Disney Princess, also called the Princess Line, is a media franchise and toy line owned by the Walt Disney Company. Created by Disney Consumer Products chairman Andy Mooney, the franchise features a lineup of female protagonists who have appeared in various Disney franchises.
The franchise does not include all princess characters from the whole of Disney-owned media, but rather refers to select specific female lead characters from the company's animated films, including only protagonists of animated films from Walt Disney Pictures, with twelve characters from the Walt Disney Animation Studios films and one character from a Pixar film, and with the term "Princess" for the franchise being used as a title in a way unrelated to the royal title, being used as a term for specific heroines who have shown notable qualities. The thirteen characters in the franchise consist of Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya.
When Snow White, a princess, is exiled by her stepmother, an evil queen who wants to kill her, she runs into a forest. Soon, she is rescued by seven dwarfs who form a friendship with her.
When Cinderella's dream of attending the Royal Ball and meeting the Prince is hindered by her cruel stepmother, she gets some astounding help from her Fairy Godmother.

I agree with your lists, my favorite relationships go: Aurora & Phillip, Snow White & Prince Florian, and Cinderella & Prince Charming. I love Once Upon A Dream as a scene/song (I think it was surprisingly funny, after he joins her song, Aurora says, “we never met before”, Phillip: “yeah we have”, Aurora: “when”, Phillip: “once upon a dream😌”, he has some personality, then later Phillip: “when will I see you again”, Aurora: “oh never. Never!”), and I think Snow White dreaming of true love was sweet, Cinderella & Prince Charming are first if you include the sequels

The entirety of the classic Princess's stories weren't "being saved by men". They were demonstrating the strength it takes to _endure_ without losing yourself. To stay kind in the face of abuse. To hold onto hope when life is constantly telling you to give up. The thing is, everyone points to Mulan as being the first "strong" Disney princess because she can fight, but if you actually pay attention in her movie, she doesn't use her combat training to ultimately save the day. She uses her own intelligence, her own creativity, and her final "weapon" is a fan -- a fan, which was established right in the beginning as a symbol of femininity.
When people argue the classic Princesses teach young girls harmful lessons about "you need a man to save you", what they're really doing is supporting the idea that _masculine_ strength is the only valuable form of strength (i.e., "men are stronger than women"), which is the best kind of full circle irony.
Snow White in particular. She was, and always will be, my favorite princess, and I hate how much she got slandered. She was optimistic, kind, graceful, loving, caring, and playful, yet she wasn't a pushover and stood her ground. She had seven men listen to her, but she didn't do it by being mean, she did it out of love. Her kindness won Grumpy over, and he was the one to say that they all needed to rescue her. Snow White wasn't physically strong, she was emotionally and mentally strong. That's why I consider her a girlboss.
This also applies to Cinderella as well. She gets victim blamed for not standing up for herself, but she had a choice of staying with her abusive stepfamily or to live on the streets. She is a temperant woman, and she ONLY snuck out to have a night for herself. The Prince taking a liking to her was only a bonus. She was also clever, because she had a spare slipper, which granted her freedom.
It's perfectly fine if you prefer Rapunzel or Mulan, but it's ridiculous to say that Snow White and Cinderella were weak because they didn't stand up for themselves. I don't consider Aurora weak, mainly because she was hypnotized into pricking her finger.
I noticed too that when they “empower” women they do so by forcing them to reject femininity. Boys make fun of girls for having girl interests or liking pink or frills and girls also make fun of girls for it, but it’s actually normal and natural for girls to like those things.
I don't like that Snow White got nothing to do aside from the housekeeper work tve Dwarfes are to lazy to do.
Sadly that's still the case with most men.

@@CordeliaWagner1999 Unlike the Evil Queen, the Dwarves don’t force Snow White to cook and clean. She does it on her own free will in order to earn her keep. She also does it to show the Dwarves her great fullness for letting her live with them. It makes sense for Snow’s humble character, she doesn’t think she is too superior to do everyday chores.
@@CordeliaWagner1999 The Dwarves literally worked all day, of course they're not gonna clean the house everyday when they're too tired. And Snow White offered to do it out of free will for a place to stay, so what did you want her to do? Do nothing and expect the Dwarves to just take her in?
It actually aggravates me the crap Cinderella gets these days. It's like everyone has forgotten that mental and emotional strength is just as powerful as physical strength, if not greater than. Cinderella NEVER would have made it through life if she didn't have the mental fortitude she did to endure all the mental and emotional abuse her step-family threw at her.
Most people, even today, would just give up.
Not to mention the sequel, in which she had complete agency in trying to get the prince back.

There is a Disney princess parody (not really but best word to describe it) song about this! About how Cinderella gets shit on for falling in love and there is a cute moment between her and Rapunzel where she is like “We’ve made it out” talking about being free from their abusive mothers. It’s a good song wish more people had this view on them.
They basically say there is no right way to be a princess and if you fall in love that’s okay if you don’t that’s also okay!

@@JjJjJ200 Yeah, she used her own resources to do so, showing she was smart and creative as well. Unfortunately, to Disney -- and those they pander to -- this is just unacceptable; she must be aggressive and confrontational in order to be "strong".
It's sad to forget women like Snow White were stuck in sh*ty lives not too long ago. Brair Rose was the luckiest out of the og three.

@@Red-jl1qr you see that she does consider not biting it she tried to refuse Witch Queen Grimhilde's offer, same with Aurora trying to avoid touching the spindle...the only reason it happened in Aurora's case was hypnotism, Snow White just wound up doing it because she was hangry...and when you're hangry....you tend to do things you otherwise wouldn't...tricks or not.

I think it's interesting how in the original movie, Cinderella goes to the ball for herself to have a night of fun free of abuse and just happens to find love along the way. Meanwhile in the live-action remake they have Cinderella meet the Prince before the ball so now her motivation for going is "for a guy". I think it's a perfect example of how the remakes over-correct the originals to the point where they're sometimes creating more problems
That is because there was nothing to correct, they just wanted to have power over beloved classics.
And it's even not quite original. The prince pretending not to be the king, but to be employed at the castle. Take a look at "The Glass slipper". Encountering on horseback during a hunting scene. Take credit to Three hazelnuts for Cinderella. Also the live action movie feels rather like a Jane Austen inspired regency romance movie. Adding drama with king's death, with conspiration between stepmother and grand duke.

Going "for a guy" doesn't take away from the core of the story.
The story was about Cinderella being someone who endures hardship and stays strong enough to stay kind.
It didn't make her weaker or less of a good person. Her life didn't revolve around him.
If anything, I feel it simply gave them a reason to give a shit about each other. An actual meeting. That's it.

And even then,Cinderella's remake is among the best ones. At least in my opinion,the aesthetic is magical and I don't mind knowing about Cinderella's bio mother (as much as it makes the kindness thing just a tiny bit overdone after a bit)
I can defend the kisses. The kiss in Snow White was just an old European funerary custom where people would kiss an icon or cross beside the corpse or just outright kiss the corpse, usually on the forehead, but sometimes on the lips. Doing these things are seen as a final goodbye to the person...even if it's weird nowadays for many people. As for Aurora, Philip knew that was the only way to break the curse, so he just pecks her on the lips to wake her up. In that case, it's just the magical version of CPR.

I think people tend to forget that these couples don't all just fall in love over night. There's usually just an implied time skip to the wedding for the sake of the run time of the film in Cinderella's case. You're not supposed to think they got married the very next day. Honestly Disney could save a lot of money by rereleasing some of the old classics in theaters for limited runs like they used to back in the day.
Honestly, Ariel and Eric are the best couple in the princess line up because at they both have similar motivations and are both fleshed out characters.
Ironically Tiana and prince Navine are in fact the only ones who proposed to each other the same day. Though then again, they sent so much time together that they got time to know each other
Belle and Beast have the best romance because they actually work on being better people for each other (mostly Beast but still).

The Beast was a terrible person, which is the reason why he got cursed. However, because of Belle's kindness and compassion, he changed. When he told her to save her father, he was asked "Why did you let her go?" to which he replies "Because I love her". At that point, he didn't care about turning human again, all he cared about was Belle. If that isn't love, I don't know what is.
@@pr3ttytacky It was less Belle's kindness and compassion and more of Belle actually standing up to him and not taking his shit. Which is why criticisms of "Stockholm Syndrome" and "Life Coaching" are so shallow and off-base.
@@HobGungan She DID take him back to his castle and wash his wounds, even though she had the opportunity to leave and let him die, but she didn't. That's compassion. And she was kind, yet firm and stubborn. She wasn't a pushover, neither was she bossy and rude. She had a good balance.
And yes, I do agree with you on the whole point of Stockholm Syndrome. Belle NEVER fell for Beast when he was a huge brat, she fell for him when he became a good person. Those same women that say that support Victor x Emily, in which she kidnapped him twice, was extremely possessive, and wouldn't listen to him when he said that it was a mistake and how he never meant to propose to her. Emily only changed at about the end of the movie, when she saw Victoria and realized that she was in the wrong the whole time. Beast is a way better character than Emily is, yet teen girls and grown women defend Emily and hate on Victoria for no reason, even though Emily was the one that kidnapped Victor and wouldn't let him go, and Victoria was the unproblematic one that Victor was interested in.
"The *princes* are prizes" is actually a pretty interesting take.

About Prince Florian kissing the sleeping Snow White - historically it was common for people to kiss the deceased on the lips as a way of showing their love and as a way of saying goodbye.
I can understand people being weirded out by that kiss not knowing that it's European tradition, but for them saying that Prince Florian is a p3do is way too far. First off, a 14 year old girl would've been considered an adult because she had her period, and two, he's 18, in which 4 year age gaps were normal for marriage back in the Medieval Times. Snow White isn't "too young", she's an adult by that society's standards.
I saw a Tiktok where this girl dressed up as Aurora and was trying to teach kids consent because Aurora didn't consent to the kiss. HOW ELSE WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO WAKE UP?? HOW WAS PRINCE PHILIP SUPPOSED TO ASK FOR CONSENT WHEN SHE WAS UNDER A SPELL?? DID THAT GIRL WATCH THE MOVIE???

@@skcvy8167 Sleeping Beauty's grimm version is actually closer to the Disney movie, but they combined some elements. You took the earlier Charles Perrault version's ending...which also meant Audrey and her brother had to remove that needle from her finger...it was the needle. They toned it down, while making Cinderella darker. Disney's Cinderella was Perrault based, though some grimm elements are used in Twist in Time (like modifiying the slipper to fit Anastasia's foot or making Prince Christopher appear to be dense until Jaq and Gus tell him he's got the wrong lady).
That's oddly amusing there. Perrault told the equivalent of a modern Batman comic with Sleeping Beauty (she's actually called Talia in some versions too rather than Aurora), and a more tame story with Cinderella and the Brothers' Grimm reversed it.

Of the three OG Disney Princesses the one you can apply the stereotype to is Aurora only because she didn't get a ton of screen time and was the prince charming equivalent or her story. The funny thing though is when you realize that none of these girls were raised as princesses, at least not for long in Snow's case, both she and Cinderella worked as servants for years so they understood the value of hard work and you got the sense that if they were turned out on their own they could survive which they did. As for Aurora she was raised as a peasant girl, considering the fairies barely knew how to cook or sew I'm guessing she was doing a lot of housework too.
Actually it's implied that what happened there was a role switch on her 16th.

And even then that's only if you don't watch princess media made in the future. Spinoff and crossovers and remakes give her more personality and screen time.
Cinderella and snow White I mean those poor girls practically grew up as servants and goes. Something in my gut tells me she did too because the first scene we see of her as a teenager isn’t she washing the window?
I really hate how people view classic Disney princesses as weak, damsels in distress. They are strong in different ways. Physical strength is not the only strength out there. But if we are comparing them to other princesses, Snow White and Aurora would be in my bottom five.
If I can be quite frank, I don’t think *anyone* understands the original “Disney Princess” stories. Disney took stories with very gruesome narratives, and they managed to make people everywhere romantize those stories. They softened these stories for families, burying the original IP.
Now, does that mean that I dislike either version of these stories? No! Of course not. I feel like both of these versions were well-written classics, and they deserve to be recognized as that.
That being said, if you are making a live action adaptation of one of those old stories, it had *better* be faithful to the source material. If it isn’t, then it isn’t a “live action adaptation.” It’s just another version of the story. And if it’s well-written, that’s perfectly fine. However, if it’s based on a specific previous iteration of the story, you *do not* have the right to disrespect that version. If you do, why are you even making the movie? Just make your own original version of the story. Stop using nostalgia to try to boost box office earnings.
Well, yes and no. Snow White is only softened because of budget constraints and lack of knowledge about animation. Cinderella is actually a practically perfect adaptation based on Charles Perrault's version of the tale, put to paper 100 years before the Brother's Grimm.
Another point I see people ignore is that the stories were softened in some ways yes. In The Little Mermaid tale, the mermaids voice is taken by the witch physically cutting out her tongue. Or the stepsisters hacking off pieces of their feet in Cinderella. Is it really that important to you for young children to see bloody body mutilation in their Disney movies?
At the same time, they added darkness of their own in the form of the villains. With a few exceptions like maybe The Big Bad Wolf, the villains in the original fairy tales are pretty bland one note characters. The stepmother in Cinderella barely exists at all. Disney turned very flat sinister characters into extremely memorable and bombastic dark villains! The Sea Witch in story Little Mermaid is nothing like Ursula, I'll tell you that
I disagree somewhat. A live action adaption of a disney film should be adapted from the disney film. An adaption of the original story however is completely different, then you should adapt the og story as best you can with slight alterations.
But I don't think a live action adaption of disneys cinderella need to contain the toe-cutting scene since you're adapting the disney film. If you're making a live action adaption of the fairytale made by brothers grimm that is another matter entirely, imo.

But that’s just it, they were reimaginings of the original story: not a 1:1 adaptation. What I’m trying to say is, if you are marketing that you’re making a live action *adaptation* of a specific version of a story, you don’t have the right to disrespect that version (i.e Rachel Zegler and the original Disney animation). If you are making another reimagining of the story, that’s all good and dandy, but don’t market it as an adaptation. Market it as its own thing.

Its amazing how people forget Enchanted pretty lampshaded these tropes 2 decades ago. Even as a kid i always knew that they were satirizing while at the same time having fun as opposed to Frozen just blatantly stating it out.
Yeah, I agree. It's one of the main reasons why I can't stand that movie among other things. And they were judging Anna for a quick engagement but said nothing about Kristof letting someone he just met for ten seconds to adopt him. Yeesh!
@@MNAvenger The trolls were the reason why Elsa isolated herself for the longest time, yet Hans is the villain? Did you know that Hans wasn't even gonna be a villain? Since they thought Elsa's song was empowering, they changed the script, but didn't scrap the scenes beforehand. That's why Hans turned out to be a terrible twist villain.
@@pr3ttytacky I thought it was the parents that isolated Elsa? And I found Elsa's song annoying rather than empowering. Heck, I really felt nothing towards Elsa other than annoyance.

Elsa as a character is not good. She was anxious and afraid, which does make a good motive for a villain, but she got changed into an underbaked deurogonist instead. I don't get why women found her empowering when she's the most emotionally and mentally weak character in all the Disney films.

Then along came Philip who had all three things: a voice, a name said on screen, and a personality.
What's funny is that Snow White's prince, Florian, was supposed to be in more of the movie, but he kept going off-model and was too difficult to animate. There's a comic of the original plot that has him captured by the Evil Queen, which they later used for Philip's story in Sleeping Beauty.
I’ve been thinking about this for years because the idea you bring up at the very beginning (“power fantasy”) is very important for fairytales. These stories were made for the common / peasant folk, and the way that the princesses act is in line with the idea that a protagonist has no real power - protagonists in fairytales needs to be clever, or good hearted because they don’t have any other monetary or “military” resources. A peasant must rely on their mind because they don’t have the same power as the rich.
People think the princesses are the princes’ reward for saving the day, but the idea is that the princes are a prize for the women lol. And in our modern day that may not sound “better” but this is more about class. A peasants’ reward in fairytales, even fairytales with a male protagonists, are usually a feast or marrying a royal. Cause that’s what peasants wanted. Security, food, luxury.
Fairytales are meant to be retold to suit their current culture and audience but it really rubs me the wrong way how, like in the interview you posted, people do the whole “Don’t let a man save you, save yourself” thing, not realizing why these were written. To me it’s always been - “if you’re kind, people will help you when you need it” to contrast the fact that at the beginning they had no help. The common people (even if those people are mice lol) rise up against the more powerful adult figure, usually representative of “the rich”/the ruler. There are some issues but they aren’t completely anti-feminist. Sure, you can have Snow White save herself but in these movies there is at least the message of the oppressed rising up against the oppressor. That people join together to fight back.

The step mother is scary because she is real.
There aren't women out there who have magic mirrors or potions to turn you into a hag but there are PLENTY of evil Stepparents.
If nothing else, this controversy has given me -- somebody who mostly eschewed older Princess movies -- a massive appreciation for the strength of character the Princesses really have.
Personally, my favorite of these three ladies is Cinderella. I actually really enjoyed all three movies (despite the second one is a bit of a mess) but I always enjoyed her compassionate and caring side for Anastasia in the third movie and the last story in the second movie. Snow White as well isn’t my favorite, but she’s so adorable and is able to remain hopeful and optimistic in such a terrifying situation. I love how she manages to inspire Grumpy to be less grumpy and she never meant any harm. Aurora is probably one of my least favorite princesses, mainly because she doesn’t actually really do anything in her story aside dreaming about falling in love. But I definitely find Philip the best prince of the three because he had a more independent personality and was willing to give up his crown just for a peasant girl, regardless how little he actually knew her. But all these ladies are very beautiful women. I’m a little surprised you didn’t mention Walt Disney’s favorite character was actually Cinderella, and he even animated the final part when she’s transforming into her new dress and a sparkling halo appeared for a brief second, showing how pure of heart she truly is and why she was able to summon the fairy godmother.
I loved Sleeping Beauty as a kid. It was the only Princess movie I would watch. I love the simplicity of it. Not every story needs to be deep. I just love the art, I think the characters are sweet and charming to me. Prince Phillip was honestly really adorable when I rewatched it when I was older.
Exactly especialy family movies like those. Did any of them even watch any family movies in general? They are usualy not the deepest or complex.

I think the Sleeping Beauty movie is better if you view the three fairies as the actual main characters
They pretty much are. Aurora and Philip are essentially side characters, though Philip does shift to more of the hero role after the fairies free him from being imprisoned, since he has to battle through all the hinderances to reach Aurora and ultimately kill the dragon Maleficent. But even then the fairies are still fighting along side him and aiding him so he can win. They help him deliver the fatal blow. They get more screentime and character development than Philip and Aurora, but especially more than Aurora. I always liked this movie but it had an odd unfolding and odd character focus. Just different than most movies and fairytales/heroes/heroines. Like if Philip was truly the hero/protagonist he wouldn't have been captured and imprisoned with the only way out being magical fairies to come break him out. He would've been the one to break someone else out and kill the dragon without magical help. He could've had close calls, and a sidekick to help him but he would've been the one to save the day out of (mostly) his own abilities.
I do like these movies, and I appreciate it whenever someone else gives them their dues. I mean seriously, two out of three of them were a big risk to make at the time (1937 & 1950). Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was called Disney’s folly at one point, while the company would’ve gone bankrupt if Cinderella failed. Then Disney wanted the Medieval feel for Sleepy Beauty, which is why all the backgrounds are so much more detailed (debatably) than any movie before or since. For what they did, when they did, they did great (especially with representing older women in a more positive light).

I think while the mice are silly they do provide a very important dynamic. Cinderella cares for them, “people” who are of a lesser station while her step family does not. Cinderella is a good person, and they help her in the end. ALSO she isn’t just standing there in the final scene she is telling them “go get the dog! Have the dog get the horse!” AND she gets to pull out the slipper and be like HA “I’ve got the other one bitch”
Right, she used quick thinking (intelligence) and her friendships with those lesser "people" (animals) she saved and took care of to help her when she needed help, in the end. I had forgotten about that part until I rewatched it recently and was pleasantly surprised she WAS active in her own escape in this way.
I think they also serve as a mirror to her situation. The mice, like Cindy, are prisoners in a way in regards to Lucifer. They have to hide and sneak around the house just to get food because they are constantly in danger of Lucifer. And like you said, her kindness pays off in the end.
I love videos that highlight why these movies are classics even today. I feel it's important to remember the time period that these stories take place in and what little options and opportunities women had back then compared to modern day. Life expectancy was quite short back then, so it wasn't uncommon for people to be getting married at a younger age than they do today.
One thing I'd like to point out in Snow White, is that she's specifically wishing for the one she loves to find to her. When he shows up and she runs away, he says: "Now that I found you." As in they'd already met and fallen in love prior to this scene, but were separated and longing to be reunited. Snow White was mortified to be wearing rags when he seemingly popped up out of nowhere, because let's be honest, we all want to look our best around our crush. She didn't run away because he was a stranger, it was because she was embarrassed to be seen like that. The same reason Cinderella couldn't walk into the ball in a torn up dress
While I do admit that Prince Florian is the most boring out of all the Disney Princes, he was still sweet towards Snow White. The guy literally lifted the Dwarves so she could kiss their heads goodbye. I wish he had the screen time he was supposed to get, but the guy was hard to animate. I do think that he and Snow White make a sweet and adorable couple.
Unlike Cinderella, Aurora has very little screentime in her film, and Snow White never interacts with the Evil Queen outside of her disguise, so the dynamic and main story isn't as engaging because of it.

@@Master-Works I actually liked the fairies, but I can see how they may have been annoying given they served a similar function to the dwarves in "Snow White" as the main source of humor. And Disney was the only major animation company at the time, so people really didn't have better options, per se. I enjoy the film as a fairy tale, but not with it's character writing (except perhaps for Stefan) and the lack of music (there were only the gift songs, "I Wonder," and "Once Upon a Dream").

As for his character, all he did was kiss Snow White goodbye, in which it's European tradition to kiss your dead loved ones goodbye. Maybe we should talk about how gross majority of anime is. From lolis and shotas to sexualization of high schoolers, and maybe most of the problematic romances in shojo anime. Maid-Sama, Wolf Girl and the Black Prince, and majority of K-dramas. There's only a few shojo and K-dramas that have good romances in it, but that's not much.
Actually when you think about it Aurora does get to have a bit of a personality for us.
1. She is a nature lover and music lover. Totally would be a Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff if she went to Hogwarts.
2. She knows how to clean showing to be self-reliance on some level.
3. She knew the fairies were planning something on her birthday but played along showing she is patient and playful.
4. She found a loophole to meet up with Philip again without breaking her "aunts" rule right on the spot. Sure, she didn't know about a "little" secret but considering the fairies seem to be overall lenient with her outside of not going far and not talking to strangers, she figured it was a good compromise.
5. She finds out she's a princess, her "aunts" are really fairies, her parents are alive and she is going to be Queen to a huge kingdom (which doesn't help with the fact that she never been around other people before) all in just few hours. Oh, and the only stranger that she ever knew, she can't meet again since she is betrothed to supposedly someone else. She is so confused and upset. However, what do she do? She still goes back to her birth home out of duty and obedience. She may not knew it yet, but she is actually showing a early example of being a great future ruler by putting others first before herself.
6. She almost actually turned away from the spindle wheel just because she heard Merryweather yelled to not touch anything. Despite everything she still trusts the fairies to the point she was trying to fight back. Considering that this spell was unbreakable and Aurora is a normal naive young girl the fact that she was able to fight back at least a second was completely awesome. She must got more will-power than what many people thinks.
7. When she wakes up she is able to do a ballroom dance and be formal hinting that the fairies secretly were training her during her childhood for this without her knowing. They likely taught her writing, reading, the stars, basic math, nature, dancing and music. They weren't letting her go in blind despite her not realizing it.
8. She forgives her parents for giving her away understanding that they did it out of love and it is clear that they (along with Philip and Hubert) are all on their way to be a very happy family.
9. In a later short, Aurora learns to be a good future leader though her mistakes and wanting to make her family and friends proud of her.
A bit of historic context for Sleeping Beauty: not including Maleficent on the invitation list for princess aurora's baptism wasn't just a matter of courtesy, it was a matter of politics. Being invited meant being acknowledged by that kingdom's government as a person of station & power.... and Maleficent was _a faerie queen._ Deliberately NOT inviting her was tantamount a public declaration of "we refuse to recognize Mal as the faerie queen" - or even worse, "we refuse to recognize the faerie lands as it's own sovereign state."

I think that people might just be overthinking these movies, especially when they accuse them of being "anti-feminist." I think they seem to forget that they're just fictional. They're based off of fairy tales, not real life. And it's not just the classics that are accused of being "sexist," it's the Disney Renaissance era, too. Those movies are also works of fiction, based off of fairy tales.
Also, when people complain about the age gaps in these movies, I don't think they understand the historical context behind them. There used to be a time when women married young, because they didn't have a lot of options, and because people didn't live that long, back then. People shouldn't try to apply our logic to these stories.
Also, the original endings of fairy tales were usually a lot darker, than most Disney adaptations. There should be a video that discusses the differences between the books and the movies.
Honestly these 3 have always been my favorites of the princess line up. When I was a kid, it was Cinderella, as a teen is Aurora, and nowadays it's Snow White. I've always thought people unjustly shat on these characters and movies because of perceived notions that the films themselves don't actually portray.
Thank you!!! There’s nothing wrong with being a good, kind, optimistic person! As mentioned in the movie, the princesses aren’t necessarily the main characters, but they are the most important characters because they are the driving force of the plot. Everything done to help them shows how much they are loved, which is a result of their wonderful personalities. I think the fact that they included a need to be rescued says more good about their characters than bad, because while everyone else interprets it as weakness it actually shows how loved they are-because the ones that come to their aid are putting their lives on the line for them. But that’s just my opinion.
And they do traditional household work.

Honestly- Sleeping Beauty is my favorite movie out of the og 3. I’ve always loved it and the art is so super pretty. I also find Philip super charming (lol). I find most of the princess movies quite wonderful. The only one I “hate” is Little Mermaid. Not so much that I hate it as much I abhor how popular it is and how like she’s the most popular princess in all honesty. Belle is my absolute favorite princess and sometimes I just feel most of all the ladies gets shoved aside for Ariel.
I also swear between Snow White and Cinderella- both have been give SO MANY live action versions/remakes that I’m honestly tired of seeing them

I on the other hand never cared for Belle and felt that she was excessively praised over other princesses simply because her bookworm status was relatable. And I am a bookworm myself, but something about her general attitude has always rubbed me the wrong way and I just didn't care for how the story went.
Of the renaissance princesses, I think my favourite might be Mulan. I hate what they've done with her in the live action remake though. Her strength came from training, perseverance and the motivation to protect her family. She was also shown as smart and resourceful, and she didn't have bs powers. Other princesses I love are Tiana, Rapunzel and Anna, and other female Disney leads I love are Megara and Esmeralda.
Pocahontas deserves honourable mentions, but only for "Colours of the Wind" because I've developed a distaste for the way the movie took a real native person's story and warped it for the sake of romance and to make Pocahontas "more attractive" (or something along those lines... overall, it was pretty distasteful). If she weren't called that, and neither were John Smith and some modifications were made I think she might've been among my favourites even now. Sadly the only good thing that remains of it is that one song, but it is a beautiful one and speaks to me most out of any "Disney Princess" song. :(

another important thing to note is that these OG Disney Princesses were adapting very short stories into a feature length movie and the time was padded out with Love For The Medium. the amount of singing animals and birds and mice getting into Shenanigans is there for the sake of animation. old Disney movies are filled with the love artists put into their craft and they are meant to be, for the most part, eye candy. the way fabric moves, the way birds fold ribbons and bows, the argument between the three fairy godmothers as they make Aurora's dress, all of this is supposed to be visually pleasing. and all of it works, because it's the medium of animation! the issue with modern live action remakes is that they lose this aspect of the original in order to make the narrative 'better' (worse). and no one seems to care

I love these three classic movies the most from Disney. It’s the closest feeling to the Grimms’ fairytale. They feel like watching a storybook play out instead of “relatable main character trying to save the day”. They reward the characters with patience and kindness. I love how elegant the princesses move in the animations. I wish more movies create with a similar old classical story book style.

I don't completely disagree, but Ariel and Aurora had princes that had personality. Snow White was more of a story about platonic love and friendship, and Cinderella's was about temperance and perseverance. Their princes were their reward. Although it's implied that Snow White and Florian knew each other before she was forced into being a maid, hence the song that Florian was singing earlier in the movie.

The fact is that, Tangled was the last Disney film to use entirely the traditional and "conservative" formula of a classic princess film, since Snow White in 1937, it's practically the same story (with some evolutions of course). The truth is, as far as Disney is concerned, I don't think they'll ever make movies like that again.
I feel like the man kisses a poisoned girl and they both go together to a castle in the sky reminds me of when romeo and juilet both consumed poison to be together in the afterlife by drinking the poison off of their dead lover's lips.

I think Cinderella is the best out of these because of her strength of character. She went to the ball to take a break from her miserable life under Tremaine and ended up snagging a prince on the way, she was just looking for a shred of agency.
I think the first movie that really gave the prince his own character while keeping the princess as the main was Beauty and the Beast. My favorite Disney Princess Love Interest will always be Flynn/Eugene, though.
Flynn was hilarious and I loved his development as well as his interactions with just about everyone in the movie. Flynn & Rapunzel are my favourite Disney couple, I think, followed by Kristoff & Anna and Kiara & Kovu. Those two other love interests, plus Charming (from the third Cinderella movie), were also among my favourites.
Snow White and Cinderella both had to deal with losing their parents, being abused by those who supposed to be looking out for them and got kicked out of their rightful status. Meanwhile, Aurora had to adapt to a whole new lifestyle and a role that she didn't know she had to played along with getting to know the parents that she never got to grew up with.
Prince Florian I believes was giving her a goodbye kiss and is shown to be kind, romantic and a music lover like Snow White. Prince Charming fell in love with Cinderella because she hung out with him without knowing he was the prince. Philip and Aurora's parents were friends with each other meaning the two would had grown up together as children if Aurora wasn't sent away for her safety.
Also what is wrong with men and females relying on each other for different things? That how and why we were made for each other. For our different strengths and roles.

Technically Sleeping Beauty and Prince Phillipe already met before. And yes, I know she was a baby, but they live in a land where magic is a thing and there was magic being performed with her as a focal point. It could be that the Once Upon a Dream is a subconscious memory of someone they have no reason to distrust.
I will say, Maleficent isn't technically petty. My Scottish friend explained to me that it was a really big insult for her not to be invited to the birth of the princess even tho she's a malevolent fairy. In her words, they basically insulted an "unseelie" Fairy and she obliged to be herself

Dang, thanks for the new perspective on these movies and concepts. I'll admite i had got sucked into the "down with old princess movies!" Because of the women's rights movement, and though its great that we're more equal now, bashing on older content isnt great either. Not all of it was bad and for time it was empowering for women/girls. To keep having a positive attitude throw all the bs life and people throw at you is a powerful thing. It can help keep you going throw the toughest of times and strive for a better future. It can also be looked at as they knew they deserved better and pushed throw until better came. Either way, still good stories.

La abuela is more terrifying than Lady Tremaine, and yet she's supposed to be "not all that bad" just because she happens to have PTSD.
That's why Snow White is considered the fairest of them all, not just because of her beauty, because she is loving and kind. And that live action movie that they're going to make is going to ruin snow white forever.

A lot of people are beginning to understand the original characters of Snow White and Cinderellla again and that is such a sigh of relief. In Aurora's case, it's a little harder to understand what virtues she represents since she isn't as present but after watching the movie, you can say that she represents selflessness and sacrifice. In our modern era, people would see Aurora's ultimate goal of love as a waste of time but for her, it means everything. It's exactly what she wanted, yet, when told of her royal duties to marry someone else, instead of rebelling and almost causing a war out of selfishness, cough* cough* she goes with the fairies and accepts this responsibility for the greater good of her kingdom, (a kingdom that she never interacted with and thus owes nothing to if you think about it) fully believing she'd never meet Philip again.
There's just so much that people dont understand or falsley believe outside sources surrounding old things. Like the age gaps between these couples are not as big as most people believe, or the fact the princesses "do nothing" or "have no character". These women show joy, and grief, and endurance with kindness that most people dont understand today. They show strength in their joy in bad circumstances, and sass and stuborness when the odds are against them (snow white and the dwarves, & cinderella with the animals and her family). These characters exhibit a trait that most characters dont today which is a humble strength that underlines everything they do, snow white serving dutifully and dreaming of love, aroura dreaming of change, and cinderella dreaming of freedom. A lot of characters now scream about strength and independence and whatever else but for these characters dont wish for that it has naturally been built into them over the times of their trials. The dont need to wish for it because its being built into them as tensions rise, and i think thats better than it being the main goal for a character. Another i think people complain unfairly about is that these princesses receive help and dont "save themselves" but part of understanding yourself is understanding and being open to help when you've reached your limit, being able to trust others and depend on them in spite of past experiences is enviable, and a wonderful thing to be able to do. Cinderella being a victim of abuse and constantly being torn down shows unending kindness to all those around her and understands she cant do everything by herself but always makes sure to do her part to the fullest. Sure the mice made the dress but she worked hard doing all the work her family wanted, graciously received her friends work, and courageously went in front of her family despite knowing they didnt like her. She did everything in her power to go knowing the odds were against her. Then once she was at the end of herself help comes along again from the fairy godmother, and she has the strength to renew her hope and determination and has enough faith in humanity to trust this stranger after everything. Cinderella shows she's done her part by the fact she's the one who goes to the ball, she could've given up, she's determined to have a good kind and gladly receives the company of a stranger (the prince, also another act of trust) and pursues him as much as he pursues her. (Sidenote peolple skip over the fact that the movie shows them spending hours together, and not just dancing they had plenty of time to get aquainted) Cinderella really only anticipated having a good time and coming back to her abusive life indefinitely and when she figures out the person she liked and spent time with was the prince and that he wanted her she immediately dropped the demands of her family to pursue her wants, and even when she is stuck and the mice are helping she watches out for them and instructs them like a leader. Once again she pursues freedom and doesnt let the stepmother stop her, defying her at every turn and truly breaking free of her hold with nothing but her own strength and determination, magaic didnt do that and her friends didnt they merely encouraged her and stood beside her. Because of run time we dont get to see a lot of the prince and he feels like and empty shell but thats because the movie is not about tge romance it is about someone breaking free of torment and ridicule and showing remarkable virutes through trials most would give up in. Its a encouraging message to young people "Dont give up, Dont stop dreaming, Dont stop being kind, Dont stop trusting, Dont be to proud or afraid to accept help, love life at its worst and continue to pursue its best!"
I think you can tell my favorite movie by now but it just grinds my gears that people dont understand this story, this is one of the most relatable stories disney has ever made, this is what it looks like to continue living and dreaming when it all seems hopeless. Cinderella is my favorite from the art, to the music, and most of all the story and accurate characterization of a true heroin.

I’m very concerned for the people who can’t differentiate fiction from reality. Like WTF. Because of them, we can’t have any more great stories about princesses anymore.
I always viewed the stories of Snow White, Cinderella and the likes as stories about people who don’t have any power in their lives but they always keep pushing on.
Snow White and Cinderella represent women in abusive families, which is pretty realistic. It's dumb how Twitter women-children act like they could just walk right up to their stepmothers and say that they won't take it anymore. Snow White was forced to run away, and Cinderella would've starved on the streets. It took miracles for them to escape their abusive lives.
I think making every princess into a "world saving girl boss" while not entirely bad, definitely discounts the diverse personalities and expressions of the female experience. Some women just aren't the adventurerer type and that's okay. Princesses like Cinderella and snow white got through their hardship by enduring and persisting while remaining kind, clever and brave to everyone even if showing that kindess doesn't do anything to further them or their goals. They just chose to be good people despite their terrible circumstances and that made them friends that helped them overcome their obstacles and they found a community that kept them safe. Whether that be a forest animal or faefolk. Brute force and badass combat or magic isn't the only way to overcome obstacles.
The reason why the older princesses are put in a less positive light, aside from them not being given the opportunity to express character depth, is because back in the time they were made, that's ALL women were allowed to be portrayed as, and that's what made that stereotype an obstacle for newer production's like frozen to overcome. It doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with those princesses though. They are kind clever graceful and joyful. Those aren't bad things to be. I liked how snow white could find joy and friends anywhere she went just by being genuinely nice. Cinderella worked hard and showed kindness to her animal friends and eventually the opportunity arose that she could have her happily ever after.
Sleeping beauty I think we can all agree, having about 20 minutes of screentime in the whole movie, definitely took a backseat because of the nature of her story and nothing that happened to her was due to anything she did or didn't knowingly do it was just things happening to her. But I know people that like her for what little time she was on screen and she's their favorite princess because she could just sing and dance and live a happy life alone in the woods and thats okay too.
Every time I hear those bad faith critiques of the early princesses, I just want to scream “they are teenagers! 2/3 would be considered underage by our standards. And 2/3 were stuck in abusive families. Tf do you mean ‘save yourself’??”
Also, you touched on the idea of these stories being power fantasies. This is absolutely true when you think about what it’s like to be a young woman (especially in older time periods) stuck in circumstances like these. Of course you would dream of some stroke of luck, or a kind person, coming along to end your suffering. There is nothing wrong with that. And these stories gave hope or at least some kind of wishful thinking to people in those situations.
Plus, as some other comments have said, folks seem to love devaluing the mental strength that these girls have, acting like physical strength is the only thing that matters. There are many women who are and should be considered strong for their perseverance in hard times. So why, then, do we consider these fictional example to be bad for young girls? It doesn’t make any sense.

Honestly Sleeping beauty aka Little Briar Rose was never written in the book as being about the princess and mostly talks about the fairies/wise women or at least the relationships of everyone around her such as the prince and his family's relationship, or her relationship with the prince, etc. The book gravitates around her as the central idea or the reason for things happening in the world around her but she is never taking an active part in her own narrative.

I can’t recall the TH-camr, but I recently saw a take on OG Snow White that argued the prince was not a “character” but an embodiment of Snow White’s dream for a better life. The implication being that the castle in the sky where he takes her is heaven/heavenly reward after a lifetime of kindness in the face of adversity. This also means that the kiss did not save actually wake her up from death.
OG Snow White also needs to be contextualized within the time/society that it first aired. People were recovering from a world war and living in the Great Depression. Life was incredibly difficult, unfair, and unjust. In this toil, a fair princess who is ousted from her kingdom enamors people into carrying on and showing kindness, all while believing that their dreams may come true someday too.
i agree just because a character does not join in fights does not make them useless everyone bashes orihime from the anime and manga bleach because she does not fight shes the main healer without her so many people would be dead

She's never been my favorite disney princess,when I was little it was Ariel and nowadays is Belle and Rapunzel,but whenever someone tries to say Cinderella was submissive or a doormat I just become really defensive of her
Cinderella is a story about the strenght in kindness. The sheer mental power of remaining kind and hopeful while in such an awful enviornment,and how that effort to be kind is rewarded in the end. It always annoys me when people ignore she's a victim of actual domestic abuse and she's learned how to keep said abuse at a minimum,she's not happy with this life,she's not a doormat,but she knows Lady Tremaine will never take her side even the few times she tries to argue.
She accepts it cause she knows actively resisting makes it worse. Many abuse victims can tell you about learning to please their abuser to survive,it can be very bad. She didn't even want to go to the ball for the prince himself,a night of freedom sounded nice enough. Actually she didn't know she danced with *the* prince. And getting saved isn't bad,sometimes abuse victims need someone from the outside to pull them out,getting help is good.
And well it's a fairytale so of course they're a perfect match.
But yeah,I just will always defend Cinderella with my life. She's not as deep as other princesses,I can admit that,but people are way too harsh on her and it sometimes reads as victim blaming to me.
And people forget OG Cindy did get angry at Times.She did get frustrated,She did stand up for herself when she could..
But sadly!the live action remakes made her doormat,She always accused of being,She doesn't stand up for herself,her father dies when she adult and She both know and remember her mother.She also has human friend who could take her in and give her job lol..

And while I can see where they're going with some changes (I don't mind seeing her mother and I can appreciate actually focusing on Cinderella tbh) other changes just don't fully work (you could say she'd be way easier to find and be dragged back if she went to this human friend but idk if you'll have her there she could at least TRY to actually help)
There was a cut scene planned where the Prince heard the Wicked Queen's plan, and escaped from his prison to try and prevent it. Since she mentioned the kiss possibly undoing it while she was planning, he probably tried it to see if it would work -- since he wasn't able to get back in time to save Snow White. This also explains why he fell to one knee and started to look sad, because he probably felt some guilt for it. Ultimately, it was way too expensive and complex for the team to animate back then, but they talked about it being one of the scenes they wished had been in the movie. Part of the scene, along with some other cut scenes ended up in an old Snow White comic from Disney.
So there you all go. The Prince was a good guy who just tried to do what he heard would save Snow White. Nothing icky about it.
The underappreciation of Princess energy in general is frustrating. Without being a princess one could never evolve into queen or empress status. I see being a princess part of building remarkable strength, having witt, intelligence, and resilience in the face of adveristy. It's a test. Aurora is my favorite. She battled spiritual warfare as she and her counterpart fought for their true love's kiss to break a spell. Mulan fought to save her fathers life, Snow White lost her father and had an evil stepmother trying to take her out but she had a pure heart with hope. Cinderella remained strong in faith that her life could change and her future won't be so bleak. Ariel wanted freedom too. They all fought. They ultimately saved themselves in some way.
I have searched high and low to find the proof of the ages of the Snow White characters and I have never been able to find it. I couldn't find any definitive mention of Snow White's age anywhere until Buzzfeed critiques of Disney Princesses became popular in the mid 2010s, and even then, the earliest claim was uncited in a Huffington Post article. I have no idea where this came from. If you have found actual answers I would love to know
The problem in this movies is the lack of time. They could have more development, they could have more actives princesses an princes. But they were made long ago, when animation was more difficult, and ended having not a lot of time to expand in the story.
Prince Florian for example, had a character arc originally but it was cut because it was difficult to animate, and the company wasn't in it's best financially.
All of this characters could have been greater if they had more time to be. Maybe they would have been less misunderstood.

3:26 my mom showed me the Disney princess movies in order for some reason so I have a soft spot for Snow White + Cinderella and understand the plot and source material (which is even darker)
I think that the lesson people take away of "these girls need to be saved by a man" was also partially influenced by the cultural norms around gender roles in heterosexual relationships at the time these movies came out. Following the first wave of suffragette feminism and then later the rise of most women being in the American workforce in WWII, there was significant social pushback to both of these movements where cultural institutions and legal forces pushed for more conservative "traditional" femininity where women were not supposed to be in the public eye in the workforce. This was especially true by the time of the 1950s when Cinderella came out, as just 5 to 10 years prior most women had been employed full time in the US (as enough men were at war overseas that it was a necessity) and were economically independent from men in a way they hadn't been previously, and then within that time women had been fired en masse from those jobs and told to go back to depending on fathers and husbands for their housing and finances. While these movies and characters are inspiring as stories in isolation as themselves, and their original writings were reflective of a time hundreds of years ago in history when women were legally treated as property and thus mostly had to hope for a good marriage to save them if their family abused them, these films came out at a moment in American history where women had been pushing for voting rights only a few decades earlier, equal employment was still nowhere in sight and women wouldn't get the ability to open their own bank accounts or credit cards without male approval for another 20 years, and at the time there was a huge cultural backlash against feminism and women who wished to live their own lives separately from men. Between the huge "get out of the workforce and back into the kitchen" push of the decade, the lavender scare, McCarthyism, and the greater push for religiosity in the US in response to the rise of Soviet influence (for weird, complicated reasons), gender roles were being very strictly enforced during the 1950s and there was an increased crackdown on any women who differed from that ideal compared to prior decades. Since these movies came out at that moment and had the plot point of "a man saves a woman from a horrible situation by traditional heterosexual marriage", they wound up pushing that reactionary movement stating that the ultimate goal of women and girls was to get married and stay at home along despite the other possible messages about enduring hardship through kindness also being there.

Here's where I feel bad.... I've fallen prey to thinking the old school princesses weren't so strong and even dissed them a little but the truth is that they are super strong, they're just from a different time and often exhibit a different type of strength that's underrated - kindness and calmness even when they're being treated horribly, hope, and a hard-working attitude. They put others first and they can speak up for themself and others, I guess they are just understandably scared because of their circumstances and have to choose their battles, plus they tend to speak up in a classy way.... like less is more. A good example is when Cinderella explains why she should be able to go to the ball. She uses logic, common sense and royal regulations to be able to go and is calm and polite because she knows it's the only way that's going to work. These princesses can't physically fight plus they have to think of theirs and others' safety so they have to use other strengths and wits. I hope I can defend them more from now on and see things to look up to. Thanks for the video 🙏
I ADORE snow white because she reminds me of my grandmother. She's sweet, kind, motherly, but underneath she is stubborn and tenacious. Women back in the 1930s had to be homemakers, that's kind of the only role they were allowed once they got married, but the thing alot of people forget is that those women RAN the home. Just like snow white. She stays with the dwarves and essentially takes control of the whole house lol, the dwarves try to push back a little and she just steam rolls them 🤣🤣 this whole remake nonsense with live action snow white is just disappointing that not only disney, but modern culture as a whole, has so much disdain for the past and thinking that we're so much better and smarter now. The brand of "feminism" disney uses as a marketing ploy is not really feminism... it's projection of masculine traits onto female characters and calling it feminism 🙄 while completely shitting on traditional feminine traits and telling everyone how bad being feminine is 🤦♀️
They lost the point of the classic princesses and i suggest people to even look up the original tales and think ablut what they are trying to tell. Im a fairy tale lover and i think they are timeless in the sense that it does not matter that we dont live in a land that has 14th century royalty and life anymore, our society is very different but you can still relate to them and learn the lessons they are learning. They dont need to hyperfocus on the romance part of the story.
Also personally, Snowhite can come across with an open ending, as they get to the magican ethereal kingdom in the horizon, one could think that Snowhite is really dead and that she is making her dream come true after passing away, with the prince leading her to Heaven...Snowhite was not afraid of being a dark movie as you have seen.

Please are also forgetting that Snow White came out during the great depression and Cinderella 5 years after the end of WWII. Cultures (and morale) were very different back then and the films make sense for that time period.
