I really appreciate this video. It completely sold me on the Arrma 8S Kraton instead. I have a MAXX, and this sounds like a more expensive version of the same issues. This is not a snarky Arrma guy comment, but a sincere thank you for saving me $1,000 only to have to replace all of the most expensive parts. I’m done with Traxxas.
One thing i would recomend is keep your driveline clean and greased well and the esc is good to go. I would say most of the esc problems came from drag in dirty or damaged bearings.
I swapped to 50wt shock oil in the rear and added some preload to the front. Stays flatter under full throttle and makes holding wheelies wayyy easier. Also stops traction roll from being such an issue
Get one you will never look back 😂 it all depends on how you drive, I have 3 x-maxx’s and if it was a case to change one thing it would be the servo. Your right to research first brother 🤙🏽
I’ve had a few other RC’s. Xmaxx by far is the best out there. Had mine 5 years. No damage yet. Soaked all plastics in WD-40 and it keeps on going and going and going. Really a nice surprise. I’ve not had to spend extra time or money on it. It is dependable and strong. Very fun to drive. The people who complain are out to destroy them. I love mine.
For all the people out there, who want to destroy your vehicle, yes, you can do all these upgrades and spend another $400 - $500. But, this is in my opinion is the most well built, well engineered, most durable you will find on the market today. There is simply nothing else that compares. If you respect the vehicle, and don’t abuse it beyond its capability, it will last many years without breakage. I’ve had many different vehicles. I’ve had this one four years without breaking it once. I cannot say that about the others. Every time I went out with the other ones, they were guaranteed to break even with mild abuse. But then again, I am not out to destroy them but, I will do 8 - 10 foot vertical drops and 20 foot jumps regularly without fear of damaging this one. For those people who want to get crazy with it, go for it. Not my style and, it is just more expense and downtime. Waiting for parts and repair. The only thing I did upgrade, which I think it really needs is a better servo saver. The one it comes with is little too weak. Everything else in this video, it’s just a waste of money. Respect it, and it won’t cost you a dime further. And, no, I do not work for Traxxas. It is the best damn vehicle made. I love mine. Best I’ve ever had. It’ll take a beating. Just don’t do the 20 to 30 foot vertical jumps like you see in the videos. And, don’t run it at top speed into a wall. Nothing can withstand that kind of torture for long. Oh, another thing I did was soak it down with WD-40. That trick really does work to make it even more break resistant. All vehicles for that matter. And, yes the body of it does pop off occasionally….usually in a cart wheel situation or if the front end hits something dead- on pretty hard. I’ve never had to replace the A-arms either even when clipping a front tire on something at about 30 - 40 mph. That’s where the WD-40 works best I think along with the shock attachment points. Never broke one of those either. Overall, the Xmaxx is and always will be my go to vehicle.

The body is a weak spot. The plastic is thin and weak and it pops off a lot. Not once did I have issues with my tires because of the way they were made. Been through 1 set amd that was my fault. Non vented tires don't like water too much.🤣 The stock 2085 servo in mine never failed me even after 2 years but I did upgrade to the 2085X because it was becoming weak. The stock ESC - 8S Garbage. Get a MAX6, and watch your gearing. The motor fans... Trash and not necessary if you know how to gear it right. Front arms breaking was because of cold and my bad driving. Flipping over can be minimalized by suspension adjustment, and throttle control. The stock battery trays definitely need a different solution. The strap idea is a good idea. Best recommendation I suggest is drive it until it breaks then upgrade as you go! Have fun, enjoy, and happy RCing everyone. And thank you for another great video!!!
Awesome info. For a thousand dollars these issues should not exist in the first place imo. But there has to be an upgrade available i guess. Smaller bashers can be bought without needing any upgrading or worry about tires blowing out or any other breakage.
This is not meant the author, I really like his insights and his helpful videos so much. I have never seen the full stop rollover. I self-roll as I am better than Traxxas I think because I have eyes+ears, by using gas forward, no quick movements, you only lose inertia that way. I haven't owned an RC since the 90's IDK why people can say a car with this many flaws is great. Being so flawed is the antithesis of great. When I had an LXT, I couldn't break the thing. I jumped it off of 20 foot jumps, completely cased the landing and sent it doing carthweels down the hill. Flipped the thing back over and kept on going. That was a great RC. Anything that requires this many things to fix for it to be great is copium. Tires should not be so cheap that they rip to shreds. The prices on some of those upgrades, yikes. Spend the extra hundreds of dollars on something that will not require a bunch of upgrades. You could buy a Losi for half the price of the X Max and not have to upgrade anything. What the hell happened to the RC community? Traxxas was known to be garbage all the way back in the 90's. Losi was killing them in every way.
Let me make something very clear, the xmaxx is absolutely awesome. It’s big, it’s tough and it’s bloody powerful! However, and this is a mistake a lot of people make and don’t realise until they have have bought the thing, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE TO DRIVE IT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL. If you don’t, then this isn’t the truck for you, your after either the Maxx or the hoss
Pull it out of the box, install your batteries and take it for a blast. Enjoy your new earth shaking R/C monster truck. If you are back yard bashing and hitting some small to moderate ramps, don’t even worry about having to upgrade anything. The motor and esc take a beating. Eventually you WILL break something & that is when you decide if you want upgrades or just replace with factory parts. I agree that the tires could have & should have been MUCH better. RPM rear hub carriers are a smart upgrade with the RPM hinge pins. But again, not absolutely necessary coming out of the gate. Steering servo? Yea it’s slow, but good until you damage it. A lot of the suggestions/opinions can be interpreted as things that you should or have to do or your X-Maxx is inferior. You spent $1000.00 bucks on one of the sickest R/C trucks ever produced, it’s nothing short of an R/C legend. Drive it like ya stole it and twek as needed.
My understanding is the new xmaxx already has larger bearings in the rear hubs. I understand the hinge pins but is there some other reason for rear rpm hubs?
Just bought a Maxx v2 after several years away from the hobby. I have beat the absolute shit out of it minus sending it “to the moon” and it has held up perfectly so far. Full speed end-over-end cartwheels, somersaults, etc. on grass, dirt, gravel, and concrete. The body is already a bit beat up and some scuffs and things on the plastic bits but everything still works perfectly. Changed shock oil to 70wt, put heavy springs on the rear and moved stock rear springs to the front. That’s it. Otherwise it’s just like it came out of the box. Now I just need to keep those wheelies down 😂
I've had my Xmaxx for 4 years and still has the original electronics, including the servo. I bought the Proline Badlands when I bought the Xmaxx. Never used the stock tires.
I’ve had my Xmax for 7 years. I’ve run it probably 500 times on the most rough terrain possible. I’ve literally beaten the snot out of it and it continues to beg for more. It has never broken and it still runs like the day I took it out of the box. It is quite an impressive machine. But then again, I never ran it in freezing temperatures and it never came into contact with water either.
great video hands down the truck is insane iv upgraded the servo and iv got a full set of hd are sitting hear plus a chassis brace next will be a max 6 esc some hinge pins for the arms and i think she will be all good no need to upgrade much else the truck is a blast o ye and maybe tyres later on key is not to be so aggressive on the throttle
Only thing I have broken on mine is one lower front suspension arm and some body damage. Other than that my pinion set screw keeps coming lose, I'm about to go with some red loctite.
@RC Review I have not blown the tires, but I have ripped the tires off the wheels and then superglued them back on a few times. I am running on 8s. Only one time (the first time) I drove it, did the pinion stay on. I was gentle on it that time, in comparison to the others. I just cleaned the pinion and set screw and put blue loctite on it and waiting for it to set. If that doesn't hold, it's red loctite for me.
Near 4 years on mine and still have the stock servo, set the end points when you get one. I bought the bluetooth link and adjusted the easier way. One day I'll upgrade or just get the metal gears and rebuild it. Max 6 is a definite. wakes the truck up nicely and with 20/50 hardened steel gears makes the truck drive much better. 50wt shock oil all round seems to be the sweet spot for me for mid level bashing and handling. Tyres.. well.. I've blown a few but still use the stockies as they are much lighter than badlands so less stress on the drive train and never use self righting... hard on gears and tyres. The new V3 X-Maxxes now have the oversized bearings on the front and rear hubs so no need to get RPM hubs anymore. I ordered them and fitted them to mine... no more problems. Other than that, really it's an Epic RC that always makes me smile like an idiot lol. Way too much fun.
Where did you mention how to stop the xmaxx from wheeling so much. I remember you said something about changing oils in the diffs. Was front center and rear or something different
I'd say the servo the hub bearings, the ring and pinion, and the tires. Those are the only thing things that I have had to replace after 3 years and I launch mine off 40ft tailings piles.
To upgrade the servo did you need to modify anything? I’ve gone through several 2085X and they are trash. Very light use and they last maybe 10 to 20 hours if that
My X-Maxx has a unique problem. It won’t steer, but if i turn the wheels away from center, turn it on, and push on the wheels the servo will center and hold the wheels there as if it works fine. TSM won’t automatically steer and I confirmed that the steering on the transmitter works by switching around receiver wires. What does this sound like to you? If i do need a new servo, how does the Perfect Pass Monster sound? edit: If and when my ESC burns out, does the max6 esc need a higher C count than traxxas batteries (25c)? I really dont want to have to buy new batteries.
So far, I've been lucky with mine. I did tweak the center shaft, but straightened it out. Did blow a tire, but my fault. Heavier fluids in the diffs will keep them from unloading as much, and going up 10w in the rear shocks helps tremendously. Also, not expecting it to survive absolute insane expectations is a big thing. " stupid truck broke after I jumped it off an overpass and it was hit by 11 real cars. What junk". Those people give RC's a bad rap. Enjoy and have fun, but be realistic about what anything can handle- or expect the consequences. 🤷♂️
I'm sorry the tire blew and you blame yourself and you think it's people complaining about nothing? So are the tires prone to blowing, is the steering servo too weak, do the front arms break are the fluids incorrect for it or is it all the users fault? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I've got some land for sale, it's all good apart from the land mines but if you avoid them it's good and your fault if you don't. 🤣🤣🤡🤡
@@RCReviewChannel How is it good advice to accept a weak servo, the wrong fluid, weak front arms a suspect ESC and a driveshaft prone to bending? If it wasn't RC I would think you accepted money to say it was good, but sadly RC is full of people accepting bad and even praising them for only requiring a few changes from new. 😵💫😵💫
@@dalelc43 I guess I've had a few minor issues so far but for what it is the few minor changes are really nothing to massive and simple to do it's a great rc car insanely fun and way better then the other options.
I come to you for advice. If you had a choice, would you buy the element ecto or axial Capra 4 wheel steer? I know they are very different, but for quality and performance what would be your choice? Thank you from your long time subscriber!
2 more weakness you need to add base on my experience with my xmaxx 8s are The xmaxx body need the washer , cause when you basing, the screw in the body can goes thru the body The stock pinion and spur gear are junk , always break especially if we using 18/46 gearing by traxxas pin gear mesh, it will always break. I have to get the hot raing gear then this problem stop.
I thought for sure the pinion coming loose was going to be one of the top 6. I fought that issue with mine for the longest time. Seems like there are some that have the issue more than others
We have a 6s and whenever we switch it to 70/30 it gets stuck going backwards at maximum speed and it’s really scary and has injured me several times. How to fix?
I just ordered 60wt shock oil for mine only in the rear the front is stock would that be fine? I looked it up and it said the stock shocks have 50wt in them
Yeah any tips I have a driveline issue currently slightly clicking under full load only on high traction surafces can't work out if it's diff or driveline completely it's bloody annoying the squeak is easy to fix but the click is worrying.
In Italia costa 1250 euro :piu o meno..pensi che così costoso valga una simile cifra?e poi spendere ancora per i pezzi di ricambio?grazie, ottimo video 5:14
You forgot the #1 problem And most annoying.. the pinion is made of paper and stock they are never tight enough. First thing you should do is change it to a better brand and use green or red loctite. Never will have to worry about it ever again. The x maxx strips out the pinion on the first ride usually if you didn’t swap it or tighten and loctite it
What are you people doing with these trucks??? I’ve had my Xmaxx for almost 5 years. I’ve broken a spur gear, blew one tires and blew out the rear hun carrier bearings. Other than the body being beat up, it still runs solid AF.
3 years in though not really testing it. 1 big crash mid air hit a solid wooden play ground post supporting swings. L arm lower, shock shaft bent, upper arm and steering jont all sorted fairly cheaply. I just noticed a broken corner of the front top section after 2 years.... Works great. Never a blow out, stock 8700 Traxx batteries are a disappointment in puffing so soon with rare use. No RPN oversized bearing mention?? ok fair enough, we can all be victims of YouLube the advertising agency profits people on here the more clicks. Good info thx. Nice it bucks the trend of what others claim is needed.
Have had mine since they came out and bashed the hell out of it. Only thing that broke was the front A arm after hitting a block of concrete hidden in the brush. No other issues. I must be lucky.
Tho only thing I complain about my 8s xmaxx is the body it comes out and broke really easy a body whit a little more thickness will be ideal in my opinion,,, other than that cero complaints I love my xmaxx
Although I didn't go with exactly the same upgrades (for example, I went with Castle, instead of Hobbywing, for the ESC & motor), I had...long ago...already covered all 7 upgrade points. As great as the X-MAXX is, even it can use some "help" to make it better. 🤙🏼 Unfortunately, I won't be taking it, or any of my vehicles, to Calabazas Park's BMX area anymore. Why? Let's just say, "So long SF Bay Area. Hello Las Vegas."
@@RCReviewChannel LOL. Honestly, I expected to make the move...I just didn't expect to be making it for at least another 12-14 years. But, family matter moved the date up considerably. That does NOT mean I'll be forever gone from the Bay Area, as the company I used to work for will occasionally fly me in to drive buses for major events (such as Google I/O).
The upgraded servo from traxxas still isnt good. the truck we have took a few nose dives and the servo quit, so now we gotta buy another one. Traxxas needs to stop making their cars proprietary, and used standard servo mounts and Electronics plugs so people have easier options. Its crazy to me the money they want for that truck and the electronics are terrible. it should have their upgraded steering servo to start with.
Depends on how you treat your rc mins had know issue as for the tyres i use fishing line just use a needle push it through the tread go all the way around the tyres once job done tyres don't bloon don't use plastic line it needs to be the string type as its way stronger i do all my trucks. Keep your rc clean after using it dont bash them and you won't need to keep buying shit.
Number one upgrade them to the better tyres Traxxas has recently come out with brand-new tyres that don’t break Do not use badlands they break as well do what I just said.
i blame the driver for the damage, this toy is for responsible people. drive carefuly and it should last much longer. great power, great responsibility :)
i mean sure, its made for endurance but it still gets damaged if you run it into a wall or if you launch it high into the air... you can be more or less gentle@@RCReviewChannel
For that kind of money, you would hope that it's built out of quality parts. So pay over a grand with no battery's, or charger, then dump another grand for upgraded parts and batteries?? No thanks.

I've had my Xmaxx for 4 years and still has the original electronics, including the servo. I bought the Proline Badlands when I bought the Xmaxx. Never used the stock tires.
That makes me feel better I just bought one yesterday and for that amount of money I didn't want to go out buying things for it already!
Rtr ready to replace. My friend lets me drive his max wide arm. Amazing powerful machine. Not a lot of broken parts. No skate parks
great video hands down the truck is insane iv upgraded the servo and iv got a full set of hd are sitting hear plus a chassis brace next will be a max 6 esc some hinge pins for the arms and i think she will be all good no need to upgrade much else the truck is a blast o ye and maybe tyres later on key is not to be so aggressive on the throttle
Thank you for this informative video , I plan to get one soon , now I can max out the fun and durability, love your videos , keep up the good work
Buy something not broken from new. 🤣🤣🤣🤣Why do people accept this?
change electricity except for motor and receiver ASAP....
Thanks for watching!
sorry off topic im a r/c noob just got bit by the trx4m bug wanted to uprade the servo what serevo do you recomend ?
thanks for all the great vids
The ligma servo is the best for the trx4m
Only thing I have broken on mine is one lower front suspension arm and some body damage. Other than that my pinion set screw keeps coming lose, I'm about to go with some red loctite.
Ooooh, red loctite! Scary. So you haven't blown the tires? 6s or 8s?
@RC Review I have not blown the tires, but I have ripped the tires off the wheels and then superglued them back on a few times. I am running on 8s. Only one time (the first time) I drove it, did the pinion stay on. I was gentle on it that time, in comparison to the others. I just cleaned the pinion and set screw and put blue loctite on it and waiting for it to set. If that doesn't hold, it's red loctite for me.
I just bought the same one few months ago. I have broken one a arm and blew a tire off the bead but that’s it. Fingers crossed
That's the normal course. Enjoy the awesome Xmaxx life.
That's a great testimonial right there.
Hi how about if i drive it in very sophisticated way not being very harsh on car will the servo will have same issue like burning
funny you posted this video, cause i've been looking at a lot of xmaxx's as of late thinking about getting one.
It's a good decision to get one. Can't go wrong and has good resale value too. Make sure to click on our amain link if you get one. alnk.to/2uDFXU8
Buy an Aarma instead of this piece of junk. Im not impressed with it at all.
Thanks for sharing 💪🏼
the rear hubs . you needs the over sized . and putting grease in you bearings as well.
To upgrade the servo did you need to modify anything? I’ve gone through several 2085X and they are trash. Very light use and they last maybe 10 to 20 hours if that
Great video 👏👏👍
Thanks for the video! I'm still debating whether to go with the xmaxx or the kraten 8s. Any thoughts?
I think Xmaxx. If you can get the Kraton 8s for less than $800, I would swing that way. Xmaxx is just more fun IMHO.
Xmaxx is more durable and replacement parts are cheaper. Metal chassis on the Arrma is guaranteed to bend almost immediately.
If steering works in other slots on your esc then it’s your esc.
@@papag5433 I said it doesn’t… plus what does the ESC have to do with it? it would be the receiver.
Will just changing the esc make the truck faster with stock motor
So far, I've been lucky with mine. I did tweak the center shaft, but straightened it out. Did blow a tire, but my fault.
Heavier fluids in the diffs will keep them from unloading as much, and going up 10w in the rear shocks helps tremendously. Also, not expecting it to survive absolute insane expectations is a big thing. " stupid truck broke after I jumped it off an overpass and it was hit by 11 real cars. What junk".
Those people give RC's a bad rap. Enjoy and have fun, but be realistic about what anything can handle- or expect the consequences. 🤷♂️
Very good advice there!!!!!
🤣🤣🏆
@@dalelc43 I guess I've had a few minor issues so far but for what it is the few minor changes are really nothing to massive and simple to do it's a great rc car insanely fun and way better then the other options.
I come to you for advice. If you had a choice, would you buy the element ecto or axial Capra 4 wheel steer? I know they are very different, but for quality and performance what would be your choice? Thank you from your long time subscriber!
I can confirm the tires fail out of the box. I ripped the tread off one about 20 mins to playing with it on dirt
2 more weakness you need to add base on my experience with my xmaxx 8s are
The xmaxx body need the washer , cause when you basing, the screw in the body can goes thru the body
The stock pinion and spur gear are junk , always break especially if we using 18/46 gearing by traxxas pin gear mesh, it will always break. I have to get the hot raing gear then this problem stop.
Good call!!!
Why is it that Dura Trax tires are discontinued?
Any advice on the older 6s one? Thinking of picking one up used for $450. Is it a good deal?
How do you make the hobbywing max6 esc a double plug?
I thought for sure the pinion coming loose was going to be one of the top 6. I fought that issue with mine for the longest time. Seems like there are some that have the issue more than others
Hey my xmaxx will cut out mid air and I have to wait like 2 second for it to come back it only with the throttle if I get a max6 will it fix it?
We have a 6s and whenever we switch it to 70/30 it gets stuck going backwards at maximum speed and it’s really scary and has injured me several times. How to fix?
I just ordered 60wt shock oil for mine only in the rear the front is stock would that be fine? I looked it up and it said the stock shocks have 50wt in them
You also forgot to mention the hinge pin retention on hard landing sucks. The pins like to fly out.
Great call!
I have noticed my rear tires are towed inwards...is this from the factory or if not how do I fix it..
Leave it. It's proper!
Whats a good aftermarket battery for longer run time?
So. In summary. Buy 1k truck. Spend another 1k to Change everything on it so you can run it lol got it
😂😂😂 i was about to say that
My Xmaxx has a stock servo and it's super strong and fast. I have not had any problems with it or the servo saver.
Is Xmaxx comes with a charnger and Battery?
No battery or charger must buy separately.
great video
you didn't talk about the very last thing showed?
So thank you for all the tips thats helpful
Thank you I will buy one shor
Soon
It can go in water????
Id say the number 1 problem is the weak pinion and spur gears, and meshing it correctly is hell. I gave up on it.
Great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you
Good video, good information
You forgot the #1 problem
And most annoying.. the pinion is made of paper and stock they are never tight enough.
Other than the body being beat up, it still runs solid AF.
what model of the protek servo is this?
I need to add the xmaxx to my stable. I think the SCX6 is first for me…after my vanquish kit is done. Good grief I am an addict.
We are your support group
I have a issue were my widemaxx keeps turning off does anyone know what this problem is or how to fix it?
Yeah mine makes noises that aren't so great works perfectly thought I bash moderately within reason sounds like a differential is gone on it.
I found that the best way to stop breaking xmaxx parts and save my bank account, is to just leave it on the shelf and do anything else.
Tho only thing I complain about my 8s xmaxx is the body it comes out and broke really easy a body whit a little more thickness will be ideal in my opinion,,, other than that cero complaints I love my xmaxx
Same here. Problem area
Agree with previous drive it like its meant to and they are great launch them 30 ft are more on concrete not so great can't blame traxxas.
Really a top truck, may be we use it a little more out of limits... But if it goes so fast.... It has not to brake.
Just a few minor flaws but a heart of gold.
Might buy one next week not 100% sure yet
into MTBs and RCs. man you have hobbies
Rrrrrright. Happy life fo sho.
I didn't read too much but i didn't see that the original xmaxx bed corners were not protected much and wore through
My laft wheel is suck on and I can't get it off
The pinion and spur gears tend to explode. Do a belt drive conversion.
Although I didn't go with exactly the same upgrades (for example, I went with Castle, instead of Hobbywing, for the ESC & motor), I had...long ago...already covered all 7 upgrade points. As great as the X-MAXX is, even it can use some "help" to make it better. 🤙🏼
Unfortunately, I won't be taking it, or any of my vehicles, to Calabazas Park's BMX area anymore. Why? Let's just say, "So long SF Bay Area. Hello Las Vegas."
Oh whuuuuuut? Vegas? Darn.
Great video. But I’d hate to spend an additional $700 on a $1000 vehicle not robust enough from factory
You completely missed the fact that the pinion/spur are made out of cardboard...
Not sure you know what basher rc car means
i mean sure, its made for endurance but it still gets damaged if you run it into a wall or if you launch it high into the air... you can be more or less gentle@@RCReviewChannel
For that kind of money, you would hope that it's built out of quality parts. So pay over a grand with no battery's, or charger, then dump another grand for upgraded parts and batteries?? No thanks.
Steve Webbe?
Putting tape inside the tires prevents them from expanding as much.
Well, maybe after the famous and powerful UDR the king of off road vehicles of all time. Everything is compared to the UDR and that is all they can do, but never equal the UDR.
$200 for tires,that much for a small vehicle😂😂😂
It’s not a small vehicle Mate 😂😂😂
Hobbywing max 5 hv is my choice 😊 dont do the wide max kit it breaks non stop
we don't forget the problems just steps you must take before upgrades still cheaper then a ARRMA an there bad designs
And the stock bearings.
Kevin stroys this machine.
$1000 plus another $1000 to make it worth owning...........got it
😭🤣🤣😭🤣😂😭😭😂🤣😭
