      Electronic things in bicycles
      Electric bicycles
      27.5 fading off
29er dominating in every aspect from road (700c) to downhill
1x for all MTB from cheapest to flagships, from XC to DH
Increased travel to forks and shocks

-- More mullet bikes - the death of 27.5 front wheels??
-- An increase in high pivot bikes
      -- Yeti emtb (hopefully!!)
-- Long travel light emtbs with lower powered motors...
-- Lots of delayed bikes due to covid
-- The rise of more UK produced stuff due to brexit

    Predictions:
-The industry will take longer than we all like to catch up with production shortages, so we will see both an increase in the 2nd hand market (again) and any new tech launched will only become available long after the digital press camps.
-Racing will be pushed back and the field will be very different from previous seasons as riders struggle with bridging the lockdown.
-DH bikes will become closer to being custom rather than off-the-shelf - like a rally car, they will still be the pinnacle, but not something the average rider will ride.
-Tyres will launch with inserts built in
-EMTBs will evolve quicker than MTB and the gap between them will widen - trails will be added with uphills which are almost impossible on a standard MTB just to keep everyone happy.
    Dream:
-I can't be the only person who deams of the day we can talk in Metric standards.....
And I will make a video of the Bike Cave once it is finished :-)

Hi Doddy, I sincerely hope that mountain bike manufacturers actually take a single minute to actually care about bike fit in their sizing guidelines. Perhaps it's because I was a roady, but crank arm lengths and qfactors were key components of an optimal fit. 175mm cranks on a medium frame is INSANE. It behooves the industry to be conservative on crank arm lengths if they care about the long term health of customers. There will be many people forced to quit riding due to worn out knees and bad hips and backs etc... Q-factor and crank arm lengths have a greater impact on pedaling efficiency, as well as endurance and long term health of a rider's joints. A healthier and less fatigued rider will be in mountain biking a lot longer. The extra torque generated by longer cranks on a mountain bike are marginal, and probably contribute to greater wheel spin at the back. Also, in the attack position, the farther apart your feet are from one another, you've reduced the amount your legs can contribute in absorbing bumps or more of a symmetrical dexterity for cornering. I tried 175 cranks on my bike (normally 170mm), and right away i noticed I wasn't pumping as well, and the differences in my left/right cornering were exaggerated. The pedaling efficiency also went down in my case. I'm saying all this with the full understanding that size and fit are subjective, however I can't ever remember a fit methodology (NECA fit kit, Keith Bontrager, KOPS) which resulted in a rider under 5'10" riding with 175mm cranks unless they were doing TT's or track work. I've gleaned so much from GMBN since I started mountain biking 7 years ago. Many thanks for the great content!!! PS: if you aren't shuttling or on lifts, it's statistically impossible for you to not spend more TIME seated and pedaling going up, vs. standing on the pedals going down.

I love it, it's so versatile that I've sold my road bike and now just have two sets of wheels ready to go.

My first adult-size bike was a cheap completely solid steel-frame "Pacific Ricochet" my parents bought from K-Mart (American superstore) in the mid-90's.
I was just at the bike shop to buy my first new bike in 25 years and couldn't get over how much "hybrids" and gravel bikes (minus the drop bars) look like mountain bikes from the early-mid 90's...
None of the shop employees seemed to recognize the resemblance...

10:00 you got a point there - being a tall rider with long feet (1,96m, and 49 or 6'5" and 15) my heels are often rubbing on the rear chainstays. This will only get worse with with even wider rear axles.

Gravel bikes make a lot more sense in an arid climate. It's the same principal where a short travel bike offers more than a burly enduro bike on most trails. A drop bar gravel bike on dry, smoother trails and particularly fast singletrack is an absolute blast. On trails like that even a trail bike would be dull.

I agree, Doddy. Super wide is NOT required, use 32/ 36 spokes if necessary. We don't need a wider back end just a stronger one, and like some of the other commenters here my feet sometimes catch the stays on some bikes already. A great way to stop sales for bike companies, is to make them impractical.

The Manitou Mattoc and Mezzer forks are loved and raved about by many. And now they have renewed their XC fork the R7 Pro, it's finally similar weight to SID or SC fox. but with the suspension tech of the Mattoc... I've just ordered mine! and can't wait!

Variety, you would get a gravel bike because you allready have a MTB in the case of most people watching this. I ride my gravel bike because its fun on the trails that are boring on my Scout and would still be boring on an XC bike. Gravel bikes allow for mixed riding as they are good for anything from road to tamer mtb trails, where as an XC bike will be more boring and slower on the road and gravel. For the types of riding that you would do on a gravel bike, drop bars are more comfortable, assuming it fits you properly, as they allow you to move position. And your XC bike that weights 10-11kg proberly cost twice what my gravel bike costs, to get an xc bike as light as my gravel bike you would have to spend 3 times as much. Also I can go to my closest trail centre and embarrass some people on trail bikes bikes.

One thing I see is un-marketed carbon frames directly from the manufacturers in china - go to ebay, amazon or better yet ali-express, and search for an xc carbon frame. I personally bought one of these, a Lexon Spark, and it is really really nice - AM specs at XT weight. Built by American machines. Lighter than name brands and a fraction of the price. Also un-marketed components - The sensah brand - a xt insipired comp set - but definitely not a clone - it has its own engineering - is nicer than sram in my opinion - and at a fraction of the price.

Best head tube badge... hmmm... Animal BMX has a good one, S&M BMX has an iconic classic. Total BMX recently made a nice one for the Killabee K4. Okay, this is an MTB channel so, Nukeproof, if that were a badge not a decal it'd be sick. Orange has the most iconic and beautiful actual badge in my opinion.

    #AskGMBNTech
Hi Doddy, hope you're doing good. I've got a question about some not so new tech
My Fox 32 Performance has a 150mm travel and fitted on my 2016 Scott Genius. Bike was bought brand new in July 2020
I'm experiencing some vibration and a 'knocking' sound when I'm braking (front brake) heavily on a steep smooth road.
I'm not sure what it is but it feels like it's coming from the front axle and makes me think something is going to come off
    I've checked everything I can:
    1. Headset for creaks. I've even cleaned them and made sure there's no play
    2. Brake caliper is mounted securely on the fork
    3. Brake rotor is tightened correctly onto the wheel (Shimano centre lock type). Rotor is not bent as I do not hear any rubbing when front wheel is spinning
    4. Wheel spokes are tensioned correctly
    5. My wheel which is built around a standard Shimano 15TA x 100mm hub spins smoothly without any creaks from the bearings
    6. I've even tried loosening and also slightly tightening my QR TA. Same symptoms occur under both conditions
I'm not sure what else can be the culprit. The same 'knocking' sound is also heard when I cycle my front suspension
Would you know what could be the problem? Is it because a Fox 32 isn't really stiff enough for 150mm of travel and the vibration and knocking sound is due to the fork flexing a little during heavy braking? I hope it's not anything to do internally with the fork.
Please please please help. Thank you so much in advance. Lots of love from Malaysia

I’m not so keen on the old two bike comparison videos they always seem set up to favour one bike.
When I initially got my gravel
Bike I was riding a fair amount of mtb stuff on it. Yea it can do it but it’s grim, not something you wanna spend a lot of time doing. As an XC mtb would be much quicker and more comfortable for sure!
But then for the miles of disused railways turned into public footpaths and old country back roads and woodland single track its great it eats up the miles on these railways.
Pre lockdown I’d spend most my time at the Golfie riding enduro but if I want a change or scenic social ride, I’d pick up the gravel bike point it in a direction and just go.

I have a feeling people were looking for the old fashioned MTB, did not want to admit that and 'invented' the gravelbike..
I can see the use of a flatbar gravelbike where I live (in the Netherlands), but a full suspension cross country bike (with full lockout) would have my preference

The question shouldn't be "why do we need gravel bikes". The crux of the issue is, why are xc bikes still called xc bikes? They have moved well past the downhill capability of the xc bike of even 5yrs ago. Gravel bikes exist because the mountain bike community left a hole to be filled. Given the projected numbers of sales it appears it is a really big hole. As well, even if gravel bikes move toward flat bars( with bar ends?) they'll still be a gravel bike.

As the owner of a gravel bike they are useless apart from commuting. By a road bike and plan rides on roads and have great fun, buy a mountain bike and have great fun on trails. Buy a gravel bike and have an average ride on roads and trails where you are frustrated almost all the time.

I have 2 gravel bike (Orro Terra C and BH Gravel x which has flat bars.and 2 mtb. I don't think I would like to do a long ride on any mtb mostly due the the lack of hand position available. Also £ for £ the mountain bike will be heavier, lower spec. Both graavel bikes have 2x chainsets which is more preferable imo for longer rides. I have done long rides on older mtb's but back when they were lighter (26") and had a lot more gears, but was knackered at the end, while a long ride on a gravel bike is no problem.

What annoys me with changing standards is the way the indsustry wholesale abandons the old standards so quickly. I loved my Inbred, but ended up having to replace it after I crash damaged some parts purely due to lack of availability of kit for it. Ride a brand new Nukeproof Scout now, and now I'm wondering how long before that's obsolete?

#askgmbntech so after hearing about inserts for a while, your explanation in this video and reading the write up on the Vittoria webpage about their inserts has me seriously considering it for the first time. Here are some wonderings I have about them and their effects when running tubeless already. At roughly 200+ grams for inserts for the 2.6 to 2.8 width tires I prefer to run (for more cushion, traction, and simply the confidence-inspiring psychology of looking at that fat front tire as I approach an obstacle), it seems to me here we have a weight trade-off between a more endure/DH casing vs. a trail/XC casing as far as rotational mass/inertia goes. I'm a less is more fan in that dept. for sure and normally don't ride a lot of sharp rocks so I normally run a trail type casing (not DH or XC). It also seems we have a stiffness trade-off where if you run the insert, you can get away with a more supple casing that is lighter, so putting those two observations together, it seems a lighter casing tire with an insert is a wash on weight and a wash on durability/flat resistance (pinch flat anyway). It seems by reducing the air volume, in the tire even at the same PSI due to the volume the spacer takes up, we'd have more progressivity in response to tire compressions with the insert and less air volume versus no insert and more air volume, just like you would expect by inserting volume spacers into an air suspension component. Also, adding to this effect, it seems the inserts themselves have a kind of progressive compression since the small compressions just compress the corners of the insert which are less resistant to compression until you get into the full width thickness of the insert and then it's more resistant to crushing, and therefore is in itself has a progressive as opposed to linear response to compression force. Is this true? If so, that would lead to why one can run lower tire pressures with these inserts which should result in more trail compliance and increased contact by the tire leading to more grip over uneven terrain as the tire can more readily conform to the shape of say, a root. that being said, if pressures are TOO low, it seems the knobs would be more likely to just compress the carcass and be lest of a force cutting into loam and grabbing traction from penetrating down INTO the trail dirt, which we also know creates grip. So a bit of a mixed bag to a certain extent on grip perhaps? though i would imagine better overall grip in many conditions. Finally, my one concern with inserts is that with reduced air pressure and more compression of the tread surface contacting the trail, we'd like be anticipating an increase in rolling resistance at lower pressure, just like we would without inserts. Can you confirm this as well? And finally....how much % change in pressure are we talking based on the inserts? For example, if I run a 27.5x2.8 at 20 PSI up front and a 27.5x2.6 @ 22 PSI in the rear, if I put these inserts in both front and back (probably an XL up front and a L in back), what pressures would you expect I should be able to run with the inserts for comparable or improved performance? My riding weight is around 210-215 with all gear on etc. Thanks for this tip!
    Jeff

weight trade off I was referring to was trail casing tires plus inserts equalled DH casing for weight/rotational inertia
