Really great advice here. I've been shooting shows for years now, and just started making money taking concert photos. It's not nearly enough to quit my day job yet, but still, I'm stoked to be getting paid to shoot local shows and love that I'm having more opportunities arise every week.

The next question would be how do you proceed if the guy you talked for free access to the event wants you to participate as a photographer at the next festival, do you go again for free? Ask for the correct amount of money for the festival? Can he complain that he helped you in the beginning?
You're very welcome Paul! I suppose it all depends on how you feel about your skillset & portfolio. Are you ready to fulfill a paid gig for an artist? Are you able to wow management teams with your past work/Portfolio? If the answer is yes to both of those questions, I would simply drop your rate in the conversation you're having about the next festival. Don't let them expect to get free work out of you forever. If they say they don't have a budget, then you move on to the next opportunity that sees the value in working with you! Hope this helps!

I’ve never used a gimbal for any of my video work, it’s all been handheld or attached to a monopod or gorillapod. That said, if it’s for aftermovie work, or an official recap of sorts, a gimbal may be important to have!

@@MindofMeech Yeah! I use a Sirui Monopod and it's treated me well on every shoot I've brought it on. I have my camera up pretty high while I use a remote shutter to hit record or snap a photo. It also helps that my camera (Sony A7R III) has a screen that tilts down, so I can see what the camera sees by looking up and balance everything out. I haven’t definitely delivered 1080p footage in the past, but these days I’m sure the standard is now 4K video! But sometimes it’s really difficult to tell which resolution the footage was shot in. As long as it looks good I’m sure you’ll be fine. As far as the MacBook, I’m fighting for my life using a 2016 MacBook Pro. Every time I boot Lightroom it uses so much energy that my laptop turns into a fan. I can’t imagine the 2013 MacBook is easier to use due to it being at least a generation or two older. Work with what you have and grow/upgrade from there! 💪🏽
Hi, I told an artist I would shoot the concert for free, even though she had already invited me to shoot at her concert and seem surprised I said I wouldn't charge. I feel like an idiot. I don't want to get stuck shooting for free all the time so how should I go about telling her the next one won't be free (if there is a next one)
I’m dropping a video on concert photography rates very shortly (maybe even tomorrow!) and I have a segment in the video where I discuss this. You are most definitely worthy of getting paid what you think you’re worth! Next time they reach out to you, simply position yourself accordingly and let them know what your new rate is and negotiate if you have to 😊

You can still succeed with a crop sensor camera! I started out with a Nikon D5300 before eventually upgrading. Just try to keep your ISO as low possible whenever you can :)

Generally venues won’t have that information! You need to find artist manager’s contact information on the artist’s Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, or on official management roster websites. That’s where I’ve found them 99% of the time!

Great advice! Is 1080p enough for video? I was looking at a used Canon 6D. Also, would a 2013 retina macbook pro be enough for editing?
