Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2dAercv
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2dUWP8h
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post - amzn.to/2e2AVVt
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2dFuPZg
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2dApDpp
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2fzEYE1

I worked with Sean a lot early in my career, and I can say that he is one of the most serious and passionate filmmakers I've ever met.
He's so right - sound is so so so important - massive thumbs up on the film
His reluctance to give advice here shows he's a thoughtful artist who knows the pros and cons about shooting with a phone.
savedfaves how did they handle low light, even a great cam will fuck up in low light, how did they manage it with 5s
He is right, get a stabilizer and good sound, ive filmed a few videos with my iPhone and it needs these.
So true! Sound to me is equally as important as the video maybe more.
theory8sf I couldn't agree with you more... I am a sound engineer for films.. and I cannot stress this enough. Sound will make or break your film..
Please do a behind the scenes episode!!!!
Even with the 6+ there's a jell-o effect when moving quickly as the optical image stabilisation couldn't possibly compensate for the movement your hand is doing in a way that feels completely and utterly natural. A stabiliser it probably always advisable.
Yep. A bit of shake is always better than the awful pan and scan feel of IS.
Some awesome advice! People who want to start filmmaking but only have an iPhone or any other smart phone need to watch this first. :-)
Imagine is Sean Baker had the iPhone 15 Pro Max at the time LOL! There's absolutely no excuses Inspired filmmakers! No Excuses!
its so crazy that he said the audience can accept anything visually but the sound has to be crisp when me and quit a few of my fellow artist in the "cloud rap" scene of the early 2010s felt exactly the opposite. film HD sharp music videos like lil b the based god, main attakionz, a$ap rocky but the music was lo fi nasty and filtered lol. at least thats how i saw it and was tryna do it
- beautiful lou
Did you use to play with lil peep?
he's strictly talking about movies, music is completely different
@@noneofyourbusiness1114 no but ive toured with sesh, asap, raider klan etc maybe we met there
@@bender844 yea.. just giving an example/anecdote from the other end of the spectrum
No stabilizer was used ,just my own hand as the movie warranted it , but will for next project
All the best , JM
incredible how people made movies in iPhone ..just found it now..but sound and colour grading does the magic
And also get filmic pro.
Not necessarily
Shut up Tom. Grownups talking
Great insights from the Fellini of our time.
@Michael Murphy sorry man that's pretty awful advice. People should work with what they have first, if you know your stuff you can still creative a visually appealing film. Then you can rent a camera for your second.
sean baker
Agreed on the sound aspect, but there are more phones than the only one mentioned in the interview, like Samsung's S6/7, which are better in many ways. Why advertise one particular phone?
How about good lighting? No point using any device if the lighting is bad.
Lee in Qinhuangdao bow before 8 plus', the beast camera
He's talking about iPhone filmmaking because he made an award winning film with an iPhone, not a Samsung
Nicely done! Keep up the good work!
What was the budget of the movie?
Jan Norris 100,000
stabilizer or gimbal?? one with battery and motorized or mechanical and without battery
Good advice, thanks! KB
I really wish I could watch his feature...
8 Films It is currently playing in New York and Los Angeles and we believe it will be hitting other cities if you are hoping to see it in a theater. Also believe it may hit VOD soon, so keep an eye out.
Why didn’t we get like 200 movies shot on iPhones after Tangerine?
does anyone know which sound equipment did he used?
Here's a great article on No Film School that goes into depth on the production including sound - nofilmschool.com/2015/07/tangerine-sundance-iphone-5s-sean-baker-radium-cheung-interview. Sean spent a good amount of money to make sure the audio was top notch professional.
very nice :)
Ok but now we've got optical stabilizers on our iPhones
MrJodete23 it has it but it will start to shake so much when you do very fast or action footags
No 'in camera' stabilisation will ever be good enough to shoot handheld for making a movie.
Besides. For just 129 bucks. You can get a DJI Osmo mobile 2.
Anyone know the mics that we’re used?
Although they filmed with an iPhone, they went heavy duty with sound. They didn't cut any corners with sound. A little more on the production can be found in this article - nofilmschool.com/2015/07/tangerine-sundance-iphone-5s-sean-baker-radium-cheung-interview
