    Anything not named Trinitron flies under the radar a bit, but these Toshiba AFs really are gold. I dig the angles on the chassis and the two tone silver looks dope imo. Like you said, very sharp picture for a shadow mask. And for the truly space-challenged they're somewhat lighter and shallower than a same size Trinitron.
    You got a little lucky with the nice geometry on that one! My AF isn't that perfect.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's a crap shoot with geometry and these flat screens. I really want to find a flat with completely fucked geometry and try and fix it on video. I think pretty much all of it can be corrected. At least with a Sony.

    I have a 27" which has always been mine and a 20" which I got for free. Both of them have geometry issues and I don't have the knowledge or feel comfortable working on them but I still think they're great TVs and use them pretty often. The picture quality is outstanding and the color is so beautiful and vibrant, especially on my 27". One of my buddies found a 27" and he knew that I liked mine so he got it and is also very happy with it.

    Good vid Riggel. Looks like a solid set. At this point I think the conversation about the differences between the major brands/models is becoming less important than just the condition of the set. I’ve gotten 2 D-Series and both looked like ass. Just worn out. Had a couple of Sony’s. One looked great, the other terrible. Picked up a “low end” Sylvania 13” made by Funai that looks fantastic, but if I had listened to the consensus I never would have picked it up since those get dunked on so hard. It looks good because it was just some guest room set that was hardly ever used. There was a time, I guess 5-10 years ago when you were pretty much guaranteed a good pickup if the set was at least a mid-late 90s or older. But now all these sets are getting long in the tooth. A 2002 is 20 years old at this point. Damn. I don’t even bother with 90s sets anymore unless I can try them out first.

    • @spencer6891
      @spencer6891 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One more thing, you can actually check the hours on these Toshibas. Off the top of my head I think you hold down volume on the set and press either 6 or 9 on the remote. The hours are displayed in hexadecimal so you need to google a hex converter and that will tell you hours of use. I had 2 Toshibas, one is a 20AF46 that was an RV set and is one of my best looking sets. Had like 1500 hours on it. The other was so tired I had to max out the brightness and contrast to get it to look decent and it had buzzing speakers. Checked the hours and it was like 28,000. Laid it to rest at the local recycle center.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@spencer6891 "Laid it to rest" haha. Yeah. You have to know when it's time to bury your dead.
      It took me awhile to come around to how important low hours are for image quality. I think it's one of those things where you need to be in the hobby for awhile and look at a bunch of different sets until you figure it out.
      I tried doing that remote trick to check the hours on my af43 and couldn't get it to work. I have to do some eldritch button inputs to even enter the service menu on that one. I think you press mute 4 times on the remote and hold it down on the last button press and then press menu on the tv. Then the letter "C" appears on the screen. Then you press menu one more time on the TV. WTF.

    Toshiba 27AF44 just sitting on OfferUp, one picture of the front and it looks immaculate, unfortunately it’s a bad seller. Too lazy to take any sample pictures at all, too lazy to answer any questions, will happily let it sit at $100 for months and the description is just “Works, No Remote”. One of my pet peeves is lazy, entitled sellers that refuse to put a single quality pic of their CRT up, refuse to even respond to thoughtful and respectful questions, and yet want $100 for their TV, no questions asked. For all I know it could have shit geometry or a weak tube or bad caps. I guess it will just have to sit there

      The only resolution that tv accepts is 480i/240p. You need to find a way to have your pc send that resolution to your tv. I use a sofware program called crtemudriver with an old atx graphics card and a vga to component transcoder. It's a pain to setup but works really good. There might be a better way now. I set it up like 4 years ago. Good luck.

    Great vid Riggel. Funny story, somebody just posted a Trinitron KV-27FS120 on Offerup but are delusional enough to want $300. Somebody dumped the exact same model to the curb down the street from me and it’s just been sitting there for about a week and a half now. Hello, your video is amazing, I have a 27af45 and I thought it would be my definitive set for retrogaming, but I was wrong.
    That wobble, flicker, interference in the dark backgrounds you show at 6:01 is very distracting. I thought it was a capcitor problem, but it's not like that, searching the internet, I realize that at least 6 people have this type of problem with the AF and nobody has found the solution.
    It seems to be a problem with the chroma chip.
    I have tried capacitors, changing cables, joining ground points etc.

      They take YPbPr component but the image is shifted to the side and stretched horizontally at 240p. It appears to be the Tri-Level sync issue mentioned in HD Retrovision’s “Sync Jitter” write-up even though that is only supposed to apply to HDTVs. It does it on every Toshiba Colorstream CRT I’ve ever seen. Perhaps it’s worse for consoles with Sync Jitter (NESRGB/SNES) but I dunno.
      A typical 240p game will have important elements pushed off the left and right sides… more than typical overscan. Because it’s horizontally stretched you can’t correct it with centering controls alone.

      It’s not the cables. It’s sync jitter from the consoles with 240p in the Colorstream input. Definitely check out the article because they explain it very well with oscilloscope animations and everything. I do have the revised cables as well as a suite of RGB and Extron equipment. Even an SNES with the YPbPr-capable encoder and a custom cable will do this on a late Toshiba CRT with Colorstream YPbPr inputs.
      The Toshiba Colorstream inputs sync off the rising edge of the sync pulse instead of the falling edge as defined by SMPTE-170M and CEA-770-2.D. The rising edge is jittery on certain consoles like NES and SNES since the display equipment is supposed to be referencing the more-consistent falling edge anyway. Alas, HD YPbPr component uses a different kind of sync called “Tri-Level Sync,” which is more noise-resistant but lazy video circuit engineers just switched to using the rising edge for all resolutions as a shortcut to supporting both. No need to detect the resolution and special-case anything… as long as those 15khz sources don’t have jittery rising edges on the sync.
      Syncing off the rising edge is correct for HD YPbPr component but not for 240p/480i YPbPr component. Not supposed to do it for 480p either but most HDTVs do. Try Final Fantasy V with the RGB2YPbPr transcoder and an unmodified SNES (no DeJitter mod). NESRGB has built-in DeJitter but it used to have the same problem.

      @@riggel8804 not really any difference that I can tell. I saw that MLIG and Game Sack had these CRTs with the tally light. I got it free off FB and Craigslist and I never had to change any settings for the classic games I play.

    Use that 16:9 setting for Wii games -- its awesome.

      @@riggel8804 I think low definition 16:9 is the best way to play Wii. Don't overlook Sin & Punishment Star Successor -- I think this might be the most unique game on the system that makes intuitive use of the motion controls; its like having your own Time Crisis arcade. I have Resident Evil 4 in my queue as well.

      @@drewirons2646 I have a wii and I've fired it up a couple times. It is absolutely gorgeous on a crt. I think the games run in 480 i and not 240p but they still look amazing.
      I have trouble getting into the games on the system though. I got bored playing lugi's mansion and the couple other games I tried.
      The hacking scene on the wii looks awesome and I would like to get into that someday.
      Thanks for the game recommendation. I know that Mark MSX speaks highly of Sin and Punishment as well.

      @@riggel8804 that's right, its primarily 480i. However, the native virtual console and retroarch can do 240p, although you would probably rather play on original hardware. I imagine there are some hacks that can get 240p output for certain games sine the system technically supports it.
      One thing that sucks is Mega Man 9 and 10 (probably my favorites on the system) are 480i 4:3 ONLY, no 480p support, and I heard the modern ports also aren't scaled correctly. I did see someone use the retrotink pro to deinterlace MM9 an display in 240p, so theres always that option.

      @@drewirons2646 I've found that games designed to play at 480i look just fine. I think the 480i got a bad rap because of poor arcade ports, primarily on the ps2, that run 240p games at 480i. Those games look really bad. On the other hand Mario Galaxy on the wii is beautiful.
