    Long time Rift S user... When racing I kinda imagined that the wire was a HANS device...and the headset a helmet.. (helmets also limit your Fov in RL)
    In Flightsim, comms harnas ... helmet...
    I'm so happy with my new Pico 4 with shooters and things like Blade and Sorcery.. It really makes a lot of difference not having to keep track of a wire you can't see.

    I purchased a HP G2 Reverb for $300 on Black Friday recently, but it wasn't going to ship until January 14. I was thinking of getting the Quest 2 since I was impatient, but since I have the Quest 1, I cannot bear the brick on face feeling along with all the mods required to make it slightly bearable. The whole battery on back design, better FOV, 4K+ display, wireless, and pancake lenses sold me on the Pico 4. I was able to order one off of Ebay for $443 which is comparable to a retail Quest 2 price. The longest it would take is 7 days during Christmas times. I almost ordered it off of Amazon UK but it was about $40 more and 2 days longer for shipping. I have a Ryzen 9 7900x but a Radeon 5700xt so I know the GPU will likely bottleneck hard. I just hope they make improvements because my Quest 1 was really crappy when it first came out and got really bearable with my older PC specs. Just writing this for anyone in a similar situation ;)

      @Tom Bölling it isn't terrible at all. I made a budget system with the latest gen I3 paired with the 5700 XT and can play half life Alyx nicely on the Pico. Contractors is a little blurry but definitely playable. Saints and sinners wasnt that great. I thought the blacks were horrible but I recently got a 7900 xt and can confirm it's more of the graphics card. Pico also came out with great software upgrades since

    Thanks for sharing your views on the Pico 4.
    I pretty much agree on all your points, however I don't get why everyone talks about compression. I know it's technically there, but I simply cant see it, no matter how much I look.. Coming from using an Index the last couple of years, so maybe I'm just too impressed by the higher resolution of the Pico, to notice any artifacts.

    Awesome overview. Have 3090 ti with pico 4 VD godlike on f1 22 ultra quality +reshade and simhub transducers is the most immersive in VR I’ve tried. Goodbye flatscreen.
    I find pico 4 more comfortable than my old g2 due to the weight/cable/balance. I place the back strap higher than where you had it, not as tight and it actually makes it feel like wearing goggles instead of hmd. The built-in fan is underrated but I still use a fan for comfort and helps with nausea.
    For people who aren’t aware, VR requires a high level gfx card, even more so with these wireless hmds because of the encoding/decoding aspect.
    I think the reason why pico does better with stutters on sims in 90hz is because controller tracking is off. While fps games requiring controller result in stutters. It makes sense since 90hz is considered “experimental” for now. You’re right though, it’ll just get better, hoping soon.

    Sim Racing in VR is the holy grail of gaming for me :D I hope they will release "proper" VR racing sims, I mean games that were specifically made for the VR platform instead of just "modded". Dirt Rally 2 VR is still the most fun and most immersive gaming experience I ever had in my life, but it's just an addon to a game made for flat screens. And you notice that. And yeah, I spent quite some money on a PC that could handle DR2 in 90hz with good looking settings :D totally worth it though.

    Hmmm 🤔 In testing the Quest Pro wireless with Airlink I am getting nearly Aero quality visuals in PCVR games like Red Matter 2, HL Alyx and Wanderer with visuals cranked up 90 fps no problem. Simracing is very similar. I see a solid 85-90fps in AMS2 on a 3080ti on the Quest Pro using Airlink on high in game settings and it looks beautiful. I am sitting 4 ft from a router I am using as a wireless AP with the router being wired back to my main router and the ONLY thing on the wireless AP router is the headset. I am confused why your experience is so poor compared to mine. 3080ti isn't THAT much faster than the 3080. The 4090 just chews up VR and spits it out nom problem lol..but yeah the 3080ti is doing wireless PCVR like a champ!

    I will stick with my Tethered VR headsets for PCVR and SIM Racing games. The SIM Racing games struggle enough sometimes without adding wireless VR into the factor.
    I have 3 different VR headsets that I use. The Oculus Rift S, HP Reverb G2, and the Valve Index. And will stick with using these headsets for all my VR gaming.
    Wireless VR is still not there yet for me to replace my above VR headsets. They are still evolving and keep watching you tube videos to see if anything looks adequate for me to invest my money in to try. I would rather have the VR quality than doing the freedom of wireless. Maybe next year.

    you should definitely try using pico 4 without facemask for that racing sim.
    It gives really huuuge FOV and the difference is like watching through the window vs somebody kicks the barn doors wide open; a whole different experience in many levels.
    It's not comparable to other headsets when doing same comparison with or without facemaks, not even close. Also it is like using reaally huge glasses, the vr world feels more real and when your peripheral view isn't blocked you catch your displays on the sides in the corner of your eyes. i bet once you tested it you'll never go back and want a new kind of facemask asap, something like quest pro's forehead cushion.

    Hi Karl, brand new to VR and I’m still deciding on what to buy. I will be using mine predominantly for SIM racing so wired isn’t a problem. I’m running a RTX3090 and was looking at the G2 version 2. I still think wired would be best for me especially with the Pico 4 wiring issues. Watching this I think that would still be the case. Cheers.

    • @sherkhansher1981
      @sherkhansher1981 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would get G2 if you can’t wait for near future announcements for newer headsets. It’s cheap, hi res, clear but with smaller sweet spot, limited FOV, and last Gen lenses, giving you flatter colors comparing to pancake lenses like Quest Pro or Pico. It also needs a lot of juice to run at 4K 90fps. I had my G2 for 3 months, and been mostly happy but interested in new tech/lenses running on high end PC. Oh yeah, if you don’t care about tracking controllers, it’s a good buy, although they are usable, but not precise as Oculus headsets. Planning to try Quest Pro, a lot people are amazed by how good it is on 4090 cards 😂, and ditching their G2s for it.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I think the image quality looks better and clearer on the Pico 4. It's just a lot more pleasant for me. But the max IPD of the G2 is a bit too low for me, so getting a clear image requires a lot of effort (not to mention all of the shaking from the large amount of front weight). I even went back to my G2 that I haven't sold yet to compare and there's just no comparison. In terms of smoothness, I guess the Reverb G2 is very slightly better. But everything else that really matters on the Pico 4 tends to be so much better that I much prefer it (for me). Even in terms of image quality the artifacts are practically unnoticable unless I pay really, really close attention.
      But... I don't really play sim games, so I don't know how it compares to that. Half-Life Alyx looks amazing on it though and I use the real turning, not the instant turning. I'm using an RTX 3080 Ti, so in terms of performance it's only slightly less than what you'd get, I guess. Overal it depends on what you want out of the experience. I've personally heard that the G2 is the best for sim games. But like I said, I can't really say much about it it. If you don't mind a wire, I suggest getting a wired headset. I hate the wire so much that I'm more than willing to make a few small sacrifices to get a comfy, wireless experience.

    • @dtz1000
      @dtz1000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No budget was mentioned, so if you want the best then it's the Varjo Aero. Some people have said they prefer the Meta Quest Pro to the Reverb G2 for sims, so that's another option. Finally, you could wait a bit to see what the Pimax Crystal is like.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dtz1000 Yeah, the Pimax Crystal is definitely something to watch out for. Pimax headsets are known for being rather cumbersome in terms of setup though. There's also the Megane X headset coming out supposedly by the end of this year. It uses a cable, but it's very lightweight, uses OLED lenses AND can do HDR. Well, maybe it was miniled, but at least something that offers good contrast and black levels.

    I've only tried the Pico 4 some minutes in AMS2 and it was too choppy for my taste, while other PCVR-titles run very smooth and much better than my Vive Cosmos. So in sim-racing I would rather prefer the Cosmos even it's not a decent headset and for DR2 I would prefer VR, because I hate it on a display. Something with the FOV doesn't seem right in DR2 and similar titles like WRC10 deliver better depth perception even on a pancake screen, just sucks in most other areas. Otherwise I can gain a few tenths while hot lapping in VR it seems, but I'm not as consistent as with my 49". And online I just loose too much performance in VR to compete properly even in the so called best VR-racing-game AMS2. Certainly I wouldn't run ACC or rF2 in VR. I did it often enough to know how bad it is and once you are used to 100+ fps on a fast display, those fps-drops especially while cornering are a no go. And TrackIR is doing a good enough job for looking around in the car, so I don't miss anything significant regarding hFOV.

      @@n9ne I wouldn't say this doesn't play a role, but just was playing WRCG and far less problems there to see what's coming on a screen. It's sharper with more contrast, better depth perception and far more realistic and remarkable leveldesign. DR2 on the other hand wants you to fail and mislead you with deceptive corners, lack of signs and signals, probably AI-generated level-design and fussy graphics. Also the FOV feels to me like it's too high and corners appear too suddenly. I can't judge distances well in DR2 and the camera is bumpy af.

    @tomsawyer2112 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I notice your platform is not moving while using the headset, so I guess you haven't got into the troubles of setting up motion compensation,
    because pitching of the platform will increasingly lower or raise your seating position (down to a level where you can't see the road anymore),
    rolling will shift your seating position left and right (up to a level where you sit outside of the car).
    With the Quest 2, motion compensation is hard to configure, as some games like PC2 only run on Occulus Api, not on SteamVR, and motion compensation only works in SteamVR...
    My only solution up tday is to turn off the Headset tracking, which stops camera tracking, and the controllers will not be movable, which in racing is not a big problem.
    But in a flight simulator, to control the Dashboard of a plane, this is a problem.
    So I hope to see your experience with motion compensation anytime soon,
    and get your racing motion rig tested with a flight sim too....

    Hey Carl, good to see you are better.
    I have been following your videos of the low rider in dirt rally 2 and I can't help thinking that it looks too smooth and does not match the bumpyness that I see on the game screen. Dare I say it looks like "boat" like motion.
    I've been watching videos by DR2 record holder Matthias Fulczyk and his settings and rig, in my eyes looks like how I expect it to be.... really aggressive and tons of rapid movement. Its good to know that he's able to achieve his world record times with "real life" ish settings as I thought motion, you could never match a static rig as its "easier" in a static rig.
    I assume the low rider can achieve exactly the same extreme effect?
    I know its personal preference, can you give me insight in why you prefer your settings?
    Keep up the great videos.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of my motion you cannot see in the video's, it feels much more aggressive than it looks!
      Matthias Fulczyk is setup to look good on camera and when I run mine like that it's just too much, I've literally been thrown out of my seat!! lol But yes you can if you want to mate, as you say personal preference :)
      It is definitely easier with a static rig and weak FFB as you're not fighting with everything, but with enough practise you can learn to be just as fast IMO.

    Hey Karl, great video mate. Also have the quest 2 and pico 4 (I'm still quiet new to pcvr and learning how/what and WHERE to tweak to improve visual quality while keeping it smooth)
    One interesting problem I have (and perhaps so do others) is I'm not 'really' sure just how good it can/should look in vr.
    Just having a 4090 and jacking all the setting to max will obviously be really bad and trying to dial it down to get smooth is tricky.
    If you think there is value in it, do you think you could set some game visual settings in e.g ACC so that your monitor looks like the 'best smooth quality' visuals you've been able to extract from the Pico 4? This way you would be able to visually demonstrate what we can expect to aim for if we had a similar rig to yourself.
    Listening to you say how good the vr visuals are are good news but it's difficult to imagine and would be great if we had a visual example so we keep realistic expectations in mind while adjusting the settings.
    Sorry for the long post, hope it makes sense. 😉😎👍

    My experience with my Quest 2 is that hardwired to a PC with a Link cable provides a far better image than anything wireless. AC and Automobilista 2 are very playable at high quality in VR via Link. Crew Chief makes up for the narrow FOV. For me, much more immersive in VR than flat screens. Pros and cons for both. • @KarlGosling

      Thats odd as they both send a compressed video image using HEVC or H264 so will be the exact same visual quality (if you match RR and bitrate), assuming your wifi signal is very good of course, thats the usual variable when I see people having a poor experience wireless.

      @@KarlGosling Yes, it may be time to upgrade my router but I’m happy with the cable for sim racing. The quality in VR has come so far in the past two years. Used to be total crap and just a novelty and now it’s my preferred way to race AC and AMS2. Hope we continue on the same trajectory.

      @@KarlGosling The thing is, wired you can set the bitrate more than double (400+) than the max rate you can set wireless (max 200 with link, 150 with VD) Visual quality get a noticeable bump, and latency is better.
      Also, I suggest you to play with the FOV values in the Oculus debug tool. I can play every racing title with medium to high settings, 90 fps, Oculus resolution 1.7x (so native res) if I set both FOV values at 0.9 or so, with the 3080. Image clarity is very good on every sim but ACC, but we know ACC in VR is impossible to run.
      I think most people don't know that messing with those FOV values you can get a massive performance headroom to increase render resolution, ingame settings and hence a lot better visuals. It doesn't apply for Pico headset tough, until they have a similar setting I'm not aware of.

    The issue with both these is that they're wireless. I'd rather have the Pico 4 than the Quest 2, obviously, but what simmers might consider (in Europe) is the Pico Neo 3 Link. The Link part stands for the Displayport it has, which lets you plug the included 5-meter cable into your PC and get a pure, uncompressed image. Way clearer. Also, the 5 meter cable has a power port on it, plug in a 12 volt power brick (sadly not included) into that and it will keep the headset topped up for those long racing sessions. But, like all VR, of course, you need a beefy PC. VR users may be in actual need of the RTX 4090 in spite of its blinding sticker shock - that monster can actually maintain high framerates with good quality even with (essentially) two screens, like VR really is. In fact, the dream setup would be a monster PC with a 4090, and then one of the upcoming Pimax headsets that have way wider field of view, side to side. Instead of racing through binoculars, you get peripheral vision. But now prices are reaching nosebleed levels overall.

I spent a lot of time to find out the best configuration (FPS and Quality). And now a lot of YT and internet hype for Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop (aka game changer and so on..) It's a bullshit for me. I've bought Pico 4 few days ago for better FOV, resolution and overall "image quality". Tested everything (WiFi6, USB-C etehernet card, USB3 cable, Streaming Assistant and Virtual Desktop (Godlike on my RTX 4090). Sorry, there is no way to have even close what i have on Quest 2 with OpenXR Toolkit and Open Composite with USB3 cable (I mean FPS and overall image quality not FOV of course). Now I will return my Pico 4, stay with Quest 2 and in the time where I wait for Quest 3 I will try HP Reverb G2 V2 because have also better spec then Q2 but can work same straight way like Q2 (OXRT, OC) without this sh**ty heavy SteamVR which Pico 4 use. Try your configuratiion with Virtual Desktop instead Streaming Assistant and You will see much better quality and performance, yes it's true. But again, for me even VD it's not to close what i've got from OXRT and OC.
