I have a question man. You say there's a bearing on the inside of the XMAXX pinion spur cover? I have a snap on edition with black body with ghost flames, mine doesn't have the bearing or a spot for the bearing to go.
Just a FYI. I purchased a XRT Ultimate 2 weeks ago and after watching your video I checked it out and to my dismay my bearing in the cover wasn't there. I looked inside the area and found nothing appeared to have fallen in so I contacted Traxxas to find out if I received a defective part. Come to find out they now machine an e clip to the outside of the pinion gear shaft eliminating the need for a bearing on the cover. The cover still has a spot for the bearing but no bearing now.
They come with pot metal cheesy gear stock The best is to get those washers you said and get the mod 1.5 pinion and spur that fits on the stock motor and cush drive.
I bought my XRT Saturday from another owner and at 6:29 this is exactly what happened to me today. I went out to see what it was like, ran it up/down the street 3 full laps and boom it would not move anymore. Opened and started turning them and the small one slid right off because the grub screw was not tight.
Gears strip on these vehicles because the motor and spur gear are not solidly mounted together. Most vehicles have the motor on the same mount as the center differential / spur gear which solidly positions them together. There's plastic chassis between the two on the X-Max and XRT. When that chassis flexes the mesh temporarily changes and causes the gears to strip. This is why some people never experience it while there's due. If you're doing a lot of jumping or crash a lot that flex is going to happen a lot more often. The solution to this is to run mod 1.5 gears. The larger teeth are much more forgiving to that flex and changes in mesh.
I Definitely would make a trip to the Sanford Hobbytown store one of these days and purchase a Traxxas XRT from you guise. I think I talked to your wife over the phone several months ago about the XRT and she said they have like 4 available. I wished they build another Hobbytown were I live in Melbourne, Fl. We used to have a Hobbytown in Melbourne that was open for like almost 20 years and closed up few years ago, bummer. I bought my Traxxas Xmaxx 6S in December 2016 at that store about few months before Traxxas released the 8S version. To this day I still have the Xmaxx. Now it is a 34lb heavy beast with bunch of aluminum upgrades from Vitavon parts, WFO parts, Pro line menace tires, Hobby Wing 56113 800KV motor and Max 5 esc. I'll be replacing the motor and esc with a Leopard 1300KV motor and the new Hobby Wing Max 5 Gen 2 esc. After that I am done with it and done what I have accomplish what I wanted to put on the truck and will move on to something different such as the Traxxas XRT.
Great informative Video, you guys must be very successful. Thank you again for teaching rather than just selling something. Its about the hobby and the Joy it brings us!
Thanks, bro. Just got my XRT the other day. I need all the tips I can get. I haven't tested it ye. Hopefully this weekend for sure. I had to sub for sure. Keep up the great content much appreciate it.
While these are all good points, if traxxas didn't use such low quality gears, most gear failures wouldn't be happening. I run mine with a hot racing spur, Robinson racing pinion, and deleted the pins to set my own mesh. No issue after that
So upgraded spur and pinion for Traxxas at, say about $75 on the most extreme end or like I don’t $100 + for a new chassis on a arrma not to upgrade the shaft on the arrma cause we all know those bend. Sooo ok
@@StevenYDG69 no argument!?! that’s cool I respect that appointment was just that different ways to skin a cat being brand loyal it’s fine, but as I found out in my life somewhere along the way, you’re gonna get disappointed when we are another by Cindy brand of any type of object
I appreciate this video. I just bought an XRT, used once. I'll have a good idea where to start with looking the truck over and getting it ready to run.
Thanks for the tips, I never knew about the gear cover bearing. I'm putting an 8s Kraton motor in my xmaxx. The d shape pinion hole and c-clip are a gear saver imo.
Arrma are my favourite tho :) i been in rc racing for round 17years at top level Arrma is no1 these day s anyway tho remove screws on any used new model and put bit of tread lock to be on the safe side pinion grub screw same thing put half inch double sided tape so its over each other under motor very tight start with say 4 layers then if no fit go down to 3 layers of double sided tape if you can on your model.Another thing that has to be done is remove shafts and there is 2 screws inside shaft hidden one holds shafts to diff and other at the end of shaft un screw tread lock an tighten down properly an leave 1 day to dry properly before using very important even on new Arrma s needs be done and clean hub s an bearing at same time so shafts rotate well
Good advice!!! I’ve learned the hard way when I got my XRT with my gears but finally got it all fixed so far! Just remember, you should put in the video, adjust the brakes on the Traxxas link to 40% too
14:18 Don’t even use the power tool to install at all. When putting those screws back in, with a hand tool, rotate the screw ccw first slowly, and feel for the screw to drop into the threads, which is picking up and starting into the existing threads, the tighten as usual. This will help avoid cutting new threads into the plastic.
Another thing if you are upgrading a basic model to brushless you need make sure you upgrade alloy motor mount and buy the thickest one you can say its an arrma 3s fit the 4s model mount as its thicker stronger
Really useful video, Thanks. Why not you grease the gears to avoid striping using vaseline Petroleum jelly. Also, since you have been all that time in RC, if you have to choose only one RC car / truck / truggy / udr.. which one you choose and which brand! Electric please.
Doubt this gets answered....I bought a used xrt 2 weeks ago. He said it might have an hour on it. I accidentally put it on learning mode 50% throttle for the first 2 days. Finally was thinking it didn't wheelie like in the parking lot when I watched him drive it and checked. Sure enough it was learning mode. Fixed that and was doing runs up my street. It got hot and slowed down several times for a few min then went back full speed after I let it cool. I think the radio was showing like 270 degrees.. I'm new. Raced nitro back in about 2000. A few min later on a speed run it locked up and broke a tooth on the pinion and messed up some on the spur. The local shop has the factory motor for 140 with my locked up motor as a core trade. They said they haven't heard of a motor locking up like that. Gonna take it with me and let them check the esc. Amazing channel
Sounds like the motor bearings failed. While not super common, I've seen this happen before a couple times. Your motor was definitely overheating due to the bearings seizing up. Traxxas has a lifetime warranty on their electronics for 50% off the retail price of the motor. Or you can rebuild yours using part #3492. Thanks for watching!
Wow wow wooooooowwww dude,, I have 4 and something years whit xmaxx and I never never had noticed that bearing the you’re talking about it , thanks for sharing this info bro,
hey you are very knowledgeable on these cars and I was wondering your opinions on the rear diff ring and pinion of the traxxas 1/16 e-revo. i picked one up with that stripped and fixed it and shimmed properly and haven't had issues since but only run on 2s. I've heard stock they don't handle 3s well. just wondering if this is similar to the xrt, i.e. user error, or weak design. i believe its improper repair and maintenance how about you?
I have one on 3s, It's mainly how you drive it. I would land jumps at full throttle and would always strip diffs. I don't really jump it anymore and it's been just fine

Great video! I just became a first time Xmaxx owner. I had no idea about the bearing in the gear box cover. That being said. I hear a lot of folks using mod 1.5 gears. Would that bearing inside the cover fit correctly when you put the cover back on? Also, since I am a new owner I wanted to ask if you could give me an email I could use for questions? Thank you for your time.
Owner’s manual? What’s a owner’s manual? Had a guy actually say that at the shop I work. I do recommend taking the grub screw out of the pinion and cleaning the threads of both the group and pinion with 91% alcohol then use orange thread lock. Since I’ve been doing that I haven’t had a pinion slip off.
By the way I didn't know there is a bearing under the gear cover for the XRT. I wander if the Xmaxx has the same I never really looked under the gear cover interesting?
Also keep up on your cush drives!!!!! That is the main reason for stripping gears!! They don't last long!! If you been throwing gears on only to strip soon after and haven't replaced your cush drive replace it or it's a lost cause!! 😎👍
Awesome video. well done. Curious if you know the newest part number for the gear cover? I have seen both 7787 and 7887. Also do you know if the bearing is included? I have the newest version of the X-MAXX 8S 77086-4. thanks for your time.
Nothing wrong with it from stock? Ran my brand new x maxx on 4s and no issues. 6s hit the throttle and crack broke a tooth off the spur. For an 8s rated truck with stock gearing and a wheelie bar it should be able to handle a burst of throttle of 6s on loose dirt. Really hoping I got a bad casting, speed gears are going in now until I can get the machined traxxas one.
Put the truck in training mode 50% speed and youll never break anything.....all my vehicles stay in training mode......and mint condition ...13 in my collection including nitro buggies...getya some😅
