UPI reported: "Middleweight contender Rubin (Hurricane) Carter finished stronger Saturday night to win an upset, split 10-round decision over George Benton that snapped Benton's winning streak at nine straight in their nationally televised fight at MSG. Love this. I could watch fights like this in b/w all day. Notice that this is what true middle weights look like. These guys look like welterweight’s today be cause of the rehydration.
Hurricane is a legend, not only did he beat his opponents in the ring he also beat his court case where he was wrongfully convicted, now that's beast mode.
Those attorneys and the little boy believed in him won his court case against racist cops who set him up.

Boxers from yesteryears (especially 40's to 60's) are really much better in terms of skills than boxers of today's. Most world champions today are not even half as good as those contenders before. Benton and Carter both failed to win a title but don't be fooled, THEIR skills are on far with the All Time Greats. That's how good boxers from yesteryears.
People treat it as the most modern must be the most skilled, but it is not always the case.
The Men Of That Period (My Dad) Were Different Physically (Lighter/Stronger Pound 4 Pound), More Aggressive, Mentally Tougher. The Aforementioned Attributes Along With Trainers That Had 60 Plus Years In Some Cases Of Experience Is Why Every Fight Was Of A Higher Caliber. I disagree. You had excellent champions, journeymen, and tomato cans in every era. There are handful of fighters in every era that stand out that would be competitive no matter when they fought in history.
I think the main difference is the expansion of other amateur sports. Boxing is a TOUGH way to make a living, but in the 30s-60s, it was immensely popular and lots of spectacular US athletes went into boxing. As basketball and football have expanded in popularity and provided increasingly amounts of popularity, college scholarships and professional opportunities, boxing has declined in this country. Today, the many of best American athletes dream of excelling in other sports,.our amateur programs have declined, and more great boxers come from other countries
Judges outside both scored for Hurricane based on his aggression, but Mercante, who was actually closest to the action, scored for Benton, who was cracking Carter with short shots inside.

It’s always upsetting to me when I hear of someone who was convicted of a crime without substantial evidence and they serve many years until they realize he was innocent. You can’t get back those years.
That's where you guys are mistaken. He was never acquitted for those murders. In fact, the evidence was quite strong against him. He was convicted twice, then on appeal a judge found some impropriety and left it up to the state for a third trial. They decided that after such a long time witnesses were would few and far and their memories weren't as good. So, they decided it wasn't worth it and he was let go. Don't believe that garbage movie.

Benton was definitely the better fighter. He just chose not to be aggressive a lot of the time for some reason. Funny thing is when he boxed guys aggressively , he usually did pretty good. Who knows.
Ironically, Lou Duva screwed Georgie out of his title shot, he was supposed to fight Dick Tiger for MW title, giardello got the shot, Duva was the Match maker apparently

Not really. Benton popularized the Michigan/Philly shell defense but he is NOT the creator of it. The style/techniques already exists as early as 40's in Philadelphia. The style was created to compensated the lack of stamina training that most Philadelphian amateur (and some professional) boxers problem during that time. Most of them drive cabs so they have little time to do some road works. They created this technique to conserve energy.
But in reality, Philly shell are more like an evolved form of the shoulder roll defense which already exists much, much earlier. There are counts that the great master Joe Gabs uses shoulder roll. Sugar Ray Robinson also is a master of Philly shell defense and the one who actually taught James Toney of this defense.

Gans did not use the “Philly shell” he was just a counter puncher who ducked and whatnot he was just fast and quick pretty much.he didn’t use his hips combined with the shell defense itself, were talkin standing there bein able to block a combination of punches using your shoulders arms and hands covering the body along with hip movement turning the body, Benton did do just that, yes they changed the style but definitely Whitaker was trained by Benton and pernell and others like Toney took it into their own style of it( Toney combined his with his he bob n weave motion to the side)

Most people don't know him, that he invented The Philly shoulder roll. Floyd Mayweather Stole it, didn't give credit to George Benton . Benton was even a better trainer
annoying, he also doesnt give roy jones credit, when you watch mayaweather early in his career, he uses long gaurd, hands down alot also, almost like Roy jones, mayweather is basically a mix of roy jones and george benton especially in the first half of his career

Hurricane won split decision was a close battle, but Hurricane out-punched Benton. Benton needed the win, too.
