    His perspective, the way he looks to the cinema is just amazing and inspiring. I always loved cinema and watching movies. To me writing a story is building a world just for yourself. That's why I become angry when I see unrealistic scenes and dialogues in movies. That's why I love his works because he is so realistic. And all I want is one day to get a chance to meet him and get a chance to work with him to learn things from him. Because to me writing a good script and directing it the right way is so important and he is one of the best at it. I wish he had given chance to other nonpro talented directors or screenwriters chance to work with him and teach them things he knows about. Because even if you are good at something it won't matter after you die unless you make it pass to other generations. (sorry for bad eng btw)

      I agree. I was completely dumbfounded by all the -idiots- naysayers of Dunkirk, who said they didn't like the movie because they felt no connection to what was going on due of the lack of characterization. I wondered what movie they were watching - they seemed to totally miss the point - Nolan was making the viewer the character, by transporting us into that situation, that experience.

    • @johnnygoesfast9397
      @johnnygoesfast9397 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fun Guy - Im glad you enjoyed it. And youre right about complainers due to lack of characterization; mainly, cuz of the non traditional storytelling. But, the movie was not very deep, even though, there was great depth of character and aesthetically appealing 14-18mm shots. There was very little emotion or feeling.
      Not exactly Scheindler's List.

    • @SultanofSmash
      @SultanofSmash 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Johnny Enright To each their own. Dunkirk is an excellent example of what visual storytelling can accomplish. I was extremely moved by it, and emotionally engaged all the way through. I was more invested in the struggles of characters who I didn't even know the names of than films or television shows that spend hours developing their characters with backstory. That's not to say I haven't seen excellent films/tv doing the exact opposite of Dunkirk, but to say it's a shallow film... I couldn't disagree more.

    • @johnnygoesfast9397
      @johnnygoesfast9397 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SultanofSmash -you're right! Never tell the audience what they know. Any idiot can do voice over narration. And depth of character is implied when done well; rather than, long exaggerated back story.
      Don't get me wrong, Dunkirk was a great film, but it seemed a little one demensional...
      You could make a movie within the movie from almost every scene...
      Like the British officer that waits behind for any Frenchman. The docks before launching into the English sea or the capture of a British Pilot.

    • @johnnygoesfast9397
      @johnnygoesfast9397 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SultanofSmash one d emensional meaning, you get what you see...
      Kubrick, however, was the master at multidimensional storytelling.
      Take The Shining. A movie about isolation and falling into Maddness, but also a metaphor for the American Indian genocide.
      2001 Space Odesey is about human/artificial intelligence
      But also about sexual reproduction and power/control

    Christopher Nolan is probably the only person I worship. Not just admire, not just adore, but worship. He has inspired me greatly, pushed the limits of my imagination, and although I've always wanted to get into films, his work is truly what gave me the biggest motivation to pursue. Now, I've written stories, made a short film, and I'm glad to say it's layered in narrative, inspired only by the very best : Christopher Nolan. Thank you, sir. The world is made wonderful by your presence. ♥️

    For me, Nolan is an extremely satisfying and an extremely frustrating filmmaker at the same time, but his influence on modern cinema is inescapable.

      Nikhil Venkatesa could u elaborate on that?

    • @nikhilvenkatesa
      @nikhilvenkatesa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Drids Zzz Sure, although I know I'm treading on thin ice with all the Nolan fans on the Internet. He's extremely satisfying as an image-maker and a filmmaker who provides genuine spectacle at the cinema, and he's a master at evoking an atmosphere and tone in each of his films. But at the same time, his characters are often emotional ciphers for me, and his form can overwhelmingly dominate the story being told. "Dunkirk" exemplifies both the best and the not-so-best of Nolan's work.

      +Nikhil Venkatesa How can you complain Nolan's characters? He has such a great gallery of emotionally driven characters.

    • @nikhilvenkatesa
      @nikhilvenkatesa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Tre Drago They're emotionally driven usually because we are told that they are, but that doesn't make them emotional characters you can empathize with. Take Dom from Inception for instance. We're reminded over and over again about the tragedy with his wife and how he's driven by providing for his children, but we never get to empathize with him as a widow and as a single father. There are obviously exceptions to this, and "Interstellar" is the biggest one.

    While I don't always agree with every decision in his films, I trust his vision and respect what he's doing because he's clearly someone with a vision and who knows what he's doing. He's right that, as an artist, you have to stand firm and believe in your vision. It's not an easy thing to do when outsiders seem intent on changing whatever you do into what they think it should be.

    A lot of people say he is Overrated but I think he is far from overrated more like overlooked or you can say even underrated, doesn't get as much props as he should for his own style of directing. He is one of the best from this generation, Oscars take more notice of his directing, you really snubbed him for some awesome films which he directed like : The Dark Knight, The Prestige, Interstellar and I would even say Memento. Can't believe he only received one nomination for his directing, insane.

    I get the feeling great directors would make great managers at just about any level. They have hold it all together under insane competing circumstances - to be the quiet centre of the storm guiding it all home. Mind you I also think The Joker from Dark Knight would make a superb project manager or event planner so maybe I'm just full of shit.

    • @MacGuyver85
      @MacGuyver85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I agree with you. It’s clear he understands his job as a director isn’t bossing people around, but instead create the correct environment for other people (actors and crew) to thrive in. I think that also explains his dislike for green screens etc. The response/effort you’ll get out of both actors and crew will be more genuine in a (more) real setting.
      In short, he must be a humble guy that respects the people around him.

    My favourite lines in Nolan movies (well the ones i saw):
    Following - "You take this and show them what they had"
    Memento - "Remember Sammy Jankis"
    The Prestige - "Which knot did you tight?"
    Inception - "Will you take a leap of faith? Or will you become an old man, filled with regret and waiting to die alone?"
    Interstellar - "Don't let me leave, Murph!"
    Dunkirk - "Will he be okay? The boy?"

      *Internal Sigh* By saying Christopher Nolan is incredible, I am not saying that all other directors are shit. I agree that the other directors mentioned (I have seen one or more movies by each of them) are good (with the exception of Chazelle. I liked , La La Land and Whiplash but I think he is a bit overrated) but I prefer Nolan. I am allowed to have an opinon and a preference, just as you are. Stop being pretentious and rude, Phil.
