When I see how beautiful wild types of many species of fish and reptiles are, I believe all of our breeding efforts haven’t done us anything favors.

I mostly agree but I've opened up a bit to different varieties of late. I love many varieties of guppies and things like that. Still not a fan at all of balloon breeds and that type of thing.

The most fascinating part about those ink prints is that it seems plants were widely used early on. I wonder when they went out of favor?
Because they are certainly making a comeback with modern lighting and I find that most people still fear and equate planted tanks to reef tanks with the level of knowledge and tinkering that needs to be done.

Plants never went out of fashion in Europe. In the 60’s to late 80’s the “Dutch style planted aquarium” was very much an envied type of aquarium, and concidered as the pride and joy of the home aquariums. The later years the japanese type of aquascaping as seen from Amano and others have giving the aquarium hobby a new way of life. A perfect scape and different type of scrimps are very common among european aquarists.

Thank you very kindly! And welcome (officially!) to the channel. I will definitely be on the lookout for Dutch fish club magazine etc. I have seen clippings of old "water gardens" but never found a full write up or old book on it (pre 1950s).. however I am starting to organize a 19 part series of fish keeping by the decades and a history of the tech & species entering.

So I use FishBase.de / fishbase.com for specific species info and location. I find where my main desired fish or plants are found, then Google the river or lake and try to find photos (even Google Street view can help sometimes). Then I look for several more species in the same waters and Google the country or water and Google scholar too

Thank YOU! YOU kicked off this little series (i wanted to do background on the articles you shared with me...and then do an episode on each one.) So thank you so very much Lorena! I highly recommend the paradise fish! They're very smart (like cichlids) and can get a bit violent if spawning...so zebra danios, cherry barbs, Rosy barbs, gold barbs are probably the best bet for also handling lower temps..lower o2 and being able to hold their own against the paradise fish.
