    Quick note- this doesn’t support 1080p- only up to 1080i. 720p as well. Sorry about that- I wasn’t reading things correctly.

      @Defensive_Wounds ปีที่แล้ว +17

      This it must be after the 1988 HD CRT TV that came out which only had 1080i, 720 didn't exist back then. My 88kg beast is only 480i but still bloody decent!!!

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@markus19999 Yes it does- the bummer of course is that the PS4 as near as I can tell can’t output analog video. It’s all about the quality of the conversion from digital to analog, and I don’t feel like I have a particularly good pure converter. PS3 analog at 1080i looks very good though.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1080i is pretty close to native resolution in MUSE, it shows 1035 visible interleaved lines after all, it can just dump a few out of screen and it's good to go, tho I wouldn't doubt it being able to show all 1080 either being a newer model.
      The MUSE signal itself is absolutely weird, a sort of digital + analog combination that somehow has 4 interleaving stages.
      I think if you want to see native MUSE signals, your best bet would be a Japanese W-VHS deck, that or a Hi-Vision LD player but that would likely be even harder to get working.

    The remote goes up to 15 because most Japanese TV viewers do so via terrestrial broadcasts and pretty much everywhere I’ve been in Japan, stations tend to broadcast within the first 15 channels. This lets you get to any channel with a single button press.

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  ปีที่แล้ว +24

      So that’s why! Wild- thanks for letting me know! The 12 also doubles as the “enter” key when saving settings in the system calibration osd. Is that standard on older JDM CRTs too?

    • @irtbmtind89
      @irtbmtind89 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it's also because the satellites used for analog DBS broadcasting in Japan had 15 transponders (though more than half were used for feeds, not broadcasting, and I think they were spaced in a way to not require the TV to switch the LNB polarity). The VHF bandplan in Japan has 12 channels, and even today most Japanese TV remotes go from 1 to 12.

    My buddy I served with was stationed in Japan. I bought the TV from him in 2008 for $100 to play all my retro games on. My son now uses it to stream cartoons and play his original xbox I modded. We dont have the remote. I was able to get an old universal remote working and with google translate I made a small guide on the settings. Its great to see this TV being talked about.
    I still have my old Toshiba HD 32" Tubed TV, First TV I ever bought myself. But the power supply went poof and its setting in a storage unit.

    Speaking of MUSE or Hi-vision. I remember NHK had a dedicated channel named BSHi (NHKデジタル衛星ハイビジョン, translated into NHK Digital Satellite High Vision) to broadcast Hi-Vision programs between 2000 to 2007. Before that NHK tried to broadcast Hi-Vision signals in High Vision Broadcast on channel 9 (ハイビジョン試験放送). The program that was shown in HD the most was Kohaku Uta Gassen (NHK紅白歌合戦, translated into NHK Red and White singing contest), which was from 1989 and onwards.

    In 2000, I was able to get ahold of a Sony Japanese 16:9 TV through my workplace.We had a lot of analog A/V equipment for home media demos and rather than recycle or dispose of the gear my manager was able to arrange an extended "loan". The TV was a PowerWide labeled model so from around 1995 or 1996 and was capable of up to 480p display. The 480p capability was handy for those Dreamcast and original Xbox games that supported. By 2006, I had upgraded to a Sony RPTV and gave the Sony PowerWide TV to a friend. I never checked in to so see what happened with it. I imagine it would be a collector's item now.

    The reason light guns don't work properly with 240p/480i content is that the TV line doubles them digitally to raise the horizontal frequency to 31.5 kHz, close to the horizontal frequency of 1035i. Making a large CRT work across greatly differing horizontal frequencies was difficult for a number of reasons, not the least dealing with the electrical properties of the deflection coils.
    The line doubling not only throws off the horizontal detection for the light gun completely , but the delay from the line doubling throws off vertical detection as well a bit.

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I’m just thankful 480p light gun stuff works- though it’d be neat to get 240p stuff working with some kind of scaler.

    • @fungo6631
      @fungo6631 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That could had been avoided using a line buffer instead of a frame buffer. VGA does that thing with video modes lower than 400 lines, it line doubles them. 320x200 mode 13h is actually 320x400.
      Instead of a frame of lag, you'd have a scanline or two of lag. It was purely an oversight, seeing that OSSC line doubling mitigates the issue.

    I remember the excitement I felt when I saw my first HiVison TV at an electronics store when I was in elementary school. I wanted to have such a TV in my home.
    At the time, HiVision was broadcast on a satellite channel, but I could not watch it on our NTSC TV.
    HiVision TVs were expensive, so our TV was a wide-screen TV with a built-in M-N(Muse-NTSC) converter . (The picture quality is not HiVision).
    Later, digital broadcasting started and LCD flat-panel TVs were introduced, allowing us to enjoy TV in high-definition HDTV. However, I feel the picture quality of CRT HiVisions seemed to be better.

      I may after getting some other testing things squared. Audio is pretty subjective, but the sound quality is fairly excellent. I find speakers in TVs to frequently sound kind of "boxed" and muffled, but this one is really well tuned. The audio showstopper is the subwoofer though- I can't believe how tight and impactful it is. Genuinely directionless, you wouldn't know it's within the TV unless you hunted around for a bit.

    Most interesting Sony set. Never saw one of those or even a picture of one. I have been a “Sony TV only” guy since my 3 bedroom house was built in 1984. All rooms including the master bath have a Sony TV, all on a master antenna system. Not that I really use any except the 20” CTR hung in my shop. As time progressed I upgraded some sets to newer Sony CRT sets. Last CRT I bought was a 32” XBR2, it has built in 8 ohm surround spkr outputs as well and a whole lot of inputs and outputs. The set probably has 100 hrs use maximum since new, and it isn’t used now as I’m rarely in that room. A much newer 40” Sony hangs in my kitchen dining area now, it gets most use, primarily TH-cam thru a 4k Roku player, which is how I’m viewing your channel. I see a small high resolution CRT monitor on the left in your garage 😃 I have a similar one. Great to come across your channel.

    Hey Dorfus, just want to say a HUGE thank you for your videos on this TV, and and an even bigger thanks for sharing the method to enter the service menu! I managed to get my hands on a very similar rare model (KW-32HD5) and its an absolute beauty! It's multiformat and it has VGA and all, but its also a curved screen so quite unique in that regard. Your videos on this TV inspired me to pursue the difficult endeavor of getting my hands on one of these rare beasts, and with a lot of good fortune I managed to succeed. However the TV I got has pretty bad geometry unfortunately so iv been trying to find the service menu code to try to fix it and almost gave up hope, but I came to your video again and to my delight found it in the description and it worked! :D only issue now is to understand what the hell im doing in these menus, there seems to be a LOT of parameters and theyr all written in 4 letter codes so I'm scared to mess something up. Iv done service menu geometry tweaking on a Panasonic CRT before, but there was only a handful of settings on that and it was pretty straight forward compared to this one. Do you have any advice on how I mite approach this? Is there a guide of some kind that explains what each setting does? Thanks again man!

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Yeah, the codes are really tricky to figure out. The one you have to avoid at all costs is "AGE" which basically burns in the TV, and will reduce its lifespan. I generally followed a list I found on Neo Geo.com's forums, it's fairly old. I'll post them below this comment. Many are different, but you can find similar ones or nearly identical ones in your TV hopefully.

    I wish I had this tv! Mine is just a 40inch 16:9 SD CRT tv. It weighs 88KG and has stereo speakers, RGB component input, S-video/SVHS input, composite I can't remember if it has scart or other inputs for video but it does have optical audio and headphone 3.5mm input for audio as well as the white and red for composite audio. The features on the remote are pretty decent for a budget CRT like this! I bought it in 2006 new from Kmart! LCDs were taking off but they were expensive and looked like crap for viewing angles so I bought this one. Good decision even though everyone for years said 'why don't I just throw it out?' It still works perfectly to this day!!! Those LCD tvs they had were thrown out over a decade and a half ago, cheapo shite technology LCD was/is. So bad at playing older tech on them too you NEED a CRT to get accurate quality of the source material...lol

I thought there maybe some colour differential differences, like maybe the colours not being uniform on the screen, but it looks amazing here. Personally, I am not a fan of CRT and would of definitely passed it by, but I am really glad that someone is able to enjoy it. Even though it seems that this TV is actually 1080i, analog support for 1080p (YPbPr and VGA) was actually pretty common among professional displays of the early '00s, but usually there was a downscalar in the display. Those CRT sets with native 480p passthrough are true gems. Many seem to like doubling to 960p as well, which I'm not sure if that adds any lag since it's not using the passthrough mode, but I'd think 960p force upscaled to 1080p (or whatever the max is for this and certain XBR models) would be negligible - no deinterlacing to do and it's a small increment compared to the TV starting with 240p/480i

    Great video! A couple notes:
    Showing direct 240p signals like Chrono Trigger on mostly static screens doesn't really tell the whole story. So it would be better to record it motion, to look for motion artifacts. Later Sony HDTVs definitely treated 240p signals as 480i, which means deinterlacing artifacts in motion.
    As for 240p lightgun games: since you're playing with a MiSTer, you most likely could set the output to 480p, which might let the lightgun games work. 480p seems to be lag-free on this set, based on the Dreamcast behavior. But I'm not sure if the doubled line frequency would stop the games from working

      I’ll have to try outputting at 480p on the mister! Can’t hurt. 240p has no motion artifacts- I was mostly trying to show the macro image of the doubling I was seeing. Composite input and svideo does scale to 1080i, and looks pretty bad.

    You might not know about it, but the US had an extremely similar model, which is the KW-34HD1 (released in 1998 and I believe costed the same price), which does some things this one can do, like 1080i component video (3 ports I think). Really, the only major differences is that it's 2 inches smaller, and there is no VGA input, but apart from all that it looks and performs almost the same. There have been a few people who have even sold these online on sites like offer up, but no one has ever uploaded a video of one so far as it's as rare as the one you have, if not, rarer. You should check out this TV if you can by searching the model online.

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fun fact- this HiVision is actually 34” by normal USA standards. That’s the viewable on this. While I think that KW-34HD1 has that interesting proprietary DVI port, does it scale everything to 1080i? That would be my main concern.

    • @blazuma111
      @blazuma111 ปีที่แล้ว

      @dorfus Wait, you knew about this TV? Nice, as almost no one does! Anyway, the manual doesn't specify that, but it does say that there is one component video input that is labeled "for use of 1080i signal only" while the same is for the DVI port. I believe that the other inputs scale to 480i. Also, I believe that DVI has better clarity than component video, as I can verify that as I used to have a Mitsubishi 1080i rear projection CRT TV that had a DVI port and it did look better than the component inputs, making the US model have one major advantage of the Japanese model, if of course it can be used with an HDMI to DVI adapter, which I don't see why not.

    How does this compare to the pro-feel line of hd crts or qualia?

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s been a long time since I’ve handled a qualia product, but there are similarities. The actual build quality is on par, but the design isn’t as “out there” as the qualia products that would come after it.

    Ragingly jealous. It's basically a 36" CRT widescreen computer monitor. I assume it's doing 100hz on all the other inputs.

    Would love one of these. I collect Laserdiscs (as well as play retro game consoles like Dreamcast). I have a MUSE Hi-Vision Laserdisc compatible player which can play HD Laserdiscs (HLD-X9). I need to run the MUSE signal through a separate MUSE decoder to get a component HD 1080i output that works with a modern HD screen. Looks like your model has the decoder built in.

    • @dorfus
      @dorfus  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tomlee80 yep! It does. I’d love to see actual MUSE content on it- I’ve only run 60p 1080i rips of muse content. It’d be interesting to see if there’s a difference between that and the actual MUSE decoder. But hey! I’m always open to offers on it- it’s just so heavy and would be horrible to ship without an experienced mover.

    I had a TV similar to this back in 09. It was 4:3 though. But the front was flat and it had an HDMI port. And yeah it was easily 200 lbs. Unfortunately, I made the brain-dead mistake of packing it right next to a 4x12 speaker cab when I moved and I could never get the color right again.

  • @923EON

    I got one of the early 16:9 CRTs by LG called "Infineon". It had component but only accepted 576p. It also had a PC RGB which accepted 1080i. It was also 100Hz and was capable of 12-PIP and Split Channel PiP. It was white in colour with a silver speaker grille at the bottom which was very loud and bassy! It had a stainless steel top panel with controls and everytime it turned on it used to Degause the screen. One thing that sucked, it would always go to Channel 1 analogue and not remember the last input it was on. I originally wanted the Sony but it was too expensive. This TV was $4000 to buy and I had to finance it. Plasma's were out at the time but they were over $10,000!! My set was 32"

    That CRT looks beautiful and like it came out not long ago! It doesn't look like it was released years ago, seriously. And the fact that it supported 1080i when it came out is insane. Enjoy it. I prefer the 15" to 20" CRT screen size though since I use it on a computer desk and play close to it.

      It’s wild how much of their design language for the next 20 years was established in 1998. I will admit I use a 27” and a 15” more, since they’re in more comfortable rooms.

    Were HD CRTs always using the trinitron design (fell out of patent in the later years and other companies started using it), or did they use shadow mask for HD-CRT?

    • @lancepage1914
      @lancepage1914 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All Trinitron tubes including WEGA, Hi Vision, all Sony HD CRTs are exclusively Aperture Grille. Only Sony made them in their own factories. No corporation on Earth could justify paying Sony royalties to use their Aperture Grille technology because the factories would have to be fitted and kitted out to specifically make Aperture Grille CRTs. They couldn't just make Shadow Mask CRTs one day then Aperture Grille the next with the same equipment and processes because the tools to make CRT at scale costs billions of dollars of infrastructure. Any monitor that wasn't Sony branded but Aperture Grille CRT was still a Sony made CRT.

    • @msd5808
      @msd5808 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lancepage1914 It's hard to understand. I thought some of the later model flat CRTs were putting out more light, like Trinitron, using a similar design, like Diamondtron from Mitsubishi, and I had heard it said that IBM's ThinkVision CRT monitors were aperture grill and some of Dell's or NEC's monitors.

      @seraphinax6449 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lancepage1914 After the Trinitron patents expired there were quite a few third-party companies that made Aperture Grille TVs such as Mitsubishi who made "Diamondtron" tubes, mostly for CRT monitors like my NEC MultiSync FE-1250+.

    I have a Pioneer HLD-X9 HiVision/Muse laserdisc player which would connect directly to the muse inputs and
    with a HiVision disc give you an excellent HD picture.
    I have to use an external decoder to get the same results, like anything that was only sold in Japan the players
    decoders and discs were very expensive, even today the discs sell for very high prices, and i only have a few of them.

    I'll add that I was young and didn't understand fully what I had on my hands. I couldn't tell you anything about it's different features as I actually learned a whole lot watching your video.
