I absolutely adore the "Cinderella we survived" line, i know its been said before but its just amazing, both Rapunzel and Cinderella were victims of abuse, you don't have to singlehandedly save yourself from an abusive situation to be strong during it, they both survived it and even if the princes of their tales helped them escape that doesnt make them any less strong, it doesn't invalidate what they went through, i think it's really great
Let’s be real, they are my two favorite princesses because of that. They survived and escaped with the help of others who loved them and wanted them to be able to live a life where they knew their worth.
I really love how they didn't paint the princesses who fell in love and the princesses who fought independently in an opposing light. They're both strong and neither is better or worse in general, it just depends on what you feel is right for you. In a video from another channel that I saw, they were talking about believing in love and happiness, but I just didn't like how the princesses who never got married seemed to be annoyed with the princesses who believed in that kind of love. This video doesn't have that. I think we need more representation like this, because media is now telling us that falling in love or asking for help makes us weak, which it doesn't. This song tells us that no matter how you choose to live your life, it's valid.
They're not even mutually exclusive! One can fight their own fight while still having a romance. I wouldn't say Disney has bridged that gap, but it's been done by other places, so it can't be that difficult.
Oh yeah, for sure! I think that is a very good point to make... rather than pitting sides against each other, there really is value in showing that there are many ways to be "strong," and that looking a certain way or falling in love or not won't diminish that at all. It's good to point out that asking for help does not make you weak by any means. Too many of us fear reaching out to others because we feel it is a failure to ourselves to do so. It's good to be "independent" in the sense of pursuing your own path and being able to break free from those who want to put you down (not to say that you're weak for not being able to do that yet, though!), but if we conflate "independence" too much with "I don't need no man or anyone at all" it could do more harm than good, I think. I understand the desire to not make everything about romance (coming as someone aromantic myself!), but I don't at all think we should scoff at it, either. We should support and validate each other, not bring each other down
I dont know why Cinderella gets so much flak did they just not pay attention to the story. Cinderella is an abuse victim and despite that she still has an upbeat attitude, a kind heart, and a brave spirit. She handled her awful circumstances with unbelievable grace. And then she decides to rebel against her family and Go To The Ball just to have at least one night of fun for herself. So what if a Fairy Godmother and some mice helped her, is needing and accepting help a bad thing now???? Anyway she goes to the ball and basically managed to rizz up the (unbeknownst to her) prince so badly, the prince became desperate to find her to the point of using a shoe of all things when most people (including his aid) would have given it up for a bad job and say something along the lines of 'there are other fish in the sea'. And the Prince finds her and it's Happily Ever After because of course the Prince is going to help his One True Love. So for the love of God where in all of that is there a woman just waiting for a man to save her.
It's a story of surviving abuse, but theu don't care because they can make headlines out of it. It's easier to tear down the fictional character of a company than to critically analyse and call out the actually bad business practices of said company.
Also, there's nothing wrong with an abuse victim like Cinderella to want to be rescued by a hero, in this case, The Prince. People are allowed to want and be rescued, people are also allowed to save themselves.
@@painttedHyena1974LITERALLY. I love the stuff about finding courage yourself and saving yourself, but sometimes youre just tired. Sometimes desiring someone like The Prince is what you want/need.
That was beautiful. Imagine if they had this defense in Wreck It Ralph 2 instead of the scene that went viral. People forget these princesses are very similar to real life women who have been in their situation and have been victims of abuse but survived to tell the tale, too. If you're shaming Disney princesses like Cinderella or Rapunzel, you're basically shaming real-life women who have also dealt with the same thing.
Exactly!!! I think the exact same thing. The good thing abt cindy and Snowhite is that they managed to stay happy and positive even in that situation, but people dont appreciate it 😢
Plus Cinderella and rapunzel live in a time period where girls didn't even get half the freedom girls get today. What exactly do they expect them to do under those circumstances?!
That is utter nonsense. These princesses are fictional characters, and their worlds are anything but realistic. They are full of magic and talking animals. Early Disney Princess movies are some of the only fantasy movies in which the protagonist does not have any control over the fantasy elements. You can’t have it both ways, either the movie and everything in it reflects reality, or you lean into the fantasy. Otherwise the “realism” of the princesses just sticks out like a sore thumb in an unrealistic fantasy world
Cinderella was abused by an old, jealous, evil woman and her envious daughters. She wanted to have fun one night. One. Night. She didn’t even know the guy who asked her to dance was the Prince! She gritted her teeth and survived, her kindness towards the little animals and her wits saved her because the mice and birds helped her get out of the tower and then, keeping the other slipper allowed to be recognized and outsmarted Lady Tremaine who didn’t see that coming. CINDERELLA IS VALID!!
She’s so determined and kind. Like did you see in Cindy 3 when she just kept going to save herself and in 2 when she was so kind to her evil step sister and helped her change like my goodness gracious she’s a determined badass in her own way. I absolutely have newfound respect for her.
Honestly saying that "Don't be like Cinderella save yourself" is... kind of really terrible advice to give to anyone who is in that situation... or at least it overly simplifies the sheer conditioning a victim in that situation is under.
also, where could she have gone? That was her home with no support outside of it. In fact, I believe she did save herself by taking that one opportunity to get out. Yes, she did get help but accepting and even getting help is so difficult, so good for her.
@loviebeest yeah this wasnt 2024 she cant just run away and get police, noone will believe her. and she didnt ask for a fairy godmother or prince either. She tries to get out by surviving and being kind always to her family and her mice which in turn helps her. She tries to get out herself by making her own dress with her mice friends and plan but her sisters ruined it so she deserves a good thing after that misery
Cinderella didn't even expect to be saved. She just wanted one night, one night of freedom. BE LIKE CINDERELLA. Persevere through it, be kind, and don't give up. Cinderella saved herself, she kept going even though it WAS hopeless
"Save yourself" I don't know who is that girlie but she certainly forgot that Cinderella did save herself by keeping one glass slipper hidden which later, in any version of Cinderella, proved the prince that she is the girl that danced with him at the ball She also forgot that in the moive, Jac and Gus who were trapped by Lucifer was able to unlock her door because she whispered to the birds to get Bruno chased Lucifer away Save yourself? Well, she did! She knew she had one chance to get out and she ain't letting it slips by. It wasn't the prince that picked her up from the tower, she worked her way to get out of the tower herself!
The fact you stuck with the short hair design of rapunzel brings tears to my eyes! I had thought she looked just like me as a kid with the short brown hair, so when the series brought back her long golden hair, it had made me a little sad. This is a beautiful video
The way I see it, it's almost like a symbolism of her finally being freed from her abuser/kidnapper, bc think about it, iirc, all this mess started bc of mother Gothel's obsession with immorality and youth, and when she discovered that Rapunzel's hair has the same magic that the flower that kept her young and alive had, she decided to kidnap Rapunzel so she can stay alive and youthful for another God-knows-how-long, so when Eugene cuts Rapunzel's hair, it's like her being freed from her abuse, free to explore the world, to meet new people, make new friends, to finally live and be the person Gothel prevented her from being.
I honestly never understood the hate that Disney princesses get. I mean, sure some of the older ones were women of their time, but that doesn't mean that they don't have admirable qualities. Take Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora for instance. Sure, they don't fight a dragon or save a kingdom, but no matter what situation they were in they kept an air of optimism and they always maintained a sense of kindness to those around them. Since when did kindness and gentleness become a weakness? Especially for Cinderella's case. I think the people who say "She waited for a prince to save her. She should've saved herself" have no idea what it's like to grow up in an abusive household. And in regards to modern Disney princesses, they got more characterization, but people still criticize them. Like, if you watched the Little Mermaid you would know that before she even met Prince Eric, Ariel had a fascination for humans and dreamed of going on land. I think we need to give Disney princesses a little bit more credit because even if they don't do anything "heroic" most of them still exude positive qualities like kindness, perseverance, hope, determination, and so much more. And these are qualities that everyone can ascribe to, not just little girls. EDIT: Mama, I'm famous!!🤩
In that case, I think the originial little mermaid would have been more fitting for this since Prince Eric was the one who defeated Ursula in the original (I never understood why this detail was changed because that's how King Triton came to trust humans again? 🤷♀
Because things aren't made in an isolated bubble. The princesses aren't real women that all just happened to fall in love, and all just happened to need saving. Every single one of them was made by Disney in a society that is misogynistic. They made the princesses helpless and boy obsessed because they were being sexist. Criticising the fact that for years, every single Disney princess fell into this pattern isn't being mean to the princesses for falling in love or needing help, or saying women shouldn't do these things, it's pointing out a megacorp was being sexist. They don't do it so much nowadays, and haven't for a while, and for good reason. "Wahh wahhh don't hate on the princesses, they're nice, you're being mean" is something a child would respond to criticisms of sexism with, not adults.
@@madelinebitts2766 u forgot the existence of Mulan where she didnt need saving and in fact saved THE WHOLE CHINA lol U really want us to see Raya as someone who is willing to risk the world into a woman who once betrayed her and never shown any regret nor did she apologize up until that time? Girlie didnt ran off to flirt. She wanted to have fun and socialize
Hating on the older disney princesses should be stop. They have their own strength too. Even Snow White was great! She manages to take in charge of the dwarves house and teach the seven dwarfs some manners.
Animals almost always die trying to rescue them but you're the ones that aren't giving credit to the power of friendship. You rather say the magic is romance.
@@cluckcluckchicken I just hate how "go outside" has become another way to say "have the same opinion and world view I have" Just because you think older princesses don't get hate, it doesn't mean it's true.
Belle was always “my” princess. I was bullied/ignored through elementary school, (i literally had no friends until i was in 6th grade) so i was that kid always spending time off in a corner with a book. Belle’s strength was always in her own sense of self-worth, her independence and compassion I can/will/have fought people for writing her off as having “stockholm syndrome” because they just completely missed the point of her character. Belle is also static which you almost never see with a main character. She doesnt have an arc, she doesnt need one. Belle drives the plot forward. The world/people change (for the BETTER i might add) because of her actions and influence. And i just think thats NEAT!
Same!!! Huge BatB fan that always has to say at least something whenever some likes to bring up this stupid argument. Will disagree that Belle was static throughout the story, she changed along with Beast/Adam when they fell in love. She realized the value of inner beauty & loving someone for who they were BECAUSE of their differences.
@@mikafizz1022 She make that choice, because her attitude caused a positive change in the Beast/Adam. Before her, he was just a jerk, but she, unlike his servants dared to talk back to him, to even scream at him. And, through it, she caused him to change for the better. And as he began to change, she in turn saw him in a new light, enough to fall in love with him and have that "happily ever after". But, Belle does have a flat character arc. She never needed to change, just to find people that would love her for who she is and support her, which she got with her father and with the entirety of the castle.
The other day, my sister got mad at me because I said my favorite princess was Cinderella because she's "courageous and kind and worked for her happy ending" I got so embarrassed that I changed my answer to Tiana, who's tied with Cinderella btw, but omg this song explains it perfectly. I like Cinderella because her story shows that you can work and work and work, and you'll have hardships come your way, but good things can come to those who wait! No, she didn't fight anyone or get revenge on her step family, she chose to move on and take her happy ending, and I really like that.
My favorite's been Mulan since I was twelve (a lot because I could relate to her awkwardness and wanting to make her family proud), but my mom's favorite was always Cinderella. I used to be baffled by it, thinking it was an 'unfeminist' choice, but now I completely understand! I feel bad for all the times I gave her funny looks for saying she was her favorite.
Good news, Tiana is just as criticized because "but she cooks and that's in a kitchen". Ahhh yes, an industry of professionals that is entirely dominated by men that tend to bully women out of it. So you picked an equally put down princess. I like to pick a "top three" so if people complain I'm not being "progressive" enough, I can give them the hairy eyeball and ask if one of my three is "good enough" or maybe they're just a little misogynistic.
I always take Cinderella as a tale about how abuse victims do require help. Cinderella was a hardworking woman, she did her best everyday, and still, she was trapped. It was thanks to the Fairy's patronage she got a way out of forced servitude.
Fr my fav princess is aurora and most people got mad at me for that but she resonates me in a way that i am always dreaming and wishing for a life in a fairy tale since real life can be quite cruel to u with all the stress and pressure it have. I think there nothing to be ashamed of dreaming and wishing for someone to save u in a magical world. Every princess is special to someone and liking a classical princess doesn’t mean ur weak too, i wish someone understands that 😅
If your sister doesn't think Cinderella was strong or that she was just save or something, then you two should definitely watch Cinderella 3 (a Twist in Time) together. It's more action packed as a movie and it shows an alternative as to what would have happened if the prince selected someone else to be married, causing Cindy to fight for her man. The movie has some funny moments too. Cinderella 2 (even if we don't see as much of him here) and 3 both also show the prince more as a person who actually cares for Cinderella too and shows his reaction when the wrong girl fits his shoe. A lot of people just assumed he'd marry whoever but Cinderella 3 showed that he only wanted Cinderella and was just trying to help limit the search a bit the only way he could think of. Cinderella has always been my favorite princess. I liked her so much that as a kid I watched pretty much every movie I could that had the Cinderella plotline (not just the Disney ones). While I always fantasized about being whisked away by some adoring prince, one of the things I loved about her was how kind she was. She had a set of morals that she believed in and no matter how horrible her life became she always stuck to them. She was very strong to remain kind in such a cruel situation. The Disney sequels to Cinderella also explore how being brought up by the evil step mother effected her own children. For Drizzela she turned out very similar to her mother. For Anastasia it becomes clear that the way she treated Cinderella was a learned behaviour from her mother, one that she eventually unlearns. The sequels also show Anastasia's struggle with her mother's expectations for herself, eventually deciding she didn't want to live the life her mother was choosing for her, resulting on her needing to lean on Cinderella for support (Cinderella who helps her sister become a better person). Anastasia is one of my favorite characters from Disney and I am also really happy they never changed her character design to make her more stereotypical to how the other princesses look. Anyways, highly recommend the sequels if you haven't seen them.
Great musical. Disney should animate this and make it. It should’ve been in the 100th . Really suits how they seem to be reflecting women now. I’d love if you could make a musical on what character story is next for Disney
@@PixelPlayhouse you could it a musical audition. With the mouse watching from the top of a theater or something. Rising and giving a slow clap to the winner
I love that Mulan is like they say im an idol cuz i fought like a man cuz theres soooo much there about how female characters are so often only seen as “strong” when they exhibit masculine traits/actions. Yes she fought, but what made her successful as a soldier is the different perspective she brought to the table. Not brute force. When she acted outside expectation is when she accomplished the most. Her cleverness won the day, not brawn. Plus, she went to war specifically to prevent her father from being killed in the same fight. Ive seen people say she’s more aspirational and just stop at how she was a soldier - She didnt choose to leave home for honor or glory, she put herself at risk to protect her father- saving China on a whole came after that.
Exactly! People forget the reason why she went to the war. But most Importantly, they also forget that she was the *weakest* from all soldiers in the beginning because she didn't have the natural strength of a man, and how that defined the struggle she overcame afterwards through hardwork and her smart attitude.
Indeed! Mulan is like the others in how she loves so much. She wouldn't have gone off to war or worked that hard if she didn't love her father so much.
I'm glad in this animatic they added Snow White since she's the princess people are hating on and changing the story of because she fell in love. This song is so perfect.
I think a lot of people dislike snow white and sleeping beauty because of how absent they are in their own stories. And in the case of Snow White she’s canonically 14 with her prince being in his mid 20s - early 30s
@@pollylittle7568 Being absent doesn’t just mean not being on screen. It also means being absent as a character, not actively doing anything while your story happens to you. It’s one of the big things you get taught not to do in creative writing
@@zombiiebonezzShe narrowly escaped being murdered by her abusive stepmother, survived the fright of her life in the woods, and still had the simple purity of heart and perseverance to see a house and go "Oh, I should clean this up and see if I can stay here." Then she was ready to settle into a quiet life in the forest with all her friends, and she made a bunch of rambunctious old dwarves' lives so much better they were ready to go up in arms to protect her. She did what she could with what she knew to do, and she was willing to humbly accept whatever life threw her way. That takes a special kind of resilience.
Just LOVE how much in character they all are!! Especially Merida, "Who, me?? I don't really sing!" Gonna listen to this masterpiece on repeat from now on 👑
I totally loved this. It always makes me sad and a little bit angry when people talk down on the older primcesses or more "traditional" woman in general. People tend to forget the whole plot of the original movie when they bash the original princesses. They forget that Snow White ran away from her abusive step mother, she ran through a dark, dangerous forest and survived. They tend to forget that Cinderella didn't want to go to the ball because of the prince, she only wanted one night of freedom. They tend to forget that for all their talking of feminism they bash other woman for being more feminine in a traditional sense. They were strong in their own way, this video was perfect in showing that. I love every one of these princesses equally. Everyone of them is perfect. People just tend to forget that.
Honestly the “save yourself” kind of advice from that celebrity in the beginning gives off the vibes of how some people blame abuse victims of not getting out of the relationship. Now this isn’t just about women, it can be anybody. If you’re in an abusive relationship, it’s a complicated situation, some victims can’t see that the relationship they’re in isn’t healthy. Some victims are living under the same roof of their abusers. Some victims are too embarrassed or afraid to tell their story. We shouldn’t be giving advice like “save yourself”. At the end of the day, Disney princesses were made to make little girls feel special because a lot of Disney princesses can share the same features (and I know the older disney princess stories aren’t diverse but we have more and more diversity. In a way, Cinderella was in an abusive household. She was being treated awful, she was the caretaker of the home and the step-mother and step-sisters were absolute sadists with how they made sure Cinderella was in misery. However, Cinderella never let that change who she was. She was still nice and kind to the mice and animals, she was even kind to her step mother and step sisters even after they treated her like shit. The moral of the Disney Cinderella story, in my eyes at least, is do good and good things will come your way. It’s a perfect story of good consequences for your actions. Cinderella is very strong for not letting her abusers change her entire attitude. In the Disney version at least.. I can’t say the same for the original story of Cinderella which actually has a lot of different variations. We all know the brothers Grimm fairytale book but they didn’t actually write them, they just compiled them into a large book. I think Disney did a good job with their princesses with the first movies they made. Some sequels weren’t so great but nonetheless I think all the first movies of Disney princesses were perfect. The stories were great.
oh my god, i actually almost cried 😭 i’ve loved disney princesses all my life and would always get upset when people called them weak or “non feminist.” i’m glad that we’re finally realizing and appreciating that being a woman (or a princess) can mean different things, and no path is better than the other. my only wish is that modern day disney understood it as well.
2:33 I appreciate de addition of Alice and Wendy here! Peter Pan and Alice were my favorite Disney movies back when I was a kid. It brings me joy to see they are remembered.
I loved the song originally and now there's an awesome animation to go along with it. The song makes me tear up, it's so well written. Thank you for this vid!
For me, I read this song as a feminist tale. It has happened and still happens that people misunderstand female empowerment for "going against gender roles" and shame women who choose to be traditionally feminine. This also connects to the "not like other girls" mentality that girls and women tend to adopt because of internalized misogyny, where they feel the need to put down fellow women to feel better about themselves, and sometimes think that being masculine makes them better because they've been taught that femininity means weakness. But that's not the way to do it. This only furthers the oppression of women by giving them yet another, different standard for how they should be. We should all strive to make sure every woman lives the way she wants without being shamed for it - and as women, stop comparing ourselves in an attempt to undermine each other, for every woman can be strong in her own unique way :)
This. I almost feel like instead of fixing sexism the "equality" is everyone gets toxic masculinity pushed onto them. Like... The solution can't be crying is still considered weak but now for women too that's not what anyone really wants
that’s exactly the point. women are people too, and however they achieve their happy ending is just fine. be it becoming a warrior or marrying into royalty, be it becoming a business woman or a SAHM. i love that all the princesses are portrayed here as best friends with zero judgement for one another, because that’s the way girlhood ought to be. feminism without recognizing your fellow woman as anything but a regular person isn’t feminism in the slightest. support, don’t judge!
Choosing to stay true to oneself, being good, and avoiding toxicity is actually a very strong thing. People are surely will seeing psychologist after that much abuse.
0:11 Wym “rescue yourself” she was in an abusive family, it’s a miracle she even escaped at all. If you were in that situation and someone rich came up and said they want to marry you, don’t act like you wouldn’t take it! 😂
Cinderella was abused and never took it out on anyone. Despite the hardships she went through she never stopped being kind. Cinderella worked her butt off and all she wanted was a night out to enjoy herself, being feminine doesn’t make you weak. Also Cinderella 3 proves that Cinderella never waited for someone to save her she got herself to the ball she just had extra help from Her animal friends
This song is so pure! It's like the inverse of that "I Don't Need A Man" Disney fan song from a years ago, if anyone remembers it. I grew up seeing a lot of "girlboss" criticism against the princesses, and it always made me feel bad as someone who saw themselves in princesses like Cinderella rather than ones like Mulan (who are also great!). I'm glad those old ideas are being criticized now and that kids aren't being told that it's wrong to have a more gentle type of strength. There are all kinds of ways to be strong!
This is my exact problem with a lot of people’s criticisms of old Disney princesses, shaming a woman for falling in love IS misogynistic, people forget that Cinderella was kind despite what she went through, she was a hardworking and lovely young woman. But people forget her character because she fell in love. A lot of people say that about other princesses too like Ariel, Snow White, etc. and it annoys me sm. Thank you for making this.
Cinderella wanted fun at the ball just one night after the abuse and shit she went thru She didn't want the prince He was the side quest u didn't wanna do bc the main quest was wut u wanted (Goin to the ball) But somehow the side quest became imp in the lore so u HAD to do it and in the end honestly enjoyed it The princesses were always getting away from the restrictions they had to enjoy life And along they found true love Which lets be honest everyone wants some of Dat Tru love So they ain't at fault they never were and never will
Cinderella was always my favorite princess, I loved how strong she was. She was always so kind and gentle and then she got the fairytale ending that she deserved
Oh my god i loved this! All the princess’ and rapunzel’s ‘cinderella we survived’ just struck a cord. They survived, lived a life they loved from a bad situation, isnt that whats best?
I love the Cinderella story because it shows that being good kind, compassionate, and actually having hope are all traits of a hero, and traits that are actually valuable and powerful all in their own way. Its cheesy, but being kind is a trait that is often overlooked in modern protagonists, both male and female. Women in any story shouldn't have to make themselves more "tough" or "masculine" to be treated like a good character. (Unless you like it, that's your choice babes, live your truth)
"don't be like Cinderella waiting for a rich guy, save yourself" is such a bad take, the ones that helped Cinderella isn't even just the prince most of it came from her mice friends that accompanied her and the fairy godmother who gave her that push that allowed her to take that first step to "help herself"
I’m so tired of the argument and “the og princesses aren’t woke” etc. This song is perfect. There are multiple ways to be and to inspire. What matters is to stay true to yourself. And we all need a little help sometimes. And falling in love along the way isn’t a bad thing. It’s beautiful.
0:41 The one thing that would've made Ariel's line here even more powerful would be if it had been the original Ariel & not the Halle Bailey version since they tried to make her look more independent of her love of Eric (even though he was a key part of representing her love for the world above 😒)
@@Flyboy1953 I know Eric wasn’t her original or main motivation for wanting to go on land but he became part of what represented her love for the world above, hence why she was so drawn to him.
@@Flyboy1953 I know it's their talent so it's their choice. But I have to disagree with you on your point on LA Ariel being the same to og Ariel, LA little mermaid movie came out like that same with all the LA princesses(except Cinderella's) coz they had the intention on 'fixing' og Ariel's character and story that was unfairly criticized like the rest of the og princesses, so I don't understand on why they didn't use og Ariel design when they're singing about the og princesses receiving unfair hate and judgment.
Gotta love when the OG Princess’ get the respect they deserve. We can see it here for Cinderella, but the same should go for Snow White as well. Can we get a song for her too? She deserves it.
Cinderella is the most misunderstood princess I swear and I truly believe those who misunderstand her never actually watched the movie or saw it like once when they were a kid.. she’s my favorite princess because despite all the abuse she had to endure, losing both of her parents, losing her family home; she still chose kindness and forgiveness and she kept hoping for a better day. I related so much to Cinderella growing up. My mother and half sister treated me so horribly and I was the one pushed to do a lot of the cleaning in the house. I couldn’t go out and have friends and even when I managed to get a BF my mother had me clean the house before I could go to a school dance with him. Cinderella is strong and is deserving of love and the title of princess
This is why the Disney Princesses are my childhood role models! I can't tell you how GLAD I am to have watched every single Disney Princess movie from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Tangled. Disney Princesses RULE!!!💖🏰👑🥰
Same here! I mean, they aren't all perfect, and some are def products of their time, AND that doesn't mean there isn't something resonant in them to begin with!!
@PixelPlayhouse Animation idea for 2:07, you could make the arrow pierce one of the beignet into the side of the wall, and have her pull it out of the wall and eat it, while Tiana gives her a motherly look. Tiana gives off mom vibes in the movie and Merida grew up with brothers who fight over food. 😂 Also so we can see her drawn a little more ❤
Also, Cinderella DIDN'T, "just wait around for a man to save her." When she went to the ball it wasn't about finding a guy to sweep her of her feet, she just wanted a night off from her work, a night to wear her mother's dress, dance and forget about how awful her step-family is to her. She didn't even KNOW it was the prince she was dancing with.
The live action Cinderella was on of the only remakes that worked in the stories benefit. They really highlighted that Cinderella is a survivor and that her main motivation was the going to the ball and maybe see her friend, not finding a husband or impressing the prince. And in regards to the original animated film - I know I've said this before -, it's a prime example of why media literacy is so important. We as audiences can and do infer meaning from the stories we consume, regardless of weather or not the writers put it there. I'm not going to pretend I can see into the minds of the filmmakers in the 1950's, but I can hazard a guess that they weren’t thinking about Cinderella's strength as an abuse survivor when they wrote the script, and that it's plausible that they viewed the story exactly as we stereotype it by it's face value. They certainly didn't look at her with the same depth as they did in 2015. It was the audience and her fanbase that made sure she was seen for what she was, regardless of whether the writers did.
Interesting that live action Ariel was used, not that using her is a problem, but the rewriting for her compared to her animated counterpart, because Rachel Zegler's words ring true of modern Disney remakes, and LA Ariel was sadly effected by that as they removed the part, where Eric saves her in the end from Ursula with the ship. Modern Disney is no place for old timey Princesses like animated Cinderella, because now Disney wants them to be fearless, independent girlbosses who can save themselves... But also somebody else said it, original Ariel got that criticism, LA Ariel was changed due to it.
Honestly the one part i didnt like. 😂 that one change. They had the chance to have him help her and have them both defeat Ursula together. Missed opportunity
@@CEOofTired ironically we just had another raceswapped a few days ago, the characters based off of a real person so you can guess how well that went over with people
It's not just princesses, it's true for every woman in the world. There are women who are happy married out of high school, women, who happily serve in the military, women, who pursue their career or leave it to be a mother. The point is, as long as you are happy and true to yourself in the end, who cares if you are strong, independent or a good example? Cinderella doesn't have to teach us about saving herself. She teaches us about being kind to everyone, no matter the shitty situation you are in and knowing when to accept help.
People forget Cinderella is an abuse victim who stood up to her abuser and did fight for her happiness (when she escaped and showed them the slipper). To me, that is extremely strong and brave.
When Rapunzel said, “Cinderella, we survived!” I burst into tears! Damn that hit hard. Because they are strong, because they survive all of that. Also Merida at the end was hilarious.
Cindrella saved herself, and she was the victim of abuse, but she remained kind. And to be a strong we don't need to reject femininity, kindness and empathy are also a sign of courage.
"Cinderella..Banned, she waits for a rich guy to rescue her dont, rescue yourself. Obviously 🙄" How can she rescue herself from her abusive step mom? That just- I don't know what to say??? She is pretty powerless over her and she has no where to go when she does rescue herself. Real girl bosses know when to back down, and call for the big guns :) (Please let me know if there's anything wrong in my comment. I haven't seen Cinderella yet and only know the basic gist of it :) ) Also just like Rapunzel said, she survived, which is- great and also powerful and uh, they're all so so strong and brave and amazing for overcoming all their obstacles, the single handley ones, and the ones that got overcome with extra help too.
YEEESSSSSSSS! This is absolutely the reunion we needed between all of the Disney princesses throughout. I myself my prefer the newer ones and the ones that take more action but it’s so important to remember the ones who survived horrible things and held out until they found someone willing to fight for them. This is women’s solidarity: not comparing traumas or accomplishments, but celebrating their diversity and all that makes them unique.
The romance was always just a bonus, finding someone who felt just as passionate as you for your causes. This song should have definitely been Disney's 100th Anniversary.
I’m pretty sure that Cinderella didn’t wait for a man to save her. She just wanted a night out by herself, away from her abusive stepsisters and stepmother. She didn’t even know the prince. Her dreams are what kept her from having a breakdown.
Thank you for putting it out there that Ariel didn't change herself for a man! That drives me nuts! I'm an OG Ariel fan - it was my first theater movie way back when I was five years old in 1989. She wanted a different life BEFORE Eric, WAY before, and he was just the breaking point that made her go for it, love made her finally go for it. :)
I must admit I did always kinda look down on Cinderella but this song really does make me respect her and the other classical princesses especially the line "Cinderella we survived "
Amazing amazing! I love Cinderella and all the other princesses. Her story is one of kindness and perseverance. Her family was cruel to her and paints her as someone they needed to punish and discipline. Cinderella never let the pain of people hurting her to be an excuse to hurt them back in turn. She rebels through kindness, by proving them wrong with how they see her, by staying true to herself. She finds joy in her hobbies and simple pleasures and she made friends and found love through that! "Rescue yourself." is such a cruel thing to say to people in abusive homes, there is nothing wrong with getting help and it is not their fault they are in that position! I'm glad this musical animatic shows Cinderella surrounded by love and support.
Also sometimes you can’t get out of a situation on your own and you do need help. Not everyone is super strong and brave, some people need help. Cinderella did a lot to help herself, but she also relied on the mice, the fairy godmother, and ultimately the prince to escape her abuse. There’s nothing wrong with needing help.
Love that last part where Merida says she doesn’t sing, corresponding with the fact that she’s the only Disney princess who didn’t sing in her movie-and the only Pixar princess, for that matter. Wonderful music video, though. I love the song so much 😊
Abuse victims should not have to rescue themselves! And often times cannot! She gets out because she develops a support system and has those who love her and can help in small ways.
It's a breath of fresh air to have this interpretation. That no. You could be the main driving force of your story or you could have some help. You could choose to fall in love or not. You could choose to be kind or not. Whatever it may be being true to yourself is what makes a princess.
I literally cried watching this, for some time I was part of the stupid crowd criticizing and saying that princesses like Cinderella and Snow White were dumb and damaging, and honestly, I didn't start believing it because I thought myself, but rather because everyone else was saying it over and over again they ended up convincing me of something I didn't even believe, and because of that I also started changing myself and the way I act to eliminate all I could that resembled Cinderella, because I didn't want to be seen as stupid or too girly or too childish. Thankfully, with time, I've been able to realize that Cindy is actually a very strong fucking woman who everyone should look up to, she may not have saved her country, she may not have magical superpowers or something like that, but she has so much kindness and patience and love to give, she has herself and her friends and truly, that's all she needed to be happy, even in the awful situation she was in; through it all, she remained strong, an unwavering force of kindness not even lady Tremaine could defeat and that's just incredible and in my opinion, an amazing message to give to young girls, that sometimes you might find yourself in difficult situations you can't escape, but even when the universe is throwing rocks at you and trying to bring you down, the best you can do is face it with a kind smile, offer a helping hand to those in need and keep true to yourself, because ultimately, the people who you helped and held close in the way will be the ones to help you and protect you when you need it. God, I swear I could keep talking about this for so long.
"she waited for a rich guy" she was a slave in her own family and wanted to go to the ball, she did rescue herself and went tot he ball and got proposed to by a prince a few days later, obviously she would say yes
I also wanna add that Cinderella's prince did not save her. It was all the animal friends that she made by staying kind and generous even in a situation where she was miserable and had almost nothing
Cinderella littraly have the strongest mentality of all!! Like: dreaming of a better future and always waking up smiling in situation were you're treated as a slave in your own house when there was no human rights nor rules that can save you? She was literally abandoned yet she never lost hope. Her only way out of that situation was marriage, and that was completely out of reach because she was unknown, nobody knew of her existence , how could she ever dream of a proper partner? The only future ahead of her : eternal slavery or sold out in an unwanted marriage. Yet this girl never lost hope for a better tomorrow!!! This us why an opportunity for a better one came along and she took it! (Can we talk about how hopeless her situation was? If it wasn't for the fairy she'd lost the last chance for her life to change)
NEW SUB THIS IS AMAZING!!! I love how it depicts how a princess doesnt need a man to survive or just any woman! Cinderella survived through abuse and jealousy from her stepmother and stepsisters and the prince couldn even ask her, her name!? HOW COULD HE ALSO NOT REMEMBER OR NOT KNOW WHO SHE IS A DAY AFTER!?
To be fair, the prince didn't really expects her to just run out. He might would had asked soon if the clock didn't strike to 12. Then he find out that she didn't even know that he was the prince so he was both pretty confused and distracted in trying to stop her from leaving. Also, the duke was the one who went to find the girl who fits the slipper meaning that he would likely had brought her to the castle and have the prince see if it was the same girl or not.
I mean that can definitely be one depiction of the meaning I'd say though that for me, the big meaning is that its about how the princesses were never always looking for men but that some ended up with one because they fell in love in the process. In relation its meant to mean in the real world as well it doesn't matter if you fall in love or not, everyone's story varies and that's okay because we all have different good qualities and goals with value.
I absolutely adore this ! And the message that there’s no “right” way to be a princess! It feels to me like disney has tried to really step away from giving their princess or princess-like characters a love interest to show that they’re “strong” and “independent.” And to be fair, it’s good to have those characters too! But I’d also love to see more of their “strong independent” female leads in disney princess movies who do fall in love because I think it’s very important to show that the two can and should coexist. At the end of the day I think it’s all about having a good variety ! :))
People always forget that Snow White and her prince knew eachother in the Disney movie. They had a scene together in the beginning of the movie but people just think it’s witty to trash timeless stories that have been beloved for generations.
@@Danka42They're fictional characters, if your that uncomfortable with it. Take it up with Disney for promoting it. @@zombiiebonezz Actually the thing about the prince's age is false that was just a rumor that got spread around, Walt Disney himself never said or implied that, he's actually 18
At least we still have people who remember that each princess has a unique value, that falling in love or getting married does not dimish their efforts for their happy ending.
“No one can say we aren’t strong, Cinderella we survived” I grew up in abusive households. I didn't have the options to fight against what happened. I had to hold my head down and keep quiet to make it through. Even joining the military couldn't get me away because I was so beaten down and trapped in a home situation. Finding love, and later marrying him, is what finally got me out of those horrible situations. I made it through. Cinderella will *always* hold a place in my heart for this, because she shows that sometimes, surviving, remaining kind and good throughout, is also a strength. In short, thank you so, so very much for this!
YES SOMEONE FINALLY REMEMBERS RAPUNZEL HAS SHORT AND BROWN HAIR AT THE END OF THE MOVIE!! THANK YOU!!! As a brunette kid who always had pixie cuts growing up, it made me so happy to see a disney princess with similar hair since I felt too unfeminine for girls my age. It's one of the reasons tangled is one of my fav disney princess movies but disney's marketing always prefered the rapunzel with long blonde hair unfortunately
I like how other princess were added in this even though they weren’t actually in the real video. I loved seeing all of the different princess used in this video.
"Rescue yourself" is such a crazy take from that woman too and just an incredibly privileged perspective on surviving abusive or dangerous situations. No one wants to be alone. Whether it's familial, platonic, or romantic-everyone DESERVES people in their life who love them. Why is it bad for people who care about you to help you get away from somewhere/someone that was damaging or unhealthy? Why the hell would you demand a victim rescue themselves when I'm sure every person who HAS had to do that would tell you they'd have really appreciated someone by their side during such a difficult and scary time, in whatever form that may take. Like jesus fucking christ. I'm only alive today because of the friends who kept me going and giving me a reason to push back against my abusive dysfunctional upbringing. It's just fucking insane. And the Mulan bit really struck me. Mulan is hailed as this flawless picture of feminism by these backwards people not because of herself, who she was an individual strong woman who made her own choices, but because she was the most like a man and went to war? No one WANTS war, Mulan certainly didn't. Her story wasn't about being a warrior, it was about her doing whatever it took to take care of her family, to do the right thing and to be true to herself no matter how that made others perceive her. It's just so sad how many so called feminists have tried so hard to twist the movement to be just as misogynistic just in the other direction. You can't love or have emotions or be feminine in any way or you're a terrible woman! Like wtf. This was beautiful and I wish more people saw it and talked about it.
I love your art style, though I'm not a fan of you switching out only ariel for the live action remake version, it's the original ariel that got all the critisism about leaving the ocean for a man even though 'part of your world' was sung before she even met Eric, so she should've been the one represented here just like you did with all the other princesses original designs. The remake interviews even support these critisims and were acting like they did it better even tho they clearly missed the point of the original in the majority of the changes they made.
I think it's a little jarring style-wise since none of the others were swapped for their live action counterparts, but in a few news articles I've read, people have *still* stated that perhaps there's no point in making a remake because, in the end, it's still a story about a girl who gives up her voice for a man 🙄 When in *both* versions she had shown clear interest in human culture long before meeting Prince Eric. So I suppose you could interpret it as commentary on how some people will always hold women to an unreasonably high standard of independence, that they cannot be a good role model if what they do can be even slightly tied to a man.
I didn't even realize that was supposed to be Ariel. I completely forgot about the live action version 💀 I was sitting there like " Who is she supposed to be????"
@@smoxthybweh Yeah, I totally get the confustion! There are plenty of obscure Disney Princesses that don't really get marketed as them, and if I didn't stay up to date with Disney fandom stuff, I might have confused her with one of them too. Like Eilonwy, Giselle...some of whom actually have more reason to be called princesses than a lot of the modern ones (such as Mulan and Asha, who have no royal blood, *or* direct familial connections to someone with great authority in their society, basically making them the equivalent of a princess in their society---such as Moana or Raya)
women can be strong and independent, and fall in love with a man. Mulan saved her entire country, and fell in love with the Chinese army general, shang taught her how to fight in training and believed in her even when he found out she was a woman. Tiana had a big dream of owning her own restaurant, she learned she needs to focus more on herself and live her life as well. in the end she got married to a man she loved, and her restaurant. Cinderella was in an extremely abusive home and had the courage to go to a royal ball one night, impressing the prince and he saved her life. all these women in some way were strong, brave, and independent. but lets not forget that sometimes, even the strongest people need a hand to hold.
This is so beautiful, I always thought this way about the old school Disney princess, I think they have some many lovely treats that people always miss, such as kindness, emphathy and creativity, they fall in love and it’s okay. Their love story doesn’t have to invalidate themselves as a whole. There are so many things missing.
Oh this is so good! Props to Francesca on this, give my compliments to her as well as every actress in the music video! Now if you'll excuse me, im gonna go cry bc its just so sweet
That so amazing and so true too. Seems like so many movies nowadays are too focused on the "I'm a boss babe and I need no man" that forget to tell a story, that forget that real people fall in love too and there's nothing wrong with that, it's only one piece. Heck, some of those older moves show much more independence, goals, dreams in their characters, regardless of if they fall in love or not.
Cinderella is my favorite princess. Saying she is weak because she "was saved by a guy" when she survived a life of abuse is not knowing the story at all.
i used to hate cinderella when i was younger but then i actually understood how strong she was. most of the young women don't fight with bears or go to war instead of their fathers, but a lot of them experience abuse and cannot escape it so easily, but cinderella stayed kind. it was her way to fight, her way to protect herself. she could easily become just like her stepmother and step sisters but she kept her self-respect and still wanted to believe in good. (which is not so easy in this conditions) and yeah, when she saw the opportunity for her own happiness sh took it without a doubt cause she always knew she deserves to be happy.
Yah that line hit HARD!

Like, people on the internet are so mean dude. "You're not strong because you needed help." Is a stinky, incorrect statement.

This is so true. The hate's honestly so sad. Also - OH MY GOD YOU GET IT for the Cinderella and the Ariel thing!

@@mikafizz1022 She make that choice, because her attitude caused a positive change in the Beast/Adam.
Oh what would be interesting!
@@PixelPlayhouse you could it a musical audition. With the mouse watching from the top of a theater or something. Rising and giving a slow clap to the winner
Exactly!
Disney absolutely should not they'll ruin it
No they shouldn't it be awful 😭
@zombiiebonezz Snow White is in the majority of scenes, what do you mean? They actually cut a lot of the price for time
@@pollylittle7568 Being absent doesn’t just mean not being on screen.
@@jonquilgemstone I’m not saying snow white is bad, by herself she’s fine the prince is the issue I like the princess just fine tbh
Just LOVE how much in character they all are!! Especially Merida, "Who, me?? I don't really sing!"
Gonna listen to this masterpiece on repeat from now on 👑
This actually got me so emotional. The fact that people forget that every princess has their own strength is terrifying.
Animals be saving them
@@WillianyAmillTrue, but they still remained strong regardless.
THIS is my 100 years celebration
Oh wow thank you, that is a compliment 👑🤗
oh my god, i actually almost cried 😭 i’ve loved disney princesses all my life and would always get upset when people called them weak or “non feminist.” i’m glad that we’re finally realizing and appreciating that being a woman (or a princess) can mean different things, and no path is better than the other.
my only wish is that modern day disney understood it as well.
2:33 I appreciate de addition of Alice and Wendy here! Peter Pan and Alice were my favorite Disney movies back when I was a kid. It brings me joy to see they are remembered.
Alice is literally my favorite unofficial Disney princess
Thank you so much! I was having a lot of trouble figuring out who they were.
I loved the song originally and now there's an awesome animation to go along with it. The song makes me tear up, it's so well written. Thank you for this vid!
Aww thank you so much for sharing the kind words! So glad that you are here! 🤗
I think Cinderella is strong just not physically, but in other ways. The fact that she is still kind even after abuse is pretty cool.
Yes, Preach sister!
Choosing to stay true to oneself, being good, and avoiding toxicity is actually a very strong thing. People are surely will seeing psychologist after that much abuse.
I love how tiana has her hair down, it’s so pretty
so glad you noticed that! :)
Also Cinderella 3 proves that Cinderella never waited for someone to save her she got herself to the ball she just had extra help from
Her animal friends
Cinderella wanted fun at the ball just one night after the abuse and shit she went thru
She didn't want the prince
He was the side quest u didn't wanna do bc the main quest was wut u wanted (Goin to the ball)
But somehow the side quest became imp in the lore so u HAD to do it and in the end honestly enjoyed it
The princesses were always getting away from the restrictions they had to enjoy life
And along they found true love
Which lets be honest everyone wants some of Dat Tru love
So they ain't at fault they never were and never will
Cinderella was always my favorite princess, I loved how strong she was. She was always so kind and gentle and then she got the fairytale ending that she deserved
Oh my god i loved this! All the princess’ and rapunzel’s ‘cinderella we survived’ just struck a cord. They survived, lived a life they loved from a bad situation, isnt that whats best?
A man didnt rescue Cinderella...if anyone did, it was her fairy godmother! A WOMAN!
LMAO the Merida part 😭
Im glad that this time they didn't mock her like how it happened in the Wreck it Ralph 2
0:41 The one thing that would've made Ariel's line here even more powerful would be if it had been the original Ariel & not the Halle Bailey version since they tried to make her look more independent of her love of Eric (even though he was a key part of representing her love for the world above 😒)
@@Flyboy1953 I know Eric wasn’t her original or main motivation for wanting to go on land but he became part of what represented her love for the world above, hence why she was so drawn to him.
after all this they still didn't respect og Ariel and draw the LA one
@@Flyboy1953 I know it's their talent so it's their choice. But I have to disagree with you on your point on LA Ariel being the same to og Ariel, LA little mermaid movie came out like that same with all the LA princesses(except Cinderella's) coz they had the intention on 'fixing' og Ariel's character and story that was unfairly criticized like the rest of the og princesses, so I don't understand on why they didn't use og Ariel design when they're singing about the og princesses receiving unfair hate and judgment.
the voice actress/singer for ariel in this is black which was likely why they chose that design.
I really felt wrong that every other character was their original animated version except for Ariel
Gotta love when the OG Princess’ get the respect they deserve. We can see it here for Cinderella, but the same should go for Snow White as well. Can we get a song for her too? She deserves it.
Maybe one day!
wow ngl i actually cried. especially at the parts like "Cinderella we survived" and "every one is different"

@PixelPlayhouse
Animation idea for 2:07,
you could make the arrow pierce one of the beignet into the side of the wall, and have her pull it out of the wall and eat it, while Tiana gives her a motherly look.
Tiana gives off mom vibes in the movie and Merida grew up with brothers who fight over food. 😂
Also so we can see her drawn a little more ❤
@Flyboy1953Yeees, that is so lovely! I love Snow White so much, she absolutely would do that ❤
Also, Cinderella DIDN'T, "just wait around for a man to save her." When she went to the ball it wasn't about finding a guy to sweep her of her feet, she just wanted a night off from her work, a night to wear her mother's dress, dance and forget about how awful her step-family is to her. She didn't even KNOW it was the prince she was dancing with.
I’m so happy you added Merida! I love her (mainly because I’m Scottish, ginger and love archery) and I love the “who me? I don’t sing” at the end 😂
Im sad that they used the LA version when they didn't do the same thing with the others
Honestly the one part i didnt like. 😂 that one change. They had the chance to have him help her and have them both defeat Ursula together. Missed opportunity
It's stupid actually, considering the fact that red heads are always race swapped. Bad look on Disney imo.
@@CEOofTired ironically we just had another raceswapped a few days ago, the characters based off of a real person so you can guess how well that went over with people
They still should have used the original. It would add more to the criticism towards LA « modern take » and yes, blackwashing is not ok.
“Oh.. great! that’s true.. be yourself!” Had me dying for no reason
Victims of abuse that are strong enough to survive, but also stay kind and not perpetuate that abuse or dissuade them from happiness.
"Cinderella..Banned, she waits for a rich guy to rescue her dont, rescue yourself. Obviously 🙄"
How can she rescue herself from her abusive step mom?
That just- I don't know what to say??? She is pretty powerless over her and she has no where to go when she does rescue herself. Real girl bosses know when to back down, and call for the big guns :)
(Please let me know if there's anything wrong in my comment. I haven't seen Cinderella yet and only know the basic gist of it :) )
Also just like Rapunzel said, she survived, which is- great and also powerful and uh, they're all so so strong and brave and amazing for overcoming all their obstacles, the single handley ones, and the ones that got overcome with extra help too.
I love the song so much 😊
She sang chase the wind and touch the sky
Abuse victims should not have to rescue themselves! And often times cannot! She gets out because she develops a support system and has those who love her and can help in small ways.
I agree. The greatest strong female characters I’ve seen or read about had to develop to be become the strong characters they are
It's a breath of fresh air to have this interpretation.
Ok but I was fully expecting a “Sorry guys, I don’t sing” à la Flynn Ryder moment with Merida
@@jfk-t9oYe but tbh it woulda just been akward dancing all the way lol 😭
I mean that can definitely be one depiction of the meaning
I'd say though that for me, the big meaning is that its about how the princesses were never always looking for men but that some ended up with one because they fell in love in the process.

Merida always comes in with that banger line, I love her in these videos. 😂❤
"Hey Merida do you have anything to add?"
"Who me? I don't really sing."
At least we still have people who remember that each princess has a unique value, that falling in love or getting married does not dimish their efforts for their happy ending.
I love this animatic! How you portrayed the princess in the animatic and the message hits beautifully!
I'm loving these animatic musicals! Each video from Pixel Playhouse is a musical blessing!
“No one can say we aren’t strong, Cinderella we survived”
I grew up in abusive households.
This made me cry and I’m not even a little embarrassed to admit that.
same, tho it's probably soap
This LITERALLY gave me chills, thank you so much for sharing! All the team did an excellent job!
Thank YOU so much for watching, glad you liked it!
Cinderella is my favorite princess! It takes strength and courage to continue to be kind and be good in a world that can be cruel.
I love that you added Lady Marian from Robin Hood at the end, and Alice from Alice in Wonderland and Wendy from Peter Pan!
“Hey Merida, got anything to add?”
“Who, me? I don’t really sing.”
“Oh, okay. Yeah, be yourself.”
😭😭 I’m dying that’s too funny-
I like how other princess were added in this even though they weren’t actually in the real video.
Elsa is rocking those glasses and that sweater!
This was super cool! You did a great job putting it all together.
So I suppose you could interpret it as commentary on how some people will always hold women to an unreasonably high standard of independence, that they cannot be a good role model if what they do can be even slightly tied to a man.
honesty I think they mostly just did it because in the original music video for the song Ariel resembles her live action remake version more
@@breadwinner80 yeah but since they made the original video as well it's still a choice they made and it's very jarring.
D'aww, that's so cute!
Thank you so much!!
Cinderella is real because there's so many women who came from abusive homes, survived and broke the cycle by being happy and kind
women can be strong and independent, and fall in love with a man.
(which is not so easy in this conditions)
and yeah, when she saw the opportunity for her own happiness sh took it without a doubt cause she always knew she deserves to be happy.
