100% agree. Running is throwing one punch and rounding the ring 9x like Andre Dirrell. Sweet Pea is frustrating with his crazy foot and body movement. Defensive boxing is kinda of a paradox to watch for newer fans, because most fans come want to watch contact and blood and guts. Kinda like me not liking UFC because of the over grappling. UFC hard core guys can watch it and get into it, but its not for me.
Sweat Pea was a master but he was too defensive and clownish sometimes. I hate when people say, "the objective of boxing is to hit and not get hit". No. That's the science of boxing. The objective is to KO your opponent, period. Scoring was only invented as a means to declare a winner without getting fighters killed by fighting endlessly until someone got knocked out, and in doing so, paved the way for some guys to treat it like a points karate match, and never really try for the KO because they're too skilled for the other guy. I can't blame guys for doing that, as they avoid damage and risk, but it's really antithetical to what a boxing match is supposed to be, and it's also why the aggressive fighters usually are the most popular. If Mayweather didn't create his Money May persona and get people hating him, nobody would've ever wanted to watch him, after he moved up in weight, had the hand issues, and fought much more defensively and risk-averse. When he was young, he messed a lot of people up violently like Chicanito, Corrales, Manfredy, and Sharmba Mitchell.
I think a lot of you guys are confusing good defense with "running." Moving out the way of a punch and then coming back landing your own punches without getting hit is smart boxing. He doesn't even move fast when he's walking away. These guys just couldn't hit him when he was in his prime.
No, Whitaker didn't run (Ha!). I guess that is why he was backpedaling throughout the whole fight. Whenever Chavez got close to him he would grab him and hug him. I don't blame him. After what Chavez did to Meldrick Taylor I would run and hug to. "The fight against Ramirez is widely thought of as arguably THE biggest robbery in the history of boxing." Says who? You and a few others? Maybe in your opinion, but not in mine.
Ray Robinson, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pernell Whitaker, Manny Pacquiao, and I have a tie with between Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran as the five greatest pfpers of all time.
Oh and not in the opinion of the judges who scored the fight for Ramirez. I'm glad those judges rewarded Ramirez for coming to fight, not make it a track meet or see who wiggles their hips more. Bottom line, Whitaker lost.
Whitaker set a world record running! Nobody runs anymore the Mexicans run the show and the fans got $ to pay p.p.v I don’t think he would sell tickets running!
Being Mexican and being a boxing fan is a weird thing. You're expected to root for your guys, you're expected to say they won fights that they didn't win. You're expected to be Mexican first, boxing fan second. You will never understand the sport if you view it that way, personally I refuse to be a part of it. This was a straight whooping at the hands of Whitaker. Ramirez may have been at the end of his career but he was still a formidable fighter and retired early for a boxer (he was 31 for his final fight) and really it would be years after debuting until he fought quality opposition (much like a typical amateur career) so his mileage is exaggerated by his fans. No version of Ramirez ever beats Whitaker, not the version that got a gift decision a year earlier, not any version.

@shoulderollHD Whitaker got a TWO gift decisions against Wilfredo Rivera, gift decision against Buddy McGirft, lost his lost fight against Bojorquez, got and stomped by Felix Trinidad. He ran too much against De la Hoya and also ran in his first fight against Ramirez. He avoided so many fighters its not even funny. I can name them if you want.
I notice you still haven't made that poll, and that you were lying about ever doing that on Eastsideboxing, as hardly anyone there would pick Pep over Duran. Why not make it already? Or did you recognize my name and get cold feet?
You're saying someone else doesn't know about the sport yet you incorrectly state Armstrong's credentials. He held the Feathereight, Lightweight, and Welterweigh titles at once, not the Lightweight, Welterweight, and Middleweight. And you are terrible wrong about Duran. I think Pea may have beaten him, but no way Featherweight Pep does, nor does Chavez. Duran was better in every area than Chavez and had more dimensions to his game.
I don't think so at all, both shut him out, both put clinics on him, but the fact remains that an amateur Whitaker schooled a prime pro Camacho in the gym, and Camacho was scared to man up.
Definition of expose: "to reveal or unmask (a crime, fraud, impostor, etc.): to expose a swindler." Leonard would have "exposed" Duran if she would have shown the world that Duran was a fraud or was not as good as people thought he was (ie. Barrera exposing Hamed, Tyson expsoing McNeely). But of course, this isn't the case, because Duran is an all-time great and BEAT Leonard in their most memorable fight. Therefore, your use of expose is totally wrong.
If not fighting someone is ducking, in that case, Chavez ducked Buddy McGirt, Azumah Nelson, Maromero Paez and Brian Mitchell. doesn't seem likely huh? he got a gift decision or two when he was old, but so did Chavez, most famously with Whitaker and also with MA Gonzales.
Your wrong about that though. I'm going back and forth on this argument between you two. No way Duran kills Whitaker though. I believe you are too biased toward Duran, although he was top 10, and that vze3zzh6 is too biased against him.
Well I shouldn't say it like that, as Benitez style-wise is capable of giving Whitaker a very tough fight, but you said it like Benitez was a better fighter.
I take it that you haven't actually watched the first JCC v Taylor fight then? Chavez was miles behind on all the scorecards and Richie Steele controversially stopped the fight with 2 seconds left when Taylor was on his feet. I'm not saying that JCC was not a great fighter, but so was Whitaker and he had the style to trouble Chavez if they had met at any point in their careers.
14liljinx taylor had a face fracture and that wasn't for that knock down. it was due to accumulation of punches. there's a difference between beating someone and just outpointing. taylor was outpointing chavez. but at the end chavez face was clean. taylor with face fracture, urinating blood for days and end up with brain demage.
Chavez vs Taylor I was one of the strangest fights ever. Why? Although Mel took tremendous punishment over the first 11 rounds, I didn’t see more than 4 rounds you could give Chavez. So in essence, he was winning by a lot but gradually losing not only the fight but his future faculties. I blame his corner for the 12th round. They told him to win it when one he didn’t need it and two, he was in terrible shape.
He undoubtedly said that to show good words for Pep if Pep was right therte with him, that's pretty tarsnparent. Watch them fight, they really didn't fight much a like other than the fact that they were both great defensive masters and very slick. Totally different offense and everything. And I'm sure you're one of the only ones who thinks Willie Pep could beat Duran at LW. That is insane.
Pernell Whitaker was amazing. I grew up idolizing him, James Toney, and Roy Jones and, when I was an amateur boxer in high school, patterned my style after them. HOWEVER, he was NOT the greatest lightweight of all time; Roberto Duran was. Whitaker is the second best lightweight of all time. If they'd met in their prime, I think Duran would win. Whitaker would be a nightmare for him, but that genius level infighting and perfected dirty boxing breaks Whitaker down in the later rounds, I would think, and Duran wins a close decision.

@shoulderollHD Whitaker lost to Bojorquez, sorry buddy. He also lost to Trinidad, needed two gift decisions against Rivera, a gift decision against Buddy McGirt (who fought with an injured arm) and did deserve his losses against De la Hoya and Ramirez, all he did is run. That is SIX losses. If he would have fought Quartey he would have lost but he ducked him. He also never fougth Meldrick Taylor, ducked a prime Camacho, ducked Rosario, ducked James Page and Jose Luis Lopez at welter!

No it doesn't. Whtiaker's whole career was made from ducking fighters, Macho Camacho, Meldrick Taylor, Edwin Rosario, JL Lopez, Ike Quartey, Terry Norris, the list goes ON AND ON.
Bullshit! Had Edwin Rosario not lost his WBA title to Juan Nazario, Rosario is EXACTLY who Whitaker would've fought (and beaten). He never ducked Camacho, either. Camacho was always a weight class above him, and unifying the lightweight title was a clearly and often stated goal for Pernell, who had NOTHING to gain by chasing after a boxer so clearly inferior to himself. Norris was always SEVERAL weight classes above Whitaker, and Taylor was his stablemate... they'd have NEVER fought each other. On the other hand, look at the fighters he DID fight and defeat. Ramirez (twice), Pendelton, Mayweather, Paez, Haugen, Nazario, Nelson, Diaz, Chavez (a clear cut robbery being scored a draw), McGirt (twice), Rivera (twice), Hurtado, De La Hoya (another clear cut robbery ruled a loss... even Merchant, who hated Whitaker, expressed his opinion that Whitaker had done enough to beat De La Hoya).
@@daTruChosen De la Hoya los to Whitaker ??? Ha ha !!! Crazy opinion you have there. Seems more like bias 😁. De la Hoya won a close fight because he was fighting a clown in Whitaker. Hardly did he fight de la Hoya the way boxing was judged back in those days. Which is why De la Hoya won.

The weight was up to 135 due to opponents failing to make weight, but he was universally a Featherweights, and nobody he faced at 135 was as good as Duran. Saddler was great at FEATHERWEIGHT, but even at that weight wasn't as good as Duran at Lightweight. Duran was too big, too strong, and too much for Pep at 135 if Saddler was too much at 126.
Whitaker's never given anyone a "beating." He wins all his fights be boring decisions. He runs during the last minute and waits for the judges to give him the win. The best fighters he has knocked out are Jake Rodriguez and Juan Nazario, both bums. Ramirez said that Whitaker hits less hard than all the featherweights.
LOL, Whitaker schooled Hector Camacho in his own gyn, and this was a young Pea against a prime Camacho. Macho was great in his prime, but he was no Pea.
And yes I have Pea winning over Duran because he was a bigger, and in my opinion more well rounded version of Pep. Pep was too small for Duran period, though his style may have been a problem. He had the style, nopt the substance, I feel Pea had both.
Two, actually... the loss to Trinidad, when he had his jaw broken in round 2, and the DQ loss to Bojorquez when Whitaker broke his collarbone. Let the record state, however, that Whitaker took ALL of 1998 off to rehab/detox after the NC against Pestraiev in 1997, taking on a prime, 26 year old Trinidad without a tune up fight first. He'd have beaten Trinidad, too, if he'd been in shape.
Chavez was 31, only 2 years older than Whitaker. And Whitaker boxed his head off that night, so much so that not even Don King and the WBC (who King had in his pocket) had the balls to give the fight to Chavez. Chavez was a great fighter, but struggled against skillful boxers (see Meldrick Taylor).
he just show off that he can dodge all the opponent punch in the latest round, thats all. try make a good impression, becos he already win every round.
Chavez was an excellent defensive boxer; but he wasn't running all over the place trying not to get hit. Some people see defensive boxing as something desirable; and it is; but only as the spice of the meal; not as the meal itself. I want defensive boxing NOT TO LOOK LIKE defensive boxing. When defensive boxing is obvious; then it becomes BOOORRIINNNGGGGG...I don't pay to see boring guys running all over the ring; its time to draw the 8 feet circle in the middle of the ring.
Just because you flip burgers for a living doesn't make everyone else a fool. Ramirez and Whitaker fought in France, a neutral country so there wasn't any bias. Just because SweetBoring Pea lost doesn't mean you have to hate everyone else. "he simply outboxed and outfought and outclassed Chavez." Buahahaha!! I'm not even going to dignify that remark. I'll just take it that you like guys will wiggle their ass and run around the ring throwing pitter patter shots!!!
Jose Luis Ramirez was old and put of prime when he beat Whitaker the runner in the first match imagine if Jose Ramirez was in his prime he would of beaten this runner
Aldine Westfield lmao no calling someone a runner isn’t gonna change anything, per wee beat José the first time too I hope u know judging a fight isn’t just about aggression, fact is that judges look at defense and ring genres hip as well and when we talk aggression they look at effective aggression running doesn’t put u down on scorecards missing does it puts the other fighter up because that’s called defense making ur opponent miss do u know this or are u looking at the fight in a biased way ?? I can put money on it that u watched this fight wanting José to win which isn’t very good when judging a fight cause that’s where the biased comes into play
Whitaker was boring and got his butt kicked by Ramirez. He beat Chavez in a track meet all right, but not in the fight. Remember, this isn't to see who is the fastest runner, it's to see who is the better fighter. Whitaker=better runner. Chavez=better fighter.

Hmm, must be the reason, then, why seven of the ten greatest boxers of all time are BLACK... and of those seven, four (Sugar Ray Robinson, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, and Pernell Whitaker) were defensive geniuses. So, there's much to be said for the "black" style of technical/defensive/intelligent boxing. Just saying.
Jose luis already had too many fights. He beat pernell the first one. A young jose luis would have beaten pernell rip sea pea. Jl was robbed by judges after Alexis was dropped and out boxed
Just draw an 8 feet -in diameter- circle in the center of the ring; take a point from a boxer everytime he gets out of that circle; now, that should make boxing a more interesting sport! Let the record state, however, that Whitaker took ALL of 1998 off to rehab/detox after the NC against Pestraiev in 1997, taking on a prime, 26 year old Trinidad without a tune up fight first. He'd have beaten Trinidad, too, if he'd been in shape.
De La Hoya had beaten him fair and square.
5 lost.
No he didnt. He boxed Chavez ball sack all night. No points were taken which is really the only unjust thing that happened that fight.
he just show off that he can dodge all the opponent punch in the latest round, thats all. try make a good impression, becos he already win every round.
Not at the same time.
Pernell got robbed in his first fight against Ramirez
jajajajaja
Bee bee Road runner
Whitaker did good in this one, better than their first encounter. All Whitaker did was run like a bitch in Ramirez/Whitaker I.
Buen estratega Whitaker, pero realmente era grotesco dando la espalda y corriendo
si es verdad, el cabron tenía mucha habilidad, buena defensa buen jab pero si en ocasiones corría
During Ramirez-Whitaker I, Ramirez deserved the fight. He landed the better punches, I don't give points for running.
When defensive boxing is obvious; then it becomes BOOORRIINNNGGGGG...I don't pay to see boring guys running all over the ring; its time to draw the 8 feet circle in the middle of the ring.
shit whos ramirez fighting? Tyrone Biggums
Highway robbery.
Boxing lesson. Whitaker won every round
P.S. Record books show WhitaBore lost to Ramirez and drew with Chavez!!
Only because the corrupt Mexican controlled WBC profited from homeboys Ramirez and Chavez.
Este es el que le dio una paliza al gran cocain mexicano Jc Chávez ?
Jose Luis Ramirez was old and put of prime when he beat Whitaker the runner in the first match imagine if Jose Ramirez was in his prime he would of beaten this runner
Aldine Westfield lmao no calling someone a runner isn’t gonna change anything, per wee beat José the first time too
I hope u know judging a fight isn’t just about aggression, fact is that judges look at defense and ring genres hip as well and when we talk aggression they look at effective aggression running doesn’t put u down on scorecards missing does it puts the other fighter up because that’s called defense making ur opponent miss do u know this or are u looking at the fight in a biased way ?? I can put money on it that u watched this fight wanting José to win which isn’t very good when judging a fight cause that’s where the biased comes into play
Right and what do you think of chavez vd Whitaker?
Boo hoo old and out of prime at 30 years old. Get a life.
Man shut up
Fuck outta here fantasy Island ass lol yell
Whitaker was boring and got his butt kicked by Ramirez. He beat Chavez in a track meet all right, but not in the fight. Remember, this isn't to see who is the fastest runner, it's to see who is the better fighter. Whitaker=better runner. Chavez=better fighter.
The f road runner whitaker
Pep was a Featherweight, Duran would've destroyed him at LW. Any boxing historian will tell you the same thing. Pep was too small.
Damn pernell was just punishing that guy
Did he do a better job against Chavez, Haugen, DLH and Tito?
That's right.
I'll need that prescription pair of Mexican glasses before I can see Whitaker losing to JCC and Maromero.
Pernell is one of the greatest boxer of all time. Skill wise there is none better. He clowned on Oscar JCC and this fool.
whitaker is the 5% of the chavez greatness and you know it, thats why you are so angry before the greatness. and ramirez beat whitaker, study before you talk
lol to that after 7 years , after floys comfirmed that SP beat Chavez study that
look up morrad hakkar vs hopkins. thats running. What whitaker does is boxing.
"Profesinal boxing" hahahahahahahah at 6:45 AND 8:02 THAT'S PROFESIONAL BOXING at its best! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! That's being a clown...and clowns belong at the circus...Have you noticed that defensive boxing is -almost exclusively- used by BLACK boxers?
Hmm, must be the reason, then, why seven of the ten greatest boxers of all time are BLACK... and of those seven, four (Sugar Ray Robinson, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, and Pernell Whitaker) were defensive geniuses. So, there's much to be said for the "black" style of technical/defensive/intelligent boxing. Just saying.
Gene Tunney and Benny Leonard were defensive too and they were white. Same with Nicolino Locche and Willie Pep
I scored it 114-113 for Ramirez.
Jose luis already had too many fights. He beat pernell the first one. A young jose luis would have beaten pernell rip sea pea. Jl was robbed by judges after Alexis was dropped and out boxed
Cómo jigo de la xjingada no iba a ganar el witaket si se acababa de morir el zurdo felix
Just draw an 8 feet -in diameter- circle in the center of the ring; take a point from a boxer everytime he gets out of that circle; now, that should make boxing a more interesting sport! No more "Stinging like a bee, and flying like a butterfly" bunch of crap! One day that rule is going to be adoped and things will be a lot better; so you want to avoid being hit?; then pay for it! Are we paying millions of Dollars, just to see punks avoiding getting hit? Hell no! I want them to die 4 the money!
