      Like an automatic sniper team. I'm reminded of Afghanistan footage of a fire team on a mountaintop, attempting to engage targets at distances well outside their weapon's capabilities. In those situations a weapon like this would have benefited them greatly. Hard to believe it weighs less than an M240L, though ammunition weight and amount would be a concern.

    • @joshuabressel1280
      @joshuabressel1280 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@AnonEMus-cp2mn yeah, but with the optic Sig created, that uses an optic+IR laser rangefinder, with a 2200 meter range, that auto corrects for range, allowing soldiers to get more accurate first round(or first burst) hits, making the system more accurate. Between the greater accuracy, the greater lethality, and the weight reduction of the hybrid brass/steel ammo, it helps close the gap a bit, between 7.62 and .338. Also, the suppressor masks the shooting signature, allowing the gun team to fire with less chance of taking return fire, especially over distance and at night, allowing them more freedom of movement, which equals greater accuracy, and higher hit probability, requiring fewer rounds. Also, the weight savings of the gun, itself, helps mitigate the heavier ammo. Don't JUST look at this as a M-240 with heavier ammo, look at it as a system with equivalent range, and near power to the M-2, at 25% of the weight, with ammo that weights 30% as much! I know a LOT of guys right now, still in 2-75(where I served, before reclassing from Infantry Sniper to Special Operations Combat Medic), and in USASOC, who are using this, right now, who couldn't be happier with it! A few guys have even been putting on 6xACOGs, with RMRs on top, to take advantage of the INSANE range! One thing they DON'T mention, is that the top optic rail, unlike the previous MGs, is NOT attached to the feed tray cover(the feed tray opens in FRONT of the optic rail, but the 2 do NOT TOUCH), meaning you have a rock solid zero on your optic, and you are able to get really impressive accuracy out of this guy!

      I like the General Dynamics rifle and suppressor choice due to the longer barrel taking advantage of the 6.5 without compromising on overall length, but SIG definitely has the advantage in its belt-fed options with recoil-midigation designs. The 6.5 ammo is also the most feasible to switch to (metal casings also absorb heat from the chamber, something polymer can't do when its the most prone to overheating).

    • @joshuabressel1280

      @@AnonEMus-cp2mn the Sig NGSW is in 6.8mm not 6.5mm. Also, the steel based brass cased ammo would revolutionize the long range shooting industry. I think Sig is the way to go. That said, this is NOT the contender for the NGSW. This is the possible M240 replacement. The NGSW is the M249 and M4/M16 replacement program.

      @@Clockwork0nions at least the LMG contract, the NGSW contract is still open, though Sig is DEFINITELY the front runner. They recently won the contract for the SOCOM SURG program, which was not highly publicized. It was a submission for an integrally suppressed upper for the M4. Sig's entry was a MCX Virtus upper, in FDE, with a direct thread can, with a screw on basketweave heat shield.even though, unlike the other uppers, it wasn't truly an integrally suppressed upper, because the upper was tuned to run with the can, and it was shielded, with a taper mount system, it got picked up. In my opinion, some of the other systems were better.....but the Sig is decent. With the win on the MHS, LMG, and SURG, they are the favored pony in the NGSW race. Also, their 6.8mm brass/steel hybrid cartridge is the LEAST radical new cartridge design, and with the abject failure of polymer cased ammo in 2006(the new stuff is MUCH better, but the military tends to remain skeptical of things, even after they have been fixed), I think that that is what they will go with, ESPECIALLY since it can be produced by almost any ammunition manufacturer, meaning that they can accept multiple source bids, rather than single source fulfilment contracts. I was surprised, with the cozy relationship Sig has with the DoD, lately, that the MPX didn't win the SMG competition for the Army. The APC-9 is the Ferrari of subguns, though, I think the B&T TP9 might've been a more compact, better choice, for the stated role. Anyhow, I've talked to a lot of my buddies, still in 2-75, and elsewhere in USASOC, and they LOVE the M-338. They especially love the new sight that rapidly corrects for range, to give you a shooting solution, and improve first round hit probability. A few of my buddies have said that the accuracy is almost sniper rifle like! It's also about the same weight as a M-249(though the ammo is still much heavier), so carrying it is WAAAAY easier than the M-240B, and easier even than the M-240L! It's about comparable to the Mk-48, but far more reliable, robust, and accurate, so despite the ammo being heavier even than 7.62 NATO, the fire you put down is more effective and accurate, especially in conjunction with the sighting system Sig developed for it. I think this LMG blurs the lines between a LMG, a SAW, and a DMR, and it gives troops in the field a LOT more options, especially when engaging at long ranges.

    The SIG rifle offering needs to use the same action as this machine gun. Similar to the relationship between the M-249 SAW and the SCAR mk.16L That would take care of the recoil issues with the 6.8 round without having to depend on the smuzzle which is going to be prone to overheating during sustained automatic fire. The MG 68 is the clear winner for LMG but the MCX Spear needs to use the same action in order to be reliable and effective.

    This machine gun is just a cool toy. When there are no vehicles or in places that vehicles cannot reach, it’s good for nothing. More than 90% of the time, there are no vehicles or vehicles cannot reach the battlefield. No soldier could run 100 meters cross-country carrying this toy.

    What do you people think of a bullpup assault rifle that has the a built suppressor, from almost beginning of the barrel? It would be even quite than the VSS. It would be electrical blowback, leaving no eating sound out the ejection port; it would eject a moment after the shot when the setting was applied. Customisable, in 556, 7.62x54, and a 45 acp SMG version, to be even more quiet. Built of carbon fiber, a crome inner barrel, and a high grade Polymer as the rest of the build.

    • @greenman8060
      @greenman8060 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you're talking about General Dynamics? They were never getting the bid. Bull-pups would be too hard to integrate into a military used to an M4 platform. The polymer case would have a chance of over-heating when firing rapidly. The ejector is right at the butt of the weapon so any left handed shooter would get polymer flung at their head. Just too many design flaws.

    • @bravo-six1941
      @bravo-six1941 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean brass not polymer?

    • @bravo-six1941
      @bravo-six1941 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would have a carbon fiber inner body, maybe even only it. I'm just taking advantage of the longer barrel length, for the suppressor. It would only be a special purpose rifle, as it would be expensive, and sepicailized. I not stupid enough to make it for everything. Whenever the Army (The other branches don't do the same mistake as much) tries to make something do everything, it fails. That's the opposite of what this is doing
