    Haugen was a tough as nails brawler, but Whitaker produced an absolute masterclass here.
    Didn't lose a minute, never mind a round, giving a textbook example of how to beat an opponent who is physically stronger.

    Whitaker was just a phenom! Before he got old (and became a borderline alcoholic) he never even looked like he was in a fight. He was just playing a game in the ring, he was so talented. While Mayweather and Hopkins boxed like scientists, reading every feint to avoid punchers, Sweet Pea could dodge everything like he wasn't even trying!

    • @kawaiiafangirl
      @kawaiiafangirl ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both Mayweather and Hopkins had great defenses. What I like about Sweet Pea as a boxer though is that he throws (and lands) more punches on his opponents whereas guys like Mayweather and Hopkins tend to use their legs and clinching a lot more. Floyd and Hopkins don't like to engage when their opponent does and sneak in a hard jab, a lead right hand, a counter, or a quick one-two from time to time and only begin to throw punches when they know their guy is hurt, but Pea throws about 65-80 punches per round throughout the bout.
      Whitaker blocks like they do but I think he was greater when it comes to dodging punches bc he throws more punches also which means he keeps himself within range of his opponent and imo, makes his defense even more miraculous.

    Haugen might be unfairly remembered nowadays mostly for the beating he took at the hands of Chavez in 93, but this is his worst loss by far. Haugen was in his absolute prime in 89, and here he is facing an up and coming kid still early in his career, and he can't land a single shot on him, let alone win a round. This is as one-sided as it gets. No amount of Haugen shaking his head will ever change that. (Don't mean to be too brutal to the man either, he was a formidable champion in his own right, just was completely outclassed here).

    One of the more impressive things about Whitaker's performance was how effective he was with the jab. When southpaws are matched with orthodox fighters, it can be almost impossible to establish the job, for both sides. The opponent is further away and it's easy to close the shoulder and block. In this fight though, Whitaker shredded Haugen with a stiff lead jab. Part of the reason was that Haugen fights kind of square and tends to lean in. The main reason though, was Whitaker's speed and technical brilliance. 'Power thrills but speed kills.' On that night, Haugen kept getting run over by a Maserati. Rest In Peace, Sweet Pete. I hope you're enjoying it up there with all the other champions.

  • @teamroyal50

    Whitaker was a nightmare opponent for anyone. A southpaw with speed and athleticism. I think Haugen would have done better in a rematch at a neutral site. Granted.....a tough fight regardless.

      Narrow shoulders, large head, short arms, long legs but short stature... yeah, what makes you think that? Diego Corrales was another peculiarly disproportionately built guy... almost 6' but with really short arms and a rather large head. He took a lot of punishment in his career as a result, though his crushing punching power saved him against shorter fighters with longer arms and better boxing ability like Acelino Freitas and Jose Luis Castillo; both of whom were beating Corrales until he came from behind to knock them the fuck out!

    At 4:17 Whitaker doesn`t put his right foot outside or inside the orthodox lead foot of Haugen, Haugen should of tried to exploit this but doesn`t know anything about footwork, Mayweather would have got outside Whitaker`s lead foot meaning he would of escaped Pea`s jab very often, which was why the southpaw Pac couldn`t cut the ring off Floyd in their bout.

    at Lightweight?

    • @Bill-Butcher
      @Bill-Butcher 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Whitaker beats both at lightweight, in fact he beats both at welterweight too as long as we are using prime welterweight Whitaker, the one that beat Chavez, Cardona and McGirt (2nd fight) in back to back fights.
      I think Mayweather would give Pernell a tougher fight than Pacquiao. Whitaker has a skill advantage over both men but the pure boxing skill gap over Pacman is huge. He beats Pac about 10-2 or 9-3 at worst.... he beats Floyd 8-4 or 7-5.
