      Of course! I love this stuff, so I'm extremely happy that someone else is also getting a kick out of it. Of course I have to breeze over a lot of details, but as the channel ages, I hope to go back over those stories and dig up the details. I hope you have a great week, and warmly welcome you to the channel and community, here! (I saw your Patreon support also, and just wanted to thank you again. It really helps me spend the time of the detail oriented deep dive content.)
      If you ever want to share a bit of science, biology, history, chemistry or ...well, whatever!, please feel free to. Likewise, if you're wanting to learn more about something, please let me know, and I will work on educating myself and the community on the subject, to the best of my abilities.
      Cheers, Mate.
      Alex.

    Very interesting. They loved to catalogue and categorise back in those early days . They were so good at drawing and painting back in the early days before photography. Every ne w species found would be illustrated. The great exhibition in london there were probably more fish at the exhibition than in the river thames. With london growing in size during the industrial revolution the river had turned into a stinking open sewer. The great stink. . Prompted the engineering of the modern sewer system. How far we have come in the last couple of hundred years. Civilization rise and fall. Sewer system was nothing new im sure when you look back in time.. fascinated you mention the surmariuns. . Cant spell. Back into the mists of time. Leading us into the modern age. Lost technology through wars and famine and disease can send us strait back to square one. Great video.

    Africa is probably the continent from wich we have the least variety of fishes known and available in the hobby. Meanwhile Congolese fishes were quite studied, as king Leopold II of Belgium was a nature lover and engaged various zoologists to investigate the country during the colonization era. Amongst them, Georges Albert Boulenger described many fascinating species like the Microctenopoma ansorgii, a uncommon abantoidei, rare but still breed, or the mysterious cave dwelling Congo blind barb. There is also a whole book, unfortunetely not easily accessible to the public writted by the ichtyologist Max Toll " Aquarium fish from belgian congo", same guy who described and discovered many Tanganyikan cichlidaes

Random fishy related history : Pope's big mitre hat is still fashioned after a fish head, similar idea to ancient priests of Assyrian fish god Ea-Oannes, Nimrod Babylonian Era. Ea ruled the deep to the Babylonians & Ioannes / Dagon the half man half fish was SunGod to the Chaldeans, as the Sun seemed to drop into the deep waters every evening.

But seeing that practically Society in it’s core Just repeats itself in cycle’s I’d assume he isn’t the only one. Maybe there were Christians in the Middle ages, Some African tribes dude, or someone in the Amazon thinking: hm. Maybe I’ll keep those fish. Let them breed and have Food. And then got attached to them. That there wouldn’t be any recording’s in those cases is preety clear but I’d put this in the: Possible Category.

    What filtration? Literally.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are you asking? Because many early aquariums had filtration in the form of fountains and surface area/ plant biofilttation, which the keepers didn't even understand, was the answer in it's self. But aeration was known about as far back as Rome and ancient China ...knowing it was needed to keep most fish alive.

      No worries, I was born and raised in Baghdad, and am Chaldean not Arab (ancient people of Babylon and Nunavut Valley). I also keep fish, so I was proud when learned that my ancestors where the first people who did it. Thanks for the work you did.
