Honestly, I wonder why didn't the studio think about making a live action adaptation of this movie? Because Andrea is a better love interest than any of the live action Batman love interests. And the way they were able to humanize Batman/Bruce much more is just incredible. The line, "I didn't count on being happy." really gives such feels to the character. I think that line is probably why at times I can't feel the same about West, Keaton, Bale, Affleck, or even Pattinson (nothing against their portrayals), because their more focused on the Batman side and not enough on the Bruce side. And I still wonder why haven't they given Mark Hamill, a shot at playing Joker in live-action? All that being said, the thing that probably prevents this movie from being a 10/10 masterpiece, it still feels like it's missing something. Because for a film called Mask of the Phantasm, yet we only see the Phantasm for a 3rd of the film, and sure the reveal of Andrea being the character is perfection but I feel like the built up for it was kind of short, since the a good portion of the movie tackled the love and fall between Bruce and Andrea (If anything, a better title would be Batman: No Turn Back/Split Apart/Disconnected to symbolize how the origin of what made Bruce choose Batman "forever"). Also, when you watch the original trailer and the villain sounds like someone who's trying to impersonate Batman and frame him for murders with him coming next. And I guess you can say in some defense, this is the studios fault for rushing production and to commercialize the film too late, leading to it's box office failure. But even then, I feel there could have been one small change that could have made this film perfection. Here's how it goes: So Andrea learns what's happening to her father Carl, and while he orders her that they must leave town for good so the mob won't hurt them, Andrea says she there has to be another way. She can't come to lie to Bruce about leaving him and ends up confessing what her father has got himself into. And since the mob is high profiled, even if they called the police and got protection for Carl and Andrea, the mob has power to hunt them down. Bruce decides he wants to help, in order so that the cops will witness what the mob's done in order to bring them down. He tells Andrea to tell her father to make a meeting with the mob saying he's got the money and will meet them where they want. And so the next day, Carl arrives at the place, a chemical powerplant, and the gangsters are there. But their leader Salvatore Valestra isn't there and instead are lead by the gangster, who happens to be The Joker. He claims that Valestra made up his mind and decides no half measures and to kill Carl. Bruce and Andrea are masked up, hiding and see this, but Andrea bursts out from behind to try and save her father (despite Bruce's protest to wait for his signal) and attack the gang Bruce and Andrea put up a good fight until it's stop when pre-Joker gangster, overpowers the two with some smoke grenades. Carl realizes that it's Andrea, and sacrifices himself and jumps into the way to save his daughter and Bruce, getting killed in the process. Andrea in an emotional raged attempts to uses one of the guns on the floor to kill but Bruce stops her by pushing the guns away, but in the process, ends of hitting a power box causing some wires fall into the chemicals and and explosion occurs, the places starts to shake and go up in flames, causing pre-Joker gangster to fall into one of the vat chemicals. With with place in flames the gangsters flee and Bruce and Andrea find their own way out (maybe or maybe not they can get the dead Carl out of there too). Bruce and Andrea afterwards are left in despair and Bruce feels guilt for his goal was to save life and bring evil to justice, not let those be killed or kill evil. Andrea however can't live with the fact with what the mob did. To protect herself so that the mob won't find her, Andrea decides to leave the city, despite Bruce pleading no. But Andrea says that after what happened, she feels that Gotham is no longer safe anymore for her, so their relationship must end. Bruce realizing as well, that if any enemies knew that he had someone special they won't rest until they gotten to him through her (foreshadowing what he'll say to Diana in JLU). Bruce then decides that he must find his own way for justice and chooses to be Batman. Meanwhile though, the firefighters have put out most of the fire and have found the pre-gangster-Joker, except this time, he's now full Joker and while being hauled away in the ambulance, kills all the paramedics and driver and escapes giving the chilling laugh in the process. Now cut to present time, Andrea is the Phantasm but this time, she's got something else up her sleeve. The murders were intentional and Batman is being framed on purpose. Because this time Andrea believes that if Batman was to be representing justice and vengeance, then why aren't all these murderous, corrupt criminals of Gotham dead, including The Joker. Andrea can soon figure out that Bruce is Batman and while we aren't shown it yet, it'll be revealed that now Andrea feels betrayed. Now this time, Andrea's plan will be once all the criminals are down, it'll be Batman's/Bruce turn, but in a different way. So in the final climax where Joker and Andrea fight, Andrea is able to knock Joker out and is about to kill him but Bruce interferes and tries to stop Andrea but Andrea is having none of it and fights Bruce leading to an argument like this: Andrea/Phantasm: Face it Bruce, I'm doing what The Dark Knight they call justice fails to do! Bruce/Batman: You're no hero by being a murderer! (continues trying to prevent Andrea from fighting him) Stop it! Look, I'm sorry that we couldn't be together, and I wish I thought out our plan better to save your father! But don't end everything like this! Andrea: Is that what you think this is about?! That we never could be together? That we failed to save my dad? Bruce, I told you before, it's not our fault. But what I don't understand is WHY!?! If you're the hero they see you as, then WHY were they NOT DEAD, especially that murdering clown!?!? I mean, after what he's done, him taking the first shots, and I thought he was when he dead back there, but no. And he's still breathing, because of YOU! Batman: I didn't know Joker was the same guy as before until now! Andrea: DON'T GIVE ME THAT RUBBISH!!!! Even if you had no clue, what in the right mind would make you think this psycho monster can ever live another day? The lives he's hurt and made suffer, the chaos he's caused in the city, the harm he can create. And you decide that locking him up with do a think even though he keeps getting out, and doing the same thing?! WHY BRUCE!? Batman: Because even if I did, I fear that there's no turning back. Once I kill, I won't stop, and neither will you. And after this: Joker wakes from his knock-out and say, "Hahahaha, how perfect! The Cape Crusader and the wannabe impersonator coming at it! This is better than I excepted!". Andrea grabs Joker ready to finish him off, gives her goodbye to Bruce, until suddenly the building start to explode as Joker planned giving Joker his last laugh and Andrea disappears into her Phantasm fog. The film actually ends the same, with Batman being cleared of accusations, Alfred telling Bruce that no one could have saved Andrea, finding her locket, except instead of Bruce continuing his Batman crime-fighting duties in the last minute, we get Bruce shedding a tear as he sees the locket and Andrea on the ocean liner as well too with the flashback of the two after Bruce propose to her talking about their plans and dreams together and they two share a kiss again and the camera pulls forward as we look into the night sky. The End. While I did get this idea from Under The Red Hood (but this movie came before Red Hood) a bit, the reason why I think it would work here is because it gives more development to why who the Phantasm is is important and why Batman would be framed for crimes he didn't do. And it even gives a much more analysis in the differences between Bruce and Andrea and why their methods of justice differ. Also, I chose to end the movie like that because it's suppose to be more of a reminder to what Bruce and Andrea could have had if Bruce didn't choose to be a the Batman and give the audience the thought to if Bruce choose not to be Batman, could he have still protect Andrea. But that's just me, so if anyone has their opinions, please share and we'll see.
Holy, Holy Grail of Batman, Batman! This is definitely my favourite Baman movie ever! The "I didn't plan on being happy" scene and the first time he suits up are two of the greatest Batman moments in any medium. They give me chills whenever I think of them. Oh and don't get me started on that hauntingly beautiful soundtrack.
I’m surprised James Gunn didn’t put her in The Suicide Squad. He made that movie to showcase lesser known DC characters and is clearly a Batman TAS fan you’d think she’d fit right in especially since she’s worked for Waller in the Timmverse
I definitely like this film a lot and it has one of my favorite batman scenes of all time where Bruce is talking to his parents at their graves. But I don't think it's the best but definitely one of the best and one of my favorite batman films. I'm more of a team batcat guy but I appreciate the love story between Bruce and Andrea it's sad and realistic.
Damn Vee you are on fire the last while... Absolutely loving your run on Batman. I only seen this in my 20s, but as a kid who went to Batman age 5, who grew up with the animated series and had a ton of toys... I am sort of glad I didn't see it as a kid. This is probably the most 'adult' of the animated series. I recently re watched it and it really, really holds up. More so than the Freeze movie. I am disappointed that we didn't get a sort of proto Phantasm in Gotham. Ok we had Barnes with his mental clockwork blade arm and similar views on crime... But i think it's a missed opportunity. Considering how popular the main Batman villains are I don't think we ever will see Andrea or Phatasm in live action. It's a shame because the concept is SOOOOOO Batman and so bloody cinematic. Top stuff as always my bald brother from an American mother 👍 👍 👍
There is a TH-cam clip of Ebert and Roeper on TH-cam where they review Batman Forever and Ebert goes into a two minute tangent about how this movie is so much better then Batman Forever lol
I don't really understand why Vee Infuso praises the animated series's version of the BatCat relationship but calls the Bruce-Andrea relationship rushed. Batman and Catwoman were making out five seconds into their second meeting. Both are rushed, but the BatCat relationship was even worse in that regard.
True, BatCat isn't much of a realationship in this verse, if anything BrucexTalia is way more developed counting all the episodes and tie in comics. The fact that they didin't have that failure of a son in this continuity also helps since that really ruined their dynamic in the comics.
We shocked me after hearing that song years later, is that it was sung by Tia Carrere. The same actress who was in the movie True Lies and the show Relic Hunter. I never knew she could sing that beautifully. I think that’s how she started out first. That song hits hard after watching the movie. Probably one of the more beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
About the Joker's origin, I like how there are multiple takes of it across so many forms of media. He could be a mob boss, a circus clown, a comedian, or an ordinary citizen with anarchist views. I don't care if he has a name like Jack Napier, Arthur Fleck, or whatever, as long as that interpretation isn't the definitive version, I am okay with it.
This movie always gets me in the end I am honestly shocked everytime and too this day I still have the vhs and dvd and Blu-ray right next too all my Batman stuff
FYI Bruce and Andrea did date for a year after they first met in the graveyard both of them bonded over the fact that they lost their parents and Bruce even though he was committed to his training he sympathized with Andrea cuz she could understand him a little cuz they both stared the same pain I mean the guy never dated he only adopted his building at Playboy persona as a front so when he becomes Batman but Andrea was the first woman he really had feelings for.
The Phantasm is more or less based on the Grim Reaper (if I recall the title correctly), the anti-villain of the Batman: Year Two miniseries (a sequel to the faaaaar more famous Year One). The plot is largely the same, but the Phantasm's identity is a little more obviously her father, which is why those of us who watched the film in theaters were going, "yeah, that's obviously her dad back for revenge, he even has the same voice as her dad's actor!" (At the time coming off a hot run in a Mike Hammer television series adaptation.)
I enjoy this movie I've got it and would love to see more like this one. Kevin Conroy Mark Hamil both great actors perfect for the rolls in these movies they are enjoyable there are two games Batman Arkham Asylum and the other one Batman Arkham City I have both these games as well they are dark I play them alot. so if Hamil and Conroy should ever get this message thank you to them for the memories we fans love always.
It's too bad you don't like the fact that the Joker works for the Mob. His scenes literally had the audience in tears when I saw this in the theater. After he shoots up the singing robots in his first scene. The audience roared out in applause and every scene he had was just brilliant
Even though I obviously love this film beyond all other Batman films, I must say I respect your points and yes definitely read the recent Tom King Batman/Catwoman run. It was amazing! Thanks Vee, you're the best and Holy Holy Grail of Batman Batman :)

Holy Holy Grail of Batman, Batman! I would love to see a video on the series. I just rewatched this movie for the first time in ten years after finishing the Long Halloween series, this movie still holds up well.
b4 it came out back in the day, they had a special where they went behind the scenes explaining the music score, cgi city scape, and not to mention the sound track and a list actors while explaining the story without spoilers. The cartoon series was a great deal making this movie a giant back then as well. The marketing was something you had to experience back then as a kid to understand the greatness. DC back then had never made cartoon movies b4 on this scale, its the first of its kind. Compare to these new cartoon movies it doesnt seem as special but still holds up.
Andrea appears in the tie in comic book to BTAS season 3 AKA Batman and Robin Aventures in Annual 1 and she's also in the tie in comic book to JL "The Batman Adventures Vol 2" in the black mask arc
I watched it for the first time on dvd (from the library) few years ago and I thought it was amazing and felt it was best animated Batman movie from Batman the animated series because it was a theatrical movie the others are Batman vs Dracula, Batman Under The Red Hood, Batman, Batman Returns, etc. True, this movie didn't get much to any promotion and opened on Christmas day and no one went to see and over the years people still say it is since Batman and Batman Returns.
The big difference between this Joker's "mobster" backstory and the live action one is that the 1989 Joker is still the same mob boss that he was even after his transformation, turning into the Joker didin't change much honestly, while this Joker went from a random mob grunt to a completely different person, a Joker much closer to what the comics' depiction shows us, a guy who just wants to create chaos and have fun with his "jokes". He's not STILL a mobster, he WAS a mobster.
It's a very, very good movie with the criminally underrated Dana Delany spot on as Andrea. And of course Mark Hamill is on fleek as the Joker. And a special shout out to Abe "Fish" Vigoda.
GREAT Movie. And I feel like you have a more thorough pool of knowledge to source your opinion on, but this sounded fair. I remember re-discovering this movie in the Navy due to there being an awesome AMV of it with The Unforgiven. Oh, and HOLY HOLY GRAIL OF BATMAN, BATMAN
HOLY HOLY GRAIL OF BATMAN, BATMAN and I gotta say man considering it's my profile pic...I agree lol especially after all the other Batmen that have left the cave it's DEFINITELY my top 3 now
There’s a really good couple issue Batman beyond universe story with Phantasm in it from years ago if anyone wants to check it out. I believe it’s Batman beyond universe 13-15?
"Because the movie makes it painfully obvious that the Phantasm is Andrea" Ehm... no? I mean, sure, of course it will be the guy you spent more time with, it's always the guy you spend more screentime with, but you can't say that when Phantasm and Andrea's father have the same voice actors, making you think it's actually Andrea's father, before you get to know of his death.
Yeah. Tbh, I didn't see it coming the first time I watched the movie. I mean it's probably more obvious to an older and/or savvier viewer, but definitely not to the audience it was marketed towards. And even for an older audience, I thought it was handled really well, especially with the VA route.
Now that you mentioned it at the start of the vid I enjoyed the long Halloween and coincidentally I just watched mask of the phantasm last night after almost 17 years (damn feel old lol I’m 24) Good, a great movie been enjoying lots of theses animated stories Even somewhat liked Hush loool
The story in this movie was originally supposed to take place over several episodes of Batman the animated series more than halfway of completing this project Batman the animated series was cancelled so makers of this project had no choice but to make it into an animated film.
Also I agree with Vee, this is good, but not my favorite, nor the best(in my opinion). I'm sure Vee and I feel differently on those as well. Doesn't take anything away from this movie, it is still one of the tops. When I comes to Batman movies.
I still The Dark Knight is still the best Batman Movie overall!! Mask of the Phantasm is my third best Batman film It's between Batman Begins and Tim Burton's Batman as my Second Favourite Batman Film.
I really like the part where Bruce pleads with the painting of his parents to abandon his life as Batman and be happy with this girl. It makes you think if Selina made Bruce choose between being Catwoman and Batman would he choose to be Bruce Wayne with Selina?
Tbf Joker originally was a pretty organized mobster with a clown theme. His early appearances were less chaotic and more like outlandishly elaborate like trying to copyright fish in Gotham because they have his smile or using Joker toxin to deter police investigation. He even took orders from Riddler and Penguin most of the time back when Riddler was actually the smartest guy in the gallery. I think he only started to change after the Dark Knight Returns line. Even in the '90s he was pretty involved with organized crime and was working with legit terrorists and Arab oil barons.
WAIT A MINUTE. I have the box set of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. I don't remember an episode or even a scene with the Phantasm? Does anyone know which episode it is?
Actually there was four, don't want to be one of those nerds but there was two comic book appearances, one and a sequel to the Phantasm that takes place around the time of the animated series, then the other one that takes place in the new Batman adventures
The scene with Bruce pleading to his parents in the rain is one of my favorite Batman scenes even to this day.

The way he apologizes for being happy really tears you apart.. can't agree more..

So in the final climax where Joker and Andrea fight, Andrea is able to knock Joker out and is about to kill him but Bruce interferes and tries to stop Andrea but Andrea is having none of it and fights Bruce leading to an argument like this:
Andrea/Phantasm: Face it Bruce, I'm doing what The Dark Knight they call justice fails to do!
That was great! Well written and I completely agree that they should have built on this relationship more and given the phantasm more of a purpose.
Seems unfair that the Phantasm didn't get the same popularity as Harley Quinn. He/She totally deserves it.
I think the only reason is that he/she was only in this movie and nothing else. Not even the comics, until just recently
She had more potential than Sin Tzu and even he appeared twice .
I’m surprised James Gunn didn’t put her in The Suicide Squad. He made that movie to showcase lesser known DC characters and is clearly a Batman TAS fan you’d think she’d fit right in especially since she’s worked for Waller in the Timmverse
As well as Red Claw also
Why are you comparing her popularity with harley quinn they're completely different characters
Can't wait till Vee covers Batman vs Dracula.
This movie and batman beyond movie are my favorite animated movies
I love Mask of The Phantasm so much.
Vee Infuso : IS THIS THE BEST BATMAN MOVIE?
Viewers : YOU BET IT IS 👍👍😘😘
It’s really not
@@BK-sh2pn it’s the best animated Batman movie tho
I actually think this movie takes a good few elements from batman year two
That’s because it does.
Fear the Reaper?
Saw it in 93 in theaters when I was 9, and I still love it to this day.
Disagree, but I am a bit biased to BatCat
Can’t agree with you on that one
True, BatCat isn't much of a realationship in this verse, if anything BrucexTalia is way more developed counting all the episodes and tie in comics.
The fact that they didin't have that failure of a son in this continuity also helps since that really ruined their dynamic in the comics.
Damn end credits song made me tear up. lol This movie is straight up tragic.
Prior to Chris Nolan coming along, I would absolutely say yes, that Mask of the Phantasm was Batman's best. No disrespect to Burton and Keaton.
Even if it's not the best Batman movie it's definitely one they tried to make the best.
Worthy of being on Cinemas.
@@lewisaino agreed
Holy holy Grail of Batman, Batman
The Phantasm is more or less based on the Grim Reaper (if I recall the title correctly), the anti-villain of the Batman: Year Two miniseries (a sequel to the faaaaar more famous Year One). The plot is largely the same, but the Phantasm's identity is a little more obviously her father, which is why those of us who watched the film in theaters were going, "yeah, that's obviously her dad back for revenge, he even has the same voice as her dad's actor!" (At the time coming off a hot run in a Mike Hammer television series adaptation.)
HOLY HOLY GRAIL OF BATMAN, BATMAN! Heart of Ice is the GREATEST Batman episode from the Animated Series.
Before Batman begins it was the only Batman movie about Batman. A character story for Batman. The best
I'm early?! On a Vee Infuso video..Well damn I guess I am quite the lucky bastard. Lucky me.
Vee infusio: is this the best Batman movie?
Me: yes, yes it is
Watched this yesterday and immediately searched for a review from vee and I didn't find one. After 12 hours of sadness I got it
I enjoy this movie I've got it and would love to see more like this one.
This film can hold claim to having the best Joker laugh (You know the one)
This guy always uploads before my study hall are you serious
It's too bad you don't like the fact that the Joker works for the Mob. His scenes literally had the audience in tears when I saw this in the theater. After he shoots up the singing robots in his first scene. The audience roared out in applause and every scene he had was just brilliant
Review Batman vs Dracula. It's my favorite Batman animated movie.
Even though I obviously love this film beyond all other Batman films, I must say I respect your points and yes definitely read the recent Tom King Batman/Catwoman run. It was amazing! Thanks Vee, you're the best and Holy Holy Grail of Batman Batman :)
Batman: Year One Batman: The Long Halloween Catwoman: When In Rome Batman: Dark Victory Robin: Year One Batgirl: Year One Batman: Three Jokers Batman: Arkham Unhinged Batman: Bloodstorm Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham
"If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice" -Joker to Batman in The killing joke
BvS warehouse fight scene with Batman is the best Batman fight scene of any Batman movie… by far.
gotta say that kiddy pool analogy made me bust a gut laughing........... i'm even laughing while writing this comment.
I'm a simple man. I see my most favorite youtuber talking about Phantasm, I click the like button. Also, "Holy, Holy Grail of Batman, Batman!"

Holy Holy Grail of Batman Batman! MAKE IT VEE! MAKE IT NOW!!!😫
Holy Holy Grail of Batman, Batman!
The marketing was something you had to experience back then as a kid to understand
the greatness.
I agree with you on your opinion all tha way and I love Batman myself 💯💯💯
i love this movie
also the dark knight is in my list of best batman projects easily
No mention of the actual best Batman movie. Which is The Lego Batman Movie
Cause it's not
I like that this movie was included in the Batman the animated series Blu Ray set.
I wouldn’t say Joker even worked with Sal Valeska, he just murdered him as soon as Sal seemed somewhat comfortable with him
I remember being in love with this movie when I was a kid
Best Batman TH-cam channel
It's indeed the best Batman movie. The only one to make me cry.
1.Mask of Phantasm
2.Batman Beyond Return of joker
3.Batman Under the Redhood
Are my top three..
Holy, Holy Grail of Batman, Batman! Bring on the animated series retrospective!!!
Yes. This is the best Batman movie of all time
GREAT Movie.
Holy, holy grail of Batman! Rewatching BTAS currently. I can never get enough
Vee much love to all the cameos. Kevin Conroy bud, wow wow wow. Keep doing all you do SIJW.
Still cant believe Mark Hamill has not ever been cast as a live action Joker
Mask of the Phantasm should be made into live action. Like a one to one but where they expand on lots of stuff like Andrea and Bruce.
HOLY HOLY GRAIL OF BATMAN, BATMAN and I gotta say man considering it's my profile pic...I agree lol especially after all the other Batmen that have left the cave it's DEFINITELY my top 3 now
Never saw this one. Phantasm is hot. Holy holy grail of Batman
I enjoy all the classic animated batman movies I wish I still had this one on VHS but DVD is fine
There’s a really good couple issue Batman beyond universe story with Phantasm in it from years ago if anyone wants to check it out. I believe it’s Batman beyond universe 13-15?
"Because the movie makes it painfully obvious that the Phantasm is Andrea"
Ehm...
@@JJRegal4 Exactly
Holy holy holy Grail of Batman Batman
YO BRUCE DOING "Jiujitsu" was hilarious
Now that you mentioned it at the start of the vid
I enjoyed the long Halloween and coincidentally I just watched mask of the phantasm last night after almost 17 years (damn feel old lol I’m 24)
Good, a great movie been enjoying lots of theses animated stories
Even somewhat liked Hush loool
The story in this movie was originally supposed to take place over several episodes of Batman the animated series more than halfway of completing this project Batman the animated series was cancelled so makers of this project had no choice but to make it into an animated film.
I agree
holy holy grail of Batman Batman
My personal favorite Batman movie ever will forever be Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero
Yes, everything else is sacrilege against our lord and savior Batman
i love batman mask of the phantasm its fantastic
One of my favorite Batman movies of all time… like damn.
Holy Holy Grail of Batman Batman 🦇🦇🦇🦇
Another great video!
The phantasm is basically a mix of Rachel and red hood before these characters were even made.
I really like the part where Bruce pleads with the painting of his parents to abandon his life as Batman and be happy with this girl. It makes you think if Selina made Bruce choose between being Catwoman and Batman would he choose to be Bruce Wayne with Selina?
Holy Holy Grail of Batman, Batman!
"Holy Holy Grail Batman of Batman, Batman!"
Holy Holy grail of Batman Batman
Actually there was four, don't want to be one of those nerds but there was two comic book appearances, one and a sequel to the Phantasm that takes place around the time of the animated series, then the other one that takes place in the new Batman adventures
