100%. I also see imposter syndrome. She made herself very small and doubled down with vocal runs. As a buddy once said, when in doubt, simplify and get back in key.
I’ve been a musician for 50 of my 60 years and have seen a lot. In fact I have seen singers reduced to a mess live from drugs and alcohol. Van Halen at the US festival in 83, Roth was an unmitigated disaster vocally and as was Ozzy in Irvine, 1982 shortly after the death of his guitarist. As luck would have both of these shows were filmed for MTV and both vocal tracks were clearly dubbed as these guys were too wasted to sing anywhere near their usual competence There are different levels of drunk, including black out drunk, and every person reacts differently and fails or functions differently. So none of us are qualified to say if she was wasted or not, and how much of a train wreck she is capable of being, or not. Her reactions and behaviors could be very different than others with drinking issues. I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ Here’s what I do know. The star spangled banner IS difficult. However it’s not as difficult as is being framed here. It doesn’t destroy you from the opening, it exposes you later in the song if you don’t have the range to deal with it. This woman was a mess from the opening line, tons of bad technique as was pointed out by this vocal expert My point is the star spangled banner can expose a limited singer but it can not change any remotely competent singer into THIS dumpster fire. She either can’t sing full stop, or there’s something else factoring in here or a mix of things. You don’t have to be a belter queen to sing this song as was suggested here (teenage Taylor Swift sang it beautifully at a baseball game) Btw, Whitney Houston lip synced that iconic Super Bowl performance 😂
People have said it’s really challenging to hear yourself in a stadium. I imagine that’s true. It doesn’t appear that she has in-ear monitors so that can contribute to being pitchy. That being said, she sounds totally unrehearsed. Like someone woke her up and put a mic in her hand and said “go!” Furthermore, while the range of the SSB is challenging, it’s all in the major key and most pros can go up and down the scale/arpeggio from muscle memory (even when drunk). Like I said before, I believe this is her Milli Vanilli reckoning.
Dude, I could have put ear muff's on, got out of bed, dropped it down a key or two and listened to it in my own head, and sung it more in tune than that. I agree with the assessment. This was more than being drunk. Definitely some technique, some stylistic choices, good catch on the pitch correction, alcohol and perhaps some other substances. All in all, the perfect storm for a night mare on a huge stage. I actually feel bad for her.
I'll just listen to Janis Joplin performances and call it good. Drunk or not, Ingrid Andress is only capable of delivering a stylized performance of songs with an extremely limited range of notes (like most singers pushed by the corporate entertainment industry these days). I don't have the knowledge to say that you are right, but I have to say your conclusions are in line with my initial thoughts. Drunk singers don't forget how to sing like this in my experience.
I think she's never had to sing without accompaniment, and once you go off track it's hard to find your way back. Also, maybe warm ups before she went out, or practicing the piece that same day. I'm sure she did practice, but probably the day before, or something. The thing with vocals is that the way your voice acts can change day to day. As a bass-baritone I really like singing two different things. Old Bing Crosby style stuff, and early 90s Grunge. Each one of those things requires a different approach. If I start off singing Grunge, it's going to be difficult to bring it back down to Crooner music later onthe same day. I basically have to retrain my voice to get back to the silky smooth Bing stuff.
I stopped drinking cold turkey and it's been.... 10 years on July 23 (my last day was my birthday party, and I didn't hold back. Even had all my friends sign my last bottle of Wild Turkey). I reckon she's a singer who has good days and bad days, and the bad days are bad. Probably, as you say, she needs some appropriate vocal training. This was a bad day. I also reckon I saw her panic after that first high note didn't go as planned, and then the anxiety kicked in, about 30 seconds or less into the song. And when you are anxious and panicking in the middle of singing a song, your breath control goes out the window. And the rest is history. If she was also drunk, that would make it worse IMO.
SSB is an incredibly hard aing to sing well, which is probably why attendees sing so whisper-softly; we are relying on a "belter" to do it for us (O Canada is much easier, which is also why Canadians can sing it loud and proud, as they should. Amy Winehouse sounds so drunk when she does drink and sing but she was always able to hit her notes and keep her beat it was weird but she sounded good
Ingrid may have had a drink or two but the issue was it seemed to me and other TH-cam folks is that she began at a higher register and as a result could not reach the notes. Had she rehearsed more it appears to me she would have greatly benefitted from this coaching and practice and not had the debacle she had. My opinion: not enough practice and better coaching would have reduced the impact of this fiasco.
i don't know which is worse, being drunk or not. i have a feeling she's using the drunk card just as an excuse. if she WAS drunk, i call that highly unprofessional.
Fascinating analysis. I love a good whiskey or two. But I have learned I just can't do it and play out effectively (the hard way). As a Nashville guy, I can tell you the culture here lends itself to playing out with a few drinks to take the edge off and fit the country music vibe. She is a relatively new artists and may still be learning this lesson. I have seen some amazing artists play writers rounds that sounded like shit after they drank too much either before or during the show. Add to that....many artists come to Nashville having developed a cool vocal tone but are often untrained and don't realize they are doing some really harmful things to their voice to achieve their tone. Just look at how many people in Nashville end up having vocal surgery. Nashville loves rasp and breathy twang. If done the wrong way, it can fry your vocal cords. Music row doesn't care. Fans love it. There are a 1000 new artists coming to town every day. Blow your voice out, they'll just make another one. Moral of the story......don't try to drink a ton and sing, and get a good vocal coach. You will be singing when your friends are done.
@@Bls-of1ld man I appreciate your thoughts, but it would have made a difference. Would it have been good? Would it have been better? Who knows. But it would have made a difference. Alcohol is a voice killer and I promise you that you will not find even the most famous artists that will tell it’s not.
Hi Tim - thanks for your expert input here. I appreciate your thoughts AND I surely tend to agree with you (I am not a singer, however). This is hugely the wrong song choice for her to sign. I, too, send her good wishes in getting better/sober. My question is: would she not have practiced and heard herself? Boy oh boy - I just don't get this situation (for a couple of good reasons).
I think she doesn’t have the talent to be nominated for four Grammys. I think this is how she typically sounds without electronic manipulation. Four Grammys with no talent! Wow! What did she have to do to get nominated? One positive thing about this particular performance is that she finished it although I kind of wish she’d stopped.
As a singer who has had formal vocal training, it is her simply having zero idea how to sing the song. She needed a coach and she needed to practice and she should have known that. Performance is serious and she winged it and she paid the price by sounding unprepared.
I wanted to believe it was an echo problem (I’ve had terrible “renditions” due to echos and loud background noise myself), but the key changes and tweaks were above and beyond, so the alcohol made sense. Then it came out that they had a sound check, which would have uncovered the echo problem. Good breakdown btw, appreciated the analysis 🙌🏼
This and Fil’s (WOP) analysis of this video are excellent. Shit, I never realised that the autotune went through the mic. I hate autotune and I think it should not be used. I would rather hear less than perfect vocal performance…not in this case though. One of my favourite performances of SSB is Zooey Deschanel’s. I adore her voice anyway and I love your national anthem (I despise my own…Advance Australia Fair. 🤢
@@TimWelchVocalStudio … there are two different videos on TH-cam….(they must have thought that she did a good job). She manages the low notes beautifully.
You’re wrong - there is no live auto tuning in this - see wings of pegasus review. I wrongly assumed the same on first listen because it is so off. Seeing the pitch plotted makes it clear there is no tuning.
@@Clarkish just watched it some of it. I’m not sure mapping out the pitch is going to be able to show if it was corrected or not. I use those softwares too. It won’t show a digital artifact especially with the complexity of the delay of the stadium also adding to it. I was just hearing some digitized sounding moments of it. Could maybe be the feedback of the stadium delay coming back in the mic but it definitely sounded like something artificial was trying to happen.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio the pitch mapping absolutely does reveal no tuning - the note is not being snapped into place, intervals are off and she is fairly consistently off A440 pitch.
Why would a so-called professional singer do this? Did she even try to sing the song before this performance? If she did practice, was everyone who heard her prior to this lying to her? I can't think of anything more disrespectful than performing/attempting to sing the National Anthem when you can't at this type of venue.
Agree with everything Tim says but also her singing in that baby-style voice didn't help her either. This feels like an ultra "adult" song. Tim, I would love your take on that baby style that so many young female artists seem to take on as a style choice (along with weird pronunciations of words).
I've known many a vocalist who would have some jack or other alcohol and sang rather great. Perhaps if she sang in bars or in her case honky-tonk for a dozen years she might pass mustard. Although in today's bars people pay more attention to their phones 😢.
I don’t think being drunk at the time was her issue - it’s more the compounding of issues from being in the throws of alcoholism for a long time. You don’t sign up for rehab because of a one night drunk. Her voice and technique has been compromised by bad lifestyle choices over a period of time inclusive of alcoholism.
If you wanna know if you can sing the US national anthem in a stadium in front of 50k people you should ask yourself a question. Could you have done a duet with Meatloaf and kept pace?If yes then you can probably try it.
Ktcarl, I think you nailed it. Once she wandered off-pitch, a "bad case of nerves" kicked in, and it only gets worse when that happens. Tim's thoughts about "real-time pitch correction" are interesting too. If that technology was in fact being utilized, it may have hurt more than it helped.
I’m not sure what would have motivated that, if that’s the case. She sounds great on stuff in her lane, she’s not the type of singer who does well on the SSB. You need to be a powerhouse for that with a big range.
She sounds like a rapper, and country singer bundled in one. I’ve listened to her music, and fail to see any greatness or even a small amount. It’s okay if you desire to defend her, however, drunk or not she cannot sing. Defending a drunk or feeling sorry for one is ridiculous. Do you feel sorry for a drunk that has killed an innocent person? Drunk is drunk. 🤔 I hope she didn’t drive to the stadium. Whoever let her embarrass herself, is as guilty as she was. Look the way she was dressed, too. She looked like she had just got out of the cow field. Shame on her for attempting this. There are so many singers to choose from, and they chose her. 🙄
She doesn't have the vocal range to sing the song Bet it didn't sound great in rehearsal either Not surprised she was nervous but the booze didn't really help her
I personally love sohyang’s rendition of the U.S. national anthem(2014 NBA), so I was listening to it and happened to see this. Honestly, I think this is too much… If there was at least some respect for the national anthem as a singer, this is not it…
I mean, in my opinion, if you can already sing and have been born and raised in America where we hear the SSB beat into us from a young age, I really fail to believe how you could mess this up so badly. The only time I have seen people sing SSB so badly is when they already sound bad. Fergie’s sounded better, Roseanne is a comedian, hers was meant to sound bad. As far as not being able to sing SSB, I get that this song is NOT easy to sing but to sound this bad means you had to TRY to sound bad (PR stunt), or you just really can’t sing or perhaps she was drunk and sick like physically ill? How her team let her get up there is incredible. They should have said she was feeling unwell and brought in the backup.
this comment section is proof that Whitney Houston’s version of it it’s so legendary that it will probably rein supreme as far as any of us could ever imagine that’s how good it was and because of that everybody else is pale in comparison
lol even the autotune they tried to implement couldn't help. Hey Ingrid just take accountability for it, and stop with the "I was drunk" stuff. You can admit to not being a good singer.
I went back and listened to some of her music. Limited voice and heavily relies on auto tune Not to be mean, but she's average at best. And by relying on auto tune and tech, she will never properly develop her voice.
that never happened to you but alcohol has a different effect on everyone, i can barely sing when I drink even if i'm not drunk, my vocal cords are inflamed and dried out and i don't have the energy or stamina to hit those notes. She's not the best singer out there but she's not a bad singer. It could be alcohol coupled with sleep deprivation, your state of mind can heavily affect how you sing. Maybe you're just someone who was functioning when you drank and she's not.
As someone with zero musical knowledge or aptitude, I appreciated this insightful breakdown.
Thanks!

i don't know which is worse, being drunk or not. i have a feeling she's using the drunk card just as an excuse. if she WAS drunk, i call that highly unprofessional.
I agree with you.
Excellent comment and great points.
It would of.made no difference drunk or not
@@Bls-of1ld man I appreciate your thoughts, but it would have made a difference. Would it have been good? Would it have been better? Who knows. But it would have made a difference. Alcohol is a voice killer and I promise you that you will not find even the most famous artists that will tell it’s not.
Sundreamer, I think the singer in Greta Van Fleet could benefit from a talk with you! 😊
@@williamj.sheehan2001 hahaha!
Yeah, I wonder if there was a run-through or mic check. It’s common for there NOT to be a mic check for the SSB though.
You hit it on the nail. She doesn’t have the power house voice to handle this song.
The end...
Her songs require a different type of singing coordination than the SSB.
As a singer who has had formal vocal training, it is her simply having zero idea how to sing the song. She needed a coach and she needed to practice and she should have known that. Performance is serious and she winged it and she paid the price by sounding unprepared.
Enrico pallazzo!!!! Awesome!
😂
Dean Martin did it well.
Should react to Disturbed-Sound of Silence live version. Curious of what you think
Good one, I’ll add it to the list. Thanks.
Thanks! Yeah, the delay can be really tricky in stadiums to sing with.
Why are you believing her statement that she was drunk? And also mocking rehabilitation like it’s some summer camp.
Land of the freeze...
eee eee eez
Land of former NFL quarterback John Friesz.
Never heard her SSB!
@@TimWelchVocalStudio … there are two different videos on TH-cam….(they must have thought that she did a good job). She manages the low notes beautifully.
Great video
🙏🏼
The Cranberries song is when Dolores used a traditional Irish lament-style voice. It's a choice.
Yep, but so was Ingrid using it here.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio she deliberately used an Irish lament voice when singing the National Anthem? Or she can't sing? Neither option looks good, lol!
So they're just handing Grammys away to just anyone? Shoot, I can sing better than this chick.😂
Lol
@@KingCobra3849 I believe she is only Grammy nominated? And not for any of the vocal performance Grammys.
Agreed.
Agree with everything Tim says but also her singing in that baby-style voice didn't help her either. This feels like an ultra "adult" song. Tim, I would love your take on that baby style that so many young female artists seem to take on as a style choice (along with weird pronunciations of words).
I’ve talked about it a bit in the reactions I’ve done to Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish.
I've known many a vocalist who would have some jack or other alcohol and sang rather great. Perhaps if she sang in bars or in her case honky-tonk for a dozen years she might pass mustard. Although in today's bars people pay more attention to their phones 😢.
So are you saying that auto tune made her sound even more off key than she would’ve been without it?
I believe so, yes.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio interesting
@@SummerofKittyLove there’s no autotune on this
I don’t think being drunk at the time was her issue - it’s more the compounding of issues from being in the throws of alcoholism for a long time. You don’t sign up for rehab because of a one night drunk. Her voice and technique has been compromised by bad lifestyle choices over a period of time inclusive of alcoholism.
Sounds like she tried to do Fergie’s weird version of the star spangled banner and added bad singing to it.
5:48 this is what I thought at first listen
Kinda odd that our National Anthem is a song that is so hard to sing well. Who thought that was a good idea?
Check out Domi's reharmonization of this performance, she turns it into microtonal jazz.
lol I will. :)
Tour Sweden Ingrid Bergman..
If you wanna know if you can sing the US national anthem in a stadium in front of 50k people you should ask yourself a question. Could you have done a duet with Meatloaf and kept pace?If yes then you can probably try it.
Lol. Which one? Paradise by the Dashboard Lights?
Great video Tim. Ingrid just released a new song "Comeback" on our channel as well btw lol
Thanks! Oh wow, I’ll have to check that out.
At 6:57 mark
You see the : heeeeheheee 😂😂
I think the poor thing was terrified.
Idk man, drinking is pretty famous for causing bad choices lol, stylistic one included lol
Does she need voice lessons??? Isn't she a 4 time Grammy nominee 🤷♂️
Yeah…but…🤷🏻♂️
She sounds drunk and terrified.
Yeah she started to choke and it was done.
the autotune and pitching software is why I don't bother with so-called live concerts any more.
It’s definitely a thing now.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio yes, and it's not why I go to concerts and gigs. The last band I went to see was Snarky Puppy. No autotune, great gig.
Does this indicate that she didn’t practice on site before the actual
Performance? Would that be normal/standard?
I would love to know the actual answer to that, I would imagine if she did someone would’ve had footage of it.
Everything at this year's olympics 666 was a stuff up
How about asking a classical singer next time for National Anthem? OK, I know it was stupid proposal.....
OK, I correct my proposal: Ask some rapper to sing it.
Is it possible she did this on purpose? Not sure how her people could have allowed this to happen.
I’m not sure what would have motivated that, if that’s the case. She sounds great on stuff in her lane, she’s not the type of singer who does well on the SSB. You need to be a powerhouse for that with a big range.
You couldn't get drunk enough to sound that bad
@@SteveWestover-r7x I agree.
@@SteveWestover-r7xnot without forgetting the lyric and falling around for sure
She doesn't have the vocal range to sing the song
Bet it didn't sound great in rehearsal either
Not surprised she was nervous but the booze didn't really help her
Agreed
Well Tim.You briefly mentioned how you dealt with alcoholism and addiction before. What are your thoughts about her mocking rehabilitation?
Great point, it is even worse when considering that aspect of it.
I miss Whitney Houston.😢
It's not an either/or situation
She said it herself. She was drunk and on pills.
I personally love sohyang’s rendition of the U.S. national anthem(2014 NBA), so I was listening to it and happened to see this. Honestly, I think this is too much… If there was at least some respect for the national anthem as a singer, this is not it…
Yes, this was painful to listen to.
Voice lesson would help seems like she needed to take in more air ☹️🇺🇸
I agree.
this comment section is proof that Whitney Houston’s version of it it’s so legendary that it will probably rein supreme as far as any of us could ever imagine that’s how good it was and because of that everybody else is pale in comparison
She’s the one to beat!
It starts good..
Another vocal coach. There must be more vc's than plumbers in this world.
🤣 that would be an amazing world
I bet vocal coach costs less than a plumber 😅
She tried but gave up half way through.
Drunk is a lame ass excuse...own up to your bad performance I would say
Mabye relying on auto tune is letting non singers get famous, just a thought 🤔 it's obvious 😭
I know this is harsh, but that sounded like she was purposely trying to sound bad. My ears. It sounds like she is tone deaf to me.
Auto-tune cannot perform miracles. Looks like she doesn't know her limits.
It’s the lame gen Z marble mouth that most whisper singers do that irks me. Worse than the grunge yarl.
Moral of the story: She can't sing lol.
lol even the autotune they tried to implement couldn't help. Hey Ingrid just take accountability for it, and stop with the "I was drunk" stuff. You can admit to not being a good singer.
Honestly, I'd never even heard of her until this debacle. Talk about a bad first impression.
She wasn't drunk... Come on.. she just is not a singer...
I went back and listened to some of her music. Limited voice and heavily relies on auto tune
Not to be mean, but she's average at best. And by relying on auto tune and tech, she will never properly develop her voice.
Yep, not a SSB singer.
that never happened to you but alcohol has a different effect on everyone, i can barely sing when I drink even if i'm not drunk, my vocal cords are inflamed and dried out and i don't have the energy or stamina to hit those notes. She's not the best singer out there but she's not a bad singer. It could be alcohol coupled with sleep deprivation, your state of mind can heavily affect how you sing. Maybe you're just someone who was functioning when you drank and she's not.
Dreadful...... Beyond words
AUTOTUNE!!!!
What she did was atrocious 🤢
You are pausing too much.
Elvis could sing this song better than anyone.
