I saw Whitney in concert (1987), and was stunned -- and thrilled -- that not a single note was even the tiniest bit flat or sharp. After she passed, Lionel Ritchie recalled how they used to teasingly call her "the gift" because she'd go into studio to sing for a track and nail it in ONE take.

I’ve listened to the audio concerts from her first two tours and I haven’t found one with a single missed note or her ever taking a short, singing every song and always singing them differently. Although it was the same set list, each show took me on a different, thrilling ride! They also called her One-Take Houston per her bodyguard. He said the coffee would still be hot and she would be completely done recording. She said herself that she would sometimes do a second take to give the producer options lol. The GOAT!!!

Great reaction and analysis! Whitney nailed it perfectly. One thing that is often overlooked is the orchestral arrangement. The arranger was jazz great, John Clayton. He changed the time signature from 3/4 to 4/4 and modified the chord structure just enough to give you those goosebump moments. Combined with Whitney's voice and a great orchestra, this rendition hit the Trifecta of greatness. I love Chris Stapleton's version (and he's from my home state of Kentucky), but I enjoy Whitney's more.

Whitney does put a few riffs, runs and alternate notes in here and makes it her own, but the difference is that everyone else feels like they’re trying too hard to make it their own. Whitney makes it seem so effortless that it feels like the anthem has always been this incredible and it’s not, she changed the game forever and everyone who followed was trying to top what she did even though they never will

Nick, I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly with your assessment of the way she sings it--as it was written, pure and simple. The way you summed it up couldn't have been better--it wasn't about her or for her, but for the song itself, and what it means.
Then, as if that wasn't enough, as she was leaving the stage, there was a 4-jet flyover! Wow!

Whitney was musical performer perfection, the likes of which we will never see again. I love that she didn't change the anthem at all in an attempt to make it about herself. It was because of THIS right here that so many other people have tried to do what she did and NO ONE could ever do it like her. Why she's the GOAT. She still is the only artist to hit the Billboard Hot 100 Chart not once BUT twice with this. It first peaked at #20 just weeks after she performed this and then after the 9/11 attacks, they re-released it and it did EVEN BETTER, reaching the top ten, peaking at #6!!! She had it all. in an outdoor venue like a stadium the singer generally hear themselves (and or the music) out of time. There is usually a delay. I can't even believe she could do this. Amazing

Whitney was a classy woman, a woman of God. She always kept it simple, because true mind-blowing talent is like that. It is simple. There’s no flash, there are no fillers, it’s just talent. She sang for her country first and foremost. Chills! Proud to be 🇺🇸❤️

I think everyone who watches this performance smiles except maybe fergi. It's such a piece of magic. Even when she goes slightly flat she just smiles and nails the rest of it. Absolute specimen of natural talent and star quality

WOW!!! Nick, bud, you have taken me back. I remember that day I was an 18-year-old black guy madly in love with a 6,1 blonde-haired, blue-eyed Canadian boy; we both got into UFT. He was a year ahead of me and invited me to Tampa, Florida. He loved football and played in high school. I pretend I love the game. After she sang The Star Spangled, he told me I'll marry you one day. She was not even trying this, for she was a God-given talent. She was playful and enjoying herself. Oh! We got married in 2005

It's like they called her up last minute and she just threw on a tracksuit, flawed everybody in that giant stadium, jumped off the stage and went back home in time to watch Dynasty. I don't think Whitney truly knew how her singing touched people.

Not a live performance, Whitney recorded the track a week or so before, then sang along to the recording
