You Rock... I updated this last week but didn't know how to configure it, you saved me a bunch of restless nights...
Couldn't make it work and really had me stumped. Looked on the links below the video and tried allowing it through my firewall, after adding ps3 media server to the list of programs allowed through I saved changes and instantly my ps3 was connected. Works a dream thanks!

I ended up opening some ports and it works like a charm now, I was even able to get MKV's to play without lagging
At the end 2012 I noticed that I could not use PMS. Looking online and finding nothing I switched to Plex,not the best but "any port in a storm".
I'd check again for info on my problem, and yes a few had the same trouble as me, but no solutions. So I stuck with Plex.
Until today, I found your video. It did not work for me but it inspired me to have another go at fixing it...guess what, after all this time it was my firewall that stopped access!! I am an idiot. Thank you for being so inspiring.

You likely won't need to do any of the ip configuration settings shown here. Simply download the ps3 media server, set up the folders you want your ps3 to have access to, and switch on the server. Connect your ps3 to the same network your computer is on as normal (no manual ip configuration), turn on media server, off and on if already enabled and give it about 60 seconds and your media server is there. Please note however this was through using a wireless network, it may be different if using a wired connection. I haven't tested using a wired connection, and if unsuccessful follow the guide in the video. But thank you YouLookLovelyDarling for the video, pointed me to the right direction.
Oh man... all I had to do was restart the router... feel like an idiot but this never happened before and plus i have other connections that was working perfectly but i do appreciate you responding so quickly, THANKS!!!

Dude, thanks so much for posting this. Really helpful. It got me 90% there but it didn't work....then a google search told me to set up an exception in Windows Firewall for Javaw.exe. Now works!!!!
Why are so many people having issues? There is no need to set a static IP address on the PS3. Your PS3 and computer have to be on the same subnet.
>Download and install
>In the general configuration tab you have to put the IP address of the host machine
>Under the navigation/share settings hit the + sign to add files/folders
>Save, quit reopen PS3 media server
>restart PS3.
If you plan on just transferring media you have to disable all the encoders or it will come up with a strange file size. Obviously the video codecs have to be compatible if you're just transferring them instead of encoding+streaming

- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
- MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
AVI
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
- Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

seriously? people you don't need to download anything! Just go:
Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center>Media streaming options Click on Allow all, that's it...

windows media streaming is not working with some format of movies
i tried it and very like it but i shocked when some movies is not supported
even the ps3 media server too
so i prefer PLEX media server is the best

this was much easier for me than the video explains... i simply installed the ps3 media server and it automatically worked from the start. maybe cause i used wifi instead of a wired connection? was way easy though...

make sure you have media streaming turned on in yr comp settings (start menu run:) media streaming options...click and turn on

Just to add... I fixed it by changing Force Networking on the Interface to WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)

OMG!!!!!Guys it's EASY if your using wireless disable the media server first then go to your internet connection settings and go on easy NOT CUSTOM do everything normal connect to your internet your wireless do scan then choose which one is yours wep,wpa-psk,......then when your done save it then test it then when your done go ahead and enable back your media server connection then sign in if not then u should see it its gonna say 'PS3 Media Server [your pc name]' and your done!!
THANK YOU!!! Not a tech guy in the slightest so this was EXTREMLY helpful and now I'm happily playing all my music on my laptop straight to my kick ass surround sound on my PS3. One question though: This will not affect my ability to play games online? Since I set it up I've been getting error messages and getting kick out of games... did I do something wrong??

thank you, i thing the ps3 network manual configuration is not needed, you just make it auto settings it works good and it takes valid ip in same local network and it works in my ps3

I recommend using a ethernet cable for connection ... wireless seems to lag alot .... i use cat 6 cable and have not had a problem yet.
but guys follow everything he says to do when he's on the computer but when he goes on the ps3 and he's using wired connection and your not using wired connection and your using wireless follow these steps underneath after u did everthing he said to do on the computer.Your Welcome! :D

if it is streaming and having frame rate issues i suggest just downloading it to your ps3 i have 250g so not a big deal

Opening the ports fixed a problem that I had with the stream being cut off every couple of minutes. To fix the MKV lag problem I had to edit one of the files with notepad and change the amount of ram Java was getting (My PC was only giving Java like 1gig when it needed just a little more to play the video smooth) sadly I can't find the how to that told me how to do it.

What's happening when the Media Player being used (PS3, PS4 or other renderer's), see's the PS3 Media Server but not the actual files when you click on it's folder?
Hello thanks for your time and info, I have a question. at the moment when I want to use my pc on my TV for any reason I connect it via HDMI, this way I get everything my pc contains, which I use mostly for viewing KODI instead of buying a box. I have tried numerous things but all I get is various files that appear. Is there any way I can get complete access to my pc wireless access that is via PS3 or my Smart TV ? Fixed it for myself, not sure what went on but .... Fix was, reset my firewall to default, then "Allow Java Access" popped up when I opened PS3MS and I hit allow. Fixed it... dunno what the fuhhhh, lot of frustration for something that shouldn't have been the problem lol. Whatever, hope anyone here finds what they need. Good luck.
I have everything you have done set up and working but I have a slightly off topic question. Where I'm living there is a server which has media files stored on it, any laptop can connect and watch any videos on it, there is also an apple tv using XBMC to play from it as well. My questions is; is it possible to have my PS3 connect independently to that so I don't need to have a laptop as a middleman?
In short I want to used it in the same way as a cracked apple tv.
I'd appreciate any advice.
