As a 5'8 guy (under 180cm) without kids, perfect replacement for my ICE Ford Fiesta. And another f-you to Ford for not making essentially this car, which they so easily could have.
What is this trend for car reviewers being giants and complaining they don't fit in the back seats?? I honestly think it's one of the reasons cars are getting so big. I am 2m tall, and could count on the fingers of one hand how often in the last year I've been in the back seats in a car - almost always short trips. If I'm travelling with other people, the tall person is in the front seat and everyone is more comfortable - the back seats should be designed for smaller people (maybe 80 or 60 percentile), then the car can be smaller, more efficient, better for everyone.
My kids aren't old enough to drive yet but are already taller than me, so they would be cramped in the back of this. Electric cars should be Packaged better. I love thenew R5 but can't help feeling it would have more room if it were a little less.. retro
Yeah, it couldn't be the need for big battery to get the range, or the safety features that make vehicles heavy, or the bigger brakes to slow all that weight down that increase the size of the rims, or the family needing better access to the baby in the baby seat (seats which also get larger by the year). Nah, the thing that car companies listen to, it's big presents complaining about the rear legroom. 😋
Thanks, Roland, for an informative review. However, my first new car was a 5-door Renault 5 in 1989, and I think you would have found getting in the back of that a challenge! It was a small car (which is why I bought it) and was never intended for gentlemen of your stature! Also, my R5 did not have any extra space under the bonnet (it also opened hinged at the back) so the similarities with new car are more. I currently have a Renault Clio, and the electric R5 is very close to that in many ways, which I appreciate. My next car is looking like it will be an electric R5, but hopefully cheaper and with a smaller battery. My first car (a Ford Cortina Estate Mk 1) had a 'massive' range of 240 miles! Not many people remember driving with a range of under 250 miles. My Clio can do about 450 miles per tank. But to enable me go electric, and have the huge cost saving, it is not a problem. I can't refill my petrol tank at home whilst sleeping. Odd that! Weight comparison: My 2008 Clio (1.6 litre, 5-door) is nearly 1,200kg, so only 300kg less than the EV. ICE cars have become a lot heavier, which some people choose to ignore when comparing with EVs. Cars 50 years ago were a lot lighter, but a lot less comfortable, less equipped, and less safe too.
Thank you soooo much for pointing out how tall you are and converting it to imperial on screen. It really puts your comments and the video into context for those of us who also struggle with rear seat space. For me this is a sign of a quality presenter - most seem embarrased by or not interested in their height, neither being relevant to the viewer. Lovely video.
It's just easier really to switch to metric. It's also more helpful to know engine power in kW because we're used to talking about battery capacity in kWh. And I'm saying this as a 56 year old Brit!
Plenty of EVs have done far higher mileages than that, they'll generally go a lot further than ICE. In terms of years, no, but that's because modern EVs haven't been on sale for 18 years!

Loved this car at Everything Electric and Renault did a cracking job with their stand. Nice to chat to the staff there and even got a little model of the new one to take home for the kids. Also, this is a brilliant video. Love the new presenter, Roland, and the editing between the two versions is tight and consistent. Respect for the outfit continuity too!
My first car was the Renault R5, I loved it! It was a 1976 model I picked up used in 1978. Sadly Renaults are no longer for sale in Canada. Now I drive a Smart Fortwo. :)
Good review ….as others have mentioned, the battery chemistry should always be included. On a reduced range city car, knowing whether to charge to 100 or 80% every day is important.
Don't charge your car *daily* to 100%, that's not good for the battery. Only if you're driving the full range on a daily basis. Which for most people isn't the case, as a 50km/35mi is the daily average driving distance. Only LPF batteries need to be charged to 100% once a while (every other week) to remind them of their total capacity. Batteries are the happiest closest to 50%. According to your daily needs, charge and run closest to that percentage (70-30 or 80-20, for example). Btw. The 40kWh is an LFP pack. The 52kWh is an NMC pack. Both chemistry's have their advantages.
To add to David's response, check out @EngineeringExplained video from a month or so ago, "How to ruin your electric car's battery - LFP Edition". Leaving aside the algorithm-optimized title, it goes over the latest research on LFP longevity, and concludes that the lithium mantra of "cycle shallow, round the middle" is still relevant. It is more tolerant to sitting at 100% than other chemistries (due to lower voltage), but it's still not the healthiest there. But unlike other chemistries, they need the periodic top-off to recalibrate state-of-charge estimation, and manufacturers don't want to bother explaining that, and will trade the longer cycle life for simpler documentation (plus, it has been a myth even in the industry that "LFP don't care")

My own nostalgia is with the Renault 19, which was our first family car when I was a kid. I'd love to see the look on my fathers face when I'd come visit him in a new, elecrical version of the Renault 19. Needs to go 600km though.
Back in the late 70s when I still lived in England I had a Renault 5, the 950cc model with the gear- lever protruding through the dashboard. I loved that little car. It was practical. It held the road as well as a limpet sticks to a rock and only got rid of it when the English weather finally killed it by rusting it the both inside and out. 😭 I now live in Australia so I don’t suppose I’ll see a new EV version of the R5 but I hope this little car is a success.
I had a mk II Renault 5 back in the 90s. It was a 1986, 956cc three door. It didn't like starting on cold mornings, the parts were three times the price of those of a fiesta. On the plus side, it was nippy, easy to drive, had plenty of visibility and a decent size boot.
yes the front seems to be a bit shorter than the old R5. but that is a good thing because there is more space in the rest of the car for passengers. that is the packaging advantage of an EV.
Any news when it will be in the UK? This will blow away the competition. It attracts so much interest because of its its looks ,and the thought gone into its whole package. Bravo!

Your English is so clear that I didn't need any subtitles and understood 100% of what you said (I'm spanish). The car looks amazing, I am deciding between this R5 or a Tesla Model 3, which is more expensive but has a way better range. I still have to save money until I can afford it, so I have time to make the right decision...
If this was eauivilantly priced in the US, this would sell like CRAZY. A compact competitor to the Leaf? A european replacement for the Bolt? Gorgeous.

My mother had one, and liked it a lot. just had a rattle that we could never get rid of. Though the one year dad went to do the annual service, and asked when last she filled the tank, because it was low. She replied he filled the tank last, a year before. It drove 6km a week......
10:40 there are already energy suppliers that are offering, or will offer V2G specific tariffs: for example for France there is the Renault offshoot Mobilize, and for Germany there is eyond by The Mobility House

Awesome! I am currently in the market for one. I have driven a Peugeot e208 GT (in yellow) for the past few years as a company car, and loved it. Very fun, practical and good-looking car. The only thing I was not entirely thrilled about was the range and fast charging capabilities. I could never get more than 250 km's from it on motorways, and knowing that the Tesla or Kia next to you at the charger is charging at 2.5x the speed has always bothered me a bit on long journeys. I can now pick a new company car for next year, and I would love to have this one, but I fear I want a step up in terms of range and DC charge speed, and I don't think the Renault 5 will be a step up from the Peugeot. Many of my colleagues drive Kia eNiro's, Volvo EX30's and Megane E-techs, and all are easily going past 300 km's, and have better DC charging capabilities. I am leaning towards the EX30, however, I'm afraid it won't be as much fun as this Renault 5... What to do... P.S., great to see a Dutch presenter at this channel :)
Great review and loved the Roland Test..I reckon it beats the Jack test! This was a wonderful review of the Renault 5 and loved that you compared to an an original. My wife had a Renault 5 in the 1990's and loved it. She is 5'1" so a perfect size for her. However can we please stop referring to smaller cars as City cars. Yes to the ones that can't reach 50-60 MPH, but all these new smaller cars are full cars and capable of long journies and travelling at the speed of the road. City car indicates it is very limited and should only use it for short trips.
I've been excited by this since the concept and then seeing it at Everything Electric just confirmed I would love one! It has a cool but cute look and its actually small and not trying to look like an SUV! Also pretty decent price in the current market.
My wife bought the same-coloured rust bucket Renault 5 back in the day. We loved it & continually patched it up. It was the runaround for shopping & taking the kids on football trips. I ❤️ you & Jack in these types of cars, equally broad but not as tall as you, 14 cm shy, but what's a few inches these days? It more than helps for comparison purposes. It's a great nostalgic review.

I didnt realise this was a FCS video. I like this guy and i love this car. I drive a Megane e-Tech and apart from the complete BS (-30% on a good day) on range and complete BS on the public charge system that it is a great form of transport. Compared to the bus, which is where you are going.
My first car was an R4, followed by a Super5, Clio1, Scénic1, Espace3 and over the past 10+ years a Grand Espace4. My kids have left the nest, so I guess my next car may be a new 5. Full circle. 😂
I’d love to have seen you park the old and new next each other and compare the width. Being able to get out of the car at the supermarket is just as important as being able to get into the back seat.
The car looks fantastic. Saw it in a dealership. Iconic model with the Harman Kardon speakers and mobile charger (yes, it's an option!) you get a price roughly at 39K EUR. 35K with the French eco bonus. One has to wait for the seriously stripped down versions to get a reasonably valued car.
Welcome back Roland, you've been missed hugely!! I would love to see you on the channel ALOT more and even replace another host who's voice I cannot stand like fingernails on a chalkboard. Hope they bring you with the team to Sydney or Melbourne next year for one or the other Electrify Everything(FCL) events. Being a big guy myself really love your reviews shows me what cars are best suited for those of on the vertically enhanced department. :)
My second car was a 1980 R-5. If this one despite its slightly longer body still has the long travel rear suspension of its predecessor that may help to explain how tight it was for you. That large shock tower in the rear is in the way of locating the rear seat further back, but allows the car to bomb through the potholes of Paris like few other small cars. In the city where I live in California we have drainage dips across several streets in place of underground storm sewers that ordinary cars must slow for, as if they are speed bumps. My Renault would take them at speed, causing panic with several of my front seat passengers when we were approaching them. I imagine that without that engine bulge the older R-5 had on the front passenger side due to the transmission being ahead of the engine French style, this car should have better foot room on that side.
I love this new R5 though I fear I may not be able to own one as, at 6'5", I'm only fractionally shorter than that giant reviewer (who is a great addition to the team BTW). I don't see anything wrong with retro design, you simply have to have the right design and pick out the parts that are still relevant today, particularly the core style. The R5, Fiat 500, Mini, MX5, ID Buzz for examples, all took their inspiration (the original Elan in the case of the MX5) from cars that could still be enjoyed and used today. Less successful retros fail because although the original was popular in its day, it is no longer relevant in todays world. I think you can guess what I'm referring too.

Great review by a good new presenter. However one item caught my ear. Did you say there was a heat pump included with this model? As that was missing from the other reviews I have looked at and was a major plus for the Inster over this. And the latters tardis like interior lol.
If we're talking 1980's cars, I am in team Renault 4, not 5. I loved it's quirkiness -- especially the gear stick that came out of the dashboard. When my daughter was born in the 80's her mum had one, and so did the midwife; and seeing the midwife's red R4 parked under a cherry tree covered in cherry blossom is just one of the happy memories from the day my was born, but definitely deepened my loyalty to team R4. But that doesn't mean i can't appreciate this eV on its own merits as a 21st C car
42-52kk AUD. If its anywhere near that price/range here it'll sell very well. Saying that the price war here is awesome, a brand new MG4 405km range version here in Australia is $30,699AUD or 19k Euro drive away!
The cheapest MG4 version is priced above 30,000 euros in almost every EU country(in my market it is €30,5k ~ AUD 49,5k). To get below that you need to have access to various subsidies, but these are also available for other vehicles like the one in the video.
Very nice looking in this colour, much more successful design than R4. Would have liked it to be RWD instead. Nice to see somethings have improved in the last 50 years.
Love the review, Love the looks of the car. However £25k starting price for the cheapest and over £30k for this model is expensive. MG4 can be picked up for under £20k and the top of the range 77kWh MG4 Trophy, which goes a fair bit further, is faster and more spacious, for just over £25k so it's going to need to come down in price fast to be a serious competitor in the small family hatchback segment.
the R5 has full bidirectional charging ability at 11KW back to grid/house..... but it too expensive and it will suffer the same fate as the Fiat 500e... Dave Takes it on gives a better view of the EU legacy mess...
I was excited when hearing about the new R5 and how it was going to be cheaper or at least reasonably affordable as my Zoe was not cheap! However, it looks like it’ll be around the same price as the Zoe like for like with the obvious advantage of having more modern tech but the Zoe could have been had for close to £10k discounts near the end of its run. The Alpine a290 would be interesting except that it’ll be at least £10k more than this current top spec R5😢
@@choshun8 it's a nice looking small car but the price would put me off. I'd expect it to be close to £20k in the not too distant future otherwise they won't sell many. Lots of cheaper competition and some fantastic secondhand bargains out there.

But unlike other chemistries, they need the periodic top-off to recalibrate state-of-charge estimation, and manufacturers don't want to bother explaining that, and will trade the longer cycle life for simpler documentation (plus, it has been a myth even in the industry that "LFP don't care")
Only charge 100% when you'll leave soon after and use some of it. Just don't leave your car @100% for days and weeks, and your battery will be fine.

My own nostalgia is with the Renault 19, which was our first family car when I was a kid. I'd love to see the look on my fathers face when I'd come visit him in a new, elecrical version of the Renault 19. Needs to go 600km though.
Back in the late 70s when I still lived in England I had a Renault 5, the 950cc model with the gear- lever protruding through the dashboard.
I loved that little car. It was practical. It held the road as well as a limpet sticks to a rock and only got rid of it when the English weather finally killed it by rusting it the both inside and out. 😭
I now live in Australia so I don’t suppose I’ll see a new EV version of the R5 but I hope this little car is a success.
I had a mk II Renault 5 back in the 90s. It was a 1986, 956cc three door. It didn't like starting on cold mornings, the parts were three times the price of those of a fiesta.
On the plus side, it was nippy, easy to drive, had plenty of visibility and a decent size boot.

yes the front seems to be a bit shorter than the old R5. but that is a good thing because there is more space in the rest of the car for passengers.

My mother had one, and liked it a lot. just had a rattle that we could never get rid of. Though the one year dad went to do the annual service, and asked when last she filled the tank, because it was low. She replied he filled the tank last, a year before. It drove 6km a week......

Awesome! I am currently in the market for one. I have driven a Peugeot e208 GT (in yellow) for the past few years as a company car, and loved it. Very fun, practical and good-looking car. The only thing I was not entirely thrilled about was the range and fast charging capabilities. I could never get more than 250 km's from it on motorways, and knowing that the Tesla or Kia next to you at the charger is charging at 2.5x the speed has always bothered me a bit on long journeys. I can now pick a new company car for next year, and I would love to have this one, but I fear I want a step up in terms of range and DC charge speed, and I don't think the Renault 5 will be a step up from the Peugeot. Many of my colleagues drive Kia eNiro's, Volvo EX30's and Megane E-techs, and all are easily going past 300 km's, and have better DC charging capabilities. I am leaning towards the EX30, however, I'm afraid it won't be as much fun as this Renault 5... What to do... P.S., great to see a Dutch presenter at this channel :)
Great review and loved the Roland Test..I reckon it beats the Jack test! This was a wonderful review of the Renault 5 and loved that you compared to an an original. My wife had a Renault 5 in the 1990's and loved it. She is 5'1" so a perfect size for her.
However can we please stop referring to smaller cars as City cars. Yes to the ones that can't reach 50-60 MPH, but all these new smaller cars are full cars and capable of long journies and travelling at the speed of the road. City car indicates it is very limited and should only use it for short trips.

I've been excited by this since the concept and then seeing it at Everything Electric just confirmed I would love one! It has a cool but cute look and its actually small and not trying to look like an SUV! Also pretty decent price in the current market.

My wife bought the same-coloured rust bucket Renault 5 back in the day. We loved it & continually patched it up. It was the runaround for shopping & taking the kids on football trips. I ❤️ you & Jack in these types of cars, equally broad but not as tall as you, 14 cm shy, but what's a few inches these days? It more than helps for comparison purposes. It's a great nostalgic review.

I didnt realise this was a FCS video. I like this guy and i love this car. I drive a Megane e-Tech and apart from the complete BS (-30% on a good day) on range and complete BS on the public charge system that it is a great form of transport. Compared to the bus, which is where you are going.
My first car was an R4, followed by a Super5, Clio1, Scénic1, Espace3 and over the past 10+ years a Grand Espace4. My kids have left the nest, so I guess my next car may be a new 5. Full circle. 😂

The car looks fantastic. Saw it in a dealership. Iconic model with the Harman Kardon speakers and mobile charger (yes, it's an option!) you get a price roughly at 39K EUR. 35K with the French eco bonus. One has to wait for the seriously stripped down versions to get a reasonably valued car.

My second car was a 1980 R-5. If this one despite its slightly longer body still has the long travel rear suspension of its predecessor that may help to explain how tight it was for you. That large shock tower in the rear is in the way of locating the rear seat further back, but allows the car to bomb through the potholes of Paris like few other small cars. In the city where I live in California we have drainage dips across several streets in place of underground storm sewers that ordinary cars must slow for, as if they are speed bumps. My Renault would take them at speed, causing panic with several of my front seat passengers when we were approaching them.
I imagine that without that engine bulge the older R-5 had on the front passenger side due to the transmission being ahead of the engine French style, this car should have better foot room on that side.
I love this new R5 though I fear I may not be able to own one as, at 6'5", I'm only fractionally shorter than that giant reviewer (who is a great addition to the team BTW). I don't see anything wrong with retro design, you simply have to have the right design and pick out the parts that are still relevant today, particularly the core style. The R5, Fiat 500, Mini, MX5, ID Buzz for examples, all took their inspiration (the original Elan in the case of the MX5) from cars that could still be enjoyed and used today. Less successful retros fail because although the original was popular in its day, it is no longer relevant in todays world. I think you can guess what I'm referring too.

Great review by a good new presenter. However one item caught my ear. Did you say there was a heat pump included with this model? As that was missing from the other reviews I have looked at and was a major plus for the Inster over this. And the latters tardis like interior lol.
As far as my info goes, a heat pump is indeed fitted as standard. At least with the 150 hp version which is for sale in Europe now.
If we're talking 1980's cars, I am in team Renault 4, not 5. I loved it's quirkiness -- especially the gear stick that came out of the dashboard.
When my daughter was born in the 80's her mum had one, and so did the midwife; and seeing the midwife's red R4 parked under a cherry tree covered in cherry blossom is just one of the happy memories from the day my was born, but definitely deepened my loyalty to team R4.
But that doesn't mean i can't appreciate this eV on its own merits as a 21st C car

42-52kk AUD. If its anywhere near that price/range here it'll sell very well. Saying that the price war here is awesome, a brand new MG4 405km range version here in Australia is $30,699AUD or 19k Euro drive away!
The cheapest MG4 version is priced above 30,000 euros in almost every EU country(in my market it is €30,5k ~ AUD 49,5k). To get below that you need to have access to various subsidies, but these are also available for other vehicles like the one in the video.
It's still way too expensive for most people. One can buy a new small economical ICE car for under 20k.
Roland in the back seat reminded me of that scene when dad comes home from the office in the Pixar movie The Incredibles.

Love the review, Love the looks of the car. However £25k starting price for the cheapest and over £30k for this model is expensive. MG4 can be picked up for under £20k and the top of the range 77kWh MG4 Trophy, which goes a fair bit further, is faster and more spacious, for just over £25k so it's going to need to come down in price fast to be a serious competitor in the small family hatchback segment.
the R5 has full bidirectional charging ability at 11KW back to grid/house..... but it too expensive and it will suffer the same fate as the Fiat 500e... Dave Takes it on gives a better view of the EU legacy mess...
I was looking at MG's until I found they are at the very bottom of the reliability charts, the lowest of all EVs; no surprise of their lower prices.
I was excited when hearing about the new R5 and how it was going to be cheaper or at least reasonably affordable as my Zoe was not cheap! However, it looks like it’ll be around the same price as the Zoe like for like with the obvious advantage of having more modern tech but the Zoe could have been had for close to £10k discounts near the end of its run. The Alpine a290 would be interesting except that it’ll be at least £10k more than this current top spec R5😢
Hopefully price comes down with the competition from China. I like the 5 because of the V2G but the chargers are going to be expensive ~£6k
@@choshun8 it's a nice looking small car but the price would put me off. I'd expect it to be close to £20k in the not too distant future otherwise they won't sell many. Lots of cheaper competition and some fantastic secondhand bargains out there.

Je kan er zoveel bagage in kwijt door de dunne vouwbare bankjes en het ongelofelijk zuinige interieur. Da’s iets wat ik toch altijd een beetje mis bij nieuwe auto’s. Maar deze nieuwe R5 is niettemin een plaatje!
Ik snap wat je bedoelt, de packaging is nog al eens een ondergeschoven kindje. Dat laat de Hyundai Inster wel zien: zo slim in elkaar gezet.
