  • Is Mazda's manufacturing quality truly world-class and is it as good, or even better, than Toyota's? Automotive Engineer David Chao examines and explains the quality of the all-new Mazda CX-60 at the Hofu factory in Japan. Even though the Mazda CX-60 isn't coming to North America, a similar model catered to the US and Canadian market in the form of CX-70 will be coming in the near future.

    I can attest to Mazda's quality and reliability. I have a 2005 Mazda 3 GT built in Japan. At 17+ years and 386,000 kms/240k miles of daily driving, I have zero rattles or noises whatsoever. She is solid as a rock, which is amazing considering mostly city driving and some bad roads up here on Toronto, Canada.. Outside of regular maintenance items she has been great. Clutch @ 317k kms, front bearings and LCAs at 330k kms. Paint is all original and gaps are still perfect. If I buy another Mazda, it'll have to be one still built in Japan.

      It’s hard not to have negative thoughts when supposedly environmentally minded California raises electricity rates so high (doubled in two years) that driving a pHEV makes no sense. In the meantime, they’re banning gas cars. And they’re shutting down the only sources of actual clean energy (nuclear) before there’s any semblance of a viable replacement. And no, wind farms don’t run 24/7 unless you have multiple redundant geographic locations running while being connected with upgraded power lines (which makes them economically infeasible). All of the “green” cheerleading you hear in the media is from highly selective data where they take the highest output day of the year for solar and wind and then say “renewables” are now cheaper than legacy fuels. It’s magical thinking. Do you know where electricity rates stand in Germany, which has the most “renewable” sourced electricity in the world?

    I don't know what this guy is talking about, I bought 2022 CX-5 in USA, made in Japan and imported to US, and I have quite a big gap between rear stoplight and rear door. Stoplight on the left side is good, but on the right side gap is much bigger and visible. I talked to dealer and they've said if I don't like it, we need to arrange special expertise (I'll probably need to pay for it) and send results to factory to process that further, I've decided to let it slide.
    Overall, car is good, but these statements about world-class or class-leading quality aren't backed by anything, I think Mazda has similar tolerance standards to other Japan manufacturers in similar price-range.

  • @inodesnet
    @inodesnet ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I have always appreciated the way they do their factory. I've been to a few Japanese factories and Mazda is one of the few (if the only) that has a single line for all models.
    By doing this a couple of things much be achieved:
    1. Mixing types and variations on single line means a highly optimised/lean line. Most car companies has a line per car type allowing for spares to sit idle. This is not possible in a multi-car line. Forces Mazda to be highly organised and clean. This shows in the production line.
    2. Assembly staff must be trained on all models are for this reason are more senior. Single line allows for junior staff to perform assembly.
    You point about panel alignment and shut lines is echoed by an Australian vehicle that compared a large group of SUV's. See: th-cam.com/video/C5252Bu9cGU/w-d-xo.html
    Quote: "It's the only car in the field that has absolutely perfect bonnet (hood) fit. This shut line that runs all the way up here, is exactly the same on both sides".

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mazda are world leaders in metallurgy so they should be good with shut lines.
      They lead really in unique stamping and welding techniques but more so, the strength of their steel and the amount is really unmatched.
      They hold a lot of UHSS (ultra-high tensile steel). In fact they held the world record for strongest automotive steel for over 10 years.

    I just traded my wife's Camry for a 2023 CX50 and absolutely love it. Toyotas are great quality and love our 2011 4Runner and they’re reliable as heck. They also have a much more user friendly infotainment system than Mazda. But that Mazda is hands down way more fun to drive and I have no issues with comfort. Toyota is in absolute love with a sunroof and all of their models except 3 I have to recline my seat to not have my head rubbing the ceiling with a sunroof even in our beloved 4Runner. I'm 6'4 and my head doesn't hit the ceiling in the Mazda even with its sunroof. Also our local Toyota dealer said add $5000 to sticker on their vehicles. $10,000 if it's a higher trim. Mazda sold me their car $500 under Msrp. Not great like the deals you used to be able to get 3 yrs ago but better than not straight up screwing you like Toyota dealer either lol

    Hi David,
    Even though Mazda is not my favorite, Lexus and TOYOTA are my favorites. I am very impressed with the way you have introduced Mazda that are models produced in Japan, the level of quality that they bring is truly impressive. This shows me that the quality control in Japan is just not with Lexus and TOYOTA. It’s with other brands in Japan as well , which is very intriguing to me and when you bring out this information that other car companies are close to or at the level of Lexus and Toyota that’s very exciting from a mechanic/engineering standpoint… you’re genius is pure genius…

    Before choosing a CX50 you should consider the following:
    1. The GT’s 20” rims and standard Goodyears (Canada) cannot be considered an off-road tire. Hopefully it works in winter but you don’t have much tread depth.
    2. This is no competitor to a Subaru product as there is no suspension travel, little ground clearance and a metric tonne-load of plastic under the Mazda (can you find the oil filter DIY’s)
    3. Fussy interior: Beautiful sure but it marks so easily and that surface around the shifter is hard to clean and scratches easily.
    4. How do you clean the heads-up display that sits in the well in the dash and do you find the display in the glass distorted or clear?
    5. Don’t count on great mileage and oil change intervals seem to be more frequent.
    6. Body: so many crevices to trap sand and salt over winter = early rust potential? Just wondering (had literally miles of weather strip components)
    7. Rear storage: Disappointing! The problem is the roof height. If you travel with small family (4) you must consider bringing empty luggage to the dealership. You may find a CX5 works better as luggage can stand vertically back to back?Try it! Or reconsider other brands. Don’t simply rely on volume data.
    8. Purchase experience: Maybe this is happening every where but freight and PDI seems greatly inflated and acting like a surcharge.
    9. Ergonomics: Not bad. Glad to see some buttons but the stitching on the steering wheel isn’t smooth, spokes are awkward and grip width at the 9 and 3 position aren’t good. You might agree after 500 miles.
    10. Chassis should be an inch or 2 taller to achieve a better ride and provide greater ground clearance. Isn’t this meant to be a better off-asphalt Mazda?
    11. Seats. Be sure you are ok with the Mazda designed butt-floss. This is weird and should be changed mid-production. Seats are hard. Bolsters are very hard. Access and egress for taller front passengers is a pain.
    12. Look hard at the CX5 before you buy the 50.
    13. Outward visibility is poor due to the tall door sills and low seating position. This is greatly annoying and further, the shape of the mirror looks nice but is less functional. I recommend looking at Subaru as outward visibility is fantastic.
    14. Decorative exterior panels scratch very easily.

    The only problem I have with my 2016 CX-5 is the heater, it takes a long time to get the engine hot in really cold weather. I put a new thermostat in it and it didn't help at all and from what I've found on the internet there is no fix except to cover part of the radiator with cardboard, Mazda's advice, which I did and it does help somewhat.

      I noticed that the heat takes awhile to to get to a comfortable temp in my '16 CX-5. I've had it for about 18 months. If that's all I have to worry about, I'm good.

    David, can you comment on the build quality from the Mazda Alabama plant (CX-50) vs the models made in Japan (CX-5)? And the upcoming CX 70/90 will be built in Alabama, no?

    Had a nearly new 2020 Mazda CX-9 Touring as an insurance rental for about 8 weeks when someone hit my vehicle. Wasn't all that impressed to be honest. I think the interior on my 15 year old BMW (even with the lack of all the technological advancements that car has compared to a 2020 Mazda) still feels more solidly put together. Doesn't squeak or rattle over every imperfection in the road like the Mazda did. And that goes without mentioning the vast difference in quality of the touchpoints around the cabin. But to each their own.

    • @AutomotivePress
      @AutomotivePress  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mazda CX-9 isn't the best one to compare, since its design is older. The newer Mazda's are still impressive, however.

    We had been a Toyota family until I ventured out in 2016 to buy a new Mazda CX-5 GT. So far, it and Lexus are the only vehicles I would place on the same pedestal as Toyota in terms of reliability. I would actually place our CX-5 slightly above Toyota but I need to tack on another 200,000kms to give that title. Lol. So far, so good. Sitting at only 132,000kms currently and not one problem other than a serpentine belt and tensioner.

    I own a 2019 Mazda3 manual transmission and it is made in Japan. I was excited for that. However, as I quickly realized made in Japan quality may not be as much as the differentiating factor as I thought. Lots of first year of production problems, rattles, etc. Also, I found a lot of made in China parts all over the car. I expected a made in Japan car to use a lot of Japanese parts. Even though the car is assembled in Japan, I believe manufacturers are getting parts from lower cost suppliers overseas, which I hope does not mean lower quality parts.

    Yea....mine needs service after 4.000km for suspension noise on bad roads, mazda app keeps bugging, with folded rear seets, the front seat easy access makes it crash into the folded seat headrest, keyless opening wont work on freezing temperatures, rear doors wont unlock with running car from the outside, can't use the mazda voice controls when using android auto, even happened I got stuck locked inside the driver seat and could not open from inside (lucky enough my kids opened from the outside which worked), assistents disable with every second dirt and keeps bugging on the dashboard for the entire trip unless you stop and clear the sensors. Came from us car and my experience is medicore with mazda. Driving is fun, comfort is decent, but a bit too buggy it seems.

    I live in Canada and have a CX-5.
    I love everything in the car and could write an essay about all the features I like.
    However, the seats are the only thing that disappoints me.
    If you commute for more than 30min, the seat is so hard that it hurts to keep driving it.
    It's a shame that with all the quality, the seats are so hard it kills part of the pleasure of driving it.
