  • I may re-record this video, due to my voice being slow at the start and the images not formatting correctly, just a heads up on any commentary...I know this one was rough around the edges... oh and I said "nephew"...I meant "nephew's wife"
    The Woman Who Invented The Modern Aquarium - Who Invinted the Aquarium? Jeanne Villepreux Power! The French Seamstress who created the first aquarium, studied countless fish and cephalopods including nautilus, cuttlefish and octopus.
    She was a naturalist, a feminist and brilliant mind who invented the glass water box aquarium inm 1832 in Sicily, Italy and then introduced it to the natural history museum in the UK, France, Germany and the world. From saltwater marine fish tanks to freshwater neocaridina and caridina shrimp, to guppies, angel fish, betta, koi, rainbowfish, hours is, discus, catfish. plecos and arrowana... we wouldnt be observing them quite the same without this naturalist's amazing mind and talented skills.

    Ohhh thank you for this. Not many people know of this woman. My daughter is going to be studying for her for a come to life museum event. She learned about her inventing the aquarium, and she thinks it's such a neat thing! She's excited 😆 We will be studying this video of yours to help my daughter with her studies! Thank you so much!

      they take more time to create, but Its what I envisioned the whole channel to be like initially. if TH-cam ever monetizes me (I've been due since February, I'll be posting more, because as is, non-monetized videos either get lost in the search engine and become hard to find after a few weeks.)

      thanks! welcome on in...theres a whole history playlist and some longer lectures on plecos, specific plants and also various historical figures. I hope for it to grow enough so that I can justify the time to put more than one historic video out a week, but as of now patreon is my only source of income and Seattle is a pricey city to rent in haha...so I'm always looking for graphic design and illustration work in between videos.

      thanks, her story is fascinating given the crazy turmoil of the era also. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I may re-record it due to a bit of a slow start verbally and some errors in my words saying "nephew" and not "nephew's wife"...plus she did a bunch of other cool stuff but I kept it mostly about the fish, not her fashion, investing, charity, geology, paleontology and astronomy based accomplishments.

      Lead and mercury with a bit or tin and zinc mixed in. Similar to stained glass from the middle ages. Also blown glass bowls, pressure fit glasses (only stay up when they're full of water and its pressure.

    Dude
    I just saw that video with Joey DIY and homeboy just could not handle with his giant ego the fact that you know more history than him and he couldn't even say who the man was that invented aquariums because you're the historian, anyway I enjoyed it but also it was weird

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol thanks... I mean you could argue several Dutch naturalists or Roman's or Chinese...or even Egyptians first domesticated fish...but the glass box containing a replica of an ecosystem... that idea, is well documented to be her works and publications. Anyhow, glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about the silly drama that led you here though haha

    Democracy is a Greek word and it did not come from the Romans at all. But nice video.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh totally... the idea of representative republic democracy...that's Roman (and Iroquois Confederation of Tribes)...and probably many other tribes... Also I know the Roman's only let a small percentage of men vote... Greece was democracy kind of...but not our form, and yes clearly demos for people and Kratia for power ....I majored in history, anthro and Mediterranean/north African studies, so I either misspoke or just dumbed things down a lot because it's a fish video

    • @marthanewsome6375
      @marthanewsome6375 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roman's were more republican rather than democratic and as you said they only let a small percentage of the public vote. But the Greek's were more democratic with letting more of their people have an actual say and thus the word comes from them and not the Romans. The Greeks were actually more democratic than our modern systems of democracy are. Also the Romans were more a fascist type system with a dictatorship as well. I too majored in Ancient History. I know this was a fish video and told you nice video and I loved the topic of a woman starting it all. It contrasts against the hobby being male orientated now and shows men that woman had a big influence in it. But thought you would get a lot of Greek people in here protesting about the fact you said where democracy came from that's all. As far as I am concerned and many others democracy came from Greece and not Rome at all. Romans in my perspective were elitist ass's and the Greeks were doing a type of democracy way before them too.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      but the Greek democracy was jury duty....elitist men only ...like everyone else....and arguably I like the idea of your average person being forced randomly to be a representative and then step down but soon it ended up the way Rome did... and it's only Athens city state we are speaking of. So yes, it's an English word translated from a french word derived from Roman/ Latin and that was derived from the words I mentioned which are Greek

    • @marthanewsome6375
      @marthanewsome6375 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, more democratic than elitism and compulsory army duty like the Romans. Yes, I am talking about mainly Athens, but the other Greek sub-countries at the time had similar idea's going, except of course the Spartans. Glad you finally gave the Greeks the recognition though. It had to be something to be given words to describe it. But did all that Ancient stuff after I did Art School at the age 13. When I tell people that I got into a top Art School at that age they freak out. But did a lot of life drawing from Roman and Greek and Egyptian statues and can see when the over laps actually happened with ideas. I thought it was very cool. But although people think Egypt was the beginning of it all I also understood about the Sumerian's as well, that I believe the whole Jewish and Christian beliefs are based on. But that may be getting a little to deep for a video about fish tanks. Hahaha
