I agree. The roof peeling is worrying. Also be nice to know what's happening with V2G. Not seen a review that actually gives us anything meaningful here. I mean, there are already electrical supply companies that offer these plans, and now, finally, after what seems like a life time, the cars that support this technology seem to finally be trickling through to the public, BUT! And it's a HUGE one, absolutely jack sh!t about the actual bidirectional charger that'll make it all "hang together" and if it'll come with the car, or be an expensive extra that needs to be bought and paid for separately 🤔
It's funny how youtubers try to find angles with polemical titles (and thumbnails) so as not to give the impression that this is going to be yet another laudatory, dithyrambic video for this little Renault 5. Well done, Renault, well done :D
The Renault 5 when it was launched wasn't a Hot Hatch. Why would you think this version would be any different??? The Alpine A290 is the Hot Hatch version. This is just a daily driver .......
If the Alpine doesn't have RWD it will be an absolute disappointment. All Renault EV struggle with traction when pushed. I tried the Megane and Scenic.... Went for other brands that have RWD EV.
@chrisbaker4849 Cheap these days, compared to anything with similar performance. Allowing for inflation, it's probably a little less than the BMW i3S sold for, I think. It seems good value compared to the new electric Mini, unless BMW come out with something very special for the JCW.
@alexa.6316 I'll agree to disagree on that one, especially when there are lots of very good FWD Renault hot hatches. In fact, the ones with questionable handling tended to be the mid-engined RWD road cars(!). Porsche rivalling sportscars, no. But accessible B-road blasters whuch are fun in another way, most definitely. Just watch not to lose the tail with LOOS on the older ones.

Before watching this I watched the "What Car?" review, and they commented on how quiet their car was at motorway speeds, with very little wind noise, and they also saw efficiency of around 4mi/kWh. It will be interesting to see how these cars do when they're being bought in numbers, as it looks as though there are some inconsistencies with build quality at the moment.
Hi Ginny, this takes me back! My first car was a 1974 Renault 12TS in bright yellow with a black roof. Not a bad car for the time, but oh, the rust! 🤣🤣🤣 My Mum had a Renault 6, followed by a Renault 5. Life was simple back then, manual choke, umbrella handbrake, dash mounted gear lever (just like the 2CV).
The stalk thing on new Renaults is no issue. Want gear, approach from top. Want wiper approach from bottom side. I drive a Mégane it’s easy. The audio stalk is haptic perfection and I wouldn’t have any other kind it’s been here since 1989.
I disagree. The audio stalk is one too much. It might have been needed in the days where steering wheels had no buttons and gear selector was in the center console (as on my old Clio) + but now it's just cluttered. I had a rental AustralE for two weeks. The 3 stalks drove me crazy.
I was very worried that my two adult sons wouldn't fit in the back, and now I know they won't...but luckily I hear public transport is very good nowadays
Bit of a disappointing review from Ginny. I drive a Megane and it has some quirks but is a really good car. The drive selector is easy to get used to even if French logic means R and D are not where you expect. The cable storage is exactly the same as on the Megane and frankly yes it could be a nuisance if you had to get to the cable with a boot full of stuff..but here’s the thing. I rarely carry the cable as away from I pretty much always use CCS rapid chargers so don’t need my cable. On the rare occasion I know I might (e.g a hotel 7kwh charger) I just find some space in the boot. Oh and yes the underfloor storage bit is actually the same issue in many EVs. As to the rest..iam sure driving is a matter of taste and other journalist seem to like it and I may or may not if and when I have a test drive. Final bit. Wind noise. If you hit the raise window button it goes away.

Hard, wipe-clean plastics lower down where they can pick up scuffs from shoes, bags, and things are better. A 2014 Mazda 3 I once owned had soft touch plastics on the entire door card, and on the first attempt to clean the car, my microfibre cloth scored it very low down. The cloth tore a track along the surface. I notice that neither my 2016 MX-5 nor my 2021 Mazda 3 have this problem. Soft touch isn't always appropriate.
Honest review. Good to hear. I don't understand why ground up EV's do not have 1 pedal driving or frunks. Simply no excuse not to have these at this stage of EV development. (BMW's i3 had both from 2012/13). And real world efficiency for this is a concern (as it is for the Megane). Will wait to see what owners see after buying them. But an excellent price it must be said from a manufacturer that is not Chinese.

I have been watching a lot of english and german reviews of the new 5, because I am considering buying one, and yours was one of the more informative, less softball ones. Love the design and how this has mostly come through to the production stage looking as great as it did prior (shame about the baguette holder 😟) Surprise the wind noise is so high but otherwise love the car and can see this selling very well
I'm glad there's no frunk. I never liked the idea to open a huge bonnet and then have a tiny little frunk staring at you. A bit ridiculous. The R5 seems really a great product in the segment.
@@SnowDrift-bh7wb A frunk is handy for storing the things you don’t use often like the charger, tyre pump, first aid kit etc. No need to unload the boot to get to them. Otherwise just wasted space!
Was something wrong with your car? This is the fourth video on the R5 I've watched, the other three commented on how quiet it was, even on higher speeds. Two even said the wind noise was very low...
Smaller ones will make this car look like have chicken legs😅because this car have highground body and propotion,if smaller car with lower ground design its ok with smaller wheels
Lots of wonky stalks around the steering wheel was par for the course for French cars back in the day (in fact they were rather infamous for them), so this must be another retro throwback methinks... :) I remember the grey color Renault my school mate's family used to have, and the sloppy steering wheel-mounted gear selector it featured. His mum would fight with it as she carted us kids around in that car somewhere. Dang, those were the days... ;)
The 3 stalks are a pain. After suffering for two weeks on a rental car - I decided I will never ever buy a Renault as long as they have these. A pity really, the Android automotive is nice.... But you get that on Volvos and Polestars, so sorry Renault
Ginny great review , Renault 5 looks just amazing, has sporty looks like proper hothach, but sad to hear that it is not that. Hopefully Alpine A290 bring us first proper EV hothach, my I20N Performance competition 😊❤❤❤ Keep it up with great work 🤟🤟👍
Don’t know who did the editing for this video but the music bits were a bit too loud and you couldn’t really hear what Ginny was saying! Love the car though.
Compared to the Citroen eC3, it is a bit obvious how they have pared back to achieve the price. Like the original Renault 5 it has poor rear legroom where the Citroen definitely scores. On the boot like the Megane it isn't very long but deep instead. Probably the eC3 has more useful space although the volume is less on paper. As usual Renault errs on the very optimistic as regards range. However it does have external style and Renault have learned not to penny pinch on the heat pump which is only an optional extra on the Citroen. The only car (without a frunk) where you dont have to empty the boot to get at the cable is the Skoda Elroq which has the brilliant solution of storing it under the parcel shelf. Why has nobody thought of that before?
All the negatives you mention have nothing to do with the price and equipment and used materials are still better than on the e-C3. Also the e-C3 is longer and has a smaller boot, obviously it therefore has a bit more rear leg room. But cars of this size always will either have good rear leg room or a well sized boot and not both. The boot of the e-C3 might be easier to use, but in the end if you have something big it still might fit in the R5 but not the e-C3 as the missing space might be the deciding factor. Renault is not more optimistic with range than others. In perfect conditions you can get the WLTP range with all the Renaults, whereas some cars from other manufacturers aren't able to, and only very few are able to go over the WLTP range. The Megane is very efficient and R5 is efficient too according to other reviews. The Scenic is also very efficient in most scenarios. Only on the motorway it's not the most efficient bc they made one of the best looking cars with a distinct design and not only focused on aerodynamic in the design, but it's also not a super thirty car. There other SUVs which are way more inefficient
What is the consumption readout showing you? You cannot use the Guessometer (GOM) to judge the range or efficiency. All cars tune those to be conservative (except infamously Tesla) to ensure you won't get caught out running out of juice. Others on the same junket showed 4.6 miles/kWh meaning it is very high efficiency. I guess we'll wait for some careful consumption testing. Renault was supposed to be moving to the Electronically Excited motors along with partner Nissan. Is that the case for this car?
I kind of agree that if the wind noise is an isdue given the development resources available its an own goal, quirkiness is fine some things just take time to get used to and appreciate. Personally a bit disappointed at the price point I'm sure there are plenty will think it's a bargain and it might be compared to top spec 208s but the public are looking at approaching price parity with small petrol hatch backs though the likes of Ford shooting themselves in the foot dropping their cars might help. 10 years of development required before we say these are petrol equivalents though if China is allowed to export their largesse of production things might change though some European automakers might cease to be in the face of aggressive dominating pricing.
I love my clio but it is plagued by wind noise on both the front doors , speaking to other owners and it seems to be common . Must be a Renault thing if the 5 suffers as well
Do the youtube testers actually drive the car actively using the various recuperation settings suitable for each driving environment (city, country, highway)? I doubt it
The car is huge no? It's 1,50m tall, same as a modern S-Class. Reminds me of the Ioniq 5, looked like a nice hatchback on pictures, but in the flesh it's a bit of a monster.
It's tall because it's built on top of a massive battery pack, if it wasn't you'd have 0 head room. It's smaller in length than the clio and by modern standard, it's small.
@@grandtourerpt It's not bullshit at all. It's 6cm shorter than the Zoe and head room in that isn't great (I have one, my 6 foot 2 friend struggles). The entire car is bult on top of the battery, if they make it shorter you have no head room. It's 4cm taller than the mini, it's not big at all. The Tesla Model 3 for instance is slightly shorter in height (6cm to be precise) because the batteries are under the passengers seat, not under the whole car.
I'm a little disappointed that you can't have the fun colors on the base spec car, colours that no doubt you have to pay a premium for after paying a hefty premium for stuff that should be standard fit in modern cars like heated seats. MG did the same with the MG4, in which I went for the Trophy in orange and has proven to be the most deeply frustrating car I have ever owned. I hate to be nostalgic about car specs but I really miss the days when you could order a basic car with only the bits you wanted. On the plus side the bit about being able to save the safety features you want on and off is a brilliant idea especially with daft additions like speed limiters being enforced on new cars. I am going to have a look at the R5 as it will if it works for me be the car that stops me reverting to petrol.
One pedal driving: so many reviewers think it’s important but car designers think otherwise. Personally I think one pedal driving is massively overrated, and we shouldn’t be messing with the classic use of the brake pedal.
I also thought one pedal driving was over rated -- until I drove an EV that has one. Been 8 months now that I drive an EV daily , always in one pedal drive... For me all EV should have it, at least as option (if not as default setting)
@@lucaal77 You need to let your foot off the accelerator gradually, then it slows down gradually. If you just take your foot off it will slow quickly and stop. If it made you sick then you are doing it wrong. Brilliant in slow moving traffic and on winding roads, just like changing down in a manual.
What would be good to see is a group test of all the new small electric cars compared to the BMW i3 which many consider to be the best of the original crop of small city cars. Obviously the range in the i3 will be a limiting factor but, that aside are the new car significantly better than the original benchmark small electric small car.
Great video - 2 out of the 3 bug issues you mentioned, made my decision not to choose this as my next car. Shame as I really like the look of the R5 - back in the day this was my very first car……
There is no way that this car can be described as "compact", have you ever driven the original? That was compact and just what is needed for local driving. This is the size of a house by comparison. Good review as always, Ginny.
Why didn't they make the wheelbase longer? 🤔 The boot is a decent size, but the rear legroom is not that great by all accounts,👎😤😖 only suitable for children & small adults, when it could've been better for carrying full sized adults in the rear. They certainly missed a trick there! 👎🤔😤

If I had to say who’s doing that it’s Kia/Hyundai at the moment.
Strange as another review said was really refined? Do you think was pre production and they will sort out?
I'm holding out for the New Renault 9, a true design marvel in it's day, of which I was lucky enough to own as my first car.
But does the nordic version have the battery pre-conditioning like Megane does?
how does this car look so big and so small at the same time
As a Megane driver, you do get used to the stalks - pretty quickly :)
Love the design and how this has mostly come through to the production stage looking as great as it did prior (shame about the baguette holder 😟)
Surprise the wind noise is so high but otherwise love the car and can see this selling very well
Already got an ex30, this would make a great second car for us.
What ?? The frunk is essential for storing your dirty piss stained charging cable and not putting it in the boot were the groceries goes
If you don't like a frunk, then just don't use it?
@@ocoet3575 Ikr, what the heck are they on about.
How long did you test it for @electrifying? You should reset the trip and drive at least 70km for it to recalculate. Snapshots are not useful.
Was something wrong with your car? This is the fourth video on the R5 I've watched, the other three commented on how quiet it was, even on higher speeds. Two even said the wind noise was very low...
The wind noise is surprising. That does put me off slightly. I’ll have to test this myself before I buy.
I think it's a problem with this car or the windows weren't up properly. No one else has mentioned it.
I'd have music on so no issue
Door not well locked perhaps ? One must check if it's one sided.
@@AlanTovpeople have said the wind noise is minimal. I had to watch about ten in Dutch, French and German before our U.K. lot got a review out.
Others didn't have that problem so it seems like it was either a problem with that specific car or the windows weren't fully up
I didn't realise those were 18" tyres. Had hoped there was smaller ones, but thought the smaller ones would be 14"/15"
Smaller ones will make this car look like have chicken legs😅because this car have highground body and propotion,if smaller car with lower ground design its ok with smaller wheels
@@hanisrosli5484 smaller wheels (and commensurate larger tyres) are more efficient, more comfortable and more resistant to kerb damage.
Great report Ginny balanced and informative…thank you😁👍🏻
I wish I could have a car that has Inster's practicality and Renault5's design........
Love the Renault 5, looking forward to a test drive next year, got megane e-tech at the moment, the storks on one side work well.🙂
* stalks
@@stephenholland5930 you spotted the mistake 👏
Ginny great review , Renault 5 looks just amazing, has sporty looks like proper hothach, but sad to hear that it is not that.
Hopefully Alpine A290 bring us first proper EV hothach, my I20N Performance competition 😊❤❤❤
Keep it up with great work 🤟🤟👍
Great review with lots of important details
it has not LFP but NMC battery.
You have a proper French revolution going on, 2 Renault and one Citroën video.
OMG i want ittt bring it to the USA please..
Curious, I watched two other reviews and they didn't say anything about windows noise, in fact they said that highway driving was very silent.
Maybe pre release problem and problem with windows rubbers. Nothing new in new cars..
It's pity that doesn't have a glass roof. Even AMİ has it. It doesn't need to be opened but it's good for sunlight to come in.
Not in the Sth of France or other Med countries where the 5 is popular.
Don’t know who did the editing for this video but the music bits were a bit too loud and you couldn’t really hear what Ginny was saying! Love the car though.
I watched the Renault 5 with Will on what car. Sorry Ginny , Will got 4.9m/kw on range . Somebody’s has got a heavy right foot.
"Winter in England" Laughing from Finland.. ; )
Watched 10 videos about wind noise on highway, it's weird how nobody said anything about it. Maybe a defective thing on your specific car ?
Seen it in real life and sat in it. Way better in real life in and out.
What are the buttons on the top side of the dashboard binnacle?
A good balanced and factual review!
also, do the back doors actually open, or are these countours just for the design?
Exactly. In Renault you need to drive 70kms after reset before it recalculates. Reviewer snapshots are useless.
Interesting handling and positioning of your baguette at the beginning of your video 😮
Great honest review. 👍😎
A critical review. It would be great to see this car go head to head with the new Citroen eC3. Thus far, the Renault 5 is my preferred choice.
Sub £25,000 is what the EV world needs. So all sounds good to me!
There is only three stalks on the right side of the stearing wheel, not Four as you show in the video, one of Them is on the left
It’s not you, it’s the baguette 😂
The baguette took one look at her and ... sagged.😊
I love my clio but it is plagued by wind noise on both the front doors , speaking to other owners and it seems to be common . Must be a Renault thing if the 5 suffers as well
I quite like the Yellow, but there’s too much wind noise, and who would buy a car without a baguette holder? Sacré blue!
Can remember my old 5 turbo, when you turned the engine off it sounded like a coffee machine/percolator, went like a stabbed rat!
Only 2 of the colours are worth having, it's the Yellow and Green.
@@madmandonna1 that's bullshit. Other EVs with much larger batteries are not as tall.
That's just bad design
@@grandtourerpt It's not bullshit at all. It's 6cm shorter than the Zoe and head room in that isn't great (I have one, my 6 foot 2 friend struggles). The entire car is bult on top of the battery, if they make it shorter you have no head room. It's 4cm taller than the mini, it's not big at all.
The Tesla Model 3 for instance is slightly shorter in height (6cm to be precise) because the batteries are under the passengers seat, not under the whole car.
@@madmandonna1 Model 3 battery is under the car between both axles.
You have no idea about what you are saying
So the efficiency is about half that of a Leapmotor T03. I thought it would have been better.
Nice looking small car, would look better in other colours I think and usual questions on French build quality
price wise it is one of the best cars, but the range should do better. No parking is very odd design choice
Why MILES and mi/1kWh? Are UK/US viewers the main target audience only? It's so hard to put that into the numbers 99% of the world uses.
So unfortunate. Global language has become English but they don't speak metrics.
One pedal driving: so many reviewers think it’s important but car designers think otherwise. Personally I think one pedal driving is massively overrated, and we shouldn’t be messing with the classic use of the brake pedal.
Strange post. All EV's use and need regen braking in some form.
I also thought one pedal driving was over rated -- until I drove an EV that has one. Been 8 months now that I drive an EV daily , always in one pedal drive... For me all EV should have it, at least as option (if not as default setting)
I have an EV (previous Zoe) and i disabled the one pedal drive: it makes me sick (with motion sickness)
@@lucaal77 You need to let your foot off the accelerator gradually, then it slows down gradually. If you just take your foot off it will slow quickly and stop. If it made you sick then you are doing it wrong. Brilliant in slow moving traffic and on winding roads, just like changing down in a manual.
@@jeffbaker1173 thank you for the tip! I will try again :)
23000 is a big kicker! I will Keep it on my radar. But it´s time for me to change car now. So what can I get...
I see people moding this to get double that acceleration. Needs the hot hatch mode!
Looks lovely. Am I right in saying that it is no more efficient than the Zoe? Is this old tech in an shiny new outfit?
It has nothing to do with the Zoe.
The Zoe will do 250 miles in summer, also a 52kWh battery, so looks about the same efficiency.
They got to be marketed fast, because if we only see them on videos other company's will win us over.
Does it make a noise while charging like Zoe does?
There is no way that this car can be described as "compact", have you ever driven the original? That was compact and just what is needed for local driving. This is the size of a house by comparison. Good review as always, Ginny.
What was the original like in an accident?
@@jimmyh6601 I was too good a driver, I never had one.
Alpine. 👍
Shame about the dog lights. They should definitely be a optional delete IMHO
interesting on range as seen others say they got more and over 4
The reviewer didn’t provide any efficiency numbers.
@@agaafear Ginny gave some generalised ones though and another gave like 4miles/kwh but I think for this type of car range is less important anyway
@@ianrob4760 when has a reviewer said - i expected to get 800km from a tank of petrol but only achieved 650km?
Why didn't they make the wheelbase longer? 🤔 The boot is a decent size, but the rear legroom is not that great by all accounts,👎😤😖 only suitable for children & small adults, when it could've been better for carrying full sized adults in the rear. They certainly missed a trick there! 👎🤔😤
2:40 LFP? i dont think so, both are NMC... would ne nice if the key specs of an EV could be (double) checked. You dont have to mention the cell type if you not sure instead of saying it wrong...
Absolutely love the design language, but why does it look so ridiculously big? It's like they tried to make an SUV parade as a small car.
The background music makes it difficult to hear what you're saying. Come on. This is a rookie mistake.
