    Tangerine got me blown away, I literally can’t imagine how he filmed it. The cast, the script, the editing, everything is so precise, just awesome. I can’t imagine how he made non-actors act both that natural and that professional, like pro actors. I loved every bit of this movie, every scene.

    Tangerine makes clear that the tools you use are nowhere near as important as your talent in using them.
    Thanks, for this excellent interview and insight into making a high quality low budget film!

    seeing sean baker improve over his career is so incredible. not only from a technical standpoint but as a filmmaker as a whole. no one deserves that Palm d’Or more than Mr Baker

    This is the only movie I watched by Sean Baker, and his utilization of iPhone for cinematography blew me away. It’s genuinely inspiring, showcasing the possibility of film in a new era.

    Great video.
    We can't wait to see Tangerine. Hope it inspires young people to a) tell unusual, untold and unseen stories and b) use the materials and equipment they have at their disposal to do so.

    I know this is a video from many years ago, but I recently shot a full-length feature film on an old LG v40 phone, and my inspiration was Sean Baker and Tangerine. And so if Sean ever reads this, thank you for raising the bar for what can be done when you don't have millions of dollars. When the only thing you have access to is what's in your pocket.

    I decided to shoot my film on an iPhone XR with a limited budget myself, I just wanna say I find it ironic that this page is called film courage, my cousin shit talked me saying I’m cutting corners saying I got cheap equipment, I got myself a good gimbal, a good tripod, a good mic and a good lens, I got myself filmic pro, a powerful laptop, and the software I need,

      One of the key takeaways from Sean's story is that he made sure that he got top quality audio during production. He didn't cut corners with sound.

    • @vinceduquestories
      @vinceduquestories 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@filmcourage definitely pulled that out of the interview; thank you. As an older filmmaker making the shift from 20 years as assistant director and one of the chief architects of making other people's stuff, I' been directing my own stuff lately in the spirit of the Nouvelle Vague and Sean Baker for sure and I am for sure learning hard the lessons for ensuring great sound - and great casting. Those two things glaringly take you out of the movie when I don't have that... thanks again!

    Great, insightful interview as always but I honestly don't buy him saying shooting on an iphone wasn't purely a marketing thing. There are plenty of other options in almost the same size and price category that would have made it a lot easier for them to shoot video with.

    "shot on iphone" is purely marketing thing. a lot of dslr's cost lower than iphone, but nobody would write a headline for film shot on dslr

    • @rjd3434
      @rjd3434 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      +Shtrih55 sure they would. If the film is brilliant it will. Nobody knew the film was shot on Iphone until the credits. And frankly, given my having zero money and being a screenwriter that gets a lot of stupid looks from producers and managers. Knowing that I could make a lot of the things I write on a micro budget, hearing this type of thing motivates me all the more.

    • @tatehildyard5332
      @tatehildyard5332 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      RJ D You just said EXACTLY what I was thinking. Also, I love everything about filmmaking but the cameras (I fucking hate the cameras). I've never been a gear head and those things take so much money to get, and maintain, you have to use it all the time to justify the purchase, and it takes forever to set it up properly/operate. This movie was a Godsend to me because I now know I can make a movie with a camera I don't regret purchasing.

    • @darkmikerises
