressure sensor will not change until the car goes into lift (oil control valve opens) when the OCV opens it let's pressure into the system.
TSR Garage awesome, that's what I thought, mine is 0 ohm key off, 0 ohm key on, open engine idling, I replace sensor with a grey and then again with a black, they all (3) test the same, I changed the ocv 3 times, same, I get a code p1692, but if I place a ground on the oil pressure sensor, I no longer get the code. The code reads coolant Gage curcuit high voltage, I started by replacing the coolant sensor, the ecu, then tested the wires from sensor to ecu, online vibe/Celica 2zz forums pointed me to the pressure switch, spent lots of hours on this issue. Now I know, I think I have 2 bad sensors???? They both go open when car is running (idling) thanks again and any advise is appreciated
@@GSskiracerjust some thoughts..... has someone switched wiring around on your oil sensor plug and temp plug (connectors) that's one way I can see that grounding the oil pressure connector would give you a coolant temp error. Just some thoughts🤔 does the temp gauge go up in the car or just the voltage error ? If it's just the voltage error its probably not swapped wires, may be just freaking the computer out by making it think it went into lift with engine cold. Good luck👍
TSR Garage the temp Gage goes up normal, It's when I grd the op sensor the code does not trip, with no grd I get code. By the way I can unplug the lift ocv and I still get code. I've cleaned the lift screen twice and used air to blow oil lines etc. If you have any idea what pressure at lift ops I should read at idle please lmk, thanks your the best
TSR Garage update, I read 60psi at oil pressure sensor at idle, with and without ocv connector on. Tried rotating ocv back and forth, no change. Looks like I may have an oil drainback problem at the lift ocv. Tried blowing out with air, may need to try pipe cleaner in drain holes???? Parking it for now I guess

does the belt turn the pulley clockwise or anti-clockwise?
Clockwise

in order to put back the timing belt, do you need to unscrew something?
This is not a timing belt. just the accesory drive belt. you just have to pull the tensioner back,
