  • This video is about how to make grain spawn jars for growing mushrooms. Grain spawn is any cereal grain that has been inoculated with mycelium. Mycelium acts as the root system for a mushroom and consists of a fine network of filaments. The purpose of grain spawn is to allow the mycelium to multiply in a controlled environment. When the grain spawn has fully colonized the jar the grain kernels can be broken up and can be added to a bulk substrate. The mycelium will then colonize the bulk substrate and form fruiting bodies which are the mushrooms.

Making grain spawn jars is an easy and simple way to get into growing mushrooms and determine if it is something you would be interested in. Sterilization is essential because mold spores or bacteria will compete for the nutrients in the grain and can outgrow the mushroom mycelium. The cotton ball on the jar lid allows for some gas exchange while preventing contaminants from getting in the jar. The grain spawn should be white and fluffy. If it is another color this could indicate that it has been contaminated with other fungus spores or bacteria.

Great production values man. Quick question , once the jars with grain are ready to go into PC for sterilization - are the lids on tight or lose.?

They can be tight because they have the filter for air exchange.

so if you're using instant pot, then you should cook it for 120 minutes?

Is there a way to do this without a pressure cooker? Can I boil the jars for longer?

Nope the temp will only be at 212 you need it at 250 steam under pressure reaches that

Why are you cleaning the jars when you’re about to sterilize them? Seems a bit redundant

That's a trauma response to previous contamination events! 😅

IMHO, The ritual of the preparation is both meditative AND functional. So I think you should do whatever makes you feel good, and works for the end goal! With that in mind, and if you're not getting contamination, keep doing what you're doing.
      Be well.

Always take extra precautions, never get lazy and start slackin or you'll lose everything. It happened to me a few years ago because I got to comfortable and started cuttin steps and BAM all my product was contaminated 😢

in Germany and Switzerland, we say: Doppelt hält besser.
That means as much as: Double is better, and means better do double the work. 🙏🏻

Why aren't you using untapered jars so you can pop the substrate out in a terrarium once the mycelium covers it?
