Reminds me of working in the MRI industry in the early days. The biggest player (GE) was often behind the technology curve. They would announce upcoming features to “freeze” the market, giving prospective buyers a reason to wait for GE rather than buying a technologically-advanced MRI from a smaller player.
It's what legacy auto and fossil fuel companies have moved to... "Don't buy an EV... Hydrogen will be better... Or Flow Batteries.. Or Solid State Batteries... Or some other fiction we've got coming out next year..."
@@paulgoffin8054 Toyota's credibility has taken a hit lately in spite of their large marketing budget and influence over the media.
GE has lost its shine and when it comes to medical they are near laughing stock. GE focuses inward and has evolved into a bureaucratic old fashioned inept organization that can only win business through its finance division giving customers access to money. They sell on name value only and that is losing its value continually. Competitors that are agile and innovative are gaining and beating GE and view this lumbering dinosaur as how not to run a business. GE once the darling company of USA and King of Wall St is now junk. RIP
@@sunrisejak2709 Interesting. I left Toshiba America MRI (was Diasonics MRI) in 1996 to work in Biotech (Genentech) for 21 years before retiring. I do wonder how the physics in MRI has evolved since 1996.
@@peterbland7227 I'm in medical products my entire life and just retired 2 years back. Positions of VP Gen Mgr in the ventilator and cardiac businesses. I also worked in hospitals for years before embarking on the business side of things. I've personally watched the decline of GE over the years and in my segment ventilation we buried them and they didn't stand a chance. Granted I'm not in imaging space and I suspect advancements have occurred but GE us not seen today as an innovator. Jeffery Immelt (from the medical side) orchestrated a corporate strategy that worked in decades past but was clearly a failure. The stock collapse proved it. Acquisitions that were ill-conceived and then numerous spinoffs to shed unwanted expense. GE is famous for "lean management" or "6 Sigma" but they are not famous for customer focus or innovation (any longer). They have split up the company just to survive and divested businesses to save others. The days of JPMorgan or Jack Welch are over and for good reason. Anyway, as you can tell it is disappointing to see the "darling of America" drifting toward mediocrity. Ok, a few divisions, power and aerospace still thriving. But truth be told large public companies care more about share price than customer focused innovation and let the share price be solid as a result. Acquisitions in GE are about acquiring revenue not technology. Ok rant over,,,, 😁
My vacuum cleaner works great if I don't get any dirt in it. Same story with "don't DC fast charge..."
"Our batteries are more superior, just dont fast charge" 😂😂😂
Id be surprised if anyone is able to develop battery tech that defies thermodynamics. Best I can expect is a battery that is more energy dense.
"Our tech is superior - just don't check it - because TBD!"
Battery degradation is common if fast charge is done often but what about other EV batteries..that's another discussion on the effects of fast charging 🤔 🙄
@@jansenwilder1335What causes battery degradation is not charging speed but battery temperatures. This is now pretty well established, and acknowledged by Tesla engineers.
Battery cooling is a key area for new developments in charging speed and battery life.
It would be interesting to know if Toyota has improved the cooling of their batteries, or simply updated the chemistry or just shrunk the buffers in software.
Just about any change should improve their batteries, since the current BZ4X has about the worst battery tech in the business.
@@jansenwilder1335This is a myth. Various long term studies on cars with the same battery, charged on AC or DC exclusively, showed little difference in SoH
Drove one today (2wd). It felt big. But it was slow and non exciting. Car would be what you would buy if you wanted a cheap reputable car. The range on the dash was estimating 500klm at 100% charge. This is with eco mode activated. I felt AC and trottle was reduced slightly with eco mode. Without eco mode, range went to about 450klm. I couldn't see the main dash properly, and the steering wheel and seat need to be adjusted so you can try and see the dash over the steering wheel. This means the steering needs to be much higher than you would normally have it. Oh and the sun roof doesn't open on the top spec.
Hey Viking, the wireless charging you mentioned on the new Toyota BZ 4X maybe that’s wireless phone charging
They have redesigned the prius that looks amazing now and makes 54mpg not even in plug in version.
And on top it has been the most reliable car ever made in the history of the automobile. All well documented in consumer reports since the first iteration.
Hybrid is not perfect but so far the best compromise nad a necessary pivoting technology.
Happy new year Sam to you and your family.
In the cutthroat Chinese EV market, I am fairly certain that the Toyota 4X
will be a dud and won't sell due to fierce competition and far better cars that offer better
specifications, features and value for money.
I can't find a compelling reason to buy the Toyota 4X unless you are a Toyota loyalist.
Toyota’s new battery pack is state of the art. Runs on the oil of snakes. Also comes with a free bridge in Brooklyn.
Bz was the most selling car in October in Norway.
It's simple why the Australian price for the 4X is so high, Toyota does not want to sell any so they make the car really expensive.
Toyota has to sell it cheaper in China because its competitors in China are much cheaper. They sell it at regular prices elsewhere to make up for the losses. 😂
If they're changing the chemistry, then warnings about DCFC too much likely mean they tilted the balance away from longevity and towards density. If they increased density by cramming more active material into the pack then then the fast charging cautions could mean they replaced cooling structure with active material. If it's the marketing guys, then they're just doing what marketing guys do and lie about capabilities.
Sam, I think wireless charging refers to mobile phone charging (as shown in the video), not wireless charging the car’s main battery. The latter is still years away with no facilities anywhere to do anything of the sort as far as I know.
I’ll believe it when I see it as far as range goes. It’s big, out of date, and underpowered. Add to that poor DC charging and this is DOA. Toyota is not committed to making a good EV right now.
I think they think they don't have to. They believe the badge on the front will get them enough sales and they'll retreat to selling their existing ICE range in Africa.
I think they have that wrong too. There are going to be a lot of ICE manufacturers trying to milk the African market and they're going to find they won't get the prices they need there either.
@@paulgoffin8054 If ICE vehicles are not selling and stock is piling up in China, surely the legacy companies need somewhere to dump those excess vehicles?
@@erktrek Sometimes it's less expensive to do nothing and let them rot.
Brilliant move by Toyota! Queensland has a large population of people who are already familiar with the idea of ordering a 4X.🍺👍🏽🇦🇺😎
is driving barefoot or in thongs legal though? Might want to check........
are the people of Queensland all Interbred? Have you actually forgotten the disaster of a car that this is based upon?? This car is a sick joke from a company that hates EVs and could potentially kill people, especially in the outback: this ain't no Landcruiser, mate.
And you'd have to be swilling alot of 4X to buy this overpriced dud of a car
It takes years if not decades to build a reputation, Toyota are doing an excellent job of destroying theirs in but a few months,
Thanks. Let's wait and see...
Kinda cool that while i was watching I noticed that the Toyota B roll footage was pretty much all from my pretty little home town of Victoria BC.
Gorgeous town - one of my favourite places when we lived in the US 2008-2011 and journeyed through the PNW and BC for a few weeks.
It's pretty well known. I can only name 3 cities in BC and that Vancouver, Victoria, and Terrace. You will never guess which one my car broke down in on the way to alaska
Sam I just started getting ads for Toyota work force development in North Carolina following their EV investment announcement in this state. Seems like they are actually moving forward with their commitments however confusing they may be.
I expect the feature linking the air-con to battery range is when the car is switched on the air-con stays off thus increasing range. Outstanding 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A vwry good bev, great warranty on batteries, well build, very comfortable and fast. Good range in winter, 325km and in summer 450km, good.
Will it have the proper/intended steering wheel?
Happy New Year! 🎉
Happy new year!!
The Black thing is really nice!!!!
Toyota: trust us our battery is better (…from our previous one)
Isn't 4X an Australian beer?
I thought 4X was an Aussi beer....
Maybe only drunk people would buy it?
Was once the most popular condom brand in the USA - played the "I can feel a 4X coming on" ad for US friends -there was great confusion....
Castlemaine Forex
It was called XXXX because they couldn’t spell beer.🍺
Cheers mate
So it’s not designed for cross country DC fast charging. Just a high mileage city car?
Do the wheels still fall off?
The white 4x you showed only had black A and B pillars.
but do the wheels stay on the 4X?
Ridiculously expansive in Australia. Was hoping to purchase either this one or Subaru Soltera, not any more
Please, just get a tesla, you won't regret it.
Autoexpress tested the updated bz4x and the car was considered very good, excellent comfort, fit and finish, build quality, good range and very good 10 years warranty on batteries, an industry first.
Nothing wrong with the Bz4x, nothing at all....
Thanks
Welcome
Our local Toyota dealership suddenly closed.
Will it suddenly open in the New Year? That would be just considered vacation days.
"Trust us" yea ok.
The new improved 4X is decent.. but it has to have a better interior against the new Byd Song L and the Denza N7...among the similar design EV.. and likes of Polestar 3 and Cupra Tavascan are also coming out in 2024...
Toyota reputation depends on reliability
...and its from the 1980s. Today's Toys are no better than any other car. The company is sliding by on their glory days but the truth is, their products are NOT as reliable as they were in the 80s. I speak from bitter experience,
is there a 2 year wait time for delivery if I order one now?
Please consider a tesla, you will not regret it.
If you're lucky, they would never deliver you one. ( I think Toyota don't take EVs seriously.)
Lol! The Toyota commercial at the beginning is filmed in Victoria, BC, Canada. Perfect place to film it: People there and in most of Canada love Toyota and trust and believe them without question... 🫣 🙄 🤪
This guy must really hate Toyota.
2023 BZ4X did well in Bjorn Nylands tests, thats why it is already the second most popular car model in Norway. 2024 model is going to be even better.
They are ripping of consumers , such large price differences in different markets....
WRONG.
The best selling passenger car in 2022 is the new Tesla Model Y with 17,356 sales (+109.9%) up 3 spots from last year. The Volkswagen ID. 4 moves into second with 11,561 sales (+33.7%) and the Skoda Enyaq reaches 3rd with 7,558 (+32.3%).
sounds good. do the wheels stay on?
Yes as long as you don't drive it.
Personal preference, I bought it for the loook. I like the way it looks, teslas are hideous to me. Not everyone cares how fast a car can go and I hate long trips so why would I care about range lol 300km in 1 go is more than I’ll ever use. Level 2 charger at home, I’m good. So it just depends on your life style
After finally changing the family “fleet” to Toyota over the last 15 years, I’m glad to see they are fast-iterating what is likely our next vehicle.
Waiting for BZ5X
You're making a mistake when comparing length of cars - by making car longer, the consumption can be reduced, because air resistance can then get better. But shorter car can make it easier to park (and TMY has very poor turn radius)
Whats the name of the batteries and what is better with this batteries?
Lack of clarity tells you a lot doesn't it.
News flash, 2024 came.
3:52 It's still called Bz4x. The first two chinese characters stand for bz.
Having seen the presentation of the Xiaomi’s Taycan copy, I am confident saying these Japanese or European VE are at least 10 or more years behind th Chinese. When I see this vehicle in comparison with the ones launching in China, it’s like watching old documentaries of the car revolution in the 70s. Just the interior seems 20 years old!! The exterior design, no problem, but everything else, Including software, seems to be of the past century. It’s like watching now the first iPhone presentation event.
What do you expect from legacy auto who don't know EV tech. They're like Kodak and Blockbuster.
Will it be on the tesla charging network next year?
nope.
Should be called the E4X
It didn't change its name. In the video, on the front license plate, the letters B and Z are represented in two Chinese characters.
If you are talking about efficiency, combined hgwy+city in SUV category. Only Tesla Model Y(AWD, Long Range AWD, RWD) gets more Le/km. If you are looking at whole bev category then only Lucid air touring and pure, Ioniq 6, Model Y and 3 are the only ones more efficient than this/bz4x. They match Model S, EV6, Bolt EV and EUV. It still more efficient than ID4, Ioniq 5, Model X, Mach E and everything from BMW and Audi.
Hi Sam, greetings from the U.K. and a happy new year to you and your family. Toyota is rapidly losing all credibility. They will have cheated on the range figures, and don’t even ask about the crash testing! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Aww, now we have to call it the forks instead of the busy forks.
Toyota knows very well the car market. EV sales in USA have stalled a bit and Toyota predicted that. This channel predicted Toyota would be quickly bankrupt by now! However sales in 2023 with over 10 million vehicle sales have recovered nicely recording record profits and sales compared with the Covid industry supply chain woes resulting from that period. 2024 sales estimates are forecasted to be over 10.5 million vehicles making Toyota the clear leader in vehicle output and "1 in the auto industry. The rumor of Toyotas demise by Sam and this channel was greatly exaggerated. Mr. Toyoda is looking quite visionary at this point and holding his ground and understanding the customer shows in the very successful data and results he was right.
they should get another D for this offering especially if its built by another company.
I believe the only thing Toyota make on this car, is the badge. Its pure Chinese.
Evening mate
What’s with the lack of performance ? Model Y does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds
The price is $80,000?! Toyota does not want this to canibalize on their ICE car sales and they pretend like there is no competition from tesla, byd, zeekr and xiaomi
I agree. Ripping off Australia and US.
What are the top requests with EVs ? Range and fast charge speeds . It seems Toyota has a decent claimed range with this vehicle. Fast charging seems to be limited but if you charge at home and not traveling great distances your probably good to go . Sounds like an improvement. Soon they will have the solid state and game over
Seriously the Chines already have hybrid Solid State batteries in cars (NIO ET9 which has travelled over 1000km on a charge and can charge at 500kwh, battery also removeable in 5 minutes at 300 service stations in Europe), the Chinese dominate battery technology, game over has already happened but it is the Chinese who have won.
when they tested this car last year, they actually thought there was something wrong with it, the performance and range was so bad. Go check out Bjorn Nyland's test, its horrific. This car is an embarrassment. Toyota have no interest whatsoever in making EVs. In fact, I believe they are deliberately making appalling cars to get people to switch back to ICE.
@@GDM22 They've won nothing except the Chinese market.
@@StephenShawCanada The biggest market in the world, also doing very well in Australia, NZ and throughout Asia.
Certain Chinese vehicles have the performance but I'll put my money in reliability. I'm not one to invest in a vehicle with quality control issues found in Chinese vehicles. Granted that Toyota is behind in this EV area but their quality is almost unmatched. Newer features doesn't equate to superior vehicle, longevity is my preference because I can actually keep my vehicle for the long term.
Thats the problem med nickel and cobolt battery, there are iPhone 1 technology, we need CATL LMFP CTP 3.0 battery thats more like a iPhone 5 in technology
The masters of the universe did it again: Announcements how to rule the world of cars again. Loudmouths -nothing else. They are just funny or ridicolous. No DC fastcharging? 🤣 Please show the former CEO clown Toyoda more often! I like to see him making any announcements. He has a lot of talent as a comedian.
What's wrong with buttons?
I want to be able to control the radio, the air conditioning and the windows in the dark without taking my eyes off the road.
And I don't want to talk with a computer. It takes longer too.
Another thing, is there an EV that is not connected to the internet?
excuse the rant
happy 2024
5:46 C pillar is only partly black.
Your CLTC to WLTP conversions are wrong. Figure about 78% of CLTC, eg. 615km CLTC is about 480km WLTP, not 580km.
All right, 4X is a huge improvement over BZ4X, but 4X implies 4-wheel drive.
Maybe ZX would have been better, or else an entirely new name.

knowing Toyota, in the Uk it will be nearer 60k! Makes the Tesla look like a real bargain.
Who actually makes the battery for this car? Wikipedia says its CATL, a Chinese battery company, others say Panasonic, others say LG from 2025.
Probably still losing money at 80K$.
The problem with all old car companies is that they have an overstaffed management team and don’t have enough money for good specialists, unlike the Chinese.
Wow!!! Toyota has built a new electric car... And it's even better than their hydrogen car!!!
lol...hasn't been tested yet! lol
Toyota will be using LG battery. Already building a factory in US joint ventures with LG
Sam, Range fear is one issue, but Hyundai IONIC 5 has a battery that costs more than the car itself (at least in Canada. Good luck getting vendors to disclose battery replacement cost. All well and good recycling a battery, but at this price, battery issues could mean you have to replace a perfectly good vehicle. th-cam.com/video/dr3mFzh0KSk/w-d-xo.html
That will be because Hyundai don’t want to set up a battery replacement supply chain in Canada. Easier to have insurers write-off any vehicles with battery damage.
That story us misleading and multiple followups since then. Its a one off epic fail by Hyundai Canada who are doing damage control now...
I bet that now the steering wheel of the newer Toyota 4X model will fall off...😂
DOA
Where is the solid-state batteries with 1000 km of range!😂
Yes, been waiting for that now for years
Coming year 2077😂😂😂
The Nio ET7 just did 1000km on a charge, using a Hybrid Solid State battery that is swappeable in 5 minutes at 300 sites in Europe. It also charges at upto 500kwh.

The single motor is 150kw???
What the hell? 4x is crap

I have more confidence in Toyota than any of the Chinese models out there. As an American, they have no history here other than making some Volvos/Polestars.
Two underpinnings of the EV industry are likely getting much better performance and greater production in 2024. Batteries and semiconductor computer processor chips are improving in 2024. Not only Tesla's gen-3 4680 cells (possibly dry cathode and silicon anode) and Autopilot Hardware 5 chips, but batteries and chips from BYD, CATL, Gotion High Tech, Panasonic, Our Next Energy, IM3NY, LG Chem, TSMC, Samsung, Intel, Micron, SMIC, and GlobalFoundries are all likely to make improvements in 2024.
Hope they have a proper go Sam
bz4x wltp real range 315km
That wont sell over in Aust. at that price.
Interior dash looks horrible for $80K cost.
The new Hyundai/Kia models blow this away! Even the Fisker Ocean looks to be superior.
But have they upgraded their wheel bolts?
Japanese legacy auto is like Gollum, The day before, Redfall, Kong - Skull Island, and Starfield all in one package.

Does anyone really take Toyota seriously? If their next version just keeps the wheels on... it'd be a big upgrade!

This car sounds like a disaster
The car in front still isn’t a Toyota EV, it still trails the EV pack by a long way even after the so called improvements. Let’s see what it will do in Bjorn’s or Kyle’s hands first.
Toyota needs to do the same with EV's as with hybrids.
Make the Prius only EV. Then use the Prius as a test platform for the new EV's.
The sales of the Prius have tanked, any way.
Prius was a great stop gap and it gave us an option to reduce emissions when there was no real alternative.
But who'd buy a Prius now? The entire target market for it is buying EVs.
Yes, the Prius could have been their tech leader.
@@jimgraham6722 Absolutely. They could have increased the battery size and made it plug in within a couple of years of bringing it out. It should have been their path to a proper EV, taking tech from the part ownership of Tesla. But they placed a very stupid bet on Hydrogen instead.
Thought Toyota wasn't going to build EVs.
The busy forks styling is a little less busy but the battery is still forked…
Test drove original, 160 mile range, half the claimed. Won't trust any claims they make.
